Preview: Mariners at Royals

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

James Paxton looks to continue a dominant stretch and record his seventh consecutive victory when the Seattle Mariners visit the Kansas City Royals on Friday for the second contest of their four-game series. Paxton was named the American League Pitcher of the Month for July after going 6-0 with a 1.37 ERA.

The left-handed Paxton has developed into Seattle's ace and is the first pitcher in franchise history to win six games in a single calendar month. He will look to help the Mariners inch back ahead .500, including Thursday's series-opening 6-4 defeat to fall 2 1/2 games behind the Royals for the AL's second wild-card spot. Kansas City, which is 4-0 against Seattle this season, snapped a three-game overall skid and received two homers from journeyman Brandon Moss, who has gone deep 16 times against the Mariners in his career. Lorenzo Cain didn't appear bothered by the hamstring injury that sidelined him Wednesday as he reached base three times (two singles, one walk) for the Royals and stole two bases.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH James Paxton (11-3, 2.68 ERA) vs. Royals RH Jason Hammel (5-8, 4.75)

Paxton struck out 46 batters and walked just six in 39 1/3 innings last month and didn't serve up a single homer. The 28-year-old recorded 18 strikeouts in 13 frames while winning his last two starts - scoreless performances against Boston and the New York Mets. Paxton is 1-0 with a 2.20 ERA in three career starts against Kansas City and has experienced difficulties with Moss (3-for-4, one homer) and Salvador Perez (3-for-7).

Hammel halted a six-start winless stretch when he allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings against the Red Sox in his last turn. The 34-year-old, who grew up just west of Seattle in Port Orchard, is 3-2 with a 3.41 ERA in seven career starts versus the Mariners. Hammel, who is facing Seattle for the first time since 2014, has been roughed up by Robinson Cano (13-for-36, two homers).

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners OF Ben Gamel was hitless in five at-bats in the opener and is 0-for-15 over his last four contests.

2. Kansas City 1B Eric Hosmer was hitless in four at-bats on Thursday after going 15-for-34 during an eight-game hitting streak.

3. Seattle OF Mitch Haniger (concussion/facial lacerations) is experiencing less swelling from being hit by a pitch on Saturday but still is at least a week away from returning.

PREDICTION: Royals 2, Mariners 1

Preview: Phillies at Rockies

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

After winning a series versus one struggling team from the National League East, the Colorado Rockies look to do the same against another when they host the major league-worst Philadelphia Phillies on Friday in the opener of their three-game set. Colorado just took two of three from the visiting New York Mets, scoring five runs in each contest while posting a pair of walk-off victories.

The top third of the Rockies' lineup led the way in Thursday's 5-4 triumph, as Charlie Blackmon, DJ LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado went a combined 8-for-11 with a homer and three RBIs. Arenado registered his league-leading 96th RBI by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning and recorded two hits to improve to 9-for-20 during his five-game hitting streak. Philadelphia remains in search of its first win on its eight-game road trip after being swept in a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels. Nick Williams went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in Thursday's 5-4 setback that completed a set during which the Phillies were outscored 19-5.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Vince Velasquez (2-6, 4.91 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Kyle Freeland (11-7, 3.71)

Velasquez's winless streak reached eight starts on Sunday, when he settled for a no-decision against Atlanta despite scattering six hits over seven scoreless innings. The 25-year-old Californian, who has allowed fewer than two earned runs in four of his last five outings, has not won since defeating the Cubs in Chicago on May 1 - although he missed the entire month of June and more than half of July with an elbow injury. Velasquez is 1-0 with a 4.60 ERA in three career starts against Colorado, including a no-decision on May 25 in which he gave up one run over five innings.

Freeland has won three straight decisions, including a tough outing at Washington on Sunday in which he allowed four runs - three earned - and nine hits over five innings. The 24-year-old native of Denver has given up two runs over 14 1/3 frames in winning his last two turns at home. Freeland, who will be facing Philadelphia for the first time, leads major-league rookies in victories and innings (121 1/3).

WALK-OFFS

1. Rockies C Jonathan Lucroy threw out a baserunner, went 2-for-3, was hit by a pitch and scored the winning run on Thursday in his debut with the team after being acquired from Texas on Sunday.

