West April Forecast
March 30, 2017

Lots of agendas drive the final weeks of the regular season. Some teams have long resided in their tanks since coming out of the All-Star break while others are ramping up for when most eyes really start watching. Here are some notes to help determine who to ride or fade as playoff berths, seeds and draft lottery odds are all decided between now and April 12.

Dallas Mavericks:
The Mavs will never quit on a season, so even though they suffered a tough loss in New Orleans on Wednesday that realistically ended their playoff hopes, look for them to push forward even when officially eliminated. They'll wrap up a five-game road trip on April 5 at the Clippers and close their home schedule against the Spurs and Nuggets, so they'll play a major role in the West playoff race. They'll visit Memphis twice and participate in a couple of back-to-backs where Rick Carlisle may find a night off for Dirk Nowitzki, but you'll see a well-coached team sharing the ball and defending down the stretch. That should make it awfully enticing to take points with Dallas playing spoiler as it misses the playoffs for only the second time since 2000. Recommendation: Ride

Denver Nuggets: Following victories in six of eight, the Nuggets have dropped two straight as they continue a five-game road trip in Charlotte on March 31. Any hope of making the playoffs will hinge on a group that hasn't fared well outside of Denver to do exactly that with the season on the line. They'll play a home-and-home against both the Pelicans and Thunder, teams that they're 1-3 against this season. That's not reassuring, though the lone win came in New Orleans to start the season and they had won four of five on the road before falling behind the Blazers by losing in Portland, so there's definitely room for optimism. After a rash of injuries, the Nuggets are finally healthy with Kenneth Faried back. Veteran Jameer Nelson has done a nice job in place of benched point guard Emmanuel Mudiay, so he'll give Denver a fighting chance. Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari, Faried, Mason Plumlee, Nelson and Gary Harris form a nice supporting cast around budding star center Nikola Jokic, so it will be interesting to see how much fight they all have. Recommendation: Fade cautiously

Golden State Warriors
: After finding their range, both shooting it, and on the defensive end, they've proven they're the NBA's best team despite losing Kevin Durant. Since they're getting him back, the last few games are going to be about getting him re-acclimated and up to speed, which may lead to a few meaningless losses or win-no covers. By dominating a showdown in San Antonio on the second night of a road back-to-back that started in Houston, the Warriors reasserted their dominance and put themselves in line to coast to the No. 1 seed throughout the entire playoffs. With six of the last seven games coming at home, you'll be laying heavy points the rest of the way. Steve Kerr and last year's 73-win group recognize the importance of resting and handling these last few weeks cautiously, so keep in mind you'll be trusting an improving but inconsistent bench group more often. Recommendation: Fade cautiously

Houston Rockets: James Harden's left wrist looks like it will be a troublesome issue going forward. He's admitted feeling pain and not being able to follow through, but is relying on ice and treatment to keep him going. Unless any mandates come down from the front office or head coach Mike D'Antoni, his intent is to play. Patrick Beverley has talked about sitting out and resting as disrespecting the game. This sounds like they're backing themselves into a corner they really shouldn't get too comfortable in. Because they're going to be the No. 3 seed, it's not like they have anything left to play for but entering the playoffs as healthy as possible. Ryan Anderson, dealing with an ankle injury, can't come back until he's 100 percent. Harden deserves to go for the MVP, but not at the expense of the greater good. We'll see how things unfold. They've got one back-to-back left, so we'll see who trots out there that second night to play the Clippers on April 10. If they're going to play out the string, they'll finish strong. I expect them to find ways to strategically rest guys so that they miss as few games as possible but still avoid some of the grind. Recommendation: Ride cautiously

Los Angeles Clippers:
After closing out March with a back-to-back, L.A. has one of the friendlier schedules over the final two weeks, playing at Staples in four of five, which is the fewest number of games left for any team in April. The Clips will definitely be motivated in the chase for a No. 4 seed that would give allow them to remain home even longer, providing an advantage entering a first-round series. Austin Rivers is dealing with a left hamstring issue and will certainly be out until it's completely healed. There's the requisite amount of time to rest and motivation to finish strong to make this group worth backing consistently. Recommendation: Ride

Los Angeles Lakers
: They've been in tank mode, as they should be, since Magic Johnson took over. They need to finish with a top-three pick to keep it or risk losing it to Philadelphia thanks to no lottery protection. That means every game from here on out is basically a must-lose since they're stuck in a race with a Suns team also concentrating on developing youth and improving their chances to land the No. 1 selection in the deepest draft in years. Brandon Ingram has been sidelined by knee tendonitis and Nick Young could also end up being shelved the rest of the way. Luke Walton's team should lose almost exclusively despite playing out the string with five of seven at Staples, where smart Lakers fans should be cheering against them in any close games. Recommendation: Fade

Memphis Grizzlies: Barring a late flurry or a total collapse, the Griz are going to be the No. 7 seed in the West, which means they're going to play San Antonio. Would they rather play Houston? Considering Memphis has beaten the Rockets twice, they would certainly rather deal with them than the Spurs, but there's no guarantee they can catch anyone and reach No. 6. That means making sure Marc Gasol is 100 percent back from a nagging foot injury instead of risking him complicating matters takes priority. Although they close the season with four consecutive home games, they could be mathematically done in the chase to avoid the Spurs by the time an April 4 trip to San Antonio rolls around, which means David Fizdale may just rest everyone. Recommendation: Fade cautiously

Minnesota Timberwolves:
Nuggets fans have to hope that Tom Thibodeau can keep his team engaged since they'll see the Trail Blazers twice over the first week in April. Snapping a six-game losing streak with a comeback win in Indiana on Tuesday was definitely a step in the right direction, but they got the benefit of a huge couple of calls down the stretch and could've very easily dropped another one. Back home Wednesday, they struggled with the Lakers before a sharper second half. They'll close with road games in five of six and have been inconsistent in both their energy level and execution, so you'll have to take this group's temperature daily. Their defense has largely disappeared, but Thibs has proven able to get that to change for stretches. Recommendation: Fade cautiously

