USA vs. Mexico (under 18)
1pm eastern (Sunday, June 17, 2012)
over 159.5

USA won game one vs. USVI by 105-42. The team plays fast under coach Billy Donovan. Mexico lost to Brazil by 79-69. Mexico does get points from Estrada Stone but I hope he isn't overwhelmed against the Americans. Vasquez can also score for the Mexicans. In the Under 17 tourney last year, Mexico played a 94-90 (184) game as well as a 90-75 (165) game.

It does concern me that if Mexico can score enough to help it go over then they can also cover the +54.5 but I will focus on the total and hope to see a fast paced game.

over 159.5 (bet365)

USA wins 110-59 (169 points) as 22 different players scored.

Canada vs. Argentina (under 18)
4pm eastern (Monday)
under 157.5

Canada is favored by 5.5 points vs. Argentina, who is led by Gabriel Deck. Canada played a 77-51 (128) in their opener and then blasted Colombia by 98-67 (165). Argentina has played games that reached 125 and 141 points.

The winner finishes 3-0 in their bracket and avoids the USA on Tuesday in the semis. I expect a close game with some defense. I won't be shocked to see an over but like our chances to get under 157.5 as the teams are playing their 3rd game in 3 days.

Bwin now has o/u at 149.5 so there was plenty of value at going under the original number.

under 153.5

Only 2 of the 20 games have gone over 153 and both were games involving Luxemborg. They lost the opener to Finland 114-54 (168 points) as the winners made 15/28 3-pointers. They were able to control the boards and scored inside as well. Latvia beat Luxemborg 95-60 (155). Italy has played just once and lost at Latvia 71-52 (123 points). Italy will be at home and are favored by 35.5. I think it is worth trying for an under and hope we see a game in the 90-60 range so that the Italians win comfortably and then get ready to play Greece in their third game. GL!

Brazil vs. Bolivia
4pm eastern (Wednesday)
South American Championship

pick: Bolivia +55.5 (Pinnacle)

Bolivia is the worst team in this tournament and lost their opener by 122-36 to Uruguay. Their second game vs. Paraguay was much closer as they lost by only 19 (81-62). Medrano has scored 12 points in each game for Bolivia and they get points from Arias, Llanos and Zambrano too.

Brazil is 2-0 with close wins against Paraguay (67-63) and Uruguay (77-73). I hope to see Brazil win by a comfortable margin and then move on to the semis and not try to smash their South American counterpart. Brazil could win big and it would not shock me but we start out ahead 55.5-0. Maybe we see a final score in the range of 100-52. GL!

USA vs. Brazil
under 18
8pm Wednesday
over 152.5

These two played a few days ago and it was 83-64 for 147 points. The two combined to miss 16 free throws and only made 9 3-pointers. Brazil was 25-72 from the field. Brazil's other games were games that reached 148, 149 and the 128 point game with Canada yesterday. I was hoping to see USA play Canada today as that game would fly over the total.

However, this game will be played in Brazil and get their fans into the game. The last five times in previous UNDER 18 action the two have played it made it to 159, 156, 168, 157 and 195 points. USA and Argentina played a 107-72 (179 points) yesterday. Brazil gets points from Ramos, Dias Silva, Da Silva, Demetrio and Pereira. It looks like Brazil is headed for the de Silva medal..................let's hope both can score enough to get an over.

Previous three final games were 81-78 (159) and 104-82 (186) and a loss to Argentina that was in the 140's.

6-3 overall in this thread.

Hungary at Israel
Women's Euro BB (Saturday)
Israel -1.5

Both teams are 1-1 in the Eurobasket Qualifier. Israel beat Ukraine at home by 73-58 but lost at Belarus 69-61 by allowing 9/18 3-pointers. This game is at Israel's Rishon Le Zion, which is where they beat the Ukraine. Israel is led by their guards as Doron has scored 16 and 28 points so far while Cohen has added 23 points, Levitsky has 23 and Zairy has 15 in the two games.

Hungary beat a bad Portugal team at home by 80-45 but they lost at Belarus in a low scoring 51-47 game where they had no block shots and were 0-10 from 3-point range.

I am hoping Israel can win at home and cover the small number vs. a decent Hunguary team. It does concern me that the home team doesn't have a strong inside game and they aren't very deep but I think they can get the win and cover.

Venezuela vs. Argentina
9pm eastern Friday
South American Tournament
over 162

These two played earlier and it ended 90-87 (177 points) and there were 15 missed free throws. Argentina has made 5, 16, 10 and 14 3-pointers in their games and led by Laprovittola, Guiterrez, Safar and Van Lacke. They have scored 87, 90, 88 and 88 in their 4 games while Venezuela is led by former Maryland standout Greivous Vazquez. They have reached 86, 87, 101 and 86 points in their games. It could work against an over since they played before and will be familiar with each other but there should be plenty of points. The first game saw both make a high percentage of their shots. Both should reach 80 and get into the 160's for an over.

I think it was a loss, this is what I found:

FINAL
Venezuela - Argentina 56-79
Argentina claimed the South American Championship title. They overcame Venezuela in the Final. Facundo Campazzo (179-PG-91) scored 15 points to lead the winners. Argentina and Venezuela stayed close throughout the opening quarter. The hosts eked out a narrow 18:16 lead at the first intermission. Argentina boosted the gap in the second frame. They accounted for a 38:25 halftime lead. Argentina stretched the margin even more in the third quarter. They piled up a 58:39 lead with one quarter remaining. Venezuela could not recover in the final frame and had to surrender at the end. Marcos Mata (201-F-86) and Leonardo Gutierrez (200-F-78) knocked down 14 points each for the winners. Hector Romero (202-F/C-80, college: New Orleans) answered with 12 points for Venezuela. Jose Juan Bravo had 11 points in the loss.

Sadly, the teams each made their first basket and then struggled to score the rest of the night. Some layups rolled off the rim and a few layups ended up being airballs. I hope to bounce back with a winner.

Pick: China +11 (bet365)

China beat Egypt 80-68 after jumping ahead early in the first quarter. They made 8/17 3-pointers and were led by Zhao with 25 points and Heng with 16. 6'11" Zhou Qi had 16 rebounds. He had 36 points/14 rb's in a warmup game.

Australia did lose to the USA by 22 points on Friday. They did cover the +27. Dante Exum had 17 for the Aussies, who were just 15/28 from the line.

These two both finished 4-4 in the 2010 tournament and their meeting was 68-66. Obviously, the players are different from two years ago but it does show that the two countries are not that far apart on the court.

I hope to see another close game between the two teams and feel +11 is worth a shot.

Portugal at Belarus (women's BB)
12:30pm Wednesday (July 4th)

pick: over 121 (Pinnacle)

Belarus and Portugal played an 82-53 (135 points) game earlier in the competition. Belarus will be at home and their earlier game with Israel ended with 130 points while they did have low scores with more competitive teams like Hungary and Ukraine.

Portugal lost their opener at Ukraine by 92-38 (130) and their game with Israel was 62-60. Portugal did have a very low score in their last home game. Belarus just lost to Hungary and should bounce back at home as a 38.5 point favorite. Let's hope Troina can lead the way to a game with enough points to get the over. My guess is 80-45 (125 points). GL!

Croatia vs. Spain
Under 17 (in Lithuania)
July 4th
pick: Croatia -4.5

Croatia is 4-0 while Spain is 3-1. Croatia beat Argentina by 10 while Spain lost to them by 10. Croatia just played the home team (Lithuania) to a close game but won by 4 points as the losers did make 13/34 3-pointers. There will be motivation in this game to avoid the USA. Croatia is the better team in my opinion.
