If You Drafted A "Franchise Quarterback" Would You Bring Him Along Slowly Or Start Him Immediately?

In your opinion, which is the best for a rookie QB who is considered the future of a team.........

Bring him along slowly the first year or two, letting him learn from the sidelines, from other Quarterbacks on the roster, and on the practice field, or let him gain first hand experience on the field his rookie season?

Depends how good of an offensive line I had. With a decent enough one I'd let him start but there is no sense in getting him killed before you build the line. Hence why I feel no team should take a first round QB before solidifying their line.

I would bring him along slowly... put him behind a veteran and let him soak everything in... learn the game, the system, let him take a lot of reps at practice, put him in during blowouts, etc.

Ultimatley, I think it also depends on your team... it worked for Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco because theyre around a great team... it didn't work for Alex Smith because the 49ers suck.

Also, I believe that if Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers had switched spots on the draft board, Smith would be successfully leading the Packers right now while Rodgers would be struggling as a 2nd or 3rd string QB

Bingo. Build the OLine first or if you take the early QB, sit him his first year and get him an OLine in year 2 or 3.

Brady Quinn likely starts in Cleveland this year, and should have an excellent OLine with Joe Thomas, Eric Steinbach, Alex Mack and Ryan Tucker.

For every position for every game I would always put in the player that gives the team the best chance to win. If you think there is any question to sit your quarterback because of a weak line, he is not a franchise playe

I would put him in right away, lets face it not many QB's do well when they are ice cold warming up the bench. I Would even like to see coaches put in there 2nd string QB If that team were up by enough, just 2 keep them sharp. Not Many NFL coaches do this enough.

you get your reps in practice monday-thursday... theyll be okay, after all, theyre NFL quarterbacks... koy detmer or peyton manning, theyre NFL quarterbacks

badco, i think its understandable that people get impatient nowadays... back then you werent paying them a ridiculous amount of money... the system is so messed up in my opinion... for anyone that has their own business here, its like paying the 22 year old "hot shot" from harvard more money than your senior workers... its outrageous...

Slowly. Best way to ruin a good QB is to throw him in the fire too early with a crappy offensive line and no idea what he's doing.

See Carr, David. I'm convinced he could have been good, but a few too many knocks to the ground by huge 300+ lb linemen knocked the good sense out of him.

agree with bringing him along slowly. know he is a big investment but if you have ever seen the college game from the sidelines and the pro game from the sidelines there is a world of difference in speed of game and do you want your big time draft pick to be injuried and not play for year or maybe entire career.
just my opinion.

If you have a pretty solid team around him, then yes, I would play him. Stafford, no. Way too many holes on the OL.

By playing against better competition & a tougher environment.

Let him take his lumps, and when the experience & knowledge is finally there, they look back at how tough it was in the beginning & things begin to seem so much easier.....
