Fair Warning:

I'll use my plays as an example. I have the following:

#4 Noble Causeway
#11 High Fly
#12 Afleet Alex
#16 Bellamy Road

In an exacta, you must get the exact order of the first two finishers. In a trifecta, you must get the exact order of the first three finishers. An example of an exacta would be #4 Noble Causeway and #11 High Fly. An exacta box would have both ways, another words #11 High Fly and Noble Causeway. If the two horses finish first and second in either order, the ticket is a winner. When you use 4 horses, like I have, you have twelve combinations, #4 with #11, #12, & #16, then #11 with #4, #12, & #16, then #12 with #4, #11 & #16 and finally #16 with #4, #11 and #12. A $1 exacta box combination using 4 horses costs $12.

An example of the trifecta would be #4 Noble Causeway, #11 High Fly, and #12 Afleet Alex. Using the 4 horses, like I have, you have twenty four combinations. I won't list them all here but it is similiar to the exacta box described above. A $1 trifecta box combination using 4 horses costs $24.

As for the percentage needed to win at horse racing, it varies widely and depends on the payoffs that the player receives. Not an easy endeavor to be sure, but there are those that are successful.

Don't like the prop. There are a number of contenders in this race that could win this race. Would rather hook these up in an exacta or trifecta then bet this prop.

I have a two questions.

1) Why does NBC keep showing these stupid stories about the horse owners?

2) Why do people bet so much on the Kentucky Derby? It is just another horse race among the thousands that happen every year.

Similiar to the Superbowl, it's all about the event. Absolutely agree that it is but one race and one bet, but it comes once a year and when you hit the Derby, particularly with a decent price, it does feel different then other wins.

i know absolutely nothing about horse betting...

If I place 100 on Noble Causeway to show, and 100 on Sun King to show.. is this a dumb bet?

and by show that means they have to finish 1st , 2nd, or 3rd for me to cash.. right?

any idea what a ballpark figure of the payout would be on these wagers?

BG, I bet the Derby because there are large field and a lot of square money in the pools. Also it is my favorite day of the year.

Newport:

Betting principles in horse racing are much different then betting principles in Sports. Odds are in the exotics in horse racing. Parlays in sports can be more difficult and don't nearly have the payout that horse racing does.

AND NOW I HAVE TO TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE VERY VERY WRONG

BECUASE OF TRUE ODDS PAYOUTS AND THE MONEY LINE BEING ABLE TO BE PARLAYED.......YOU ARE BETTER IN SPORTS THAN IN HORSES

This just proves that a many gamblers that are strong horse gambers will justify horse betting over food on the table (not you ted) but it is such a PARADOX and a HYPOCRASY that horse gamblers do not look at the long shot of an exacta........but are scared out of their mind of a sports parlay

Would not call this a dumb bet. First, in order for you to cash, either your horses must finish either first, second, or third. If both finish in the top three, all the better for you. Noble Causeway is currently 11-1 to win and Sun King is currently 15-1 win. Since you bet to show or to finish third, I can only give you and educated guess and perhaps the Judge or someone else may want to chime in with their thoughts as a possible payout. I would say that you might get 3-1 to show on Noble Causeway and maybe 7-2 to show on Sun King. It all depends on which horses finish first, second, and third.

Newport:

Let's not argue. If I had more time I could show you the differences in payoffs. The key is that you are playing into the totalizator pool created by your fellow bettors and often are the beneficiary of bad money. I am a sports handicapper first and foremost, but have been betting horses since 1972, so I am familiar with both. I wish you all the best today and in the future.

You're welcome. Questions seemed to have slowed down now and hopefully this thread has helped anyone interested in the Derby today. Time for me to relax and have my lunch and watch the Derby. Good luck everyone.
