Preview: Cardinals at Reds

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

A promising start to the season has gone off the rails in a hurry for St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Mike Leake, who aims to get back on track against his former team on Friday in the opener of a three-game series versus the host Cincinnati Reds. Leake has been saddled with a 2-7 mark since May 29 and is 0-4 with a 4.79 ERA in his career against a Cincinnati club with which he spent parts of six seasons.

Yadier Molina scored his team's lone run in a 2-1 setback to Milwaukee, marking St. Louis' fourth loss in seven contests to drop to 4 1/2 games behind first-place Chicago in the National League Central. The 35-year-old is 7-for-15 with two homers, three RBIs and four runs scored during his four-game hitting streak. While the Cardinals remain in contention, the cellar-dwelling Reds dropped a 6-0 decision to Pittsburgh on Thursday for their 15th loss in 20 contests. Joey Votto carries an eight-game hitting streak into his encounter with Leake, against whom he is 7-for-20 in his career.

TV: 6:40 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Mike Leake (7-9, 3.29 ERA) vs. Reds RH Asher Wojciechowski (1-1, 4.50)

Leake owns an 0-2 mark in three meetings with Cincinnati this season despite permitting five total runs in 19 innings. The 29-year-old found himself on the wrong end of a decision on Saturday after yielding a two-run homer to Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt and a 466-foot solo shot to J.D. Martinez in a three-pitch span in the fourth inning. The home-run barrage hasn't been a common occurrence of late for Leake, who had kept the ball in the park in six of his previous seven games.

Wojciechowski assumed a spot in the rotation in place of struggling Tim Adleman, who has been shuffled to the bullpen. "Just wanted to get a different look," Reds manager Bryan Price told reporters of the 28-year-old Wojciechowski receiving Friday's start. "... The one thing that we really want to see is some evolution." Wojciechowski has allowed just one run on four hits and struck out 17 over six relief appearances since his return from Triple-A on July 2.

WALK-OFFS

1. St. Louis 2B Kolten Wong is riding a four-game hitting streak overall, but is batting just 3-for-13 versus Cincinnati this season.

2. Reds 3B Eugenio Suarez is 5-for-13 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored in his last four contests.

3. Cardinals CF Dexter Fowler (strained arm) has resumed baseball activities and will rejoin the team at some point this weekend, according to manager Mike Matheny.

GAME: Detroit Tigers (49-57) at Baltimore Orioles (53-54)

Preview: Tigers at Orioles

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

The Baltimore Orioles are trying to make a move back into contention in the American League wild-card race but keep falling just short in their quest to reach .500. The Orioles will attempt to win for the sixth time in seven games when they host the Detroit Tigers in the second of a four-game series on Friday.

Baltimore won the first three of its seven-game homestand to improve to 53-54 before suffering a 7-5 loss on Thursday despite Manny Machado starting a 5-4-3 triple play in the contest. The Orioles, who are 33-22 at home, are trying to bank as many wins as possible on the homestand before embarking on a 10-game west coast trip that begins in Los Angeles on Monday. The Tigers seemed to bow out of the race by trading away some pieces at the deadline but are winners of five of their last six and are getting strong play from Justin Upton, who homered for the third time in the last five games on Thursday. Detroit will try to make it six of seven behind ace Justin Verlander, who opposes Baltimore’s Kevin Gausman on Friday.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Justin Verlander (6-7, 4.29 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (8-7, 5.37)

Verlander made it through the trade deadline still in a Detroit uniform and is now dealing with rumors that the team placed him on revocable waivers. The former MVP brushed aside any trade talk last time out and dominated the AL-best Houston Astros, scattering five hits over six scoreless innings in a win. Verlander is seeing Baltimore for the first time this season and is 9-5 against the Orioles in his career, including 7-1 with a 2.63 ERA at Camden Yards.

If Baltimore is going to stay in the playoff race in the AL, Gausman will be a big part of the story. The 26-year-old LSU product is fully recovered from an awful start and allowed a total of one run in his last three appearances, including 8 2/3 scoreless innings at Texas in his last outing on Saturday. Gausman is 1-1 with a 4.82 ERA in five career starts against Detroit.

WALK-OFFS

1. Orioles UTIL Ryan Flaherty (shoulder) is progressing in his rehab assignment and could return next week.

2. The Tigers placed RHP Michael Fulmer (elbow) on the 10-day disabled list and promoted veteran RHP Edward Mujica from Triple-A Toledo.

