Is it appropriate for an elementary school to discuss incidents that involve violence with your kids?

Yes I would be ok with it.
I would be more then ok with it.
I would encourage it.

The education value would be the kid gets to learn that life is not always great. There are some bad people out there.

The sooner they learn this the better.

We'll just agree to disagree. An elementary school classroom is not the place to talk about murder. It adds no educational value whatsoever. But don't get me wrong, I'm not angry about it at all. I just want to know what happened.

I never tell a parent how to raise there kids.
You can raise them any way you want.

I just believe in honesty.

It is absolutely the most important thing a parent can do with there child.

Lying gets you nowhere.

It is the #1 thing that breaks that all important open line of communication.

Communication gets lost when trust is lost.
Trust is lost when you lie.

When you lose communication you lose your child.

End of story as far as im concerned.

Nobody is talking about lying to anyone here Chop. If he brings it up to me, no problem. Bringing it out in the open in a classroom full of kids is unsatisfactory.

I'm the parent. It's my job to speak with him about this stuff with honesty. Nobody else.

Well, if asked directly by the student, I'd take issue with the teacher lying as well.

It sounds to me like you want to have your cake and eat to.

How so?

I said if a student asks the teacher a question about the incident well then she should answer honestly. To herd a few elementary classrooms into one classroom and then educators initiate a conversation about an event in our country that involves death and destruction is ludicrous. No educational value whatsoever. It's not their job and furthermore, the school could actually be sued. There are school district policies against doing stuff like this Chop.

But at the same time you also say that only you and your wife should be the one's to discuss such a heavy subject as death.

In the context of initiating a conversation about it yes. I said back on page 1 that a teacher has an obligation to answer any questions if asked though. Are you missing that point?

Did your child attend school in Louisiana Chop?

She is 4 and I already told her about things such as this.
I told her Santa was not real.
I told her the Easter Bunny is not real.

And if I get asked about Boston I will gladly tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

That way when she is 16 and has real issue's she will know who to come to when she needs to have an honest conversation.

The way your child treats you when they are 16 starts with the way you treat them when they are 4.

All these parents that talk about there kids turning into monsters when they turn 12 or 13 is not true.

It was a slow process that started when they were 2, 3, 4, 5, etc..

Kids are soooooooo much smarter then adults give them credit for.
They are not dumb.
They are nut stupid.
And they dont forget.

The way you treat them when they are 4 goes a long way in determining how they are going to treat you when they are 16.

Do you have a teenager Chop? Because I do and think I have a pretty good idea of how to raise my own kids.

We all raise our kids differently. I think by telling a kid there's no Santa Clause at 4 years of age you're robbing her of her childhood. Kids need to believe in something and to just be kids. They need to wake up on Christmas morning with excitement. They need to dream and dream big.

We just disagree man. I don't think some things are for kids. It's not appropriate.

Just curious. If asked where babies come from do you tell your 4-year-old how and where babies are made in detail?

No I dont have a teenager.
My kid not believing in Santa does not equate to my child not having anything to live for.
She still gets to look forward to presents under the tree on Christmas morning.
I dont think it matters much to her where they come from.

I think its a great learning experience for a child.
Its the first imprint that child gets in her life that tells her that she has a parent that refuses to lie to her.
Something as simple as that will be very important in the future when much more important issues in life come up.

I never said you do not know how to be a good parent.
Like I said earlier, I never tell a parent how to raise there kids.
I have not done that one time in this thread.

I was asked how I raise mine and gave my answer.
That is a very different thing then point blank telling someone else how to raise theres.

Do you have the impression from somewhere in this thread that I do this?

My two little ones ask me each December if Santa has their name on his list. They want to watch NORAD tracks Santa to see where he's at. They help bake cookies for his reindeer. The go to bed early so he can deliver presents.

I did the same and loved it. It's all in fun man. It's all about tradition. Has nothing to do with lying to anyone. They're just kids and look forward to it all year.

In this case I would certainly not tell her they came from a stork.
I will probably say something to the effect that this is complicated and I will explain it in detail when you get older.

I will never make something up.

That you can be assured.
