Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Some over/under win totals for college football this coming fall:

— Texas 7.5, under -$120

— UCLA 6, over -$135

— Nebraska 6, over -$125

— Michigan State 6.5, under -$130

— USC 9.5, over -$135

— LSU 9, over -$120

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a fun weekend…….

13) Had an excellent time Sunday night at the Upstate New York Basketball Hall of Fame induction dinner in Troy; my friend Rob got inducted- he was a great player at U of Albany and also won a gold medal in the 1980 Empire State Games, when he was a teammate of Mavericks’ coach Rick Carlisle- their team played small ball and beat teams with more famous players.

Carlisle, former NBA coach Kevin O’Neill and former Marquette coach Mike Deane all spoke at the dinner. Albany Great Danes’ coach Will Brown was also inducted into the Hall of Fame. All in all, an excellent evening.

12) Odd Sunday in baseball; 30 of 32 starting pitchers got decisions in their games. None of the 16 games played saw the game-winning run score after the 6th inning. Very unusual day.

11) Over is 14-1 in last fifteen games played at Wrigley Field; wind was blowing straight in on Friday and the game still went over the total.

10) Friday night, the Dodgers’ Corey Seager swung at a 3-0 pitch while LA led 5-0, which for some reason ticked off Miami manager Don Mattingly. Soon after that, the Marlins drilled Brett Eibner with a pitch, so then the Dodgers threw a ball behind Giancarlo Stanton.

Stanton got hit in the face with a pitch a couple years ago in Milwaukee and still wears an extra face guard, so Mattingly endangered his best player’s health because an opponent swung at a 3-0 pitch in a 5-0 game. Brilliant!!!

9) Movie recommendation: Wizard of Lies on HBO, with Robert DeNiro playing Bernie Madoff, the Ponzi scheme huckster who bilked a lot of people out of billions of dollars. It isn’t a pleasant movie or at all uplifting, but it is really well done.

8) Indiana Tech, a college in Fort Wayne, is offering scholarships to video gamers who play League of Legends and Hearthstone. This is a world I know nothing about, but apparently it is a growing industry. Go figure.

Too bad they didn’t offer Pac-Man scholarships back in the day; could’ve saved some money.

7) Astros catcher Brian McCann (concussion) goes on 7-day DL. Dodgers sent Julio Urias down to AAA, called Josh Ravin up for some bullpen depth.

6) Brewers-Cubs game was rained out very early Saturday morning, but then it didn’t rain in the afternoon, so the game could/should have been played. It was the Cubs’ decision and the Milwaukee people didn’t see too happy about it; they also seemed a little mystified as to why.

Milwaukee called up pitcher Tyler Cravy from AAA Saturday; the game got rained out, then Ryan Braun got activated off the DL and Cravy was sent back to Colorado Springs. No bueno.

5) Jose Reyes got his 2,000th hit Saturday night; 1,398 of them have come with the Mets. He sat out Sunday’s game with a “tweaked rib cage”.

4) Looks like Kawhi Leonard will sit out tonight’s Game 4 of Spurs-Warriors series, meaning we won’t see him play until next fall, since Golden State will end this series tonite.

David Lee has a partially torn patella; been a rough couple weeks for the Spurs.

3) In the last 24 days, utility infielder Chase d’Arnaud has gone from the Braves to the Red Sox to the Padres, who need all the major leaguers they can get. He was a 1.000 hitter for Boston (1-1 with two runs scored in two games).

2) Celtics 111, Cavaliers 108— Cleveland led by 21 points against a Boston team playing without star Isaiah Thomas, but Celtics rallied and pulled a huge upset. Good for the Celtics, good for Brad Stevens, great for the NBA, which desperately needs some competitive playoff games.

1) What would happen if American Idol had one season where all the contestants were 50+ years old? I think it would be a big hit. Would be a gamble, but in my opinion, a winning one.