New Orleans Pelicans:
DeMarcus Cousins returned to the mix on Wednesday and looking forward to go out against his young former teammates with Sacramento in town to close March. There's basically no room for error as far as the playoffs go, but they do face Denver twice and end the season in Portland. Crazier things have happened but probably won't here. Obviously, New Orleans can still play spoiler due to its talent with Anthony Davis putting up video-game numbers. Solomon Hill and the recently acquired Jordan Crawford have been productive, so there are going to be nights where this team puts it together and inspires confidence that next season could be really fun. The Pels close with consecutive back-to-backs, albeit over the course of six nights. Recommendation: Ride cautiously

Oklahoma City Thunder: Rallying from 21 points down to win at Orlando on Wednesday prevented a loss as a road favorite for the second consecutive contest as Westbrook came to the rescue with the highest-scoring triple-double in NBA history. He'll win MVP if he earns it down the stretch, but that's no gimme. Despite his nightly heroics, he puts his team in positions where they're often stuck watching him work, so he'll have to better balance keeping them engaged and motivated with taking over. After a March 31 home date with the Spurs, the Hornets and Bucks come through town prior to a crucial four-game road trip that will determine how high they can climb, and whether Westbrook will ultimately end up getting the nod over Harden. He looks like he'll average a triple-double. Leading OKC to a top-five finish in the West would be quite the accomplishment given some of its injuries this season. There will be a pair of back-to-backs to fight through, but worrying about Westbrook running out of gas is wasted energy since that seems to impossible. The Thunder have won eight of 10 thanks to comeback wins over the Mavs and Magic, so maybe they'll continue finding ways to win. Recommendation: Ride cautiously

Phoenix Suns:
Devin Booker isn't the only reason to watch this group, just the best one. Rookie point guard Tyler Ulis, dunk contest participant Derrick Jones, Jr. and a young frontcourt featuring TJ Warren, rookie Marquese Chriss, Alan Williams and center Alex Len will all get significant minutes, so expect the losing they've been doing to continue. Returning home from a six-game road trip to close with five of seven at home, Phoenix will still give fans reasons to pay attention while continuing to pad the ping-pong balls. The Suns may lose most or even all of their games, but if Booker can return from his ankle injury to give the young core an anchor, expect a few covers and potentially even an upset. Recommendation: Fade cautiously

Portland Trail Blazers: After winning Thursday's home date against the Rockets, the Blazers have emerged as the most successful team in the NBA in March. April could be just as lucrative as they try to finish out the regular season with a flourish to hang on to the No. 8 seed that they've successfully wrestled away from Denver. Five of the final seven games in the closing month will come at home, although there wil be a road back-to-back to deal with at Minnesota and Utah. They've gotten Evan Turner back from what was once thought to be a season-ending injury and have seen midseason acquisition Jusuf Nurkic become a force in the post, creating more breathing room for Dame Lillard and CJ McCollum to work. Portland is definitely rising to the occasion when it matters most. Recommendation: Ride

Sacramento Kings: The Kings are going to be playing the kids as often as possible from now on, so there will certainly be growing pains as guys gel. Willie Cauley-Stein and Skal Labissiere are going to play more with Kosta Koufos getting nights off. Another rookie big man, Giorgios Papagiannis, will get a longer look. Ben McLemore and Buddy Hield will get up shots. They might be able to sneak up on a team or two and do square off with the Lakers and Suns, but this group will be hard-pressed to avoid 50 losses for the seventh time in nine seasons. The under could be a consistent winner if continuity on the offensive end is hard to come by. Recommendation: Fade

San Antonio Spurs: It's nice to see this group whole and playing well with this little time left to kill before the fun begins, but the Warriors taking their defense apart in the second half of Wednesday's loss is a concern set to linger for the duration of their run this season. Elite offensive teams like the ones they'll have to get through will be able to take advantage of LaMarcus Aldridge, Pau Gasol and David Lee on the defensive end by making them move their feet. Gregg Popovich still has time to figure out matchups and rotations, so by no means should you write this group off, but they're not going to earn the West's No. 1 seed since Golden State padded its cushion. That means Pop can do some tinkering and rest guys in what will be two back-to-backs in a four-games-in-five-nights situation from April 4-8. The Spurs won't have to leave the state, but guys will take nights off. They won't lose their grip on the Southwest or the No. 2 seed, but there's no way to count on them going all out the rest of the way. Recommendation: Fade cautiously

Utah Jazz:
The Jazz haven't won the Northwest since 2008, hadn't qualified for the postseason since '12 and haven't won a playoff game since 2010. That's why it wasn't a good sign to hear Rudy Gobert sniping about his team not competing like they should and some guys on the team being only concerned with scoring. Derrick Favors has been injured for much of the season due to a knee issue, so the Jazz are already without one of their key difference makers. Point guard George Hill has the most playoff experience due to his history with the Spurs and Pacers, but he's also been dealing with nagging injuries. Gordon Hayward escaped a major injury when a thigh contusion didn't wind up becoming the big deal it could've been, but defeating the DeMarcus Cousins-less Pelicans and the Sacramento Kids feels like a band-aid. We'll see how this group truly responds in games against the Wizards, a pair of home-and-homes with Portland and San Antonio and an April 10 trip into Oakland to face the Warriors. The Northwest isn't Utah's just yet. Recommendation: Fade

East April Forecast
March 31, 2017

Lots of agendas drive the final weeks of the regular season. Some teams have long resided in their tanks since coming out of the All-Star break while others are ramping up for when most eyes really start watching. Here are some notes to help determine who to ride or fade as playoff berths, seeds and draft lottery odds are all decided between now and April 12.

Atlanta Hawks: The Hawks lost seven consecutive games between March 13-26, a run snapped Tuesday by a win over the only team on a longer losing streak. Considering Phoenix led 78-71 with just over seven minutes left before Atlanta went on a 17-1 run to pull out the win, it's hard to call the slump over. It marked the team's first win in nine games this season without Paul Millsap, who remains out indefinitely with a knee injury that may remain an issue the rest of the way. Kent Bazemore and Thabo Sefolosha have also missed time, which has afforded more opportunities for Ersan Ilyasova and rookie Taurean Prince. Dennis Schroder broke out for 27 points and nine assists, and for better or worse, the Hawks will be his team going forward.

