NBA roundup: Another Westbrook triple-double
December 5, 2016

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Russell Westbrook collected his fifth consecutive triple-double in leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 101-92 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Westbrook posted 28 points, 17 rebounds, 12 assists and 10 turnovers in his 10th triple-double streak of the season. His streak of five in a row is the longest of his career and the longest in the NBA since Michael Jordan posted seven straight in 1989 with the Chicago Bulls.

Thunder center Enes Kanter recorded 17 points and 10 boards. Victor Oladipo added 15 points for Oklahoma City (13-8).

Anthony Davis led the Pelicans (7-14) with 37 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots. Rookie Buddy Hield broke out of a slump with 16 points, all in the second half. Jrue Holiday and E'Twaun Moore each scored 10 points for New Orleans.

Magic 98, Pistons 92

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Serge Ibaka piled up 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four blocks and three steals, and Orlando ended a seven-game losing streak to Detroit.

Nikola Vucevic supplied 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Magic, who hadn't defeated Detroit since Nov. 17, 2014. Jeff Green added 14 points, five rebounds and three, assists and D.J. Augustin contributed 12 points and three assists for Orlando.

Marcus Morris scored 16 of his team-high 21 points in the first half for the Pistons, who saw their three-game winning streak snapped. Detroit point guard Reggie Jackson had 18 points and four assists in 23 minutes in his season debut. He had been sidelined since training camp with left knee tendinitis. Andre Drummond added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Knicks 106, Kings 98

NEW YORK -- Derrick Rose and Carmelo Anthony scored 20 points apiece to lead New York past Sacramento. Rose hit the 20-point mark for the third time in his past four games.

Brandon Jennings scored a season-high 19 points, and Kristaps Porzingis contributed 15 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Knicks, who are 9-3 at the Garden. Sacramento lost its third straight, all on the road.

DeMarcus Cousins paced the Kings with 36 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots. It marked the 10th time Cousins has poured in at least 30 points this season. He was 14 of 16 from the foul line, and he picked up his league-leading seventh technical foul. Rudy Gay added 22 points and nine rebounds for Sacramento.

Pacers 111, Clippers 102

LOS ANGELES -- Thaddeus Young scored 17 points, and Paul George and Rodney Stuckey contributed 16 apiece, helping Indiana beat Los Angeles.

George, who missed six of the previous seven games with an ankle injury, also collected seven rebounds and five assists. Jeff Teague added 15 points and Monta Ellis chipped in 14 for Indiana, which won for the third time in four games. All five Pacers starters and two reserves reached double figures.

Blake Griffin scored 24 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the Clippers, who fell for the fourth time in six games. Chris Paul had 18 points and 11 assists for Los Angeles, while J.J. Redick scored 15 points on five first-half 3-pointers.

Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday…….

Broncos 20, Jaguars 10— Jaguars have now lost seven games in a row; QB Bortles threw his 11th career pick-6 in this game- he has 10 career wins. Jags are -16 in turnovers their last eight games. First career win for rookie QB Paxton Lynch. AFC South underdogs are 7-13 vs spread, 2-6 at home.

Chiefs 29, Falcons 28— Eric Berry scored 8 points; he had a pick-6 in last 1:00 of first half when score was tied, then scored game-winning two points on a pick-2 in 4th quarter, after Falcons had taken a 28-27 lead. Atlanta also gave up a TD on a 55-yard fake punt. Over is 10-2 in Falcon games this season. Not a good day at all for the Atlanta coaches.

Packers 21, Texas 13— You say Texans should struggle in cold weather, being a dome team and all, but QB Osweiler grew up in Montana; shouldn’t he be used to it? Houston is 1-5 on road, 1-4 as road underdogs, losing away games by 27-18-18-7-8 points- its not the cold, they’re just bad on the road.

Bengals 32, Eagles 14— Philly has now lost seven of last nine games after its 3-0 start; Eagles lost last six road games, are 1-4 as road underdogs this year, losing away games by 1-7-6-5-11-18 points.

As far as rookie QB’s go, here are some W-L records of rookie QB’s:
John Elway 4-6, Troy Aikman 0-11, Eli Manning 1-6, Peyton Manning 3-13, Dan Marino 7-2. Oddly enough, Marino is only one of those five who never won a Super Bowl.

Lions 28, Saints 13— Didn’t see Sean Payton celebrating much on the sidelines today. Detroit is now 8-4, atop NFC North; this was first game all year they didn’t trail in 4th quarter. Lions are 4-1 as road underdogs this year. Last six Detroit games stayed under total.

