HOUSTON - The Houston Texans have signed unrestricted free agent WR Keenan McCardell,:aktion033 it was announced today. The Texans also announced the addition of LB Eduardo Castañeda as an international practice squad player.
McCardell (6-1, 191), a native Houstonian, ranks ninth in NFL history with 861 career receptions. His 11,117 career receiving yards are the 18th-most in league history. A 12th-round pick of the Washington Redskins in 1991, McCardell is entering his 16th NFL season. He looks to play his 200th career game in the season opener against Kansas City.

McCardell has notched five seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards and seven seasons with at least 70 receptions. He won a World Championship as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002. In Super Bowl XXXVII, McCardell caught two passes, both for touchdowns, in Tampa Bay’s 48-21 win over Oakland.

Last year, McCardell helped San Diego compile a league-best 14-2 regular season record. He caught 36 passes for 437 yards and had one rushing attempt for eight yards. The former Waltrip High School star was honored in 2006 by the Touchdown Club of Houston as the Houston-area NFL Player of the Year.

Castañeda (6-2, 243) joins the Texans as an international practice squad player. The 24-year-old Castañeda will be on the Texans practice squad throughout the regular season and will not count against the eight-man practice squad limit, giving the Texans nine practice squad players. He is not eligible to be signed to the active roster this season, nor is he eligible to be signed to the active roster of any other team.

Castañeda played for the Rhein Fire in NFL Europa this spring, recording 10 tackles at linebacker and four special teams stops. The Monterrey, Mexico native played for the Mexican national team in 2005-06. He also competed in the Mexican championship game three years in a row from 2004-2006, while at the Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM).

The Texans also released rookie free agent WR Onrea Jones.

just having that pear-shaped turd, named Mike Sherman, on your sideline is good for an extra 2-3 losses a year

The optimist in me is shooting for 10, maybe 11 wins. I don't think we will do worse than 5 wins (doesn't make it impossible).

The Texans will be a force to be reckoned with this year. If only we were in th eNFC, we'd be talking insta-playoffs...

WOOH GO TEXANS!!!!!!

Kubiak needed a QB who can get the ball out quick, make quick decisions...Schaub is a much better fit than Carr was.

He should be good for a couple more wins. Their offense will be better.

nothing is guaranteed with them, but they could win @ KC (especially if LJ isn't back yet), @ ATL, Mia, Tenn, @ Oak, @ Cle, TB. Anything else would be a fairly signficant upset.

here is an example of how professional Sherman is - don't all GMs sleep at the combine? just look at his pathetic draft record

Would beating Indy at home be a significant upset?

Texans going 10-6 ... crazy?

Somebody stop me before I lose it.
Yes I was the one who said Matt Schaub would be a great fit for the Texans well before anyone knew he was even on the trading block.
Yes I said the Texans were a couple of years and a few more quality defensive players from being the equal of the 2006 Chicago Bears.
Yes I said the Texans would have their best team in 2007.
Yeah I was the one who predicted the Texans would go 9-7 this year and contend for the playoffs.
Am I the only crazy one who now looks at the Texans' schedule and can see them winning 10 games?
The Las Vegas oddsmakers say the Texans have the worst chance of winning the Super Bowl (125/1 at Bally's), AFC Championship and AFC South Division. Almost every preseason magazine has the Texans rated as the NFL's worst team.
So how in the world can I have the team formerly known as the Nipmucs winning double digit games?
Like most people, this is what I do when it comes to predicting team records. I go through the schedule game-by-game and put down a W or an L. That's not good enough though, as you will always be harder on notoriously bad teams and too kind to historically good teams. So I'll group certain games together for added balance, saying, "They'll win three out of those four, or they'll lose at least two of those five." It takes about 45 seconds to do one team's season.
The previous three years, I hit the season record of the New England Patriots on the nose twice and would have been three-for-three had they not intentionally lost the 2005 season finale against Miami.
Typically I just do teams I'm interested in or the ones I'm required to give a record prediction for publication. But I just did my quick breakdown of the entire AFC schedule and came away with the New England (13-3), Baltimore (11-5), Indianapolis (13-3) and San Diego (13-3) winning their divisions.
As for Wild Card teams, I have a four-way tie of teams with 10-6 records. The Jets, the Steelers, the Broncos and ... the Texans.
I'm not predicting the first playoff appearance for the Texans as yet. If the tiebreaker comes down to conference record, I think their 3-1 mark against the NFC will put them at the bottom, but that's too geekish to be concerned about right now. How far off am I?

I'm ready. I think they have a good shot at .500 this year, maybe better. Schaub is a major upgrade over Carr. Special teams look great. We shall see how the offensice and defensive lines do this year.

You know it Max. Defense looked really good today. Mario had 2 sacks and a touchdown. The offense will only improve with time. People are used to the previous teams. This team has nothing in common with the Texans of the past.

You play... to win... the game