3. Baltimore INF Tim Beckham is 7-for-12 with five extra-base hits in three games since joining the team in a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays.

PREDICTION: Orioles 5, Tigers 1

GAME: San Diego Padres (48-59) at Pittsburgh Pirates (51-56)

Preview: Padres at Pirates

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

David Freese and Starling Marte have begun to heat up during their respective 14-game stretches, although their hot play at the plate hasn't extended to the rest of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Freese and Marte look to ignite a fire under the Pirates on Friday when the team opens a three-game series against the visiting San Diego Padres.

Freese and Marte each registered three-hit performances in Thursday's 6-0 victory over cellar-dwelling Cincinnati, giving the former hits in 12 of his last 14 games while the latter has hit safely in 10 of 14 since returning from an 80-game suspension. The 34-year-old Freese recorded four hits in last week's series against San Diego, although the Padres got the last laugh by winning two of the three contests. Pittsburgh, which has won just three of its last 11 games, looks to cut into its 5 1/2-game deficit behind National League Central-leading Chicago when it begins its series versus San Diego. Jose Pirela has hit safely in 16 of his last 18 encounters, including a 5-for-12 effort in last week's series versus Pittsburgh and a two-run homer in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to Minnesota.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Travis Wood (2-3, 6.42 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Ivan Nova (10-8, 3.75)

Wood put his best foot forward in his first game after being acquired from Kansas City, allowing two runs while striking out seven in six innings in Friday's 3-2 triumph over Pittsburgh. The win was the 30-year-old's first since June 10, ironically in a 12-6 victory over San Diego. "I'm taking this opportunity like it's a fresh start," Wood said. "I've come here and I'm not thinking about anything that happened this season. Just come in, put in the work and help the ball club out."

Nova sustained his second straight loss on Saturday after yielding four runs on eight hits in five innings of a 4-2 loss to San Diego. The 30-year-old Dominican recorded a 6.28 ERA in five July starts and has surrendered 11 homers in his last eight. Nova has pitched significantly better at PNC Park, however, notching a 7-2 mark and a 2.83 ERA at home.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen ignited his current four-game hitting streak with three homers in Sunday's 7-1 rout of San Diego.

2. Padres 1B Wil Myers is 0-for-10 with four strikeouts in his last three games and just 2-for-24 in his last seven.

3. Pirates 1B Josh Bell has an RBI in each contest of his four-game hitting streak.

PREDICTION: Pirates 3, Padres 1

Preview: White Sox at Red Sox

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

The Boston Red Sox did not make any splashy moves at the trade deadline, but some tinkering around the edges is having a big impact on the offense. Rafael Devers and Eduardo Nunez will try to push the Red Sox to a fourth straight win when they host the Chicago White Sox in the second of a four-game set on Friday.

Devers made his major-league debut at Seattle on July 25 and is batting .406 through his first eight games after belting his third homer in Thursday’s 9-5 series-opening triumph. Nunez was picked up from the San Francisco Giants last week and is batting .481 with 10 RBIs in six games with his new team, helping Boston to open a two-game lead over the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East. The White Sox own the worst record in the AL at 41-65 but are getting a glimpse at the future and celebrated the return on Thursday of second baseman Yoan Moncada, who escaped a serious injury in a collision on Monday and returned after a two-game absence. Both teams will show off promising young lefties on Friday when Chicago’s Carlos Rodon opposes Boston’s Eduardo Rodriguez.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Carlos Rodon (1-4, 5.23 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Eduardo Rodriguez (4-3, 4.16)

Rodon is winless in his last four starts but is showing off premium stuff with 20 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings over his last two outings. The 24-year-old pitched well enough to win on Sunday against Cleveland but settled for a no-decision after allowing one run and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Rodon is making his second career start against Boston and took the loss in his first, yielding three runs in six frames.

Rodriguez (knee) is making his fourth start since coming off the disabled list and is still trying to find the form he showed prior to the injury. The Venezuela native did not complete six innings in any of his last three outings and allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks across four frames against Kansas City on Saturday. Rodriguez yielded four runs - three earned - is six innings in his only previous start against Chicago.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox RHP Joe Kelly (hamstring) could be activated off the 10-day DL on Saturday.

2. Chicago OF Willy Garcia will miss 4-6 weeks with a broken jaw suffered in a collision with Moncada earlier in the week.