Atlanta shot it terribly throughout its slide, so even holding on to a playoff berth isn't guaranteed. The schedule has been a blessing since they followed up beating the lowly Suns with a win in Philadelphia. Chicago and Brooklyn are up next on the road. They'll have three days off in between returning from New York before playing Boston on April 6, so maybe Millsap will be able to get himself back up to speed for their one last push. A home-and-home awaits against Cleveland and the season closes at fellow playoff hopeful Indiana, so this group could be in for a crash-and-burn if they don't build off what may end up being looked at a season-saving run against Phoenix. Recommendation: Fade

Boston Celtics:
A four-game run ended in Wednesday night's home loss to Milwaukee, but the Celtics sit atop the Eastern Conference for the first time in six years and look like a smart bet to hold on to the slight lead given Cleveland's slide. They'll look for revenge against the Bucks on the final night of the regular season and will also see Orlando, Cleveland and Charlotte come through town. Their road games come against the Knicks, Hawks and Hornets, teams that they're 6-2 against SU/ATS. Boston is finally healthy and has struck the right tempo, making it the favorite to force the East playoffs, at least on paper, to come through TD Garden. Recommendation: Ride

Brooklyn Nets: With Jeremy Lin back with fresher legs than most and Brook Lopez giving him plenty of room to work thanks to his ability to draw defenders away from the paint, it looks like the Nets won't go quietly so long as no one gets injured again. Forwards Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Caris LeVert are playing hard and backup scoring guard Sean Kilpatrick should be a factor off the bench in April now that he's back in the lineup. Backup guard Spencer Dinwiddie has had his moments too. Since Feb. 25, Brooklyn has gone 12-6 against the spread, consistently outperforming expectations despite Lin being in and out of the mix. They'll close the season playing five of eight on the road, but only two of their remaining opponents have a winning record. They're the Nets, so they'll be getting points most nights too. Recommendation: Ride more than fade

Charlotte Hornets:
The bottom seemed to fall out for this group on Tuesday night. With Milwaukee in town for a crucial game, they didn't bother to defend with any intensity early, fell behind immediately and displayed no "care factor" against the Bucks. It was a must-win they lost badly, which made its bounce-back in Toronto against a Raptors team that has been stifling teams for weeks impressive. The Hornets shown some fight with wins in five of seven, but the schedule will certainly test their fortitude. If they fall in Oklahoma City and Washington, games where they'll definitely be underdogs, they'll enter the final few games a disappointed group with nothing to play for. Recommendation: Fade cautiously

Chicago Bulls: There's been a hint of a resurrection after they dropped a seventh game in eight contests after finding out Dwyane Wade was done for the rest of the regular season. They covered that first night in a loss in Washington, won outright in a home upset of Utah the next on the second of a back-to-back and have demonstrated a steady pulse since. Jimmy Butler has started concentrating on moving the ball and including everyone. Nikola Mirotic is shooting the cover out of it and the schedule really opens the door for them to move back into the East's top eight. The Bulls swept the season series from Cleveland for the first time since LeBron James returned and open April at home against Atlanta, which will be the final team even sniffing around .500 they'll see this season. Although four of Chicago's last six will come on the road, all will come against teams with losing records. Recommendation: Ride cautiously

Cleveland Cavaliers: The Cavs followed an embarrassing effort in San Antonio by failing to avoid a fourth loss of the season at the hands of Chicago. Panic will truly sit in if they're still defending miserably and not shooting straight, but time remains on their side. There will likely only be one situation where Cleveland will be a double-digit favorite in the coming month (April 4 vs. Orlando), so there are no sure things ahead. How important is getting the homecourt advantage to LeBron James? Can Kevin Love regain his groove? Will Kyle Korver ever overcome his pesky foot injury? J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert, x-factors since their arrival, also require finding a rhythm and defensive communication has been non-existent.

There's no reason to lay points like these are the defending champs just yet, but don't write them off as the team to beat in the Eastern Conference either. They may not wind up with the top seed, but that's not a deal-breaker. Avoiding slipping all the way to No. 4 given how hot their three closest competitors have gotten should provide motivation to start kicking it into gear before the regular season ends, but there are back-to-backs to be concerned with too. Remaining healthy for the playoffs will be the primary concern for this group because they know they can turn it on with a full group. Expect the Cavs to remain the Eastern Conference favorite regardless of how low they go since they'll be up for the challenge once the playoffs start, but don't trust them now. Recommendation: Fade

Detroit Pistons: After hoping Reggie Jackson's knees would respond, it's now looking like the team won't be able to count on a revival over the final weeks. Stan Van Gundy sounded resigned to the fact it's probably best to shelve him. The loss at the buzzer against Miami on Tuesday was undeniably deflating since they had come home off a winless four-game road trip and blew a four-point lead in 30 seconds, so beating the Nets at home on Thursday was a must. Same goes for Friday's game in Milwaukee. They won't play again until April 5 against the Raptors, beginning a four-game stretch against playoff-bound teams, so they may feel defeated before they even step on the floor for the first time next month. That season finale in Orlando isn't likely to mean anything. Recommendation: Fade

Indiana Pacers: The Pacers began a cruical three-game road trip with a lopsided loss against Marc Gasol-less Memphis, their fourth loss in five games. Stops in Toronto and Cleveland loom. The team announced that Glenn Robinson III will be re-evaluated late next week to determine when he'll return from a calf injury, while Al Jefferson (ankle) likely won't be part of the team's playoff push. Rodney Stuckey (knee) was waived in order to sign Lance Stephenson since Indiana is desperate for immediate help. With a home-and-home against the Raptors sandwiching that visit to the Q to open April, the short-handed Pacers could really dig themselves a hole entering the regular season's final week. Success likely hinges on Monta Ellis and C.J. Miles generating enough offense to balance out Paul George. This group lost six straight entering the All-Star break and has never really recovered. Recommendation: Fade

Miami Heat: Defeating the Pistons on Whiteside's last-second tip allowed the Heat to remain locked in at No. 8 in the Eastern Conference, continuing a remarkable run after falling to 11-30 on Jan. 13. It marked Miami's first one-point win of the season. The team concluded the month with a home-and-home against New York, but they may not be favored in any game in April provided key regulars aren't rested against them. Dion Waiters remains out with an ankle injury likely to sideline him at least a few more games, but the resilient Heat will continue making their unlikely push. It is worth noting that the comeback win in Auburn Hills prevented what would've been the team's first three-game losing streak since this run began, so there's a chance this group of overachievers may have started running out of gas. Every game will be vital, but it sets up for a riveting finish for a Heat team that seemed destined for a high lottery pick entering '17. Recommendation: Fade cautiously

