WW, I said top horses, not all horses. And yes those 4,000 claimers are just that...But they still get taken care of good....It is a tough business, and thats how it should be looked at.

Horses are harvested like cattle in the United States (mainly in Texas).

You probably have, there is a slaughterhouse in DeKalb, Illinois. The rest as far as I know are in Texas one in Fort Worth and the other in Kaufman Texas.

Another issue is wild horses and their fate.

Right now there is a bill in the senate that already passed the house called H.R.249 -- The bill to restore the prohibition of the commercial sale and slaughter of wild free roaming horses and burros.

The House passed it by a 277-137 vote last year, the bill would prohibit the Bureau of Land Management from selling off an estimated 31,000 animals in holding facilities and another 28,500 roaming freely on public lands to who knows what fate.

I believe it is now tied up in the senate commitee on energey and natrual resources. Google H.R.249 if anyone is interested in the actual history and current status of the bill.

This bill was written to prorect wild horses and burros from being slaughtered for profit and is not about horseracing.

The 2 in north Texas have been closed due to the efforts of Boone Pickens.

Guess I'm still a country boy but why is slaughtering and eating horses different than doing the same to cattle?

If you cannot race them nor eat them, the only reason to have them is pets for little girls and pasture ornaments. In that case a lot fewer horses will be allowed to even have a life at all.

To be honest personally I am not passionate on the issue (the world has much more severe problems these days) but I think there still should be a place for wild horses to run free somewhere in our country (natrually the wide open spaces of the west would be most suitable). Wild horses and burros should have the same protection if they come close to extinction as bears, eagles, wolves etc. do.

The treatment of 90% of all racehorses is another matter and an entirely different financial scenario. Throughbreds are bred to race and your analogy of pets for little girls is correct and applies to racehorses also, none of who would exist if horseracing didn't exist.

Bottom line it comes down to the humans themselves that own and care for the race horses, like almost anything in life, some do the right thing and treat their animals humanely and some don't do what is right and take the cheapest route regardless of the welfare of the animal and treat them poorly, causing the horse to suffer. Your basic luck of the draw for the average racehorse. Champions of course are another matter (save for the ill-fated 1986 Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand).

When a horse has to be euthanized because of an injury sustained in a big televised event like a Triple Crown or Breeders Cup race this subject always comes to the fore and there is a public cry for horses to be taken care of with greater care etc. etc..

Unfortunately next week it will be back to business as usual and the general public will for the most part careless what happens to horses of any kind, because they have their own lives to live and will quickly and totally forget about the ultimate plight of your basic $2500 claimer..

Thoroughbreds are bred for speed. Next time your at the track look at their forelegs. Right above the hoof the are the size of my wrist and they weigh at race time a dime and go 40 mph.

ya....bring out the tarp and cover up george washington getting a lethal injection

That is one reason that I don't actually watch the races anymore, even though I am a fan of the sport in general. I cannot stand to see horses break down.

losing the horses is emotional for me even though I love the sport. However, when a horse breaks down Im always much more concerned about how the human jockey is. those guys really put it on the line for us fans...

people came in here saying "its part of the game..horses break down"

but thats not what I was talking about...lmfao

I was talking about how TVG and ESPN downplaying it....so people continue to bet their mortgage

and how the government invites people to bet their money on horses while the states takes out about 35% of the track revenue...not to mention any winnings that are federally taxed over 600-1

what Im saying is....the government says its aaa ooo kkk!!

even though these horses....living animals....are treated like throw away garbage

as far as caring about the crooked jockeys.....I really dont.....those clowns along with the horse trainers and owners play the game....and milk the american public in the process

only 3 jockeys ive seen that were honest....as in I never seen them stand up on a horse or lose on purpose were.....

pincay.....stevens....and P Val.....the rest of em were all stiffs....jerry baily and pat day included....espescially pat day....I seen him run dead last on gentleman at odds of 1/20 in a 4 horse field....$900,000 to show.....and he ran off the board....fucking criminals

I asked about H Racing across the street--and it was not taken as I meant it to be.
I really wanted to ask is there more skill involved in picking winners in racing or more skill ivolved in picking a sports winner. (What I should have asked was : which is more far for the average bettor picking one winner from 2 games or i horse from 8 horses??

It was all lost in translation?
What the government REALLY wants is a "bingo" type situation--pick 6, etc. The word skill in handicapping (betting outcome) has NO meaning from what I gather as to government regulation or non-regulation.
I have no idea what skill has to do with anything here at all!

The word skill comes up frequently with poker? But so WHAT?

are you dillrod's twin? Who told you people are "betting their mortgage" on horses? Just because horse racing is legal in most states, do you think more people bet their 'mortgage' on sports or in casinos or poker or lotto or on horses?

You could make the same argument about any professional atheletes that you are trying to make with horses, do you see how ex-NFL players are treated, guys in all sports are cut and cast aside when they can no longer produce. At least good horses are put out to stud, something many NBA players would love to have in their futures.
