Winky- Why did Tony Bruno leave "The Extravaganza?" I used to listen to it off and on, and all of the sudden, he was no longer on it. I never heard why.

there was a mention of this in the L.A. Times a few weeks ago.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

they wanted tony to come back - but for LESS money. he told them "no" so they parted ways.

they then brought on Van Earl "Wrong" and turned it from "must listen" radio to "must avoid" radio. that show is AWFUL. i listened to it for about 1 hour the first few days to give it a chance - then had to turn it to ANYTHING else.

too bad andrew siciliano is locked into fox sports radio for another 28 months meaning he can't leave and join tony until around august - 2007! my guess is andrew would leave ASAP if he could and join tony ASAP - the 2 got along GREAT and had GREAT chemistry together.

i met tony one time because we have some mutual friends. one of the nicest, funniest and smartest guys out there!

recall the show "I, Max"? (doubt you would admit it - if you did). that show was originally supposed to be a vehicle for tony to do that half hour but FOX execs didn't think he could hold the show - so they gave it to max and paid Max $850k/YEAR and STILL owe him 2 more years - even though Max (and holley and wolff) aren't doing the show anymore - they still have to pay all 3 until the end of 2006!

all these names bring back memories - even though i am only 29 :103631605

as for rome - please keep in mind in order to succeed in the business - you basically need to be a motherf****r! nice guys (for the most part) end up eaten up and spit out. having worked in bristol for the worldwide leader in sports in can you most of upper management are guys i would NEVER turn my back on - not for 1 second. they are the kind of guys who'd push you in front of the bus w/o a second's hesitation.

as for some names mentioned:

Dave Smith - simply put - a dog with fleas. has an "audience" of about 10 people yet think's he is god's gift to mankind. 1540 has NO ONE lisntening to it - and i can't even get the signal - which sucks because i wanna listen to tony bruno - simply put - one of the smartest and best sports talk show hosts EVER!

john fricke - for some reason - can't hold a job. i am told he now works for the espn station in denver. back in december - one saturday i am reffing some NJB games at El Toro HS (roxy and company know where this is). i am on the baseline when suddenly fricke walks right by me. i was stunned - wondering what the hell he was doing there - even though i know he lived in nearby san clemente (he's said that on-air many times). he went over to the next court and watched that game. no clue if it was his nephew or a family friend or... i have always liked fricke - and fricke is like al michaels and brent mushmouth in that he KNOWS what the line is for the games!

Stu Nahan - known him since my days at KTLA. the stories i could tell about him and the stories i heard him tell me. most of them can't be printed here. i was at ktla on friday's and stu would show up about 8P for the 10P show. he got there and about 5-10 minutes after getting there - he would offer to buy us all frozen yogurt or ice cream - since his wife wouldn't allow him to eat it at home (to try and lose weight). one day he comes in and says he had to cancel a meeting the next week with our producer because he was having lunch that same day with johnny carson and fred decordova (exec producer of the tonight show) - and said it like it was nothing. best known for the rocky movies. best story i can tell here about stu: 1992 i am playing a hardball game at dodger stadium with the group i belong to (the BEST part of this group - by far - was playing this hardball game ON THE FIELD at dodger stadium - something most people would KILL for!). i lead off the 2nd inning and bloop a hit over the first baseman and into RF. the SECOND i hit it i am thinking "2" - as in a double. stu is coaching 1st base. so i round 1st and slide into safely slide into 2nd and the ball gets away so i hustle over the 3rd. i score 2 batters later and get high fives in the dugout. the inning ends and i go back out to the field. i come back at the end of the inning and i am told stu wants to see me. i am thinking to congratulate me for my hit and baserunning. instead - stu is PISSED! he tells me "didn't you see me try and stop you at 1st on that hit?" (for those who have never met stu - he is about 6-feet in both directions - so he is not very easy to miss). i honestly tell him i didn't - but then i tell him, "stu - even if i did see you i was running anyway because i had it in my mind i was going for 2 all the way." stu does NOT want to hear this answer and benches me for the next few innings until the catcher starts dying of heat and i go into play catcher despite the fact i have never done so before and wasn't wearing a cup. i end up making the play of the game - when i see the runner heading from 2nd to 3rd and no one is there and i hustle over there in my catcher's gear and make the putout to save the game. funny how stu liked me then!