2. Philadelphia C Andrew Knapp left Thursday's game in the second inning with a bruised right hand and is day-to-day.

3. Colorado OF Carlos Gonzalez went 0-for-4 on Thursday, ending his hitting streak at 11 games.

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

The Los Angeles Angels attempt to extend their home winning streak and continue their charge toward a wild-card spot when they begin a three-game series against the visiting Oakland Athletics on Friday. Los Angeles posted a 5-4 triumph over Philadelphia on Thursday to complete a three-game sweep and stretch its string of success at Angel Stadium to five games.

Mike Trout homered in his second consecutive contest for the Angels, who remained three games behind Kansas City for the second wild card in the American League. Andrelton Simmons brings a 12-game hitting streak into Friday's series opener after going 1-for-3 and scoring the winning run on a wild pitch. Oakland has lost five of its last six road games after suffering an 11-2 defeat at San Francisco on Thursday. Chad Pinder, who returned earlier this week from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for over a month, hopes to remain hot after going 4-for-8 over his last two contests.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Oakland), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Jharel Cotton (5-8, 5.49 ERA) vs. Angels RH Troy Scribner (1-0, 4.50)

Cotton was roughed up by Minnesota on Sunday in his first start since spending nearly a month on the disabled list due to blisters but escaped with a no-decision after yielding five runs on five hits - two homers - and five walks in 3 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old Virgin Islander has performed well on the road this season, posting a 3.26 ERA over seven turns as opposed to a 7.56 mark in six home starts. Cotton defeated the Angels in his major-league debut on Sept. 7 but is 0-2 against them this year after surrendering 12 runs over 9 1/3 frames in two outings.

Scribner will be making his third major-league appearance and first career start on Friday. The 26-year-old native of Connecticut worked a scoreless inning against Philadelphia on Tuesday after yielding two runs over three frames at Toronto in his debut three days earlier. Scribner has posted a 10-3 record and 4.16 ERA in 17 starts and one relief appearance for Triple-A Salt Lake this year.

WALK-OFFS

1. Angels OF Kole Calhoun (hamstring) had been sidelined since Sunday before entering Thursday's contest as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning.

2. Oakland optioned RHP Daniel Gossett to Triple-A Nashville on Thursday - a day after he recorded his best start of the season.

3. Los Angeles OF Cameron Maybin (knee) is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Salt Lake on Friday.

Preview: Diamondbacks at Giants

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

Paul Goldschmidt aims to build off a mammoth performance when the Arizona Diamondbacks open a three-game series against the host San Francisco Giants on Friday. The five-time All-Star first baseman registered the first three-homer performance of his stellar career on Thursday, an outburst that included a tiebreaking blast in the ninth inning, as the Diamondbacks posted a 10-8 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Goldschmidt drove in six runs while raising his season outputs to 25 homers and 85 RBIs as Arizona remained one-half game ahead of Colorado for the National League's top wild-card spot. "It's crazy," Goldschmidt told reporters after the victory. "I know I've never hit three home runs. And then to win that game - it was a good one for our team." Madison Bumgarner will look to slow down Goldschmidt, who is batting .286 with two homers in 49 at-bats against the Giants' ace. The left-hander also would like to see the type of run support provided on Thursday, when his teammates registered seven extra-base hits during an 11-2 trouncing of Oakland.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Anthony Banda (0-1, 6.35 ERA) vs. Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (1-4, 2.92)

Banda will make his second major-league start as a fill-in for All-Star Robbie Ray, who will be skipped in the rotation as he recovers from being hit in the head by a line drive on July 28. The 23-year-old lost his debut against Washington on July 22, when he gave up four runs and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. Banda is 7-6 with a 5.13 ERA in 19 starts for Triple-A Reno this season.

Bumgarner is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in four starts since returning from a shoulder injury stemming from his dirt-bike accident in April. The 28-year-old settled for a no-decision against the Los Angeles Dodgers in his last outing after allowing five hits and striking out seven in seven scoreless innings. Bumgarner, who is 9-7 with a 2.58 ERA in 27 career starts against Arizona, struck out a season-high 11 batters and gave up three runs over seven frames against the Diamondbacks on April 2 but wasn't involved in the decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks 3B Jake Lamb is batting .360 with two homers and eight RBIs against the Giants this season as Arizona owns a 4-3 series lead.

2. San Francisco 1B Brandon Belt has homered twice in three games this month after going deep just once in July.

3. Arizona RHP Fernando Rodney has allowed one hit and struck out 11 over 5 1/3 scoreless innings in his last six appearances.

TOP SU TREND:

The Marlins are 11-0 since Sep 03, 2010 in the first game of a series when seeking same season revenge for a walk-off loss in their last meeting against this team.

