The job market is not what it was 5 years ago.
This.
Most of the younger betters like using the internet. Clerk jobs have gone down in a number of places I've seen. It's hit and miss really. I worked in a place that had 60 clerks NFL Sunday, mostly East Coast. Now I see West Coast guys, and it's 99% internet. And now I'm hearing that a few of the credit shops (the ones that will hire without papers, you won't get hired at Cris, Bodog or BetUs) are testing the waters with programs that move the lines, eliminating line movers. In reality, it's a credit shop so they are just copy pasting the lines from other books anyway. What the hell do they need some lazy ass with a hangover moving the lines late and wrong when a program will get it done faster, more accurate and at a third of the price. I'd say English is your angle, because there is always a need for guys to talk with agents and if your line skills are better than the standard copy-paste, that would surely improve your value. The one part that still has a need is prop bets. If you know all the players and teams of the major sports, making the props could be your entry level job, then you do your thing to shine. And if you are serious, forget about getting residency unless you want to get married (and it's not the same as it was before where you could marry some chic without ever meeting her, they want it legit now) or have a kid. In either case, you'll still be waiting over a year while the paperwork sifts from one place to another. I'd say the 90 day in and out technique is FAR easier, plus you don't need any distractions if you want to make a go of it here. Also, if you aren't worried about an hour of travel by bus, you can go to the other side of San Jose and get a decent place for half the price of what these guys are telling you. The areas listed above are high-gringo populated. Live with the locals and the expenses will drop.