Bears 26, 49ers 6— On a snowy day in Windy City, 49ers completed 5 of 15 passes for a net of six yards. Bears had six sacks in a game where neither side completed a pass in first quarter, but Chicago wound up 11-18/184 passing. Under is 4-1-1 in Chicago home games.

Patriots 26, Rams 10— My three favorite football movies:
1) Any Given Sunday 2) Invincible 3) Friday Night Lights

It is accurate to say that Sunday afternoon wasn’t a happy one in my living room.

On a happier note, some Christmas trivia: the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in New York City is 94 feet tall and weighs over 30,000 pounds.

Ravens 38, Dolphins 6— Miami’s 6-game win streak was put to an emphatic end- this game was 24-0 at half; Ravens have won four of last five games- they’ve allowed 11.4 pts/game in last five home games.

Raiders 38, Bills 24— Buffalo led 24-9 halfway thru third quarter but got outscored 29-0 from that point on. On their last six drives, Oakland ran 34 plays for 230 yards and four TD’s, with two short TD drives of 38-16 yards. Over is 10-2 in Raider games this season.

Buffalo was -2 in turnovers; teams that were -2 or worse in turnovers are 7-64 in the NFL this season.

Buccaneers 28, Chargers 21— Tampa Bay has won four straight road games for first time ever; they’re 5-1 on road this year, NFC South non-divisional road underdogs are 12-2 vs spread this season, 9-1 on road.

Bucs are tied with Atlanta atop NFC South and would be the #2 Wild Card now; as for San Diego, sounds like they’re moving to the new stadium in LA, which opens in 2019. They need to draft a QB in April, someone who will be in place as a starter when they try to sell tickets in their new location.

Cardinals 31, Redskins 23— Washington’s loss drops them out of the playoff picture, for now; they’re half-game behind the Wild Cards. Arizona was 10-16 on third down, and didn’t turn the ball over; they had turned it over nine times in previous four games. Over is 10-2 in Redskin games this season.

Steelers 24, Giants 14— Pittsburgh won its third straight game, allowing total of 30 points- they’re 4-1 as home favorites this year. Giants had 6-game win streak snapped, in game where Victor Cruz had zero targets. Under is 7-2 in Giants’ last nine games.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Klay Thompson had 60 points, an NBA season high and the most by a Golden State player in more than 42 years, as the Warriors whipped the Indiana Pacers 142-106 on Monday night.

Thompson scored 40 by halftime in just 18-plus minutes. He had a career-best 60 points through three quarters and called it a night, sitting down with 1:22 left in the period as fans jumped to their feet for an extended ovation.

Thompson joined Hall of Famers Wilt Chamberlain, Rick Barry and Joe Fulks as the only Warriors to score 60 points in a game. Barry was the last to do so, going off for 64 on March 26, 1974, against Portland.

Thompson shot 21 for 33 and 8 of 14 on 3-pointers - 15 of 22 with five 3s in the first two quarters - and converted 10 of 11 free throws in 29 minutes.

Kevin Durant added 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Golden State in another display of impressive passing. The Warriors' 15 first-quarter assists matched a club record and they wound up with 45 total - two off the franchise mark they set Nov. 24 against the Lakers.

THUNDER 102, HAWKS 99

ATLANTA (AP) - Russell Westbrook extended his streak of triple-doubles to six games, leading Oklahoma City over skidding Atlanta.

Westbrook scored 32 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out 12 assists, giving him the NBA's longest streak of triple-doubles since Michael Jordan had seven in a row in 1989.

Westbrook's run has sparked a six-game winning streak by the Thunder. He has reached double figures in all three categories in half of the Thunder's 22 games.

By contrast, Jordan had 15 triple-doubles for the entire 1988-89 season.

Despite a poor start shooting, Westbrook already had 15 points and 11 rebounds when he picked up his 10th assist with 6:20 left in the third quarter.

Atlanta rallied down the stretch, but Westbrook closed it out for the Thunder. He finished with 27 second-half points to send the Hawks to their seventh straight loss and 10th defeat in the last 11 games.

It's the longest losing streak for the Hawks since they dropped eight in a row in February 2014.

CAVALIERS 116, RAPTORS 112

TORONTO (AP) - LeBron James scored 34 points and Cleveland overcame an injury to J.R. Smith to snap their three-game losing streak with a victory over Toronto.

Smith injured his left knee in the first quarter after landing on a jump shot and hobbled to the dressing room in considerable pain. He did not return, and the Cavaliers said X-rays taken at the arena were negative and that the guard would return to Cleveland on Tuesday for further examination.

DeMar DeRozan had 31 points and Kyle Lowry added 24 for Toronto, which had its six-game winning streak snapped.

The win was the Cavaliers' third straight this season against the Raptors, the team they beat in last season's Eastern Conference finals. It also prevented Toronto from leapfrogging Cleveland into first place in the conference.