Monday's Western Conference finals Game 4 betting preview: Warriors at Spurs

The Warriors are big 11.5-point road favorites to defeat the Spurs in Game 4 and advance to the NBA Finals for the third consecutive season.

Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs (+11.5, 216)

Warriors lead series 3-0

The Golden State Warriors seem to be on a collision course with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals, and the San Antonio Spurs are struggling to get into the fight. The Warriors can close out the Spurs, clinch a third straight trip to the NBA Finals and move to 12-0 in the postseason when they visit San Antonio for Game 4 on Monday.

The Spurs put up a better effort at home in Game 3 than they managed in Game 2, but the absence of Kawhi Leonard left them without a go-to scorer to combat Golden State's runs in the 120-108 setback. "You have to give everything you have for the next one," San Antonio guard Manu Ginobili, who scored 21 points off the bench in Game 3, told reporters. "For us to win, we have to play at a 10 level, and (the Warriors) have to play at a seven. And we have to make them play a seven and play our best game." Golden State played at a 10 for most of the last two games but isn't taking anything for granted against a proud Spurs squad. "Nah, it's not inevitable," Warriors forward Draymond Green told reporters. "We've lost a lead before, so we've got to come out on Monday and try to close this thing out."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

SERIES PRICE:
Off the board.

LINE HISTORY: With Leonord unlikely to play in Game 4, oddsmakers opened the Spurs as hefty 11-point home underdogs and bettors have pushed the line to Spurs +11.5. The total opened at 216.5 and has been bet down slightly to 216.

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "As we learned last night with Cavs-Celtics, sometimes it is wrong to prematurely write off an underdog's chances. But down Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker, the Spurs definitely seem 'up against it' for Game 4. I'm more interested in the total as each of the first three games have gone Over. " - Power Sports.

INJURY REPORT:

Warriors - PG S. Curry (Probable Monday, elbow), SG A. Iguodala (Probable Monday, knee), C Z. Pachulia (Questionable Monday, heel), SF K. Looney (Out indefinitely, hip).

Spurs - SF K. Leonard (Doubtful Monday, ankle), PF D. Lee (Out Monday, knee), PG T. Parker (Out for season, quadricep).

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Kevin Durant took control of Game 3 with 19 of his 33 points in the third quarter and went 11-of-19 from the floor in the contest to mark his fifth straight postseason game shooting 50 percent or better. "The third quarter, I just went out there and played, not worrying about anything," Durant told reporters. "Just played every possession, tried to play hard as I can, and I was able to score." Durant isn't the only Warriors player not having much trouble scoring, as fellow former MVP Stephen Curry is averaging 30 points on 55.6 percent shooting in the first three games of the series.

ABOUT THE SPURS: San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich called it "likely" that Leonard will miss Game 4, and forward David Lee is likely to sit as well after suffering a reported partial tear of his left patella tendon. The shorthanded Spurs will continue to lean on the likes of 39-year-old Ginobili and second-year guard Jonathan Simmons, who is starting in place of Leonard. "The competitiveness was great," Popovich told reporters of his club after Game 3. "Every time you look up, you're playing against four All-Stars, so you better be pretty perfect, and competitiveness-wise, I couldn't ask for anything more. We turned it over too much, and we've got to make some more shots. But it's a helluva team."

TRENDS:

* Warriors are 10-0 in their last 10 road games.
* Spurs are 1-5 ATS in their last six vs. Pacific Division opponents.
* Over is 6-1 in Warriors last seven road games.
* Over is 5-0 in Spurs last five home game

Preview: Warriors (67-15) at Spurs (61-21)
Date: May 22, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

If there is anything that can stop, or even slow, Golden State on the way to its third straight trip to the NBA Finals, it hasn't been found yet by the three teams the Warriors have faced so far in the playoffs.

On Monday, the short-handed San Antonio Spurs, injury-ravaged losers of the first three games of the Western Conference finals, will take one more shot at beating Golden State when the teams square off for Game 4 of their best-of-seven series.

