Monday's NHL Stanley Cup Final Game 4 Betting Preview: Penguins at Predators

Pittsburgh Penguins at Nashville Predators (-155, 5.5)

Pens lead series 2-1

Music City has provided quite the festive backdrop throughout the NHL's postseason, with the Nashville Predators giving their enthusiastic fans even more reason to party with an impressive 8-1 home record. Fueled by a resounding victory in the first Stanley Cup Final game played in The Volunteer State, the Predators look to even the series with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday when the teams reconvene for Game 4 at Bridgestone Arena.

"You know what, best atmosphere I've ever played in," defenseman P.K. Subban said after his team made good on his vow for a Game 3 victory with five unanswered goals in a 5-1 triumph on Saturday. "It was pretty spectacular. Anybody who paid the price of admission to watch the game, I'm sure it was money well spent for them." Pittsburgh's Jake Guentzel continues to pay dividends with a league-best 13 goals in the playoffs and four in the series, with the first statistic putting him within one of tying a single-year NHL rookie record (Minnesota's Dino Ciccarelli in 1981) while the latter has him one shy of the rookie mark for the Stanley Cup Final (Boston's Roy Conacher in 1939, Brad Marchand in 2011). Former Hart Trophy winners Evgeni Malkin (NHL-best 26 points) and captain Sidney Crosby (23 points) weren't as fortunate as they were each were held without a shot for the first time in their 143 playoff games together.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, Sportsnet, TVAS

LINE HISTORY: The Predators opened as -145 home favorites and following the impressive performance on the ice (and by their fans) on Saturday night, bettors pushed the moneyline up to -155. The total hit the betting board at 5.5.

GOALIE MATCHUP: Matt Murray (PIT) vs. Pekka Rinne (NAS)

Murray - GP: 8, W/L: 5-2, 1.96 GAA, .930 SAVE %, 1 SO
Rinne - GP: 19, W/L: 13-6, 1.93 GAA, .931 SAVE %, 2 SO

INJURY REPORT:

Penguins - C N. Bonino (Questionable, lower body), RW T. Kuhnhackl (Questionable, lower body), D C. Ruhwedel (Questionable, concussion), D K. Letang (Out for season, neck).

Predators - LW C. Wilson (Questionable, lower body), C R. Johansen (Out For Season, thigh), LW K. Fiala (Out For Season, leg).

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (64-27-8-5, 57-40 O/U): For all of his success, Crosby has failed to score a goal in 12 consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances and has just one tally in his last 19 Final games. The 29-year-old, at least, contributed 15 of 26 faceoff wins in Game 3, while Malkin lost seven of nine in the circle. "I thought they had some looks," coach Mike Sullivan said of the superstar duo's difficult night. "They had some attempts. They didn't hit the net, obviously. Those are important guys for us. We want them to get pucks on the net because they obviously have the ability to score."

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (54-34-9-4, 46-43 O/U): While Subban mouthed the words for a guarantee, fellow defenseman Roman Josi went the extra mile to make sure it paid out as he scored a goal and set up two others in the second period. "Well, I think it's part of our system (which) allows us defensemen to jump up in the play," said Josi, whose six goals lead all blue-liners while his 14 points are second-best at the position (Ottawa's Erik Karlsson, 18) and just above fellow Nashville defensemen Ryan Ellis (12), Subban (11) and Mattias Ekholm (10). "Yeah, (coach Peter Laviolette) wants us to jump up and make something happen in the offensive zone, too."

TRENDS:

* Penguins are 8-3 in their last 11 Stanley Cup Finals games.
* Predators are 1-5 in their last 6 vs. Eastern Conference.
* Over is 8-2 in Penguins last 10 Monday games.
* Over is 3-0-2 in Predators last 5 games following a win.
* Home team is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings.

CONSENSUS: 61 percent of users are siding with the home favorite Predators and 52 percent of the totals wagers are on the Under.

After losing a marathon on national television last night, in Chicago against the Cubs, the St. Louis didn't get to home. Instead they traveled to Cincinnati for the first time this season, and will start another rivalry series.

My free pick for Monday is on the underdog Reds, as they're going to take advantage of the reeling Redbirds, who arrive mired in a three-game slide.

Over their past 11 meetings, starting last September with a 9-1 Reds win, the teams have alternated victories. And with St. Louis hosting the Reds for two series earlier this season, I think Cincinnati is catching the Cardinals at a good time.