Kevin Love had 28 points and 14 rebounds. Kyrie Irving added 24 points, his career-high 10th straight game with at least 20.

ROCKETS 107, CELTICS 106

HOUSTON (AP) - James Harden scored 37 points and Al Horford missed a shot just before the buzzer, allowing Houston to hold off Boston.

The game was tied before Harden scored five straight points to make it 107-102 with less than a minute remaining. Avery Bradley made a jump shot and Harden received a flagrant 1 foul for elbowing Marcus Smart in the face. Smart made both free throws before Isaiah Thomas missed a layup.

But Houston knocked the ball out of bounds with 5.2 seconds left, giving Boston one last chance. Horford drove into the lane, but his shot rolled off the rim and Harden grabbed it to secure the victory.

Horford had 21 points and Thomas added 20 for the Celtics.

It was the ninth 30-point game this season for Harden, who also had eight assists and seven rebounds.

SPURS 97, BUCKS 96

MILWAUKEE (AP) - LaMarcus Aldridge was credited for the go-ahead basket with 21.2 seconds left after Giannis Antetokounmpo was whistled for goaltending, completing San Antonio's rally from 15 points down against Milwaukee.

The Bucks had one last shot to retake the lead, but Mirza Teletovic missed an open 3-pointer from the right corner with 3.9 seconds left. Aldridge secured the rebound and the Spurs ran out the clock.

San Antonio extended its season-opening road winning streak to 12 games.

Aldridge had 18 points. Kawhi Leonard finished with 22 points and nine boards.

Jabari Parker had 23 points, picking up the slack for much of the fourth quarter for the Bucks with Antetokounmpo on the bench with five fouls. Antetokounmpo finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

TRAIL BLAZERS 112, BULLS 110

CHICAGO (AP) - Damian Lillard had 30 points and seven assists, CJ McCollum scored 24 and Portland beat Chicago for its third consecutive victory.

Allen Crabbe added 17 points for the Trail Blazers, who opened a five-game trip with their fourth win in five games. Maurice Harkless had 11 and Evan Turner finished with 10, providing a nice boost in the fourth quarter.

Dwyane Wade scored 34 points for the Bulls, and Jimmy Butler finished with 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Chicago played without point guard Rajon Rondo, suspended one game for conduct detrimental to the team. There was no public indication from the Bulls on what triggered Rondo's suspension. He is expected to return Tuesday night in Detroit.

GRIZZLIES 110, PELICANS 108, 2OT

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Marc Gasol had 28 points, including a tying 3-pointer with 7 seconds left in regulation, to go with 11 rebounds and 11 assists, and Memphis outlasted New Orleans in double overtime.

Gasol blocked two shots, including one by Terrence Jones that could have given the Pelicans the lead in the final seconds of the first overtime. And the Spaniard's 17-foot jumper with 1:16 left in the second OT wound up being the winning basket.

Troy Daniels hit seven 3s and finished with 29 points for Memphis, including a tying 3 with 15 seconds left in the first overtime.

Anthony Davis had 28 points and 17 rebounds for New Orleans. Langston Galloway hit six 3s and scored a season-high 26 points, but missed a corner 3 that could have won it as the second extra period ended.

Tony Allen had 19 points, 14 rebounds and three steals for the Grizzlies, who have won three straight despite having a handful of regulars injured.

HORNETS 109, MAVERICKS 101

DALLAS (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 19 points, Nicolas Batum had 14 points and 15 rebounds, and Charlotte came back to defeat Dallas.

The Hornets took advantage of a knee injury to Mavericks center Andrew Bogut late in the first quarter to dominate the paint and the boards in rallying from an 11-point, third-quarter deficit.

Marco Belinelli scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half, including the team's first two 3-pointers after the Hornets missed their first 14 from long range. Six Hornets scored in double figures.

Harrison Barnes scored 29 points for Dallas, and Deron Williams had his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 assists.

JAZZ 107, LAKERS 101

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Gordon Hayward scored 23 points and Utah overcame the absence of ill coach Quin Snyder to beat Los Angeles for its sixth win in seven games.

Lou Williams had 38 points, six rebounds and seven assists for the Lakers, who rallied in the fourth quarter and nearly stole a victory despite finishing their eighth loss in 11 games without five injured regulars.

Rodney Hood scored 16 points and hit two difficult shots in the waning minutes to keep the Jazz on track to win their only road game in a nine-game stretch.

Veteran assistant Igor Kokoskov ran the Jazz for Snyder, who fell ill earlier in the day and decided he couldn't coach shortly before game time.

