Even if he would have known that, when you're in the moment and you have a barb impaling your chest underwater I imagine it would be difficult to withhold the natural instinct to pull it out. Interesting point though. Maybe he'd have survived if he left it in, but considering the pain he'd have been in with it apparently lodged into his heart, it might have been better to just die then go through a long period of unimaginable pain.

not to mention, wasnt the barb attached to the rest of the stingray? or does it release it in its victim?

Experts down here in FL were quoted on news last night that they are aware of only 3 other deaths being caused by sting rays and those were barbs to the heart as well.

Animal Planet with a great episode on last night...Confessions of a Croc Hunter or something like that filmed in 04...was interviews with him, wife, close personal friend, his dad, and the producer of the show, even had a short interview with his daughter Bindy (named after his favorite croc). He was brought to tears speaking about his mother and Bindy...said the only thing that will make him walk away from his environmentalist life style and zoo is the day his kids are ready to take it over...and could see the passion he had in teaching them everything he knew about animals and the wild. Sad that they aren't going to have learned what he possessed to take over his zoo and life. Hopefully his father is around long enough to teach them a thing or two.

nobody here has the guts to do what he did. That man feared nothing.

he also seemed like a cool dude that you could hang out with at a bar.

don't kid yourself, his name will live on for a very long time.

Instead of calling X a bitch, try to understand where she is coming from. Could you blame someone for not being a fan of a man who clearly chose to be irresponsible with a innocent child? No human in their right mind would do what he did. I could definitely understand why some might not be a fan of his. People make mistakes but a big difference between an honest mistake & just being a fucking moron.

So because you believe someone is a moron, or because you dont believe in the parenting methods of their own child, you are not sympathetic that they are dead?

Wow.

I would trust Steve with my one month old in his arms feeding a croc he's fed 20,000 chickens to than my one month old in most people's houses with dogs or with any woman driving a car.

Also I imagine the Stingray's natural instinct would have been to remove it's tail and swim away, not stay there, so I doubt his life would have been saved that way anyhow..

actually they can detach their barb....i have read up on stingrays since moving to FL last year just because i was curious. A stingray can either remove its barb or break it off...seems the case here was the stingray broke off the barb after penetrating into the chest of the croc hunter.

his only chance woulda been if someone took a knife or something, cut the barb off the fish, left it in place, and pray you don't still bleed to death or get poisoned before you make it to the OR. even then, you could die on the table depending on the nature of the injury.:Sad Face:

Removal or not, how much of a chance did he have really? The thing was in his heart.

also, must wait for the autopsy to really know that it was in the heart. no matter what, the chances of survival was bleak. his only chance was not to remove the barb though.:cryingcry
