I'm attempting to connect two computers to the same dial up (phoneline) connection. I know it will be slow, but I still want to do it. Both computers have network cards. I have a 5 port hub and 2 cables. I have tried several times to connect the 2 together and have been unable to get the second puter online at the same time as the first. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bunyon - The only why you can make the connection mentioned is through a Proxy Server. One of your PC has to be contacted to the Dial-Up Connection and the other PC using that connection through the Proxy Server.

1) One PC connected to the Dial-Up

2) Run the Cat5 Cable from the first PC (NIC Card) to one of the port on the Hub

3) Use one of the other ports on the Hub to connect to your second PC (NIC Card).

Once that's done, let me know and will setup the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway.

Good luck and keep in touch.

Bunyon -

1) The CAT5 cables (RJ45 Connectors), where they a straight-through?

2) Now you need to download a proxy server (http://www.analogx.com/files/proxyi.exe). This one is free and simple to use. Many more in the market.

Note, the following is on the PC that is connected to Internet Modem, etc.)

3) Install the Proxy Server

4) Go to control panel - network connections - right click on local area network - properties - internet protocol - properties - click on use the following IP Address - 10.0.0.1 - Subnet Mask 255.0.0.0 - Ok

5) Start the Proxy Server that you just installed and pretty much, turn everything "ON".

Let me know once completed. I'll be here for approx. 1 hour.

Regards,

Windows XP has the capability to share internet connections out of the box.
A proxy will work too, but I would try XP first if you have it.

Downloaded the proxy and according to both computers, they are connected to the network. But still unable to get both online at the same time for some reason. Everytime I launch Internet Explorer on the second puter, it still pops up the box asking me to connect or work offline.

I thought you had it completed by now. It's been some time.

Internet Explorer - Tools - Internet Options - Connections - Lan Settings - Proxy Server - Address (10.0.0.1) Port (6588)

Good luck.

This would be on your second PC. The mentioned that can't connect.

Note, for you to have internet connection on the PC 2, PC 1 needs to be "ON" at all times.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help klow.....I did that and the second pc still won't connect. Everything is the way it should be, but when I launch internet explorer on the second pc, I still get the "connect/work offline" box. I have no idea as to what could be wrong.

bunyon -

Go to Internet Explorer - File - "See if Work Offline is Unchecked"

In addition, just to double check something go to control panel - Internet Options - Connections - Lan Settings - Proxy Server - Address (10.0.0.1) Port (6588)

See if it has the Proxy Server Adress with Port.

Good luck