No team in NBA playoff history has come back to win a series after losing the first three games. The chances that the Spurs, with or without injured star forward and erstwhile MVP candidate Kawhi Leonard, can do so are monumental, at best.

Leonard is a near-certainty to miss the contest due to an ankle injury. Fellow Spurs forward David Lee (knee) also could sit out.

The Warriors rolled to a 120-108 win on Saturday behind 33 points from Kevin Durant, 17 of which came consecutively during the third quarter after the Spurs closed within 69-65. Golden State's wave and wave of talented players came alive when the Warriors were needed the most, and -- all the great coaching and proper preparation aside -- San Antonio just couldn't muster a meaningful response.

"For us to win, we have to play at a 10 level and they have to play at a 7," San Antonio guard Manu Ginobili said after the loss in Game 3. "We know it's going to be very tough. We don't know what's going to happen with Kawhi, so we have to be out there, compete, feel good about yourself, give everything you have, and if it's enough, great. If it's not, great, too."

Golden State has now won all 11 games in this postseason -- it swept the Portland Trail Blazers and the Utah Jazz before taking the first three games in the conference finals -- and has garnered victories in 26 of its past 27 overall contests.

"As players, you want to go out there and win as much as possible and play as great as you can," Durant said when asked about the Warriors' domination. "Whatever happens with the score happens. So, we leave that to the fans who feel upset. If you don't like it, don't watch it."

About the only chance the Spurs would seem to have to extend the series past Monday to a Game 5 in Oakland on Wednesday would stem on some level of complacency by Golden State. If Stephen Curry's comments after Game 3 are to be believed, it's more likely that the Warriors will go for the knockout punch and their third straight series sweep in Game 4.

"I'm not surprised that we are up 3-0 -- our goal is to win every game we play," Curry said. "Obviously, sometimes it doesn't happen like that, but we've answered a lot of challenges throughout the course of the playoffs and learned a lot of lessons, obviously through winning.

"But against the Spurs, they challenge you no matter who is out there, and you've got to play well to beat them. So, we obviously know Game 4 is going to be even tougher, with the chance to close it out. They're going to go down swinging, so we have to really come in focused and with a lot of energy to get it done on Monday."

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said Sunday after the team's practice that he does not expect Leonard to play on Monday.

"It wouldn't make much sense," Popovich said. "If (Leonard) was unable to play yesterday, I don't think there's going to be a miraculous healing by tomorrow."

If this is the end of the line for the Spurs, it has been a memorable -- if incomplete -- campaign. San Antonio is a team no opponent can take for granted, so writing off the Spurs is hard, even with these dire circumstances.

"I've been saying this the whole time -- the Spurs are not just going to lay down for us," Warriors acting coach Mike Brown said. "The building is going to be energized. The group is going to be ready to play, so we have to make sure that we come out and we play the right way."

Curry's 36 points leads Warriors to sweep Spurs, 129-115
May 22, 2017

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Stephen Curry scored 36 points and the Golden State Warriors closed out the Western Conference Final against the injury-ravaged San Antonio Spurs with a 129-115 victory Monday night, becoming the first team in league history to start the playoffs 12-0.

Golden State led by as many as 22 points in cruising to its third straight NBA Finals. The Warriors await a possible third straight championship matchup with Cleveland, which leads Boston 2-1 in the East finals.

''It's great to be one of the last two teams standing, we'll see how it goes,'' said Kevin Durant, who had 29 points and 12 rebounds.

San Antonio's only lead came on the opening possession when Manu Ginobili tossed in a left-handed scoop shot. The Spurs started Ginobili in what could be his final game with the team. The 39-year-old had maintained he will not ponder whether to retire or return until after the season.

Unsure if the beloved veteran will return, the crowd serenaded Ginobili with ''Manu, Manu'' chants as the game came to a close.

''An amazing competitor, even more fun playing against him,'' Durant said of Ginobili. ''He was phenomenal this series.''