3. Boston RHP Carson Smith (elbow surgery) is expected to begin a rehab assignment this weekend.

Preview: Dodgers at Mets

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

With Clayton Kershaw sidelined, Yu Darvish will assume the role of ace as he prepares to make his debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at the New York Mets. Darvish will have plenty of pressure on his shoulders, not the least of which is facing New York's Jacob deGrom in a marquee pitching matchup.

Acquired from Texas just as Monday's trade deadline was expiring, Darvish is winless since June 12 and coming off the worst start of his career, but he's eager to join baseball's best team. "This is my first time getting traded during the season, and I was worried a little bit if I could blend into the clubhouse and everything," Darvish said. "But the guys were really great and I feel comfortable. I am looking forward to playing for the first time with the Dodgers." Los Angeles, which is 15-3 since the All-Star break after taking two of three in Atlanta, scored 36 runs in a four-game sweep of New York from June 19-22. The Mets capped a 4-6 road trip in ugly fashion, with Hansel Robles plunking a batter and walking three in the ninth, forcing the winning run home with a Bull Durham-esqe throw to the backstop.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SportsNet Los Angeles, SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Yu Darvish (6-9, 4.01 ERA) vs. Mets RH Jacob deGrom (12-4, 3.29)

Darvish's last start certainly was forgettable as he was rocked for a career-high 10 runs on nine hits over 3 2/3 innings versus Miami, dropping his career record against NL opponents to 8-3. He struck out 12 over eight innings in his previous turn at Tampa Bay but is 0-5 over his last eight starts. Asdrubal Cabrera is 5-for-13 against Darvish, who does not have a decision in three starts versus the Mets.

DeGrom had an eight-start winning streak snapped last time out in Seattle, when he permitted three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out 10 over six innings. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight of his last nine outings and has won five consecutive starts at Citi Field. Justin Turner is hitless in 10 at-bats versus deGrom, who is 0-2 with a 2.94 in five starts against Los Angeles.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets SS Amed Rosario, their top prospect who has two triples in his first three major league games, will make his Citi Field debut Friday.

2. Dodgers SS Corey Seager was 7-for-14 and Cody Bellinger 6-for-15 with three homers in the sweep of New York in June.

3. Cabrera was 6-for-10 in the final two games of the road trip.

Preview: Brewers at Rays

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

The Milwaukee Brewers showed some signs of life by taking two of three from the National League Central-rival St. Louis Cardinals to start the week and hope to ride that momentum when they visit the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday to start a three-game interleague set. The Brewers had lost 11 of 14 contests before edging the Cardinals twice in the last three days, capped by Thursday’s 2-1 triumph.

Ryan Braun owns a four-game hitting streak (6-for-15) and should be back in the lineup after resting Thursday for Milwaukee, which moved within 1 ½ games of the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. The Brewers, who are 9-4 in interleague play, will send Brandon Woodruff to the mound for his major-league debut in the series opener while the Rays counter with rookie Jacob Faria. Tampa Bay has recovered after a rough 2-8 stretch by winning four of its last five and trails Kansas City by one-half game for the American League’s second wild card with the next nine contests slated for its home park. Steven Souza Jr. returned after missing two games with a sore foot to belt a homer and knock in three runs in Thursday’s 5-3 victory at AL-best Houston - the Rays’ third straight win.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Brandon Woodruff (NR) vs. Rays RH Jacob Faria (5-1, 2.93)

Zach Davies was pushed back to Saturday to give Woodruff his first chance in the majors after going 6-5 with a 4.46 ERA in 15 starts at Triple-A Colorado Springs. The 24-year-old Mississippi State product struck out 70 and walked 24 in 72 2/3 frames in his first season at Triple-A. Woodruff, an 11th-round draft pick in 2014, won 14 games at two levels of the minors in 2016 and is 25-23 with a 3.31 ERA over four seasons in the Milwaukee system.

Faria comes in off the shortest outing of his rookie season when he permitted three runs over four innings with a career-high five walks across 92 pitches at the New York Yankees on Sunday. The 24-year-old Californian had posted eight quality starts in the first nine of his career, losing the only time he did not achieve the feat July 19 at Oakland. Faria faces a NL team for the first time and is 3-0 with a 2.81 ERA in four starts at home.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay LF/DH Corey Dickerson made a game-saving catch Thursday and went 5-for-10 in the last two games.

2. The Brewers have scored a major league-high 89 runs in the first inning while the Rays have posted 69 - second-most in the AL.

