Do you think my reason for not investing in a business is stupid?

Can someone tell me why these people CAN'T get bank accounts? I think Carolla went on a rant similar to this on the Lt Gov't of CA or something (Gavin Newsom) and he really had no answer other than cultural divide, education.

Have a friend that owns 3 of these places. Guy has more money than G O D

I could understand everyone's thinking. but they do have to cash their Checks somewhere. get their Money Orders, pay Bills

There are a Ton of people that Don't have Bank accounts, or just can't get one. So they need to cash those Checks.

My friend told me a story many years ago....

He had plenty of regular customers, and one day this old lady said to him, you need to help me.
My daughter gets her Check each month and because she doesn't have proper ID to cash her checks at his place of business, she goes to a guy that has a Crack Den and buys the check off of her ( don't know how he cashes them ) but he must have some type of scam.
Anyway.. she goes to him and she gets screwed on the Check, plus the mother is worried that the daughter is doing Drugs
My friend helped the daughter get a State ID from DMV ( she didn't drive or own a car )
so the Daughter get to cash her check at the Cash checking place.

I know this is not the Norm, and there are some Fuked up stories about Cash checking places. But they Need to cash their Checks.

you don't need a bank account to cash a check. you just need to present it at the issuing bank. if the payer of the check has sufficient funds, the cash is yours.

FWIW I'd invest in it if the #s look good.

Seems like a fairly passive business that can print $ in an area with the right demographics.

Doesn't mean you have to own it forever but they are providing a service in a free marketplace. Sure $40 on 400 in a week sounds ridiculous, but NOBODY would lend these people $ otherwise. The debt is uncollateralized and there isn't recourse if they don't pay.

I should have been clearer, it is primarily a payday loan place, that also does check cashing.

If the #s look right I'd say just do it. It sounds a little callous but it is basically a legalized loan shark.

While the interest rate is like 150-200%, if it wasn't those places wouldn't be able to operate.

100% right... wasn't thinking about that because haven't had a Normal job since my Teens

But I have seen people in line at the Bank cashing their Pay checks.

I was thinking more on the lines of welfare and SS checks

Not sure what state you live in (i think TX?)

A lot of states are starting to put in regulations against these places and cap the interest rate at 36% which obviously isn't very good when you consider the risk in the actual debt you are issuing.

Although if you are in TX that seems like the last state to give a shit but with changing demographics then who knows.

can those be cashed at a gov't office?

if not, i would think there'd be some federal law that mandates commercial banks to open accounts for such check recipients?

Two more things:

1. Probably the most interesting statement made on the 30 for 30 doc "Broke" was when the player said he cashed his first $400k check at a check cashing place.

2. I'm a fiscal libertarian. I don't think these places should be made illegal or anything. I just couldn't sleep at night personally knowing what my business was pretty readily doing. I also couldn't be a bookie if I knew each and every bettor I took had no business making the size of bets they made and if I was a car salesman, I wouldn't squeeze people into a new Cadillac when all they could afford was a Honda civic.

I think some people could sleep at night running one of those places, I'm not one of them.

I dont see anything wrong with a check cashing business, the pay day loans I feel do take advantage of people. But... no one is forcing those people to take the loans. They are voluntarily walking through the door and signing their names themselves. They could go other places for money. Pawn shop, borrow, cc.. etc. Its not the only option out there....I do know they deal with a lot of fraud

I was asked last week to invest a check cashing business. The location and opportunity are really outstanding, but I turned down the opportunity because I said, "I am not interested in a business that takes advantage of the disenfranchised or downtrodden." I have always been steadfast in not getting involved in certain types of business that take advantage of people. Granted that is my perception.

If you have to ask, it means you have a conscience. If you have a conscience, this isn't the business for you.

When I first starting managing my own 401k, I didn't care, but now I actively avoid buying stocks of companies I have moral objections to like Monsanto, Philip Morris, Altria, Halliburton, etc.

You are technically correct, but I feel most wind up there because they have no alternatives.

I hear you man. And props for not selling out and just looking at the money side of things. Drug dealers can make the same argument "no one is forcing them to do drugs" lol I wouldnt want to be involved in that kind of business either. Dont 2nd guess yourself on not getting involved if this is a business that bothers you. There are lots of other opportunities out there

There can be fees for that, BOA charges $5 to cash their own checks if you don't have an account and fingerprints you....not cool if you are an alien, fugitive, etc.

I would get many people in my bar that worked labor pool and would cash their checks and just keep whatever change was coming like if the check was for $52.35, I keep the $.35. It did wonders for my business because it would suck the guys into having a few pops everyday after work. I never once felt bad about doing that.
