Preview: Bruins at Stars

Nov 16, 2018

The Boston Bruins got off to an ominous start in the opener of a four-game road trip, unable to slow the potent Colorado Avalanche after losing yet another defenseman to injury. Captain Zdeno Chara exited Wednesday's loss with what appeared to be a knee injury, another blow to Boston's injury-ravaged blue-liners entering Friday night's matchup at the Dallas Stars.

Chara was hurt in the opening period and the short-handed Bruins were unable to withstand the loss of another defenseman, giving up five unanswered goals -four in the third period - of a 6-3 loss. "It seems like we're losing a guy every game," Boston goaltender Jaroslav Halak told reporters. "We need to keep playing hard, and whoever comes in the lineup has to step up." The slumping Stars will be playing their eighth game in a row against a team that made the playoffs in 2017-18, and six of the first seven have been decided by one goal. A 2-1 overtime loss in Boston started a stretch of four losses in five contests for Dallas, which is wrapping up a four-game homestand.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TVA, Sportsnet East, Sportsnet West, Sportsnet Pacific, NESN (Boston),FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE BRUINS (10-6-2): Chara's left knee appeared to buckle when he finished a check along the boards and did not return, becoming the latest casualty in a unit that already is without fellow defensemen Charlie McAvoy (concussion), Kevan Miller (broken hand) and Brandon Carlo (upper body). "It's our whole right side for one thing. And now you're talking about your top guy on the left side," said coach Bruce Cassidy. Rookie Jakub Zboril, a first-round pick in the 2015 draft who was called up from the minors earlier this week, could make his NHL debut against Dallas.

ABOUT THE STARS (9-7-2): Alexander Radulov returned to the lineup in Monday's 2-1 loss to Columbus after sitting out six straight games and 10 of 11 and scored the lone goal to give him 12 points in eight contests this season. "He's a fiery guy," forward Jason Spezza said of Radulov, who had 27 goals and 72 points in 2017-18 in his first season in Dallas. "He means a lot for us. You don't take a guy of that caliber out of your lineup and not miss him." Forward Devin Shore suffered a lower-body injury against Columbus and is expected to be sidelined for one to two weeks.

OVERTIME

1. Bruins F David Pastrnak scored his league-high 17th goal - and fifth in three games - versus Colorado.

2. The Stars placed D Marc Methot (lower body) on injured reserve and recalled D Gavin Bayreuther from Texas of the American Hockey League.

3. Bruins F Jake DeBrusk has a pair of two-goal games in his last four.

Preview: Sabres at Jets

It is far too early for the Buffalo Sabres to start thinking about the spring, but for a franchise that has missed the playoffs seven consecutive seasons a three-game winning streak and a 10-6-2 record is reason for optimism entering Friday’s road contest against the Winnipeg Jets. Buffalo begins a three-game road trip that features back-to-back contests versus the Jets and Minnesota this weekend, but following Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Tampa Bay the Sabres noted something feels different.

“I don’t think we played our best game (Tuesday) night, but we found a way to win and that’s what good teams do,” Buffalo defenseman Zach Bogosian told reporters Wednesday. “We try not to dwell on the past, but maybe that one wouldn’t have happened in the past.” The Jets finally are playing at the level many expected of last season’s Western Conference finalist as Winnipeg has won three in a row and eight of its past 11 games following Wednesday’s 3-1 triumph over defending Stanley Cup champion Washington. Connor Hellebuyck was outstanding in winning his third consecutive start, making 27 saves against Washington’s high-powered offense and holding Alex Ovechkin off the scoresheet. “(Wednesday) definitely was a big one for us,” Winnipeg center Mark Scheifele told the media after the Jets improved to 8-2-1 at home this season.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, MSG Buffalo, TSN3 (Winnipeg)

ABOUT THE SABRES (10-6-2): Center Jeff Skinner scored his 13th goal of the season Tuesday and has seven tallies to go along with one assist in his past six games - moving within one point of 400 for his career. San Reinhart earned an assist on Skinner’s goal, his sixth assist in his past five games as the Sabres improved to 9-0-0 when he registers at least one point. Carter Hutton stopped 29-of-30 shots on goal and in his past three appearances has posted a .946 save percentage.

ABOUT THE JETS (11-5-1): Forward Blake Wheeler extended his point streak to 11 games with an assist Wednesday, and has 18 assists with a plus-8 rating during that stretch. Winnipeg entered Thursday leading the NHL in power-play percentage (34 percent) and Scheifele’s marker with the man advantage Wednesday gave him eight goals and 16 points in his past 10 games. The Jets have scored on the power play in 14 of their 17 games this season and 12 of their past 13 contests.

OVERTIME

1. Winnipeg G Laurent Brossoit, who is 3-0-0 but has not played since Oct. 26, is expected to start Friday.

2. The Sabres early-season success will be tested with six games in the next nine days, including a visit to Pittsburgh on Monday after the weekend back-to-back.