Milwaukee Bucks:
The Bucks fell to 22-29 on the night Jabari Parker tore his ACL, so it's surprising that they climbed three games over .500 with Wednesday's upset win in Boston. Tony Snell and rookie Malcolm Brogdon have thrived at both ends, continuing a trend that has helped them win 13 of 16. Khris Middleton returned and helped ease the burden of losing Parker, who was slumping after a strong early run next to Giannis Antetokounmpo. They're getting Michael Beasley (knee) and John Henson (thumb) back to add depth up front for this final April run, so there are indeed enough pieces to emerge as the East's No. 5 seed. They'll have to continue putting strong work on the road, but it's hard to deny Milwaukee's success has been well-deserved. Recommendation: Ride

New York Knicks:
The Knicks are out of the playoff hunt, but began a final stretch of playing spoiler with a resounding Monday night home win over Detroit, welcoming Carmelo Anthony back from a knee injury. Outside of its season finale against Philadelphia, every one of New York's remaining games will carry playoff implications for the opponent. Six of the final eight will be in Madison Square Garden, but given how vital the 2017 Draft will be to the Knicks' future, it would be smarter to tank to improve the team's lottery chances. They've only got one back-to-back in play, but will be resting Anthony in favor of the kids some. You can't trust a team that knows ping-pong ball combinations are more important than Ws. Recommendation: Fade

Orlando Magic:
It looks like the Magic will lose 50 games for the fourth time in five years unless they finish with a flurry. Although they had won three of four last week for the first time since Dec. 26 last, that run ended with a 131-112 Monday night loss in Toronto. Orlando has just three April home dates to lean on but hasn't been very good there anyway, winning only one more game there than it has claimed on the road. Their lack of a homecourt edge was sadly hammered home when OKC fans serenaded Russell Westbrook with MVP chants down the stretch of Orlando's latest collapse. Despite hoping to win games by locking down defensively, the Magic have surrendered 100 or more points in 46 of the last 53. Recommendation: Fade

Philadelphia 76ers: Dario Saric has likely succeeded in winning Rookie of the Year honors instead of injured teammate Joel Embiid, helping the Sixers match their combined total from each of their past two years. Can they reach 30 wins for the first time since 2013? With another game left against Brooklyn at home, there will be one among the 76ers' final seven in which they'll be favored. Philadelphia is short-handed with Jahlil Okafor still dealing with knee issues, but the remaining group has banded together and promising rookie wing Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot has started asserting himself. Reaching the 30-win mark and potentially finishing ahead of the Knicks for third place in the Atlantic Division should drive this group to at least covering a few more spreads, something Philly has done in nine of 12 entering its March 31 home date against the Cavs. Recommendation: Ride cautiously

Toronto Raptors
: Toronto had matched its season-high with six consecutive wins before stumbling against the Hornets, managing it in an entirely different fashion than its previous run from Nov. 23-Dec.3 that saw a scoring average over 117 points per game. With Cory Joseph haveing replaced the injured Kyle Lowry as the starting point guard, the Raptors have become a dominant defensive group, surrendering 91 or fewer points in four of the six wins. The Raps' schedule is manageable, harboring only one back-to-back. Lowry should be back from wrist surgery at some point prior to the postseason and is already working on his conditioning, while DeMarre Carroll is attempting to overcome a back issue. Even though they'll likely be running fourth in the East entering April, they've got a shot at improving significantly if everything breaks right down the stretch. Recommendation: Ride

Washington Wizards: The Wizards won the Southeast for the first time ever, winning a division title for the first time in 38 years when they clinched on Tuesday night by coming back to win and cover against the Lakers. They'll now set their sights on claiming the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. Realistically, they're likely to fall short of such a lofty goal since six of their final eight come on the road, but if they can pull off an upset against the Jazz to end March or the Warriors to open April, they can close with enough of a push to finish first or second and improve their chances going forward. A 50-win season would be the franchise's first since '79 and appears within reach. Recommendation: Ride

KD: Resting flap targets few players
March 30, 2017

Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant took issue with NBA commissioner Adam Silver's bid to get team owners involved in response to marquee players sitting out games during the regular season.

"The truth about it is, it's only for a couple of players in the league," Durant told ESPN. "They don't care if the 13th man on the bench (rests). It's only for like LeBron (James), Steph (Curry), (James) Harden, Russell (Westbrook). It's only for like five players. So you want a rule just for those five players?"

Silver issued a memo last week to the league's owners, stating that resting marquee players has become "an extremely significant issue for our league."

"Decisions of this kind do not merely implicate issues of player health and team performance on the court; they also can affect fans and business partners, impact our reputation, and damage the perception of our game," Silver stated in the memo. "With so much at stake, it is simply not acceptable for Governors to be uninvolved or to defer decision-making authority on these matters to others in their organizations."

Durant, who is recovering from an MCL sprain and tibial bone bruise, knows all too well that players often need a rest as they battle both injury and mental fatigue.

"Players, if anything, need a mental break sometimes. And sorry, they're human," Durant said. "They go through so much every single day. There are so many obligations off the court that you don't know about ... family. ... It might not be a physical break, it might just be a reset mentally, and I get that.

"And I also get if I was a fan and could afford to get tickets, and I'm circling LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook on my calendar, I would want to see them play live. I would be disappointed as well. I see it from the fans' perspective and the players' perspective. I'm caught right in the middle."

The NBA plans to stretch the regular season over seven more days in 2017-18 to accommodate players. Preseason game schedules were also tightened.

Pacers bring back Lance Stephenson
March 30, 2017

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Indiana Pacers are bringing back Lance Stephenson.

More than two years after the brash 6-foot-5 guard left in free agency, the Pacers re-signed Stephenson on Thursday - just in time to fill a gaping hole as they try to make a final playoff push. Stephenson is scheduled to appear at a news conference in Indianapolis on Friday afternoon and is expected to make his first game appearance Sunday at Cleveland.

