Ozzie Smith was very overrated .... Omar Vizquel was his equal defensively and a clearly better hitter, but never got the ridiculous press that the Wizard of Oz did.

Omar Vizquel isn't black though.

tripping bro, Bo is the greatest athlete of all-time!!!

being a good athlete doesnt make you a good hitter, and hitting .250 for your career doesnt either.

thanks for helping prove the point

if Bo would have play basketball he would have been an All-Star too, he was the shit

thats an absolute fabrication. just because he could run fast doesnt mean he could shoot. at 6'1" he would have to play the point and have a jumper. so you're telling me that a guy who never played high school basketball would have been an NBA all-star? :):)

he had his chance in semi pro basketball and didnt go anywhere

It surprises me that many people think of Cal Ripken as overrated.

He won a World Series
Hit .276
431 HR's
1695 rbi's
won 8 Silver Sluggers
won 2 Gold Gloves (had just 3 errors in a non-GG year.)
2 time MVP
19 time All-Star
Record breaking moment voted as best Baseball Memory by fans

Compare that to Billy Ripken, who hit .247 with 20 HR's and is best known for writing "F*uck Face" on his baseball bat (baseball card).

Cal was slow and hit into many DP's but far from overrated.

Cal Ripken Jr.

The guy made his name for playing in lots of games. The media talks about him like he's babe fucking ruth but look at the numbers at the end of his career.

He actually hurt his team by staying in the lineup to break that record.

Okay...now we're making some sense

Hard to see anyone else even being close. Maybe Jim Rice

Yeah most career strikeouts, most no-hitters and one-hitters by far. Fewest hits allowed per 9 innings all time. Continued to dominate into his forties. Led the league in strikeouts 11 times including at least once in three different decades. averaged 200 innings per year over a 27 year career. Yep, sounds overrated to me. His won-loss record is the only complaint anyone could have about him stat-wise. He was the best pitcher on bad teams most of his career.

Please elaborate on how this is insane, Barman because your response is ridiculous .... Ozzie was a great fielder, but the media made him out to be the Michael Jordan of his position because he was so likeable ... reminds me more of a better version of Larry Bowa

I give Ripken his props.

It is rare to not miss ANY work/school for 13+ years, and be a All-Star/Golden Glove player for several of them.

Very interesting MLB overrated players answers.

In 40+ yrs. as an avid baseball fan I have seen many players come and go. I started this thread about 2 weeks ago to see what everyone would say. About 25 player names came in over so far. Here is my breakdown of the most overrated responses trying to give the top one's first and then no particular order, sorry if I don't give an explanation as to why. 1. Mark Mcgwire 2. Rickey Henderson 3. Greenwell, E. Davis, Al Kaline 6. Canseco 7. Thigpen 8. Bonilla (never that good) 9. Yaz (hate to admit it but). Now to go through the rest of the responses first with the maybe's: Strawberry, Bo Jackson, Ozzie Smith (very interesting), Mendoza (come on), Meulens, a funny one, (never lived up to his potential), Jefferies, never really did anything good but...D. Young (only played 3 yrs.), Sheffield (too many good years)... I don't see how anyone can say Jeter is overrated...Now for the definite No's as in not overrated...But of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion...Ryan, Rice, Koufax (W-L ratio too good), Rose (my opinion about him besides), Ripken, Clemente, Griffey (too bad injuries put him back). Did I miss anyone??

I'd say Rickey Henderson.

Utter Shock Value which we'll let pass following the Ryan/Reggie/Wizard madness higher up in the Thread
