The Edmonton Oilers, with MVP Wayne Gretzky leading the way, beat the Boston Bruins 6-3 to complete a four-game sweep and win their fourth Stanley Cup in five years.

Hockey in the 80's was really the glory years of the game. It all went downhill after the Rangers won it in 94 thanks to the lockout and the Devils trapping and killing the game.

Gretzky, Kurri, Anderson and Messier up front, Coffey on the point, Fuhr in goal. The Oilers of the mid 80s had to be the greatest team ever. Those squads in the later 80s were no pushover either.

The 1989 Calgary Flame team was one of the best as well. If it wasn't for the great one those Flames teams would have atleast another ring in that era

The Big Bad Bruins from the Early 70's arguably the best ever

70steam_action.jpg

They came together in pieces, some of which were undeniably large, some that seemed much smaller. Grouped together, they became the most powerful, charismatic and entertaining team in Boston Bruins history, so unforgettable that 35 years later, people can still recite line combinations and recall specific moments as if they'd happened only hours ago. Even younger people who never saw them play know all about Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito and the Big, Bad Bruins.

Bruins definitely up there, late 80s Flames as well. No disrespect to Fish's team, but its sad when we have to compare the Lightning against the great teams of the last 3 decades of hockey. Totally agree though, the Devils ruined hockey.

Even if I hate the Habs....those Montreal teams from the late 50's-60's and the late 70's have to be mentioned.

They could have just put on a playoff season, using the same teams from last year and still gotten decent ratings. The problem is the regular season, its too long and lacks intensity too often.

100% DEAD ON CORRECT

The Stan;ey Cup PLayoffs are THE BEST playoffs of ANY sport out there. the physical toll alone it takes on these players is unreal and there is NOTHING more exciting than OVERTIME playoff hockey - where ONE shot can end the game. the other 3 sports have OT that really isn't sudden death where BOTH teams have a chance to win at any second. the NFl is the closest - but odds are if you are on defense - you aren't going to win the game - only keep from losing it. in hockey - you can be on defense - then 5 seconds later celebrating your victory because you transitioned from defense to offense that fast

and the longer the game goes - the more exciting it is. ever try and turn away from an OT game in the 2nd or 3rd or longer OT - when you have watched for so long and you know ANY SECOND the game could be over

The Stanley Cup Playoffs - RULE!

The NHL Playoffs are as good as it gets, and how sweet was last year's run by Iginla, only to finally bow to the Ning.

A seven game series between the Lanche and Wings isn't exceeded by much in the realm of team sports!

THIS IS WHY I THINK THEY NEED TO MAKE THE GOAL LARGER...SCORING, AMERICANS LOVE SCORING!

THE PURESTS MAY CRINGE, BUT THE GAME NEEDS REGULAR SEASON EXCITEMENT, 12-14 GOAL GAMES WOULD BE MUCH MORE ENTERTAINING FOR TELEVISION.