3. Buffalo seeks its first four-game winning streak since Dec. 9-15, 2014.

Preview: Kings at Blackhawks

Nov 16, 2018

The Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks alternated hoisting the Stanley Cup over a four-year period from 2012-2015, but the main thing the clubs have in common this season is that each has already fired its head coach. Fresh off snapping an eight-game losing streak and giving new coach Jeremy Colliton his first victory, Chicago will host the Kings on Friday night.

Offense has been a struggle for both teams as Chicago scored only 14 goals during its eight-game slide and halted the swoon with a 1-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday night. "This group needed some good things to happen," Colliton told reporters. "They needed it. They need some reinforcement that the sun's coming up on this." What started as a promising seven-game homestand ended with three straight losses for Los Angeles, which was outscored 9-2 during the skid. Tuesday's 5-1 setback to Toronto marked the eighth time in the last 15 games that the Kings have been limited to one goal or fewer.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, NHL Network, FS West (Los Angeles), NBCS Chicago

ABOUT THE KINGS (5-11-1): Things could not look much bleaker for Los Angeles, which is scoring a league-worst 2.0 goals per game and is down to its No. 3 goaltender due to injuries. Peter Budaj made his first start and second appearance of the season against Toronto and lasted fewer than five minutes into the second period before he was yanked in favor of Calvin Petersen, who stopped 15 of 16 shots in his NHL debut. Friday's game could mark the Kings debut of speedy forward Carl Hagelin, who was acquired from Pittsburgh earlier this week in exchange for Tanner Pearson.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (7-8-4): Chicago needed a big performance from someone to end its slide and Corey Crawford responded by turning aside all 28 shots he faced to register his first shutout in just over a year. Crawford, who posted his 24th career shutout, did not play after Christmas last season due to a concussion and did not return to the lineup until the sixth game this year. "We're feeling good right now. We're getting used to the systems and playing better with it," said Crawford, who is 9-5-1 with a 2.65 goals-against average and one shutout versus the Kings.

OVERTIME

1. Blackhawks F Patrick Kane has 12 goals and 35 points in 36 games versus Los Angeles.

2. Kings D Dion Phaneuf had an assist Tuesday to halt his 16-game season-opening point drought.

3. Los Angeles (8-for-56) and Chicago (8-for-58) rank in the bottom five in the league on the power play.

Preview: Capitals at Avalanche

The reigning Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals could be short-handed when they continue a four-game road trip against the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night. The Capitals dropped a 3-1 decision at Winnipeg on Wednesday in a game in which goalie Braden Holtby was a late scratch before leading scorer Evgeny Kuznetsov and fellow forward T.J. Oshie went down with injuries during the contest.

Holtby will be re-evaluated for an upper-body injury while Kuznetsov (team-high 21 points) was held out for precautionary reasons after taking a headshot in the first period and Oshie left when he was thrown on his head by Josh Morrissey late in the contest. The Capitals, who said all the players are day-to-day, have lost three of their last four contests and scored once in each of the three setbacks while Colorado rebounded from a five-game losing streak to win its last two. The Avalanche fell behind two goals against Boston on Wednesday before scoring the last five to post an impressive 6-3 victory as the top line of Mikko Rantanen, Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog registered three goals and three assists. “It’s big for us because we just went through a little stretch where we couldn’t win, and we went into Edmonton and had a really nice game (4-1 win Sunday) … ,” Colorado coach Jared Bednar told reporters. “You have a great game, you want to repeat it.”

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCS Washington Plus, Altitude (Colorado)

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (8-7-3): In addition to the three injuries Wednesday, Michal Kempny missed the game with illness and fellow defenseman Brooks Orpik has been out since late October with a lower-body ailment. Captain Alex Ovechkin has not scored in four games, but leads the team with 12 goals while tying for second in points with center Nicklas Backstrom (team-high 16 assists) at 20. Defenseman Dmitry Orlov is beginning to find his top form with two goals, two assists and a plus-4 rating in two games after managing two points and a minus-8 in the first 16.

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (9-6-3): Colorado’s top line has combined for 75 points in the first 18 games with Rantanen leading the way at 29 and Landeskog along with MacKinnon each recording 12 goals. The Avalanche can turn it on even more offensively when their defensemen are activated and blue liners Tyson Barrie (four points, last three games) along with Samuel Girard (five assists, last five contests) are on a roll. Center Alexander Kerfoot has also picked up his production level with eight of his 14 points in the last six contests and goals in back-to-back games.

OVERTIME

1. The Capitals have won seven of the last eight meetings, but fell 6-2 at Colorado last season.

2. Washington F Tom Wilson, who scored in his first game back from a long suspension Tuesday, was a minus-2 against Winnipeg.