TOP OU TREND:

The Nationals are 0-10 OU (-2.45 ppg) since Jul 13, 2013 as a road dog off a game as a favorite in which they did not score after the third inning.

TOP STARTER TREND:

The Rangers are 0-12 since Jul 24, 2012 when Martin Perez starts when they lost as an home favorite in his last start.

TOP CHOICE TREND:

The Astros are 11-0 since Apr 09, 2017 as a 140+ favorite after a loss in which they had at least three times as many hits as runs

# 3 SAILORS HOLIDAY 4/1

# 5 MACKIN AT THE ROXY 8/1

# 1 FLYING CLIFF 8/1

I've got to go with SAILORS HOLIDAY. Will probably come out sharp - I have liked the way this gelding has moved swiftly to the lead recently. MACKIN AT THE ROXY - The speed rating of 63 from his latest contest looks competitive in here. FLYING CLIFF - Posted a formidable speed figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this race.

#5 RESCUE CAT (ML=9/2)
#6 BRANDY (ML=7/5)

RESCUE CAT - Starkey drops her down to this level. You don't need too much more handicapping information to think this horse has a darn good chance at this level. I just may give this one a shot. Should improve off last race where she did run off the board, but was within 5 lengths at the wire. You'll be generating profits right and left by turning your betting money onto this jockey/handler combination. Starkey moves this filly to the dirt today. Look for a chance at a big improvement from the most recent grass race. A repeat of that recent effort on Jul 16th where she garnered a speed figure of 53 looks lofty enough to prove victorious in this affair. BRANDY - The return on investment when Acosta and Delacour team up is out of sight. Jockey jumped on this filly's back for the first ride on July 14th. Should be acquainted with the horse even better in today's race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 WARM SUNSHINE (ML=4/1), #7 THAT TRICKY LADY (ML=5/1), #3 TAP STEP (ML=6/1),

WARM SUNSHINE - Don't feel this racer will do much running in today's race. That last speed figure was substandard when compared with today's class figure. THAT TRICKY LADY - This animal hasn't been close in either of her last couple of outings. Quite unimpressive speed figure last out at Charles Town at 7 furlongs. Don't believe this steed will improve too much in today's race. TAP STEP - Hard to bet this entrant the way she ran erratically last time out of the box. Tough to play this less than sharp equine today. Make her show you something in a sprint race before you wager on her in a race of 7 furlongs. This runner ran a most unsatisfactory speed figure last time out. She shouldn't run better and will likely lose in today's event running that number.

#3 WE WILL RE JOYCE (ML=6/1)
#6 GOODLOOKNBROAD (ML=5/2)

WE WILL RE JOYCE - I like to bet on this handicapping theory, a racer coming back off a strong race within the last month or so. Trainer Miyadi moves this horse down the class scale to face a weaker level today. Look for a solid performance this time out. Last raced at Los Alamitos (Thoroughbre carrying 7 pounds more. The lower weight assigned in this event should serve her well. GOODLOOKNBROAD - Puype brings her right back. I propose you stay with this live filly. Ran a winning race July 9th, but just couldn't catch the victor. Rider jumped on this filly's back for the 1st time on Jul 9th. Should be in touch with the horse even better this race. Here is an appropriate handicapping angle that I've used many times before. Play a filly (like this one) getting Lasix for the second time.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 GOT AN OBSESSION (ML=3/1), #4 ONE FAST BROAD (ML=7/2), #2 WHATYOUCISWHATUGET (ML=4/1),

GOT AN OBSESSION - Trying to beat this thoroughbred in today's event at the value of 3/1. ONE FAST BROAD - Don't believe this pony has what it takes to cross the finish line in first this time. WHATYOUCISWHATUGET - This horse hasn't been near the victor at the finish lately.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Putting our cash on #3 WE WILL RE JOYCE to win. Have to have odds of at least 3/1 or better though

The Walker Group Picks

# 4 WHISKEY BRAVO 3/1

# 8 GEEZE WALLY 9/2

# 7 IMMA BLING 9/2

My choice for this event is WHISKEY BRAVO. Has a very solid shot in here if you like back class. Has performed solidly lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 96 avg Equibase Speed Fig. Has very strong Equibase Speed Figures and has to be considered for a bet in this race. GEEZE WALLY - This jockey and handler team has produced some very solid ROI numbers at this track. Is a solid contender - given the 106 speed figure from his most recent race. IMMA BLING - The Equibase Speed Figure of 98 from his latest race looks quite good in here.