''We're very happy to have Lance back as part of our team,'' president of basketball operations Larry Bird said in a statement released by the team. ''We always knew he wanted to come back here, and we feel now is the right time, not only for the rest of this season, but moving forward.''

Terms of the deal were not provided by the team. Stephenson's listed agent, Alberto Ebanks, did not return repeated messages left by The Associated Press.

The Pacers are hoping Stephenson can breathe life back into a team that has faded in recent weeks. With two straight losses, Indiana fell from a tie for the No. 5 spot in the Eastern Conference on Tuesday into the No. 8 position heading into Thursday night. Chicago, with has an easier closing stretch, is just 1 1/2 games behind Indiana.

Bird and the Pacers already know what Stephenson can do.

Indiana took the former Cincinnati star in the second round of the 2010 draft, and he progressed from bench player to starter to routine triple-double threat. In his first four seasons with Indiana, Stephenson averaged 9.1 points and 4.4 rebounds. In the playoffs, he was even better - posting averages of 10.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists as he helped the Pacers make consecutive runs to the Eastern Conference finals.

At times, the edge Stephenson played with created problems.

During the second conference finals run, cameras caught Stephenson blowing into the ear of LeBron James - a move that drew criticism from Bird and others.

After losing the series, Stephenson wrote on Twitter: ''I have much respect for LeBron and the heat. This was a great series they deserve it all love to Heat. Want to say that I'm so proud of my teammates we work so hard all year to get to point, Everything is a learning experience and getting better every year love u guys Pacer nation and thanks to all of our Pacer fans love y'all too.''

Less than two months later, Stephenson bolted in free agency and struggled to find a home.

Over the past two-plus seasons, he played for Charlotte, the Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis, New Orleans and most recently Minnesota. As recently as last month, there was even talk he could join James in Cleveland.

Instead, the Pacers gave Stephenson another chance in a time of need.

Indiana opened a roster spot Wednesday by waiving injured guard Rodney Stuckey. Two other key backups - forward Glenn Robinson III (sore left calf) and center Al Jefferson (sprained left ankle) - are not expected back before next week and Jefferson could be out until the final week of the regular season.

So Bird turned to Stephenson.

''We look forward to having a long relationship with him,'' Bird said, ''because we know what he can bring to our franchise, both on and off the court.''

Pistons G Caldwell-Pope arrested for DUI
March 31, 2017

The Detroit Pistons confirmed a television report that guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving early Wednesday morning in Auburn Hills, Mich.

WDIV in Detroit reported the arrest Thursday night after the Pistons beat the Brooklyn Nets 90-89. The Pistons said they were aware of the incident.

The arrest occurred around 2:50 a.m. Wednesday, when Caldwell-Pope was pulled over driving 45 mph in a 25 mph zone. According to the report, a police officer walked up to the car, smelled alcohol and put Caldwell-Pope through sobriety tests before arresting him.

The police report stated Caldwell-Pope was "very cooperative" and his blood-alcohol content was 0.08, resulting in a ticket for DUI.

Caldwell-Pope scored 12 points in 37 minutes Thursday and is averaging 14.1 points in 71 games this season.

Caldwell-Pope will be a restricted free agent after this season and could face further discipline by the NBA, though any punishment likely would occur next season.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Baseball knowledge for April Fools’ Day………

13) Last time Washington Nationals won 90+ games in consecutive years, they weren’t the Nationals- they were the Montreal Expos and it was 1979-1980. Washington was 95-67 last year.

12) Last year was first time in four years Pittsburgh missed the playoffs; someone has to remind me why the Colorado Rockies fired Clint Hurdle- damn good manager.

11) Atlanta Braves started 9-29 last year, were 37-35 after the All-Star Game; they were 29th in runs scored, 30th (last) in home runs.

10) Braves went all of last season without a lefty pitcher starting a game; that will change quickly this year- they added Jaime Garcia from the Cardinals, who I think will be their #3 starter.

Last lefty pitcher to start a Braves game? Manny Banuelos, in September, 2015.

9) Mets finished 5th in home runs LY, but tied for 25th in runs scored- they were 23rd in on-base %age. New York stole 42 bases; their opponents stole 135 against them.

8) One way for the Tigers to move up in the standings? Do better against Cleveland. Detroit was 4-14 against the Tribe last year- they finished 86-75, eight games behind the Indians.

7) Phoenix Suns started a lineup Thursday night that was younger than most of the college teams that played in the Sweet 16 that night.

6) Giancarlo Stanton has played 123 or fewer games four of last five years; Marlins desperately need him to stay healthy- they were 13th in on-base %age last yer, but 27th in runs scored, and Stanton can produce runs in a hurry.

5) Phillies play in a small ballpark, a bandbox, a hitters’ paradise; how in the name of Mike Schmidt did they finish last in runs scored? Their pitchers were 26th in ERA.

4) Chicago Cubs started six guys age 25 or younger in postseason last year; they’ve added Wade Davis as their new closer. Who plays centerfield is probably their biggest ??? entering this season.

3) St Louis Cardinals were 74-45 LY when they hit a home run, 12-31 when they didn’t.

2) Cincinnati Reds used 52 players last year, 12 of whom were making their major league debuts. Five of those 12 were starting pitchers.

1— In nine years since Barry Bonds retired, Giants have used one different left fielders on Opening Day- they’ve used 25 LF’s overall since then, who combined to knock in 585 runs, least by any team’s left fielders during that time.

CHICAGO (AP) Jimmy Butler scored 33 points and hit two free throws with 2.1 seconds left to lift the Chicago Bulls to a 106-104 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday.

Butler scored the Bulls' final nine points. His free throws gave the Bulls a two-point lead and capped a 15-4 run.

Tim Hardaway Jr. then missed a 3-pointer for Atlanta as time expired, giving the Bulls their third straight win. That put them in a tie with Miami and Indiana for the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. The sixth-place Hawks, who had won two straight after dropping seven in a row, trail Milwaukee by a game.

Rajon Rondo had a season-high 25 points and added 11 rebounds. Denzel Valentine scored 13 points as the Bulls stopped a seven-game losing streak to Atlanta.

Dennis Schroder led the Hawks with 29 points while Hardaway scored 20.

