The problem too me isnt so much the 6-6 teams, its that these conf are guarenteed to send so many as long as they have enough wins, Their were quite a few big ten teams at the end fighting to get enough wins to get to the bowls the big ten were guarenteed and I still dont think they had enough

The seniors should just say they are not going and pay their own damned tuition and room and board for next semester. Always cracks me up (I know its not really being said in this thread) when people say college ahletes should be paid. They are. Try paying for 4-5 years at a university without that scholarship.

This always cracks me up even more. Do you know what the hourly wage equates to? That doesn't even factor in the revenue they bring the schools.

Iowa winning BOWL record.

OHIO STATE and MICHIGAN........both losing bowl records.
ROFL...um, one of these programs is not like the others.

Personally, I pegged IOWA going 9-3, and going 8-4 at the very worst.

IOWA could win the ALAMO BOWL by 30+ points and it will still not be considered a "successful season".

But lets not forget, IOWA had nary a winning season in the 60's and 70's, so going to a bowl is something to always be grateful for if your a HAWKEYE FAN and winning any bowl game sure beats sitting home for the holidays such as teams like the ........MICHIGAN STATE SPARTENS, IOWA STATE CYCLONES, FIGHTING ILLINI, SYRACUSE ORANGEMEN, NORTH CAROLINA TARHEELS, NC STATE WOLFPACK, ETC., ETC.

Exactly...Iowa should be compared to programs like NCSU and Syracuse.

It isn't like all of the 85 scholarship players are packing the fans in and driving ratings. The 3rd string guard who rarely will see field in 4 years is still getting free ride. The few players that drive the ratings and bring in the fans can leave after 3 years and get rich. Nobody's making them play ball. Get a real job if its too hard.

Really? So the starters would be just as good without the other guys to go up against during the thousands of hours of practice for their less than 40 hours of actual game time during the season?

A "free ride"? Have you ever gone through off season training with a Division 1 football program? A lot of time the guys that are down on the 2nd/3rd string have it a lot harder than star athletes. Have you ever been a scout team player where you are live all week? Starters get hit on Saturday's...scout team players are live 3-5 times a week.

Only the elite athletes that end up in the NFL bring in revenue? That is hilarious. I'm sure Troy Smith is the only reason Ohio State sold out their game against Michigan.

BYU and Utah probably won't sell any jerseys, sweaters, or hats this year because they don't have near the talent levels they had in the past. I am sure the place will be half empty and ticket sales will be way down. :missingte

The universities make billions on these athletes. Why shouldn't they pay them for what they are doing for the university?

If the grind of practice on a major college team is too much than they should quit and pay their way to college or find some other form of work.
No one is forcing them to stay. And yes I played 4 years of major college football on scholarship and enjoyed it immensely although I don't know of any one who is crazy about some parts of practice especially on grueling summer days it goes with the turf. It resulted in only the proverbial cup of coffee in a couple of pro training camps but I still consider it a great experience and use of time and allowed me to garner a good education that I would be hard-pressed to pay for myself at the time.
I also know a lot of guys(who I played with) who didn't even pay any attention to their education and lost out. Who's fault is that?

The guys who don't take advantage of the opportunity of getting their education are idiots. No doubt about that. But what does that have to do with the revenue they are generating for the university while earning less than $2/hour?

There is a reason this country has a minimum wage.

Also, the scholarship athlete can't get a job on the side to get some money coming in. How is this fair?

It isn't fair. But I know some guys who had to work their way through college with summer jobs and part-time jobs during school year and loans and I felt a lot better off than they. Athletes at money-making programs should be able to get a little more money than they are now but the money they make is plowed back into all the sports that cost money which is most of them. Have to fly that women's field hockey team to Kansas or the men's golf team to Fla! After all they sell DOZENS of tickets to their events! Thanks you Title 9.

Well, PRE-season if you were to make a line on EVERY Iowa game, they would have been favored in all but two games..........OHIO STATE and @ MICHIGAN.

Believe their OVER/UNDER total wins was 9.5 UNDER -135 at the beginning of the season.

True, true...

But let me ask you this Fish -- don't you agree that this year's 6-6 performance is reflective of coaching?

It is always funny when a team finally has a down year it is because of coaching...what is it the previous years when they are winning?

It's called talent...

When a coach falls way short of expectations (see 2006 Iowa Hawkeyes), why shouldn't he be criticized?

When a coach meets expectations (see Iowa's 8-4 and 9-3 seasons in previous years), why should we heap him with praise? Doesn't he receive a salary for that? (And a hefty one, at that...)

To answer your question, let's use this year's version of Iowa, a perfect example. It doesn't require "great coaching" to get this team to 9-3. That's simply the status quo for this team (or at least it should be). But, it does require "poor coaching" to get this team to 6-6. So, that's why a down year is attributed to poor coaching.

You buy into the pre season media predictions too much in my opinion. This team was overrated from the beginning. This team was not nearly as talented as years past.

It will be a reality check for Iowa fans if Ferenz ever does move on. I think they have been spoiled with just how much he and his staff have done.