Utah's bus also got stuck in traffic and arrived late at Staples Center.

Two nights after scoring 40 points in Memphis, Williams put together the first back-to-back 30-point games of his 12-year NBA career.

NUGGETS 106, 76ERS 98

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Danilo Gallinari scored 24 points and Will Barton had 22, including a big 3-pointer late, to lead Denver over Philadelphia.

Jamal Murray added 22 points for the Nuggets, who won for the second time in seven games.

Ersan Ilyasova, Sergio Rodriguez and Dario Saric all had 17 points for the 76ers, who culminated a four-game homestand with their seventh straight defeat.

WIZARDS 118, NETS 113

NEW YORK (AP) - John Wall scored 25 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, as Washington rallied to beat Brooklyn.

Bradley Beal and Otto Porter Jr. had 18 points apiece and Markieff Morris added 16 for the Wizards.

Brook Lopez scored 25 and Sean Kilpatrick had 21 for the Nets.

Beal's 3-pointer gave the Wizards a 107-106 lead with 3:27 left, and Wall scored five consecutive points to up the advantage to 112-106.

Brooklyn pulled to 116-113 with 39 seconds left and had a chance to tie. But then Beal stole the ball from Joe Harris, the Nets' 22nd and final turnover of the game.

The Wizards trailed by 16 in the first half and 66-51 at halftime before scoring the first 13 points of the third quarter.

Tuesday’s six-pack

Baseball signings:

— Astros gave Carlos Beltran $16M for one year; they’ve got a really good lineup but who is going to pitch for them?

— Giants signed closer Mark Melancon for four years, $62M.

— Toronto signed utility guy Steve Pearce for $6M or so a year.

— Rich Hill got $48M for three years from the Dodgers

— UConn 52, Syracuse 50— No wins are ugly, but this was not a well-played game.

— St John’s 76, Cal-Northridge 70– Chris Mullein’s Red Storm is 26-46 from the arc in their last two games.

--------------------------

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

13) No one seems to know the whole story but it is difficult to fathom that Cam Newton was suspended for the first series of a game just because he didn’t have a tie on when he was supposed to— there almost has to be more to the story than that, as in the QB challenging the coach’s authority (more than once), and Sunday night, the coach showed who was boss in a very public way.

12) If you care about such things, so far this season, NBA teams playing the second night of a back/back are 39-46 vs spread when facing a team that didn’t play the night before.

11) Until Donald Trump gets sworn into office, the three wealthiest Presidents were: 1) George Washington 2) John Kennedy 3) Andrew Jackson.

10) Seattle Seahawks had 25 undrafted players on their roster Sunday night and only two #1 draft picks- next week it’ll probably be 26 undrafted players, with safety Earl Thomas done for the year with a broken leg.

9) Average clubhead speed for a PGA touring pro golfer: 109 mph. Average clubhead speed for an amateur golfer: 81 mph

8) You could have a bought a ticket to the Colts-Jets game Monday night for as little as $6 online. Parking probably cost five times that.

7) In 1972, Lafayette College had a freshman QB who was pretty good, but quit football to concentrate on his baseball career. You may have heard of him; Joe Maddon, now the world champion Cubs’ manager.

6) Players in the All-Star Game will be playing the game for $20,000 per man to the winning side, zero to the losing side. Will that be enough to make all of ‘em stick around to the end?

5) Eastern Washington’s basketball team is 6-2 with five straight wins; three of their last four wins came in overtime, with two of those three in double OT.

4) Purdue hired Western Kentucky football coach Jeff Brohm, who favors a wide-open offense. Purdue is a tough place to win in football; maybe he should’ve waited for a better job (Oregon)?

3) This is what college basketball was like before the shot clock; on December 22, 1969, Pete Maravich was 30-31 from the foul line. In one game. With no shot clock, great ball handlers dominated the game as soon as their team got the lead in the second half.

There was a Duke-North Carolina game a few years before the shot clock came in that was 7-0 at halftime. A basketball game was 7-0 at halftime. No bueno.

2) Letting quarterbacks sit and watch ain’t all bad; in his rookie year in the NFL, Tom Brady threw three passes. Three.

1— Two quick Los Angeles Ram notes:

a) When Case Keenum was QB this season, they converted 37.6% of their third down plays, not bad; in three games with Jared Goff under center, LA is 5-35 (14.3%) on third down. Of course, it would be nice if Goff’s receivers would catch the ball now and then; his first INT in Foxboro was a perfect pass that hit Lance Kendricks right in the hands but was tipped to a Patriot defender.

b) Rams’ senior executive Kevin Demoff is the son of agent Marvin Demoff. One of Marvin Demoff’s clients is Jeff Fisher. Oy.
