You all are preaching to the choir here... my girlfriend recently moved in with me (a good idea, or so I thought, to stave off having to get married - well, never been more wrong about anything, the whining is worse than it was before she moved in) and, at first, it really took a toll on my handicapping. Like Tigerbait, I had to start sneaking around to get any research, etc. done... She's totally against it and, to make matters worse, like most women, has absolutely no ability to recognize that just because you enjoy something a bit that could have the POTENTIAL to be bad doesnt mean it is inherently so! It always seems like they've had some friend that had a boyfriend or husband that had a gambling problem so that must mean that you're going down the same road.

Here's how I tried to explain it to her: First and foremost, I am not gambling with money I need... we all need money but I do okay and dont live an overly ostentaiously lifestyle. Justme said it "just right" I only bet with money I can afford to lose. And I really dont hear her complaining when I give her some cash, which she knows is in no small part from weekend wagering, to go shopping etc.

Secondly, I tried to explain to her that in many ways, its no different that the investments most of us make in the stockmarket or otherwise (on a different note, I've really enjoyed reading about your various investment strategies Dawoofdaddy - you're a smart guy). I'm a small-time real estate developer and every day I'm gambling on the piece of land that I buy to develop is going to be a good investment. But I'm not just blindly buying land and just hoping to God that something turns out. I do the research and I make an informed decision. Its no different with plays that I make on football and basketball games or a horse race.

Finally I just told her that every year since I got out of college (6 years ago) I've taken a small portion of my entertainment budget and made that a bankroll.... I've never strayed from it and I've never dipped into any other portion of the larger budget. Furthermore, I said that I'm not looking for her to tell me yes or no, this is something I do for fun and that I would continue to do it whether she liked it or not. She can spend her entertainment budget the way she wanted to and I'll spend mine. This hasnt exactly solve the issue but it has taken it out of her hands somewhat. In all reality, she's a great girl but like Dawoofdaddy says, she should be glad I'm at home watching 20 hours of football every weekend rather than out at the bars like some are!

this is a cool thread, imo. after all, in real life,theres no place to get so much free, potentially useful advise from a bunch of guys (mostly) in the same boat.also, relatively confidential, as long as the mrs doesnt read over your shoulder, which is an invasion of privacy, imo. i think this was an honest appeal for some help. there'll always be some clowns to make light of the situation,but you can have a happy marriage and be a gambler, as long as your losses dont get out of hand to affect you lifestyle. no reason she needs to be invoved at all. certain things are guy things, and this is one of them.talk to us about gambling, we understand. talk to the mrs. about everything but gambling.

i had to pay 700 last year one week and she wigged like you are talking about, it's funny how they forget the alll the cash and shit you bought them.

i learned one thing from that, keep it seperate, consider the gambling money yours and only yours. don't talk about, don't "show here the money", ect.


or make a deposit into your account and keep a record of it, show when she brings it up again show here the deposit and if she doesn't like it take allthe money out and see what she says then.

but only accepts winning. She gets pissed when I give her a

Your wife is what I call a '1 percenter'...There aren't many women in the world like her. Hold on to that gal...she'll keep you grounded in your gambling too and won't let you do anything stupid.

When guys try to hide shit from their wife, they tend to bet more or go further in their betting than they normally would. You sneak around, but eventually get caught and that kills the trust in the marriage. At least this is what happened to me and I got killed by my defiant attitude. I realized it wasn't worth losing my family over and gave it up.

It's funny...I never had a "problem" gambling on football until after I was married.
