I got a netbook this week. Had really no need for one, but there was a good deal on them and I couldn't pass it up.
What I got is an Acer Aspire One with an 8-inch screen, 16GB solid-state drive, 1GB RAM and the 1.6 Atom processor.
It had Windows XP on it when it arrived, but it ran pretty slowly out of the box. I stripped that OS and put in a customized version of TinyXP. That sped things up immensely.
So far it's been a good little something to keep handy for checking e-mail and this forum, but the small screen makes using it get uncomfortable pretty quickly. It's also next to impossible to type with any speed or accuracy on the little keyboard.
I like it, and I can see it coming in handy, but it needed quite a bit of customization before it was really good to use.
If a person wants a second computer to keep by the couch during football games to check other scores, make in-game bets and keep up with the forum, I'd recommend a netbook. If a person wants to do things like use Office, watch video or anything involving a CD, it's better to get a regular laptop.
For the record: Acer has a bad reputation with laptops. Their netbooks, though, are consistently reviewed as one of the best.