Kyle Anderson scored 20 points to lead the Spurs, who were without Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker and David Lee. San Antonio didn't go down without a fight despite the injuries.

Anderson dove on the court for a loose ball that the Spurs had tipped away defensively, pushing the ball upcourt to Mills who fed Ginobili for a 3-pointer that pulled San Antonio to 108-94 with 7 minutes remaining.

The effort made Spurs coach Gregg Popovich smile and clap at times, but the Warriors' depth and talent proved too much for short-handed San Antonio.

Golden State shot 56 percent and were 14 for 39 on 3-pointers.

Draymond Green had 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Warriors.

Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge closed out a disappointing series with his second eight-point effort against the Warriors.

Ginobili finished with 15 points in 32 minutes.

TIP-INS

Warriors: Golden State has won five straight games over San Antonio, including the regular season, which is the team's longest against the Spurs. .. Warriors starting center Zaza Pachulia missed his second straight game with a bruised right heel. Pachulia's absence allowed him to escape the ire of the Spurs fans, who blame him for Leonard's absence after his controversial close-out on a 3-pointer that Popovich called ''dangerous'' and ''unsportsmanlike.'' ... Golden State has won six straight road games in the postseason, which is a franchise record.

Spurs: Ginobili had come off the bench in 55 straight playoff games prior to his start in Game 4. ... Murray's four steals in the first half tied Ginobili's franchise record for most steals in a playoff game. ... Ginobili became the 24th player in league history to reach 3,000 career points in the postseason. He now has 3,009 in 15 seasons, having competed in the postseason every year of his career. ... Danny Green has made a 3-pointer in 76 playoff games.

LeBron, Cavs try to shake 'weird' loss
May 22, 2017

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) LeBron James was nowhere to be seen, staying behind the scenes, keeping a low profile.

Just as he did in Game 3.

James did not address the media Monday, hours after one of the worst postseason games of his career, an 11-point, six-turnover, head-scratching atrocity in a 111-108 loss to the Boston Celtics that - for the time being - has made the Eastern Conference finals interesting.

As is always the case with Cleveland's superstar, the poor performance prompted the usual speculation and suspicion: Is he hurt? Was he sending a message to his teammates? What in the name of Red Auerbach happened?

''It was a weird game,'' Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said. ''A weird-feeling game.''

And it was an uncharacteristically passive performance by James, who had scored at least 30 in eight straight playoff games and imposed his will on the overmatched Celtics in the series' first two games.

But James wasn't himself Sunday night, not by a long stretch. He passed up shots and made mental and physical mistakes normally reserved for others.

For a superstar who regularly seizes the biggest moments and makes them his own, it was strange to see James basically look like one of Cleveland's reserves. He took just three shots and didn't attempt a free throw in the fourth quarter.

Incredibly, he went scoreless over the final 16 minutes.

James accepted responsibility afterward, saying simply ''I didn't have it'' during a postgame news conference that was preceded by a run-in with a heckling fan in the hallway.

If James' play wasn't stunning enough, Cavs forward J.R. Smith said his celebrated teammate lacked confidence.

What's that? A three-time champion, four-time MVP, two-time Olympic gold medalist, global icon, billion-dollar-business-in-sneakers, wasn't confident?

''He's got to be aggressive, get downhill, play like he's been playing, play confident,'' Smith said. ''That's what I always think, when people of his stature or people like him, you've got to play confident the whole night and play aggressive. It's the Eastern Conference finals. It's not enough for him. For what he does, what he brings, it's not enough.

''He knows that. We know that. Just expect him to be better in Game 4.''

The series resumes Tuesday night at Quicken Loans Arena before returning to Boston on Thursday for a Game 5 that didn't appear necessary until the Celtics stormed back from 21 down and won when Avery Bradley's 3-pointer danced an Irish jig on the rim before falling with 0.01 seconds left.

It was Boston's first outing since star guard Isaiah Thomas was shut down with a hip injury, and the Celtics showed they're capable counter-punchers.