CLIPPERS 115, LAKERS 104

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Blake Griffin scored 36 points, Chris Paul added 29 and the Clippers beat the Lakers, giving coach Doc Rivers his 800th career victory.

J.J. Redick added 19 points for the Clippers, who moved within a game of the idle Jazz for the No. 4 playoff seed in the West. The Clippers have won three in a row and seven of nine.

The series between the Staples Center co-tenants has been dominated by the Clippers of late. They've won 18 of 20 since the start of the 2012-13 season.

Rookie David Nwaba scored 19 points and Brandon Ingram had 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter for the Lakers. They have lost 18 of 20 since the All-Star break. D'Angelo Russell, the team's leading scorer at 15.7 points, had two points on 1-of-9 shooting while missing six 3-point attempts.

TRAIL BLAZERS 130, SUNS 117

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Damian Lillard scored 31 points and Portland continued its late-season push for the playoffs with a sixth straight victory, beating Phoenix.

CJ McCollum added 29 points for Portland, which holds the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Blazers (38-38) led by as many as 25 points and got back to .500 for the first time since they were 12-12 on Dec. 9.

Devin Booker had 31 for the Suns, who lost their 11th straight for the fifth-longest losing streak in franchise history. The Suns were just ahead of the Lakers at the bottom of the Western Conference.

The Blazers were playing their first game without Jusuf Nurkic since announcing that he had a fractured right leg and will miss the rest of the regular season.

NETS 121, MAGIC 111

NEW YORK (AP) - Brook Lopez scored 30 points, Trevor Booker had a season-high 23 and Brooklyn beat Orlando.

Sean Kilpatrick added 15 points for the Nets, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Brooklyn had a season-high 72 points in the paint.

Elfrid Payton had 20 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds for his fifth triple-double of the season for Orlando, which has lost four straight games. Nikola Vucevic had 27 points and 11 rebounds, while Aaron Gordon finished with 22 points and 15 boards.

Brooklyn opened the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 100-89 lead and never looked back.

KINGS 123, TIMBERWOLVES 117

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Buddy Hield tied a career high with 22 points, going 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and Sacramento got 66 points from its bench in a victory over Minnesota.

Reserve point guard Ty Lawson had 21 points and 11 assists. Langston Galloway added 17 points and Aaron Afflalo scored 16 off the bench as the Kings recovered after losing by 28 points a night earlier at New Orleans against former Sacramento star DeMarcus Cousins.

Playing its fifth game in seven nights, Sacramento shot a season-high 56.4 percent to win for the sixth time in 15 games since trading Cousins on Feb. 21.

Andrew Wiggins scored 32 points for Minnesota, which had won five of its previous six homes games. A game after scoring a career-high 33 points, Ricky Rubio had 11 points on just 1-of-10 shooting, and added 13 assists.

Sunday’s six-pack

— If I’m an NFL team interested in drafting Deshaun Watson, I’d want to know why the Clemson QB was in a bar in Alabama. His choice, but I’d just like to know why.

— Bill Self, Tracy McGrady and George McGinnis were among 11 basketball greats elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame Saturday.

— Bruins 5, Florida 2— Boston has a 4-point lead for the last Wild Card spot in the East.

— Clippers 115, Lakers 104— Clippers ran out to a 17-0 lead, then trailed 32-31.

— Portland 130, Phoenix 117— Trailblazers even their record at 38-38.

— At some point, Phil Mickelson paid off a $2M gambling debt. I’d seriously be curious to see how that debt was accumulated; what games over what period of time? I’m a curious guy.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up Final Four Saturday

13) Gonzaga 77, South Carolina 73— Were you not entertained? Not often a team goes on a 16-0 run and loses; Gamecocks fought their hearts out, but their bench was outscored 22-14 and Bulldogs advance to play for their first national title Monday night.

12) North Carolina 77, Oregon 76— Ducks shot under 30% from arc in four of their six losses this year; this 7-26 performance was their worst since November losses to Baylor/Georgetown. Oregon held UNC to 36.2% inside the arc, but couldn’t rebound two missed foul shots when it mattered most, and now their great season is over.

11) Charles Barkley predicted Gonzaga to win Monday night before the second game last night was over. I’m predicting the game will get excellent TV ratings.

10) Other than Kentucky/Duke, is recruiting one/done players a good idea? Here are some recent one/done’s and how their coaches made out:

— Dennis Smith, NC State— Mark Gottfried got fired this year.
— Ben Simmons, LSU— Johnny Jones got fired this year, a year after Simmons left.
— Markelle Fultz, Washington— Lorenzo Romar got fired this year.
— Stephen Zimmerman, UNLV- Dave Rice was fired during the season last year.

9) Former VCU/Alabama coach Anthony Grant is the new coach at Dayton; he had been with the Oklahoma City Thunder as an assistant under Billy Donovan.

8) Quote of the Day, Part II: “Players, if anything, need a mental break sometimes. And sorry, they’re human. They go through so much every single day. There are so many obligations off the court that you don’t know about. … It might not be a physical break, it might just be a reset mentally, and I get that.”
Kevin Durant

This made me want to puke, seriously. The regular season is six months long, playoffs run another 6-7 weeks, for the really good teams. You mean to tell me you need a break from playing three games a week for six months a year, but not for physical reasons, but MENTAL ones?

Good God almighty.

7) The key word in all of that is “obligations”. I’d be curious to know what Durant considers his “obligations” to be, and what makes them so demanding that he needs to take games off.

6) Final Four drew 77,612 fans in the Cardinals’ domed stadium last night. They drew 39,380 in San Francisco for an A’s-Giants exhibition game Thursday night. Sports are popular.

5) If NCAA wanted to, they could have the entire March Madness in Las Vegas, with regional games in UNLV’s arena, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand and T-Mobile Arena. The Final Four could be in the Raiders’ new domed stadium, when it gets built.

4) New Mexico fired basketball coach Craig Neal, which was kind of expected after his point guard son Cullen bolted the Lobos for Ole Miss after last season.

3) Grant Hill is throwing out the first ball at the Diamondbacks’ season opener today. There are three games on the baseball schedule. AmericA’S team (the A’s) open on Monday night.