3. The Rays won two of three games at home in 2014 when they last met Milwaukee.

PREDICTION: Rays 5, Brewers 3

Preview: Yankees at Indians

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

One day after Sonny Gray made his debut with the New York Yankees, left-hander Jaime Garcia will do the same, starting for his third different team in a period of two weeks. Garcia, who had spent his entire career in the National League, was traded to Minnesota on July 24 and promptly shipped to New York after making one start for the Twins.

Ace Corey Kluber and Cleveland spoiled Gray's first start with the Yankees with a 5-1 victory in the series opener, snapping its losing streak at three games. The Indians were below .500 at home for the first half of the season but are 8-0 at Progressive Field since the All-Star break to maintain their 2 1/2-game lead in the American League Central. New York managed only three hits Thursday and has scored four runs during its three-game skid to drop two games behind first-place Boston in the AL East. Struggling sluggers Aaron Judge and Matt Holliday received the night off Thursday but are expected back in the lineup Friday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, YES (New York), STO (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH Jaime García (5-7, 4.29 ERA) vs. Indians RH Trevor Bauer (9-8, 5.25)

Garcia won his third consecutive start in his AL debut, giving up three runs and eight hits while striking out seven over 6 2/3 innings at the Oakland Athletics. It marked the fifth straight outing of at least six innings for Garcia, who was 0-4 during a seven-start outing prior to his current winning streak. While Garcia has never faced Cleveland, he's limited Edwin Encarnacion to a double in six at-bats.

Bauer, who received an extra two days of rest after Wednesday's series finale at Boston was postponed, is coming off a strong outing versus the Los Angeles Angels, tossing a season-high eight innings of one-run ball to win his second straight start. The 26-year-old has struggled in six career starts against the Yankees, posting a 1-4 record and 5.34 ERA. Chase Headley is 4-for-14 with six RBIs against Bauer.

WALK-OFFS

1. Indians SS Francisco Lindor homered in the series opener to run his hitting streak to a career-best 13 games.

2. Yankees LF Brett Gardner was hitless Thursday, snapping his 14-game hitting streak.

3. Indians 2B Jason Kipnis will play in a rehab game Friday and is expected to be activated off the disabled list Sunday.

Preview: Marlins at Braves

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

The Miami Marlins sat 13 games under .500 in late May, but have slowly climbed back toward an even record entering Friday night's series opener at the Atlanta Braves. The Marlins have won six of their past eight contests, taking two of three from National League East leader Washington before Thursday’s off day, to improve to 51-55 on the season as they begin a seven-game road swing through Atlanta and Washington.

Miami second baseman Dee Gordon extended his hitting streak to 13 games with three hits in Wednesday’s 7-0 victory, and is batting .368 in that stretch to raise his average to .300 on the season. Atlanta dropped the rubber match of a three-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday at home, falling 7-4 to lose for the 13th time in its past 17 games since reaching .500 on July 16. Atlanta did have two highlights in Thursday’s loss, as rookie second baseman Ozzie Albies collected his first major-league hit - a three-run homer in the ninth - and right fielder Nick Markakis recorded his 2,000th career hit. The Braves lead the season series with Miami 5-3, winning two of three in Atlanta on June 16-18.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Adam Conley (4-3, 5.11 ERA) vs. Braves RH R.A. Dickey (6-7, 4.01)

Conley has made three starts since rejoining Miami’s rotation following a 12-start stint at Triple-A New Orleans, going 2-0 with a 1.74 ERA while allowing only four runs with four walks and 15 strikeouts. The 27-year-old beat Cincinnati on Saturday, giving up two runs in 7 2/3 innings just five days after firing seven shutout innings in a victory over Texas. Conley is 3-0 in five career appearances (four starts) against Atlanta, winning two of his three starts against the Braves last season.

Dickey did not win any of his six July starts, despite posting a 2.45 ERA and not allowing more than three earned runs five times. He did not surrender an earned run in his last start Sunday at Philadelphia, pitching seven innings and recording eight strikeouts. The 42-year-old knuckleballer lost his only start against the Marlins this season, giving up three runs in seven innings May 14 at Miami.

WALK-OFFS

1. Miami RF Giancarlo Stanton has homered 12 times in his past 23 games, hitting .301 with a 1.256 OPS and 24 RBIs in that stretch.

2. Atlanta is expected to activate RHP Jason Motte (strained back) from the disabled list for the series opener.

3. Miami has won four consecutive series for the first time since 2015 after holding the Nationals to seven runs in three games.