3. Colorado C Tyson Jost has registered two of his three goals on the season in the last three games.

Preview: Blues at Golden Knights

The Vegas Golden Knights gave fans a glimpse last time out of what it was like during their inaugural season and hope to build off that effort when they host the last-place St. Louis Blues on Friday night. The Golden Knights reached the Stanley Cup finals in their maiden NHL voyage before struggling with injuries and inconsistency through the first quarter of this season, but looked sharp in a 5-0 victory over Anaheim at home Wednesday.

“We played a full 60 minutes,” Vegas forward Alex Tuch told reporters. “At times, we gave up a few odd-man rushes, but everyone was on the same page, dialed in and working hard. It makes it easy on everyone. When you’re working as a five-man unit, this team especially I think is unstoppable.” The Golden Knights lost eight of their first 13 games in 2018-19 after falling 5-3 at St. Louis on Nov. 1 and have split six contests since, while the Blues continue their see-saw campaign. St. Louis looked ready to go on a run after wins over San Jose and Carolina last week completed a 4-1-0 stretch, but has dropped one-goal games to Minnesota (3-2) and Chicago (1-0) since to remain at the bottom of the Central Division. “We just have to find ways to win right now,” Blues coach Mike Yeo told reporters of his team, which is 0-4-3 in one-goal games. “That’s what it comes down to.”

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS Midwest (St. Louis), AT&T Sportsnet Rocky Mountain (Vegas)

ABOUT THE BLUES (6-7-3): St. Louis had a 28-19 edge in shots Wednesday, but was shut out for the first time this season to add to the frustration for a team that ranked eighth in scoring (3.25 per game) entering Thursday. “We’ve been scoring tons of goals and giving up a lot and then we can’t score and we only give up one,” Blues center Tyler Bozak told reporters Wednesday. “It’s a tough loss. I thought we did a lot of good things, but we have to get back to work.” Center Ryan O’Reilly leads the team with 21 points, including 17 in the past 11 contests and five goals in a five-game span.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (8-10-1): Center Cody Eakin boasts three goals in his last two outings and six points during a five-game streak after scoring twice in Wednesday’s victory. “I’m just having fun,” Eakin, who has seven goals after netting 11 all of last season, told reporters. “I think that’s important to enjoy it and have fun. Pucks are going in right now. There will be times when they aren’t, but I’ll try and ride it.” Tuch also scored in the win over Anaheim and owns 11 points in 11 games since starting the season on injured reserve - six during a four-game point streak.

OVERTIME

1. St. Louis F Jaden Schwartz has three points in the last three games after posting four in his first 11 contests this season.

2. Golden Knights F Jonathan Marchessault, who leads the team with 15 points, has two goals and an assist in three games versus St. Louis since arriving in Vegas.

3. Blues C Brayden Schenn (upper body) has missed four straight contests and is questionable for Friday.

Preview: Maple Leafs at Ducks

Nov 16, 2018

The Toronto Maple Leafs got off to a rough start on their four-game road trip but look to sweep the California portion when they visit the offensively challenged Anaheim Ducks on Friday. Toronto suffered a 5-1 loss at Boston on Saturday but has bounced back with victories in Los Angeles and San Jose, giving it five wins in its last six overall contests.

Kasperi Kapanen scored a pair of goals in Thursday's 5-3 triumph over the Sharks, ending his seven-game drought while eclipsing the career high of seven he set last season. While the Maple Leafs have scored at least five goals in three of their last four contests, Anaheim has registered a total of two over its last three games. The Ducks, who were blanked 5-0 in Vegas on Wednesday, have yet to net more than three tallies in a contest this month and haven't surpassed that amount since posting a 4-1 home victory over the New York Islanders on Oct. 17. Anaheim is in the midst of a stretch during which it plays 11 of 13 games at home and is 3-2-2 at Honda Center in that span.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, TSN4 (Toronto), Prime Ticket (Anaheim)

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (13-6-0): Mitch Marner took the team lead in points (25) on Thursday, moving one ahead of defenseman Morgan Rielly after recording a goal and two assists. John Tavares has been wielding a hot stick of late as he enters Friday with a four-game goal-scoring streak and a run of seven straight contests with a point. The 28-year-old center scored his team-leading 12th goal in the win over the Sharks, giving him five tallies and five assists during his point streak.

ABOUT THE DUCKS (8-9-3): Cam Fowler will have to wait a while to get his name etched in the team's record book as he is slated to undergo facial surgery Friday. The 26-year-old, who is one assist away from tying Scott Niedermayer (204) for the franchise lead among defensemen, suffered a complex right facial fracture involving the cheekbone, orbital bone and upper jaw bone when he was hit in the face with a puck during Monday's shootout win over Nashville. Rickard Rakell, who leads the team with 13 points, remains in search of his 100th career goal as he is mired in a six-game drought.
