Legendary announcer Curt Gowdy has died at 86

http://cbs4boston.com/sports/local_story_051111835.html

CBS4) BOSTON Former Red Sox and NBC television broadcaster Curt Gowdy died at his home in Florida Monday, after a long battle with leukemia. He was 86 years old.

Gowdy's family was with him at the time of his death.

He was the radio voice of the Red Sox from 1951 to 1965. That time included his famous call of Ted Williams' final home run in his final at-bat at the end of the 1960 season.

Gowdy left the Red Sox to join NBC Sports, where he was the network's lead television broadcaster for it's baseball game of the week. From 1966 to 1975, he called the play-by-play for every World Series and All-Star game for NBC.

In his long career, he also announced Super Bowls, NCAA basketball championships and the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

Probably my all-time favorite MLB broadcaster.

His SATURDAY game of the week broadcasts for NBC Sports with Tony Kubek were the best.

I grew up listening to Curt calling Red Sox games in the 50's on local TV in Boston.. He was the voice of the Red Sox in New England for years.

RIP Curt.

Curt was one of the all-time bests. For us growing up in the midwest, he was probably the first T.V. sportscaster we can remember.

Yep, us 40+ ones all grew up with saturday game of the week with Curt Gowdy alongside Tony Kubek, (& Peewee Reese going way back). I always echo what Gowdy claims as the most stoic, exciting moment in sports history when Joe Namath ran off the field on the Orange Bowl in Jan. '69, raising his finger signifiying We're #1...

Some of the fondest memories of my childhood were the Saturday day of the game with Tony and Curt.

Damn!

Sad news indeed....some of my earliest memories are of Curt Gowdy's voice (doing the World Series highlight films with the Orioles) whether it be MLB game of the week, the World Series or calling the NFL on NBC.

As others have mentioned, great voice.

Yes he did.

Also, he hung around long enough to see the Red Sox win the W.S. , I remember seeing him in attendance.

A decorated career indeed

In his forty years as a sports broadcaster, Curt has covered almost every major sporting event, including 16 World Series, 12 Rose Bowls, 7 Olympic Games, and 8 Super Bowls.

I'm not sure anyone has done more WS and SB's combined...what a life he had.

One of the top 3 voices ever, and I wouldn't hesitate to call him #1.

RIP