Preview: Blue Jays at Astros

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

The Toronto Blue Jays took two of three from the Chicago White Sox this week but are still hanging off the fringe of contention for an American League wild card spot. The Blue Jays will see how they stack up against the best the AL has to offer when they visit the Houston Astros on Friday for the start of a three-game series.

Toronto is 51-57 and will need to decide soon if it plans to move several veterans who will pass through waivers before the end of this month. The Blue Jays, who are 7-3 in their last 10 games, have veterans like right-hander Marco Estrada, right fielder Jose Bautista and outfielder/first baseman Steve Pearce who would be attractive to a contending team with holes to fill or injury concerns, such as the AL-leading Astros. Houston placed seven players on the disabled list since July 18 and are 1-5 in their last six contests after squandering a lead in a 5-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in the finale of a four-game series on Thursday. One player filling in well during the injury spell is right-hander Brad Peacock, who will take the mound for the Astros on Friday opposite Toronto's Cesar Valdez.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston), TVA Sports, Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Cesar Valdez (1-0, 6.59 ERA) vs. Astros RH Brad Peacock (9-1, 2.62)

Valdez is trying to hold onto a spot in the rotation and was strong in his second start of the season, allowing one run in six innings against Oakland on July 25, before struggling last time out. The Dominican Republic native was ripped for seven runs - six earned - and seven hits over two innings by the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. Valdez worked three innings out of the bullpen at Houston while with Oakland on April 28 and surrendered three runs on four hits and a walk.

Peacock moved into the rotation on May 22 and went 6-1 with a 2.93 ERA in 11 starts before making one more appearance out of the bullpen last Friday at Detroit. The 29-year-old is taking over Lance McCullers Jr's spot in the rotation this time around and is looking to allow two or fewer earned runs for the eighth time in nine appearances. Peacock started at Toronto on July 9 and breezed through six scoreless innings while scattering five hits in a win.

WALK-OFFS

1. Blue Jays C Miguel Montero (groin) is day-to-day.

2. Astros OF George Springer (left quad) is working out on the field, but will not be activated off the disabled list when eligible on Friday.

3. Toronto 3B Josh Donaldson homered in each of the last three games and is 5-for-10 with five RBIs and five runs scored in that span.

PREDICTION: Astros 8, Blue Jays 4

Preview: Rangers at Twins

Gracenote

Aug 4, 2017

Joey Gallo is on a power spree and looks to add to his impressive resume of tape-measure blasts when the Texas Rangers visit the Minnesota Twins on Friday for the second contest of their four-game set. Gallo has belted four homers in his last three games, including a shot estimated at 430 feet in Thursday's series-opening 4-1 win.

Gallo has hit eight homers over his last 13 games to raise his season total to 29, and Thursday's blast was just his third-longest of the week after hitting 456 and 460 shots at home against Seattle. "Just trying to put the bat on the ball," Gallo told reporters after Thursday's victory. "I think good things will happen if I do that. That's my approach right now." Minnesota recorded just three hits in the opener while losing for the eighth time in 10 contests. Both teams are 4 1/2 games behind Kansas City for the American League's second wild-card spot.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Martin Perez (5-9, 5.13 ERA) vs. Twins RH Bartolo Colon (2-9, 7.70)

Perez has dropped three consecutive starts, posting an unsightly 8.31 ERA during that stretch. He was torched for a career high-tying eight runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings of a loss to Baltimore in his last turn. The 26-year-old Perez is 0-2 with a 3.32 ERA in three career starts against the Twins, including a loss on April 24 in which he gave up three runs and six hits over six frames.

Colon is 0-1 with a 5.87 ERA in three starts since joining the Twins after being an abysmal 2-8 with an 8.14 ERA in 13 outings with Atlanta. The 44-year-old did not factor in the decision against Oakland in his last turn, when he gave up three runs and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings. Colon is 20-9 with a 3.57 ERA in 34 career starts against the Rangers but has served up six homers to Adrian Beltre (20-for-74).

WALK-OFFS

1. Twins 2B Brian Dozier was hitless in four at-bats on Thursday and is 5-for-37 with 13 strikeouts over his last eight contests.

2. Texas SS Elvis Andrus is 5-for-8 with a homer in back-to-back victories.

3. Minnesota 1B Joe Mauer went 0-for-4 in the opener and remains tied with Tony Oliva (1,917) for the third-most hits in franchise history.

PREDICTION: Twins 6, Rangers 5
