Just like a "golden bb". Right between the eyes. That is like winning back to back lottos. He was known to be wreckless/careless and of all the real dangerous stuff he got away with he got nailed by a total fluke. You are taking one in ten million. We used to fish for them in the bay and Pearl, where there were tons of them and Hammerheads. Out of the water they just flop around but you keep away from that barb. Just like a catfish. But in the water they are powerful with those wings. The small ones are even at petting zoos, like Monterrey Aquarium. They are real docile and learn to be human friendly. Sounds like a few problems were proximity, too close, combined with shallow water, no way to get out of way or for ray to swim deeper, and cameraman out front, giving the ray a boxed in feeling. They will always swim away first, even sprint if threatened, using the barb is a pinned defensive move in case of no escape attacks. So the ray was just doing what it's species have forever.

As far as him in the croc cage with his infant, he went directly under Michael Jackson dangling his kid off a balcony column. Needless risking your own children's welfare. In both cases I felt a court would find them guilty of child endangerment. I don't care if there were twenty croc handlers standing by with rifles. What is the point? Did the infant ask to be in photo op? Did he sign a consent form? No, he was stuck with a reckless dad who endangered him needlessly. I could careless if he would play ride the crocs when he was alone. His life, his choice. Infants are dependant on their parents to make those decisions for them. Very wreckless decision.

That being said he will be missed by millions. Especially his widow and kids. My prayers go out to them. He brought happiness and enthusiasm to the world and advanced conservation efforts and public awareness. Part of his appeal was his recklessness, staged or not. Obviously this was not staged. Will they ever show the film?

Best Wishes...OF :howdy:

Your Post shows how little you know about this great Man. He saved many lives by educating people as to the dangers involved. He was a great voice for conservation in this World as He loved Nature and the animals that occupied this world. He will be sorely missed by most. RIP

Kermit, I could not have said it better. Thank you, LT

Actually, you reap what you sow - unless you're talking about macrame or something.

Phew. Thank goodness for Mr. Spellcheck. Otherwise my point would have never been understood.

Again, thanks for your invaluable contribution.

Seriously.

That wasn't a spelling error on your part. You typed exactly what you intended. Sad.

They were just saying that on the footage he ripped the barb out of his chest just before he died. That is INSANE.

Can you imagine ripping a stingray out of your chest as the last thing you do before you DIE?!

Really? I thought in the press conference they said it probably killed him instantly and he didn't feel anything.

And he was filming a show so all of it was caught on tape. Wonder if that'll ever be leaked. Probably not for the sake of his family.

i am a surgeon with experience in trauma.though i am relatively ignorant wrt stingrays, i can tell you that you should NEVER EVER pull out a knife or any other object that impales you. a trauma surgeon removes the object in the OR where you are prepared to control the bleeding and repair the damage. it is possible that irwin was not as prepared as he thought he was. he may've sealed his fate by removing the barb which could have tamponaded the injury (ie. plugged the hole). maybe a little basic first aide would've helped. very very sad.:Sad Face:

Even if he would have known that, when you're in the moment and you have a barb impaling your chest underwater I imagine it would be difficult to withhold the natural instinct to pull it out. Interesting point though. Maybe he'd have survived if he left it in, but considering the pain he'd have been in with it apparently lodged into his heart, it might have been better to just die then go through a long period of unimaginable pain.

Hope they can keep that tape away from public viewing, (i know some will say it could be viewed as educational as what not to do and the dangers of these fish). Just think the family would not want that tape out.

Also agree with Xpanda about the croc incident with his child. Bad choice there. Its not uncommon to hear about trainers getting hurt from their animals.

Also I imagine the Stingray's natural instinct would have been to remove it's tail and swim away, not stay there, so I doubt his life would have been saved that way anyhow..