''You obviously hear people saying that it's all about how you respond, and we don't feel like people believed in us and counted us out,'' Bradley said. ''But that just put another chip on our shoulder, which I think is good. I hope we can continue to play with that chip on our shoulder and come out the same way next game.''

Thomas didn't travel with the club to Cleveland, but he was part of the postgame fun.

''We called him on FaceTime, so he got to celebrate with us a little bit,'' Bradley said. ''We wish he was here with us, and we just want him to get better.''

Boston's comeback was fueled by Thomas' replacement, Marcus Smart, who made 7 of 10 3-pointers and scored 27 points. The Cavs chose to go under screens, giving Smart room to shoot and he burned them badly.

''Marcus Smart made 15 out of 77 off-the-dribble threes this year,'' Lue said, defending his defensive plan on Smart. ''He made some last night.''

As Lue spoke to a large group of reporters and some Cavs players got in extra shots following practice, James was noticeably absent from the floor. Usually, he hangs around to work on his game, but on this day No. 23 wasn't visible.

Lue said James was ''in good spirits'' and that no one was pinning the loss on him.

''No blame. We're all to blame,'' Lue said. ''We lost; it happens. For a guy who played great for five straight months, he's got to have a bad game sooner or later. He's human. He didn't shoot the ball well. It wasn't his ordinary game. But Kevin (Love) and Kyrie (Irving) had it going early and they played well, so it kind of got him out of rhythm a little bit in that first half.

''That's no excuse. They played well, but we've just got to play better, be more physical.''

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Some over/under win totals for college football this coming fall:

— Utah 6.5, over -$120

— Virginia Tech, 9

— Washington, 9.5

— Washington State 7.5, over -$125

— West Virginia 7, over -$120

— Wisconsin 9.5, over -$125

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

13) Apparently there are severe political problems in Venezuela which are stressing out lot of the Venezuelan ballplayers playing in the major leagues here.

Chip Caray said on the Braves game last night there are over 90 players/coaches from Venezuela in professional baseball right now. If a ballplayer here speaks out against what is going on there, it can have severe repercussions for his family back home. Not a good situation.

12) So far, 631 college basketball players have announced the intent to transfer; 271 of them haven’t said where they’re going yet. Thats just about two transfers per Division I team.

11) According to people in Las Vegas who know about such things, when Celtics (+16) won Game 3 in Cleveland Sunday, it was the third biggest upset in ANY NBA game in the last 22 years, coming after a Nuggets (+17) upset of Washington in ’97 and the Lakers’ (+17) upset of Golden State last fall.

10) Gonzaga/Creighton signed to play a home/home series; sounds a made-for-TV deal, which is good for us, the viewing public. Good for Gonzaga’s strength of schedule, too. Creighton plays in the Big East, so their SOS doesn’t need the help.

9) No baseball team has ever started 12-24 or worse and rallied to make the playoffs.

8) Last fall, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gave around 200 policemen in North Little Rock game tickets and transportation to Cowboys’ games in Dallas, as a way of thanking them for their service. Now all that has been ruled an ethics violation, for the cops accepting the gifts. Jones refused reimbursement; seems to me that all this lacks some common sense, but thats just me.

7) Monday was former major league pitcher Tommy John’s 74th birthday; the crafty lefty pitched 2,544 innings AFTER the revolutionary elbow surgery in 1963, that now bears his name.

6) Atlanta Hawks’ Paul Millsap is voiding the last year for his $21.4M contract and will become a free agent this summer. Millsap is 32 but still a highly productive player.

5) Braves 5, Pirates 2— Ender Inciarte had five hits for the Braves, first Atlanta player to do that since Jason Hayward four years ago.

Newly acquired Matt Adams homered for the Braves, making him the first person to homer for two different teams in brand new SunTrust Park— he homered for St Louis there earlier this season.

4) We talked a few days ago about Arizona’s Chris Iannetta getting hit by a pitch in the face, breaking his nose and a couple of teeth. Iannetta came off the 7-day DL Sunday and hit a homer in his first at-bat back, which can’t be an easy thing to do.

