The Jacksonville Jaguars have informed starting quarterback David Garrard that they are releasing him with less than a week before the opening game of the season, a source told ESPN.com's John Clayton.
Luke McCown will start Sunday's opener against the Tennessee Titans.
Garrard's release was first reported by FoxSports.com.
This isn't the first time that coach Jack Del Rio has released his starting quarterback before an opener. In 2007, Del Rio named Garrard the starter over incumbent Byron Leftwich. Leftwich was then released on Sept. 1, 2007.
Rookie Blaine Gabbert, drafted 10th overall in April's draft, was to begin the season as the third-string quarterback but now will be McCown's backup.
