Cadillac, you hit the nail on the head. There is something in gamblers that implicity enjoys self-abuse, hardship, challenges. If we were alive 150 years ago, we would be participating in the California gold rush, etc.

Who wants to live longer anyway? Enjoy it while it lasts and burn hard. I'd rather die a few years earlier and have had all the adrenalin rush from gambling than live longer and become decrepid and dependant on others.

This brings up a better question.

Assume gambling DOES shorten your life by 3-5 years. Would you be willing to stop gambling?

Its alot more than that, I hope my memory is somewhat accurate, I once read some sort of scientific study that said it takes off like 15 years...

IMO we come on this world to enjoy it as much as possible. If gambling gives you greater enjoyment in your life then be prepared to accept the consequences which may be shorter life etc.

All the good things in life seem to be bad for you but hey if you cut all these things out - how dull would life be? It might increase your life expectancy by 5 years but probably feel like 50.

I think to make the bold statement that "gambling decreases life expectancy", is like saying that a pitcher who has more strikouts than walks is a winning pitcher.

It's nowhere near as simple as this. For me personally, without the mental challenge that gambling presents...I think that I might allready be dead. The side effects of gambling are diffferent and what happens to people that "enjoy" it run the full sprectrum. Now if you said a person with a severe cumpulsive gambling habit, would have a lower life expectancy than one who does not gamble at all....then "maybe" lower. But that too is a wide generalization.

How about this : Divorce amoung all couples runs in the 50 to 55% bracket. Now, would that figure be higher for gamblers? I would say yes, IF; only one of the people was a gambler.

Genes...Blood lines....determine life expectancy....FAR FAR FAR MORE than any gambling determines it.

What about the stock market? What about the stress of having children, dealing with their problems etc...What about being married to someone who cheats on you? So many things, its how you handle stress!

I wish I knew how to handle stress better.... I believe exercise and fitness atleast helps offset some of the side effects of not handling stress well...

They say owning a fish tank will help people with stress....stress must be dealt with!

I need to read up on this and really start handling stress better...

I would like to see a breakdown of just how exactly gambling stress will take years off your life, that would be very interesting!

I think the one positive element that stands out right away...you get to exercise your mind, and for those who are passionate about sports, it is enjoyable to make your own lines and compare....that is a positive, mind exercise.

VT:

Without reservation, my answer to your question is affirmative. The anxiety and subsequent stress is additive over time and unless a gambler has a means of releasing those elements, the body will eventually show signs that can result in a wide, wide variety of illnesses that at their worst result in death. That being said, it does not mean one cannot or should not choose to participate, but rather understand that one's health can ultimately be affected and manage one's health properly in order to minimize the affects of the anxiety and stress.

Life itself is a gamble, therefore taking a side or two on some games never hurt anyone.

I personally find a challenge in evaluting the unknown future.

just remember all those little things you do.....not looking at scores, or avoiding certain aspects of a website, or changing channels or not looking at your own team pitch, just hit, all those little things you guys talked about....

you think you do it for fun?

Ummmm, no, and its not good for you either.....

the toll on health is one matter, the toll on family life is a much more apparent result of gambling.

hired a babysitter today to watch kids to take out wife on first date in ages.

it was very hard to resist not getting down on the afternoon games.

had I done so, the date would have been consumed with wondering what the scores are

Slimmy I don't watch my team bat (when trailing) , if the score is tied or I'm winning I can watch...only baseball!

The one bet that really stresses me out, is a basketball UNDER....I am literally holding my breath on every shot! I know that is bad...

The only other way I can think to lower the stress is lower the wagers and play for fun...100 bucks a game would be like taking 80-90% of stress out of it ....
