If someone sees this that knows, can you elaborate why the Devils 'ruined the game' ? Thanks

The Devils played a lock system where the left winger was basically a 3rd defensemen trapped and filling up centre ice. The Devils would hold up and milk a 1-0, 2-1 game and just kill the flow of the game. I mean hey they won so i'm trying not to hate but the free flowing game of the 80's is by and far a better type game to watch

DMMD98 is right on. Then because they won and beat a free flowing Wings team in 4 straight in '95 many teams set out to duplicate what won. Florida the next year got to the finals with it and later on more Devils and Buffalo, Dallas and Anaheim.

The Edmonton Oilers, with MVP Wayne Gretzky leading the way, beat the Boston Bruins 6-3 to complete a four-game sweep and win their fourth Stanley Cup in five years.

How could you guys forget the Broadstreet Bullies of the 70s.

Bobby Clark, Bill Barber, Dave Schultz and my favorite athlete ever. #1 Bernie Parent.

I was real young then, but I do remember the games very well. That is where my pop got into a fight for spilling nachos on a lady's fur coat(a past thread)

Flyers ruled!

Montreal Canadiens introduced this style of play in the 70's.

Always a good place to wear a fur coat...to a hockey game.

Gretzky, Kurri, Anderson and Messier up front, Coffey on the point, Fuhr in goal. The Oilers of the mid 80s had to be the greatest team ever. Those squads in the later 80s were no pushover either.

Greatest team ever! Not a chance! although they scored over 400 goals a season, they gave up over 300. Coffey wasn't much of a defencemen in his own end. Fuhr vastly overrated (He wins games 6-5, comes through in the end, thats BS his team just outscored most oppenents) 70's Habs greatest modern team ever. lost 29 games total in three seasons!!!! Would score over 300 goals and give up less than 200!Their goals for doubled their goals against! Had Dryden in goal, big three on D (that played defence) Lafleur, Shutt, Lemaire, Cournoyer, weren't bad in scoring either. Had the best player in the league according to the USSR national team in Bob Gainey. (He was special, had to make a trophy specifically for him to award his dominance) Remember it took both the Oiler and Islander dynasties (along with bourque, robinson, goulet, gartner, wilson, yzerman, and peeters) to barely beat the soviet national team in 1984. The 75 Hab team tied the Russian national team, without the help of other all stars. They outshot the Russian 38 to 13 completely dominating them. This is when the Tretiak legend was born.

Even though it's hard to compare eras and style of play , I would also agree that those Montreal teams in the late 70s , after the broadstreet bullies run ended, were pretty special. Many players went on to coach or GM.

Some of the greatest hockey ever played!! I miss those Oiler-Flames playoffs. Just ran into Semenko today, cool down to earth guy!
The Battle of Alberta was my favorite rivalry. I can't remember what year it was, but it seemed like every game Tim Hunter and Dave Samenko would come to blows. This was back when they'd drop the gloves and square off like men. And the Refs would let them. Now all you see is sucker punches from behind.

What about Steve Smith's bank shot off Grant Fuhr's skate late in game 7??

Or, Theo Fleury sliding across the ice pumping his fist after he scores the game 6 winner in OT. He does it again, at Northlands, after they take a 3-0 1st period lead in game 7. The Oilers, totally enraged, rally to win 4-3 with Esa Tikkanen's goal in OT.

So many memorable games.

Bring back the Smythe Division!!
