Yeah I hear you.
I use to think that I would top out at around $500 for a Laptop... but my current one was $999. Got it I think in Aug. 2010 ... it still works, but have had a few bumps lately and know it's on it's way out. or at least for what I use it for... or maybe I should say... as much as I use it.

I was once told that Laptop use is for people that use it 4-5 hours a day. I have to be putting in 10+ Hours a day... most days
99% of the time it's in Sleep mode. But a New battery about 3 months ago.. guess I could have put it towards a new Machine.

Anyway... of course now I'm looking at a $1800 Laptop ... but it is the Top of the Line. Worth it ?? Probably Not ! LOL But I want it.
I like the fact that it's only 3lbs. and a 1/4 of inch thick. Great for Traveling

But I should just go buy some $900 one and it will probably last me another 4 years

i don't know much about top-end toshiba's and i believe they're only in their 2nd generation. with high-end laptops occupying such a small segment of the rapidly dwindling laptop market, there just isn't much 'buzz' about laptops anymore.. including apple.

if i had a gun to my head and had to choose between the samsung 9+ (NP940X3G) and toshiba touchscreen models you're considering, $100 alone would not be enough to sway me towards the toshiba. the ATIV 9 Series has an excellent reputation, premium design, and solid build quality. so honestly the toshiba would have to come in well below it for me to really consider it. i generally trust toshiba as a brand, but it doesn't excite me in the ultrabook segment. that being said, if you've had great experiences with toshiba in the past, that's important too. what do the owner reviews say about that model?

have you looked into the ASUS Zenbook UX301? when it comes to super high-res touchscreen ultrabooks, that's pretty much the best model next to the Samsung 9+. there's a lot of discussion and owner reviews for each of those on the notebook review forum. Fujitsu makes a top-end ultrabook and is a favorite among the die-hard notebook lovers who are willing to spend around $2K. outside of that, there just isn't much around unless you're willing to consider HP, Dell, or Lenovo.

i'm still waiting for the 2014 ATIV 9 non-touchscreen with Haswell and AC WiFi (NP900X3G). it was supposed to be out here already, but is a bit behind schedule.. new ETA is mid to late april. it's been released in Korea and parts of Europe so far and the few reviews that do exist thus far are very good. that's the only real option for me when it comes to a super-light weight, business-oriented ultrabook. Sony makes the Vaio Pro 13 in a non-touchscreen version and it's super light weight as well, but they just sold the Vaio brand so who knows.

i've ruled out the 2014 Lenovo X1 Carbon because it's way overpriced for what it is and they changed the keyboard too dramatically.

Thanks for the Update

Agree about Toshiba with not knowing about them being a Top end Laptop name.
I think for the everyday user, they make a good solid machine.

probably would Love to wait for a non-touch screen... but I've been nuts about getting this one...

Think I'll stick with Samsung ... because no reviews yet on the Toshiba

oh BTW ... that i5 is down to $1,090.00 over at the Microsoft store....http://www.microsoftstore.com/store...3US-Touchscreen-Ultrabook/productID.283976900

even though you are waiting for the non-touch screen

I just paid $400 for a new laptop the other day. What do you need for $999 that you can't get for under $600?

yeah, you could definitely do a lot worse than a Toshiba. i know their non-ultrabook Satellite series has been a steady performer for years.

not surprised to see the base model 9+ for around $1K now. i'd be really hesitant to get anything with only 4GB of RAM with so many applications these days being memory hogs, but i suppose it depends on one's individual use. they were supposed to be updating the 9+ by late summer, but not sure if that's still the plan. Samsung seems to be concentrating on Chromebooks right now after all the issues with Windows 8 and Intel's requirements about what an 'ultrabook' must be. many manufacturers are also making Windows 7 available on their laptops now, which hopefully will push Microsoft to make substantial improvements with Windows 9. otherwise, the PC industry will become even more uncertain.

i understand that basic argument many people make, but most of the sub $500 laptops these days are essentially disposable devices. build quality is typically poor with all plastic chassis, form factor is bulky and between 4-5 lbs, internal hardware components very budgetary, lower end specs, and very poor TN panels with bad viewing angles and color replication, etc.

while it's definitely a niche market, many people are willing to pay between $1K to $2K for the lightest form factor with excellent build quality and excellent display. it's often a better investment too if you amortize it out, since they'll tend to last much longer if you take care of them. these are the types of people who either use their laptops for most of the day and/or travel with them consistently who are looking for a more enjoyable experience.