I know the Reds have lost five of their past six games after getting hammered by the Atlanta Braves 13-8 in the finale of a three-game series on yesterday, but that just means they'll be even more hungry, and can satisfy their hunger with a win over a division rival.

I'm going to play Cincy in this series opener.

Monday night Bonus Play release is the Phillies and Braves to play Over the total with Pivetta and Colon serving them up.

Philadelphia makes their maiden voyage to Sun Trust Park having played Over the total in 5 of their last 7 games, while Atlanta has played Overs in their last pair of games, and they are 8-3-1 Over the total in their last 12 games overall.

Nick Pivetta's season ERA is over 5, while Bartolo Colon takes a 6.99 ERA for the year into his 12th start of the year.

I expect the hits and the runs to add up tonight.

Phillies-Braves Over the total.

My Bonus Play is on the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Washington Nationals, and I want you to list the scheduled starting pitchers: Hyun-Jin Ryu and Gio Gonzalez.

Great spot for the surging Dodgers, who have won 13 of their last 16 games and return home after splitting a four-game set in St. Louis and winning 2 of 3 in Milwaukee.

Meanwhile, Washington continues a west coast swing that has taken the Nationals through the Bay Area, for three game sets with San Francisco and Oakland. The Nats are 5-1 thus far on this trip, but this will be the toughest stop on the junket.

I like Ryu, who is back in the rotation because of Alex Wood’s injury. He followed a four-inning save by allowing a mere one run in six innings against St. Louis his last time out - his best start of the year - and tonight will step up against the powerful Nationals.

Meanwhile, Gonzalez opens the month after posting a dismal 4.37 ERA in May, and could be in store for a beating against the same team that chased him from the NLDS last October.

I'll take the Dodgers and list both in this one.

4* DODGERS (Ryu over Gonzalez)

Monday night's comp play is the blistering Astros to win another, this time at the expense of the Kansas City Royals.

Houston has won 10 straight games entering play tonight, and starter Mike Fiers is coming into this start off a solid road win at Minnesota. In that one, Fiers worked 6 innings of 2 run ball with 8 strikeouts along the way.

Compare that to counterpart Ian Kennedy who is 0-5 this season and his team is just 2-7 when he starts. Kind of makes you wonder why Houston is not a bigger priced favorite tonight, doesn't it?!?!

Go ahead and lay it with the 'Stros.

Taking Toronto here. Donaldson has found his home run stroke and looks to keep the Toronto Blue Jays' surge going when they open a three-game series at the Oakland Athletics on Monday. Donaldson, who came off the disabled list late last month, has slugged four homers in a span of five games. Happ is 4-0 with a 3.17 ERA in nine career games (seven starts) versus Oakland. The A's have allowed an average of 10.3 runs in their last four losses.

Dave's Monday Bonus Play:

1* on Nationals/Dodgers OVER 8

The Key: This is a very low total for two of the best lineups in baseball and two average-at-best starting pitchers. The Nationals just put up 28 runs in their 3-game series at Oakland and are scoring 5.9 runs per game on the road this season. The Dodgers are scoring 5.5 runs per game at home. Gio Gonzalez got off to a great start this year but has come back down to reality, sporting a 4.67 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in his last 3 starts. Hyun-Jin Ryu has been a mess all year at 2-5 with a 4.29 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 8 starts. The OVER is 10-2-1 in Nationals last 13 vs. a team with a winning record. The OVER is 4-0 in Gonzalez's last 4 road starts. The OVER is 15-5-4 in Dodgers last 24 vs. NL East opponents. The OVER is 6-1-1 in the last 8 meetings. The OVER is 4-0 in Gonzalez's last 4 starts vs. Los Angeles. Take the OVER.

#MLB Free Pick from Mike Lundin
Play: Marlins/Cubs Over
Rating: 5/10*

The Chicago Cubs are just 28-27 overall this season, but the reigning World Champs are a respectable 17-11 home at Wrigley where they've also scored a healthy amount of runs.

They're probably gonna have to score more than a few runs to win tonight's game with Eddie Butler (2-1, 4.42 ERA) on the mound. Butler is 0-2 with a 12.46 ERA in two career games (one start) against the Marlins. He was slapped around for six runs through 4 1/3 frames in a loss at San Diego his last time out.

The Marlins have won three straight and seven of their last eight, but tonight's starter Dan Straily (4-3, 3.56 ERA) has posted a 6.11 ERA in four career games (three starts) against the Cubs. Over is 5-0 in Straily's last five starts overall.

Look for plenty of runs at Wrigley Field tonight.
