Just got a HDTV and have a question...

Just got the new 3lcd E series sony 61" Sony HDTV and the games on HDTV are fabulous. The problem is that the non hdtv games are horendous. ESPN gameplan gamea re flat out horrible, the mlb package is pretty bad too. I used to have a Sony 53" digitial and the non hdtv games don't come anywhere close to that quality. Are there any ajdustments to my TV that I can make to get the non hdtv games in any better? Thanks.

The only I could suggest outside of you settings on your TV (make sure display format is at 1080i or better and etc. if available) is to look at using a better cable although it won't that much of a difference (even using the expensive cables). Enjoy the HD though, it's like looking at someone right in front of you.

Yea someone told me to get monster cable. I am just using the cable Direct tv brought ith them to install it. Man I hope it makes a difference. I don't want to be stuck just watching games on hdtv and nothing else.

I've had HD for over a year and have had this problem explained to me. As I understand it, there's an incompatibility with the HD sets (and boxes) and the technology of the nonHD channels. It's an analog/digital thing. In my area they are making advances to convert the nonHD channels to the digital technology. There's been significant improvements on some stations. Eventually everything will come in fine. However, I'm not sure when that will be.

One of the problems of owning a HDTV is that they let you see just how bad some signals can be.. Some sets are better than others for SD (standard def) programming, but in general, I think they all look horrible.

That has to be a setting on the TV, and probably varies by brand. Have you gone through the troubleshooting section of the manual yet?

If you just purchased your HDTV and you want the most bang for your buck, look at someone in your area who is certified in tuning it...You'll notice the biggest difference you've ever seen


There is a technical term for these people who do the tuning, but the name escapes me..Ask your local high end home theatre store.....They will know what you mean right off the bat

I have a Samsung 50 inch DLP HDTV and I have a problem with my HD channels. It's like I'm zoomed in a little. All four edges, top, bottom, left, and right are offscreen so I think I'm only seeing about 80% of the screen. Any ideas on this? It would be greatly appreciated.

I heard the same thing and also all the Monster cable do is make about a 3% difference and improves the audio slightly

I'm no expert but it could be two things: If you TV has a pic size button, you may have the setting on "theater wide" this will cause you screen to enlarge like a movie screen, my TV does this whenever I use an input button outside of my HD setting. See if you can change it to "Natural" or "Fullscreen". You can also check you menu options and my TV has a feature where I can calibrate the screen position. If you have this you may want to see if that helps.

check to make sure you do not have it on zoom as opposed to stardard. zoom does take quite a bit of pickture away and cause the scores at bottom to appear larger and not able to view completely.

Mr Teaser, Do not buy Monster cable. It will not improve your picture. Monster cable is mainly used for insulation of the wires to avoid interference from outside sources.

These TV's thrive on a 1080 HD feed. Non HD or Non digital will suffer greatly in picture quality. I paid 400 to have mine calibrated and it did help the anolog channels a bit, but they will never look good on a digital TV. Calibration will greatly improve the HD channels. I have the Samsung 50" DLP RP.

Good information. $400 huh? Wow. I might pay that but that's a pretty steep price. You consider it money well spent?

I do have a zoom setting on my TV, but it's not showing. By the way, if I shrink the screen down to 4:3, the edges are still cut off so I wonder if it's a problem with my signal from Cox Cable possibly.

My guess is you need the DVI cable (same cable for digital connection on a PC video card). I had the cable guy come to my house 3 times with 3 cable boxes before they figured out the the DVI port is not "activated" on the boxes they use. Im not getting HD until my cable co uses the right ports..or i switch to satellite.
