I agree about their defense but I am sorry that was far from a Heisman winning type performance. A great ending and a decent performance but it doesnt excuse being SHUTOUT for 58 minutes.
the talent around Ryan is about 80% of what normal Heisman candidates have.
Heisman winners are allowed an off game or two, and he even won this one, on the road, against the number 8 team in the country
what else can you ask for???
he won the game.
His defense and his special teams (onside kick) won this game for them. I didnt even bet the game and really dont care but lets call it like it is. QB's and coaches get way too much credit and blame on outcomes of games.
I will give hime credit for winning the game but the thread is titled "Matt Ryan just won the Heisman" and that is what I am arguing, off this performance?
Not sure where you are coming from as you say you can have off games *(which I agree with), was this an off game or a Heisman winning performance, I say FAR from that.
I'm saying it was an off game (against a great defense) and he still found a way to win the game. Of course he had some help (VT's offense is terrible) with the onside kick, but he still finished the job. And he made the game winning pass TWICE, the first of course brought back by a holding call which he would have ran around anyway.
He may be the winner by default at this point, hes still the winner.
Heisman trophy winners are the ones that win these type of games.
Heisman trophy winners are typically on winning teams and they have memorable performances.
Stats are usually secondary.
ex: Desmond Howard, Tim Brown, Gino Torretta, Jason White.
Barry Sanders had many memorable moments. There is no Barry Sanders this year.
Detmer barely won over Rocket Ismail who should have been nowhere near that trophy.
Ware won in a year with inferior competition. The runner up that year was a running back from Indiana for godsakes.
Fact is Heisman votes like those highlight moments and winners:
Witness:
Gino Torretta over Marshall Faulk
Charles Woodson over Peyton Manning
Eric Crouch over Rex Grossman
Desmond Howard over Casey Weldon
I could go on and on, but all had far inferior stats but were A) on winning teams and B) had one or more highlight or "holy shit" moments.
And what do you remember of that year? Desmond doing the Heisman pose. That basically ended the race that year.
Howard is a statistical aberration as wide receivers don't usually rate on the Heisman radar. Hence who he beat, Casey Weldon.