2) One thing about sitting in a Las Vegas casino and I’ll have a lot more on this tomorrow; this is a very diverse set of bettors here in Las Vegas. You meet all kinds of people, you bond over sports and food and you realize that we’re a lot more alike that some people want to admit.

1— Early line for Monday night’s game: UNC -2, total of 154 (getting bet up as we speak).

Game of the Night – Wizards at Warriors – 8:05 PM EST

Washington (46-30 SU, 39-36-1 ATS) closes out its final extended road trip of the season as the Wizards try to snap a two-game skid at Oracle Arena against Golden State. The Wizards won the first two contests against the Cavaliers and Lakers to wrap up their first division title since 1979. However, Scott Brooks’ team has suffered defeats in the last two games to the Clippers and Jazz as the Wizards try to avoid their first three-game losing streak since mid-November.

The Warriors (62-14 SU, 36-38-2 ATS) are in the midst of their second winning streak of at least 10 games this season after knocking off the Rockets on Friday, 107-98. Golden State’s defense stepped up in the final quarter by limiting Houston to 13 points over the final 12 minutes as the Rockets shot just 37% from the floor. After cashing 11 consecutive UNDERS, the Warriors barely hit the OVER in their massive rally against San Antonio on Wednesday, but got back on the UNDER track Friday as the 232 total was never threatened.

The last time these teams hooked up in D.C. on February 28, Kevin Durant suffered a knee injury in the opening minute of play as the future looked bleak for Golden State. Durant is still sidelined as the Warriors lost that night to the Wizards, 112-108, in spite of erasing a 19-point deficit and taking the lead in the fourth quarter. By the way, Golden State has won 13 of 17 games with Durant not in the lineup, while beating Washington in seven of the nine matchups at Oracle Arena.

Putrid Pacers

Indiana is going backwards at the wrong time as the Pacers have lost five of their last six games. The task doesn’t get easier as Indiana travels to Cleveland to face the Cavaliers. The Pacers have allowed at least 110 points during each contest of a current three-game losing streak, while coming off a 111-100 defeat at Toronto on Friday. Nate McMillan’s team is in a three-way tie with Chicago and Miami at 37-39 for the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference, but the Pacers split with the Bulls and lost the regular season series with the Heat.

The Cavaliers bounced back from a three-game slide by blowing out the 76ers on Friday, 122-105 as 12 ½-point favorites. Cleveland enters Sunday’s action one-half game behind Boston for the top seed in the Eastern Conference, while seeking back-to-back wins for only the second time since late February. Indiana captured the first matchup with Cleveland in November as LeBron James sat out, but the Cavaliers have won each of the past two meetings with the Pacers.

Grounded Rockets

Houston closes out a three-game road swing tonight in Phoenix looking to snap a three-game skid. During this losing streak, the Rockets have lost twice to the Warriors and also fallen to the Blazers, but Mike D’Antoni’s squad is still firmly in the third playoff position in the Western Conference with six games remaining. The Rockets have owned the Suns this season by winning all three matchups by 14 points or more, while all three contests sailed OVER the total.

The Suns are taking the court for the third time in four nights, coming off a 130-117 defeat at Portland on Saturday to suffer their 11th consecutive setback. Phoenix has dropped six consecutive games at Talking Stick Resort Arena, but the Suns have posted a solid 6-1 ATS record in its last seven opportunities as a home underdog.

Bulling Back

Chicago rallied late to stun Atlanta, 106-104 on Saturday to capture its third consecutive victory to remain in the mix for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls travel to the Big Easy to face New Orleans as Chicago has been terrific in the underdog role recently by cashing six straight when receiving points. Since getting blown out at Boston on March 12, the Bulls have covered four consecutive contests away from the United Center.

The Pelicans have cleaned up at home of late by winning six straight games at Smoothie King Center, while coming off a 117-89 blowout of the Kings on Friday as 11-point favorites. In five of the six wins during this home hot streak, New Orleans has won by double-digits, while compiling a 5-1 ATS mark. The Pelicans have dropped five meetings in a row to the Bulls, including a 107-99 setback at Chicago in mid-January.

No Sunday Funday

The Heat have turned into the best story in the NBA this season following an 11-30 start by winning 26 of their last 35 games. Miami is firmly in the playoff hunt in the East in spite of suffering a tough loss to a short-handed New York squad on Friday, 98-94 as 10 ½-point home favorites. The Heat host the Nuggets this evening as Miami has been awful on Sundays this season by failing to win in seven tries on the first day of the week.

Denver continues a five-game road swing after squandering a 12-point third quarter lead in Friday’s 122-114 defeat at Charlotte. Things are slipping away fast for the Nuggets, who are in a 2 ½-game hole to Portland for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with seven games remaining. Denver has failed to beat Miami in the last four matchups, including a 106-98 home loss in late November.

Head-to-Head Trends

-- Philadelphia snapped a 14-game losing streak to Toronto in mid-January as the 76ers battle the Raptors for the final time this season. The Sixers have lost in their last seven visits to the Air Canada Center, while Toronto has covered in its last three home victories as a double-digit favorite against Philadelphia.

-- Atlanta plays with immediate revenge against Brooklyn after the Nets tripped up the Hawks, 92-86 last Sunday. The Hawks own a solid 10-5 SU/ATS record with no rest following Saturday’s loss to the Bulls, while winning two of three meetings with Brooklyn this season. Brooklyn looks to capitalize off Saturday’s victory over Orlando as the Nets seek their first win on no rest in 14 tries this season.

76ers play at Toronto with short bench
April 2, 2017

TORONTO -- Not only will the Philadelphia 76ers be without Robert Covington and Jahlil Okafor when they face the Toronto Raptors on Sunday at the Air Canada Centre, but they will not have them for the rest of the season.

The 76ers, also have six games left in the season, made the announcement before they lost to the Cavaliers in Cleveland, 122-105, on Friday night.

"I think at this stage of the year, it seems like it's the right thing to do," 76ers coach Brett Brown said after the game Friday. "I know they're very disappointed about not being here with the team and (not) being able to see this through, but I think it's borderline zero doubt that this is the right thing to do."

The 76ers (28-48) will complete a stretch of 11 of 14 games on the road when they play the Raptors.