3) Warriors 129, Spurs 115— Took Kevin Durant’s advice and watched baseball instead. Golden State now awaits the Cavaliers in the NBA Finals, assuming Cleveland can put away an underdog Celtics team playing without its best player, Isaiah Thomas.

This was the last NBA game for Manu Ginobili, who had a great, great career.

2) Two drivers who will compete in the Indianapolis 500 this weekend were robbed at gunpoint of a drive-thru window at a Taco Bell in Indianapolis Sunday night. The crime was perpetrated by two kids, a 14 and 15-year old, at 9:40 pm. I have no idea what else to say about this.

1) Nashville 6, Anaheim 3— Predators are in the Stanley Cup final for the first time ever.

Tuesday's Eastern Conference Game 4 Betting Preview: Celtics at Cavaliers

Boston Celtics at Cleveland Cavaliers (-14.5, 215.5)

Cavaliers lead series 2-1

The Boston Celtics recorded an improbable victory to get back in the series and now attempt to even it up when they visit the second-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals. The Celtics appeared ready to go down meekly after losing star point guard Isaiah Thomas but instead posted a final-second 111-108 victory on Sunday to trim their deficit to 2-1.

Thomas (hip) is done for the postseason, so it was backcourt mate Avery Bradley taking the big shot and delivering the game-winning 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left to cap a comeback from a 21-point, third-quarter deficit. "We were playing way better. I don't know how to phrase it other than that - we were playing way better," Boston coach Brad Stevens told reporters of the difference between Sunday's win and a 44-point loss in Game 2. "We were getting good shots on offense and playing with great purpose, and on defense I thought we were much better than the score indicated. I think that when you play better, you feel better." The top-seeded Celtics broke the Cavaliers' record-tying 13-game postseason winning streak and limited red-hot forward LeBron James to 11 points, his fourth-lowest output in 210 career playoff games. "I had a tough game, period," James told reporters. "I didn't have it. That's all I've got to say about my performance."

LINE HISTORY: Despite the shocking Game 3 loss, oddsmakers aren't deterred, opening the Cavaliers as 15-point home favorites for Game 4. However, bettors think the Celtics will show up again and the line has already moved down to -14.5. The total hit the board at 216 and has been bet down a half-point to the current number of 215.5.

INJURY REPORT:

Celtics - PF A. Johnson (Questionable Tuesday, shoulder), PG I. Thomas (Out for season, hip).

Cavaliers - No injuries to report.

ABOUT THE CELTICS:
Marcus Smart was a nonfactor by averaging five points on 2-of-11 shooting over the first two games but he stepped up with Thomas out and put on a spectacular performance. The third-year guard was 7-of-10 from 3-point range while producing 27 points and seven assists and putting forth his typical feisty effort that grates on opposing players. "Everybody had to step up their game, especially with one of our brothers down," Smart told reporters. "Our love and support goes out to Isaiah. We wish he could be here but we understand. We just kept fighting. Everybody did their part."

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS:
James was on a tear with eight consecutive 30-points efforts and was averaging 34.3 points before he basically disappeared in the second half by missing eight of nine shots and finishing 4-of-13 from the field. He was testy after Sunday's game and then avoided reporters on Monday to leave his teammates and coach Tyronn Lue to explain his dreadful performance "No blame," Lue told reporters. "We're all to blame. We lost; it happens. For a guy who played great for five straight months, he's got to have a bad game sooner or later. He's human. He didn't shoot the ball well. It wasn't his ordinary game."

TRENDS:

* Cavaliers are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.
* Road team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Cleveland.
* Over is 21-7 in Cavaliers last 28 games following a SU loss.