Jim Healy - DOMINATED L.A. radio like NO ONE ever has - or will! simply put - in L.A. - 5:30P was JIM HEALY TIME! if you were in a meeting - that meeting was over by 5:25 or you left so you could be near a radio at 5:30P to hear Healy. he always had fun with "the dreaded 6 o'clock tone". when he died they did a special sho on Healy recapping all of his great moments. I have that show on CD and listen to it a lot (Roxy - if you wanna copy - e-mail me and we can talk).

All I can say for Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton is - the next story he doesn't make up - will be the first. Heck - even his name is made up. His real name is

Paul Mahan

his brother Larry Mahan is involved in the rodeo circuit
omg winky the nahan story is the best! thats a really good one thanks for telling it. i knew fricke really well. we swapped email all the time and as you know,or maybe you didnt, before i got my pinnacle account i crossed the border every weekend to bet at caliente. now i know those who heard fricke and jeff dotseth now on espn800 in sd, those 2 guys frequent caliente too.and id run into fricke at pueblo amigo a mile south of the border. no one ever realized it was him. he had so much experience in the sports world it was unreal. while at cnn i believe he created the AP poll for football.he was under used at 1090. and i let john lynch know that a few times. i heard he was in denver now and you just confirmed that winky. do you know exactly where? id like to contact him. he called me the sports babe and that always made me laugh cuz he knew my name but never called me anything else.lol.believe it or not i was so interested in sport talk that i went thru a broadcasting class in the hopes of getting into the business. i interned at 690and kept my eyes and ears open. but i fell into sports medicine and became a sports injury therapist which is a killer job that pays much better than radio ever could. the connections ive made the last 15 years serves me greatly where sports betting is concerned. when im in vegas if i have questions for any of the playas around town info flows freely since i dont appear to be any kind of threat and i think they view me as some ditzy blonde.lol.ken white sung like he was a contestant for american idol and he gave me his full attention last october at the stardust handicapping show when his old man pete white was competing against caesar robaina. pete white was so bad it was obvious he was only there to mislead.but ken gave up alot and it made my year the most profitable ever. anyway winky this rome thread has given him alot of pub but i doubt he would like much of it. he wouldnt be surprised by it either tho. i dont know who dave smith is. i remember mr healy.he was really a legend. and the sports gods did a sex mixed with sports talk show??unless they were calling katerina witt and tonya harding and having phonesex on the air i cant see how a show like that could survive 10 m inutes.lol.

if you were at 690 then odds are you mighta worked with jon chelesnik. i still e-mail him all the time - i mis him on espn radio

another great stu nahan story

during the 1990 hardball game at dodger stadium i speak with stu about that night's didgers/astros game. stu used to have tix in the press box level - 4 rows of padded seats and because of the level - there was NEVER a line at the concession stand. i could leave my seat after the last picth of the inning and be back in my seat by the first pitch of the next half inning. anyway - stu says i can have his seats for that night's game - but i gotta go to his house and get them. he gives me the addy - but tells me he won't be home - but he will leave them under the mat. ok - no problem.

well - on the way there - my car's thermostat gives out in the 90+ degree day and my car overheats. i have to pull over about 3 blocks from stu's place. so i let the car cool down and get a plastic milk container and walk over to stu's place. i figure stu's not there - so i can see about getting some water to put in my car and see how it goes.

so i get to stu's place - and sure enough - the tickets are there. and luckily - there is a water attachment in front of his house. so i turn on the water and fill up my container - figuring he's not home - no biggie. that is until stu and his wife open the door to their house and stu asks me what the hell am i doing. i tell stu what i was doing as well as ask what is he doing there - i though he wasn't gonna be home. the look on our faces was priceless.

No doubt Fricke likes "the action," and as I "local" I can confirm this. That is as far as I can elaborate on that part, but it makes for a nice touch here. I can also add that he is a "credible" customer. Didn't stay with me for too long, and didn't get buried in the least.

He was part of the first team at CNN with Nick Charles and Fred Hickman when cable-style sports was in its infancy.

He showed up at my sports bar one day and I recognized him immediately. Soon after, he ends up on the AM air. He's a big Husker honk, too.