BAS, here's an i7/8/256 version on eBay that ends in 1 hour on auction. currently around $1,400. definitely a legit seller with original receipt so there wouldn't be any warranty issues..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-ATIV-Book-9-PLUS-13-3-256-GB-Intel-Core-i7-4th-Gen-1-8-MHz-8-/201053170976?pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item2ecfb3ed20

Yeah saw that... went for just under $1600 with the Shipping.
Probably will just order from Bestbuy ...... This coming week will be it.. screw it !

Thanks for the Info, really appreciate it

that same model is back for $999 again, this time at Best Buy..

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...lack/8486385.p?id=1218877697110&skuId=8486385

they're clearing it out since the new Haswell model will be coming in the next month or so. there will be an i5 Haswell version for $1,399 and an i7 Haswell version for $1,699.

so this older i7 version for $999 is a pretty solid buy if your budget is $1K firm. it only has 4GB RAM however and that's not expandable (soldered on motherboard), whereas the new Haswell versions will come standard with 8GB RAM plus improved battery life and an AC wifi card.

Now they are selling the Haswell i5 for $999 ( Microsoft Store )

Personally, I'd have a hard time substantiating the $750 difference in my mind.

The ATIV Book 9 Haswell version is in stock now at a few small online retailers. CDW has the i5 for $1,399 and the i7 for $1,699. I want to see it in person first at Best Buy or the MS Store before pulling the trigger though.. not sure when they'll be getting some in.

Best Buy doesn't carry In-Store ( not sure why ) But maybe the Microsoft store does.

Like I said, here's the i5 with a Haswell for $999 http://www.microsoftstore.com/store...3US-Touchscreen-Ultrabook/productID.283976900

might just run over there tomorrow or Friday and see this in person

Oh, this is the first i5 Haswell version that came out with only 4GB RAM. They released a second i5 version with 8GB RAM but that's $1,450. There's no way I'd pay an extra $450 just for 4GB more of RAM. At the same time, I personally wouldn't buy a new laptop with only 4GB of RAM since browsers and applications are taking up much more memory these days (and will likely only get worse).

Whereas the $1750 price will get you the i7 with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. So it's really quite the leap up in specs and price if you're determined to get this AB9+ model. Keep in mind these don't have AC WiFi, but you might be able to upgradeable the internal WiFi card yourself if you take off the back and source the right card.

Right, you're talking about the ATIV Book 9 Plus model. I was mentioning the new ATIV Book 9 (not Plus) model - this is the one with the non-touch matte screen catered to "business users". It also comes with Windows 7 Pro and AC WiFi. Lots of different models to confuse people..

Yeah, the non-touch version (2.5 lbs) is simply called the "ATIV Book 9" and the i7 Haswell version is in stock now for $1,699 at CDW:

http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Sa...re-i7-4500U-Windows-7-Pro-Window/3235501.aspx

The i5 version for $1,399 isn't in stock yet but will be soon. Both of these versions come with 8GB RAM, Win 7 Pro option, and AC WiFi. The i7 version also has a 256GB SSD.

Newegg also has these two models, but they're a bit more expensive there for some reason..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...=skim525X832X32742c8ac6e7ff33ca6b000970d97e93

Anyway, I just want to see this model in person first at a place like Best Buy or Microsoft before buying it. But neither of those places have any info yet about it - hopefully at least one of them will carry it though.
