Rookies and stars get under market value contracts in the NFL and the guys that hit FA get overvalued contracts. It's just a market inefficiency based on the way the CBA is setup.

Creates false incentives for a RB that is 1 injury away from being considered damaged goods.

People say "I think Steelers are right"...Why can't they both be right, it's not mutually exclusive. Sometimes interests don't align.

If Bell would have signed in June he was going to make $44 million($10 for signing and 33 for playing the next 3 seasons).

Either way, the Steelers didn't set out to merely tag him. Bell's agent agreed to the contract.

Even if this is the case, if he just was a flat no non-stop since February, they knew he didn't want to take anything close to their deal. They could've cut bait and used the 15m elsewhere or they could've taken their gamble like they've done.

They weren't blindsided or anything. He's been clear on his stance since day 1. You're going to tag me 2x, I'm not going to be happy about it. Holding out is the only means of leverage he has.

100% agree with this. Bell, in his mind, has a value that he believes to be worth. It doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks, he has a reason. The Steelers also have a value, which clearly isn't the same. Usually, in these situations, there is some negotiation, and they either agree on something or they don't. Pretty simple.

The Steelers GM thought they would be able to agree on something, and that Bell's talk around sitting out/retiring was a bluff. It is becoming more clear every day that they probably won't agree, and that it may not be a bluff. If the GM was not confident in being able to reach a long term deal, I would think he would have made the franchise tag non-exclusive. That way, if Bell got a big offer, and the Steelers didn't want to match it, they could have been compensated with draft picks. Now, not only will they not get compensated, they may not have him for some/most of this season, unless they trade him.

The Steelers beat reporter reported that Bell's agent agreed to the deal. So why would they think he's been a flat no?

What leverage does he have? He's going to possibly lose over $8 million dollars. He's never, ever going to recover that money.

i agree with you there. both can be right. interesting to see because i get the feeling that most teams really dont want to pay top dollar for a running back. im sure some will and he is a great player so i assume he will have suitors. if im a gm i would look for rbs in the draft and use them up on the rookie deal and then let them go at the end. id only franchise them if we have a legit shot at a super bowl that year.

There are no new stories about this in today's Post Gazette. There was a long feature posted about Bell yesterday, but it appears it is on to Cleveland at this point.

he has til saturday at 4pm to sign and be paid for sundays game, even though he wouldnt play. sounds like that may be a smart decision but who knows. every week out will cost him $852,941. this may have been the plan all along. if he doesnt sign by sat then it gets really interesting.

Whether his agent agreed to it and they thought he was gonna to re-sign for 48 hours or not, the result would've been the same at that point. They were tagging him the second time and seeing it through the whole way. It didn't impact their decision at all.

You decide on tagging guys in March, this was in June.

And of course he has no leverage, but why play an extra game where you're going to get 25 touches slamming into 330 pound guys? He's likely going to report tomorrow but you underestimate his risk of ruin. If he gets hurt this year, then he hits free agency as an aging RB coming off an injury. And after the workload he has had since 2013, getting hurt is very possible.

I think he signs and only miss one game....never heard of anyone turning down over 800 grand a week....

As a long term Steelers fan, fuck Bell. Dump that fool and his little tentative, shake n bake wannabe, look for holes, hit or miss run style.
