he would've played if it was important to him. manu is a fierce competitor though so im assuming the foot was bad enough, and again no point in risking it. not like they actually had a chance or anything.

Did hell freeze over today?

GTC and I are almost in agreement on something???

This is stupid. If he had even a slight tweak he should come out. His job with the Spurs is WAY more important than this game against the USA was, especially since he ALREADY led Argentina to a gold medal four years ago. Once in a lifetime is more than enough to upset the Americans in basketball to win an Olympic gold medal.

Manu is one of the most underrated, under appreciated players in the game. By far one of the most fun guys to watch.

He was very much banged up heading into the Olympics. He already decided to play. If you have a beef it is with Manu. He elected to play even though he has had foot problems and even though the Spurs did not want him too. He is on record as saying how much playing for his country means to him. People from his country have said that he would play regardless all along. No problem, I understood and they were 100% correct. Problem I have is when he decided to stop playing. Down big near the end of the tourney and things were not looking good. Can you say Bullcrap. You gut it out and play.

FYI..I do not think you appeciate or understand how much these games means to them. Go USA.

That's funny. Manu and most of the international players care far more about representing their country in the Olympics than they do playing for their professional team. They truly consider it an honor and a privilege to compete for their homeland.

Did you realize that Manu was so hurt that he literally didn't practice or play in any exhibitions in the months, weeks, and days leading up to the Olympics because he was so seriously injured? But come the opening game of pool play, there he was out on the court for his team, for his country.

And lets also not discount how many times he's played through injuries for the Spurs over the years.

I'm willing to give one of the fiercest competitors in the basketball world the benefit of the doubt here. I'm guessing the injury that forced him to leave the game hurt him far less than not the pain in his heart for not being able to compete for his country today after the first few minutes.

He always played when it counted. Until today after they were IN TROUBLE. I am calling BS but understand there will be disagreement and defending of Manu. Some agree and some do not which makes sense and I can understand. He has always been hurt and played..again until the most important game of them all when they were getting killed. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......................

It just doesn't make any sense to me that he'd quit in the bronze medal game, but in the opening game of pool play against Lithuania (an essentially meaningless game in the grand scheme of things), when Argentina was down around 17 points in the 4th quarter, he continued to play despite being visibly hobbled and in only his first game back from injury.

He also happened to carry Argentina all the way back in that game before ultimately falling on a last-second shot.

So again, it's really hard to believe that he'd quit in this highly important game for his country, yet play the entire 4th quarter of what was a blowout in an essentially meaningless game, a game in which they were in far worse trouble than they were today, early in the 1st quarter.

Yet another reason why I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

We can agree to disagree, though. Fair enough.

SKins, I really cannot disagree with what you said. He definitely deserves the benefit of the doubt. 100% agree. He deserves that. I suspect he could have gutted it out but that is about it.

A little different scenario Pumpkin. Coach B should have stuck around. SHow class and do things right. Agreed. Manu is not clear cut and I am calling BS. He could have played of course but we do not know for sure. I am pretty skeptical myself..some agree and some do not.

FYI..Pats losing bad again tonight. LOL....

you going to copy those posts across the street like you did the ones that backed what you thought?

Of course not. That would be a like a defense attorney using material against his own client. Argentina was scrappy huh?

I know Manu. I have seen him play and am well aware on his foot problems. They play the US who is more than ready and he knows it, the US gets out to a big lead 21-4.....look unbeatable and Manu decides to call it a day. You gut it out. He has done it before. Many have. Nocioni was limping around and played. THe replay did not look that bad at all on that foot. I have not gotten an update and for all I know he could have broken his foot. It might have been unplayable to play on it. That could be the case. I am taking the opinion that him and his team was in trouble and Manu said: "NO MAS"...Wilt Chamblerlain came out of a game 7 and Bill Russell criticized him for it and they never spoke again for years. How do you come out of a game 7? Well they all say this is the most important game of their lives. Well, I like Ginobli an awful lot but he quit today. You take your beating like a man. You limp, you fight, you play with the heart of a lion. Manu played like a pussycat today. You take you beating like a man.

you are an idiot. if this was true, then why wouldn't he come out and play in the second halfd after they got back in the game?

you ever have an ankle injury? you know what it feels like?

just a stupid ass post. this kid is more competitive than anyone on the U S team. AS GOOD OF A COMPETITOR THAN ANY OTHER PLAYER IN THE NBA.

Ginobili needs ankle surgery, out 6-8 weeks

Ginobili
Manu Ginobili said on Friday that his injured left ankle will require surgery. There is no date set for the procedure, but the estimated recovery time is six-to-eight weeks.
"[The ankle] is not worse," Ginobili said. "Now the issue is that it's not better either, and it seems that the only way to recovery fully is to have surgery...I understand that I may miss some games, but participating in the Olympic Games was very important." It is unclear whether Manu will be playing in six-to-eight weeks, or whether that is when his rehabilitation will begin. Michael Finley will start while Ginobili is out, and Roger Mason and Ime Udoka will both pick up extra minutes. More details should be available soon. Aug. 29 - 8:48 am et