With the latest injuries, the Sixers had only nine players available on Friday. Sergio Rodriguez missed his third straight game because of a strained left hamstring and is scheduled to be re-evaluated Monday.

"It's just unfortunate in like the last 10, 15, 20 games of the year that we really have been undermanned and hadn't had the full roster," 76ers guard Nik Stauskas said.

Covington sustained what was termed a slight tear of the lateral meniscus in his right knee on Tuesday against the Brooklyn Nets. The forward will week a second opinion to see if surgery is required.

As for Okafor, he has missed the four consecutive games and 11 overall this season with a sore right knee. The center has experienced soreness since undergoing surgery for a slight meniscus tear in his knee March 22, 2016.

They joined Joel Embiid (torn meniscus in his left knee), Ben Simmons (fractured right foot) and Jerryd Bayless (torn ligaments in his left wrist) as 76ers with season-ending injuries.

The 76ers intend to sign power forward Alex Poythress, according to The Vertical.

Poythress is 6-8, 235-pounds and was undrafted out of Kentucky last year. He has averaged 18.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.4 blocked shots this season with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League. He was a D-League All-Star.

The Raptors, without point guard Kyle Lowry who is out for the rest of the regular season after wrist surgery, defeated the Indiana Pacers, 111-100, on Friday and have won seven of their last eight games.

The Raptors (46-30) are tied for third in the Eastern Conference with the Washington Wizards, but hold the tiebreaker.

DeMar DeRozan scored 40 points for the Raptors, the seventh time this season that he has scored 40 or more. It also was the 30th time this season that he has scored at least 30 points in a game, matching Vince Carter's club record set in 2000-01.

"Every record is an honor," DeRozan said. "It's big and I don't believe it. I go home and I still don't believe it, so it's great. Maybe after I finish playing I'll look back at it and be amazed."

The Raptors are 14-6 without Lowry and the way DeRozan has played is a big reason for that.

"Put a little bit more thought in the overall game, understanding not just getting myself going but getting everybody else going," DeRozan said when asked about the difference it makes playing without Lowry.

"With Kyle out there, we lean on him for a lot, he's does things for us a lot of times and it makes the game come easier for a lot of us. Without him, I try to do the same as if I was Kyle, and try to think for everybody else, try to get easy things going on both ends."

The Raptors have won two of the three meetings with the 76ers this season. The 76ers won, 94-89, at Philadelphia on Jan. 18 and the Raptors won, 122-95, on Nov. 28 at Toronto and, 123-114, at Philadelphia on Dec. 14.

Hawks can't afford a slip-up versus Nets
April 2, 2017

NEW YORK -- The Atlanta Hawks find themselves in a position where three games separate five teams in the crowded Eastern Conference playoff race.

With six games remaining, the Hawks are 39-37. They are in sixth place, one game behind the surging Milwaukee Bucks and two up on the Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers.

If there are more slip-ups, the situation might become less secure for the Hawks, who visit the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday night.

Atlanta is in this position because of its inconsistencies since opening night. The Hawks began this season 9-2, dropped 14 of 20 and went 22-13 to reach a 37-29 mark on March 11.

Since its 17-point road victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, Atlanta is 2-8 in its last 10 games. One of those defeats was last Sunday's 107-92 home loss to the Nets.

Another occurred Saturday, when the Hawks wasted two 10-point leads early in the fourth quarter and were handed a 106-104 road loss to the Chicago Bulls.

"They hit some tough shots," Atlanta center Dwight Howard said. "That's how they got the win. We should have won that game though. Any game we lose it's hard to take. Tonight, that was a game we definitely should have won. We went up big and we should have capitalized on it."

Atlanta shot 36 percent in the fourth quarter but still led inn the final minute on a pull-up jumper by Dennis Schroder with 35.8 seconds remaining. Then they gave up a layup to Jimmy Butler, Schroder stepped out of bounds, Butler hit two free throws and Tim Hardaway Jr. missed a game-winning 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

Those plays left the Hawks lamenting about poor execution down the stretch.

"We need to execute better in crunch time," Schroder said after scoring 29 points.

"We didn't make enough plays down the stretch that we had to," Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer said.

The Hawks are faltering while All-Star forward Paul Millsap is recovering from a left knee injury. Millsap missed his eighth straight game and is making progress but is unlikely to play Sunday.

Millsap's progress consisted of a pregame workout Saturday and practice Friday. The Hawks could opt to sit him again since they have three days off before hosting the Boston Celtics on Thursday.

"We are being aggressively cautious," Budenholzer said. "We are definitely aware that if the doesn't play then he has three more days. We are not going to do anything to compromise the big picture."

Last Sunday's win in Atlanta is part of a respectable month for the Nets. From Dec. 28 to Feb. 25, Brooklyn lost 27 of 28 games.

Starting with a nine-point victory at Sacramento that snapped a 16-game skid, the Nets are 8-10 in their last 18 games.

"We definitely want to finish the season strong," Brooklyn reserve forward Trevor Booker said. "It'll give us something to build off of over the summer going into next season."

The Nets look to win both ends of a back-to-back set for the first time since March 31-April 1, 2015 after getting a 121-111 home win over the Orlando Magic on Saturday. Brooklyn is 0-13 on the second night of a back-to-back this season and 0-21 on the second night of a back-to-back since Dec. 21, 2015 at Chicago.

Brook Lopez scored 30 points on 12 of 22 shooting Saturday. He is averaging 21.2 points and shooting 48.4 percent in his last 17 games and unlike last season will not be shut down for the final weeks of the season.

The Nets topped 120 points for the 10th time and are 9-1 when doing so. Brooklyn also shot better than 50 percent for the 10th time and is 6-4 when hitting at least half its shots.

The effective performance featured 72 points in the paint and occurred after two disappointing showings down the stretch in close losses to the Philadelphia 76ers and Detroit Pistons.

"It was very important, very big," Lopez said. "We just continually talked about no slippage until the very end of the season but we want to continue to improve and take every opportunity we can to get better as a team."

The Hawks are 9-2 in the last 11 meetings since a 127-110 loss in London on Jan. 16, 2014. In their 110-105 home victory March 8, Schroder scored 31 and Millsap added 24 and in their 117-97 win in Brooklyn on Jan. 10, six players reached double figures.