Game 4 - Celtics at Cavaliers
May 23, 2017

Eastern Conference Finals - Game 4 (Cavaliers lead 2-1)
Boston at Cleveland (TNT, 8:30 p.m. ET)

Down 2-0 in the Eastern Conference finals and trailing by 21 points in the third quarter of Game 3 on Sunday night at Quicken Loans Arena, Boston (62-36 straight up, 50-46-2 against the spread) reminded sports fans of why we play the games. Even with its best player Isaiah Thomas back in Beantown and ruled out for the rest of the playoffs with a hip injury, Brad Stevens’s squad pulled off one of the biggest stunners in recent NBA postseason history by rallying to capture a 111-108 win over Cleveland.

With the score knotted at 108-108 after Kyrie Irving pulled the Cavs even with a brilliant left-handed layup in traffic with 10.7 seconds remaining, Avery Bradley knocked down the game-winning 3-pointer after he was left wide open on the left wing. Al Horford set a great screen on Tristan Thompson, who tried to help after J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert got confused on a switch and both went with Jae Crowder as he sliced to the basket.

Bradley’s shot left his hand with 2.8 seconds remaining. If he gets nothing by nylon, Cleveland would’ve burned its timeout and had the ball at halfcourt with a chance to tie with one second and change remaining. However, Bradley’s game-winner gave true definition to Tim Brando’s signature phrase, “the iron was kind.” His shot hit the rim four different times, burning clock in the process, before falling in with 0.1 seconds left. In this scenario with less than 0.3 ticks remaining, you only have time for a tip so the Cavs didn’t even use their final timeout.

Boston won outright as a 16.5-point underdog, hooking up money-line supporters with a remarkable 18/1 payout (paid $1,800 on $100 wagers). The 219 combined points slipped ‘over’ the 215.5-point total on Irving’s late score.

Marcus Smart was the catalyst for the Celtics, scoring a career-high 27 points thanks to 7-of-10 shooting from 3-point range. Smart added five rebounds, two steals, one block and seven assists compared to only two turnovers. Bradley contributed 20 points, three boards, two steals and four assists without a turnover, and Crowder had 14 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Al Horford finished with 16 points and six assists compared to merely one turnover, while Kelly Olynyk produced 15 points, three boards and two assists without a turnover. Jonas Jerebko took advantage of every second of his 12 minutes and 32 seconds spent on the floor. He had a team-high +22 plus-minus ranking, 10 points, five rebounds and one assist without a turnover. Jerebko hit all four of his shots, including both 3-point launches.

Smart’s 3-pointer with 5:43 remaining pulled Boston even at 95-95. Following a Cleveland timeout, J.R. Smith put the Cavs back up with a trey. But Olynyk put the Celtics into the lead with back-to-back buckets off of assists from Horford. Down 101-99, Smart kept a possession alive with consecutive offensive rebounds that resulted in Horford draining a 3-ball for a one-point advantage with 3:03 left.

After the lead changed hands twice, Horford’s drive for an easy bucket put Boston in front, 106-103, with 45 ticks remaining. Next, Smith responded with a trying triple at the 36-second mark. Then after great ball movement, Jerebko knocked down a 22-footer for a two-point lead with 30 seconds left.

Lebron James missed all four of his 3-pointers and made only 4-of-13 attempts from the field. He finished with 11 points, six assists, six rebounds and six turnovers. When James has been held to 15 points or fewer in his postseason career, his teams have lost 10 of 11 times.

Irving had a game-high 29 points and seven assists. He hit 10-of-15 FGAs and buried 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Kevin Love scored 28 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots. Thompson finished with 18 points and 13 boards, while Smith contributed 13 points and eight rebounds.

Cleveland won the rebounding battle by a 46-38 margin and went to the free-throw line three times as often as Boston (36 FTAs compared to 12). Nevertheless, Boston pulled out the win thanks to 18-of-40 shooting from downtown (45.0%) and more steals than turnovers (10-9). The Cavs coughed up 15 turnovers.

Boston will attempt to repeat its same formula used in the Chicago series in Round 1 when it goes for a Game 4 win Tuesday night at Cleveland. This time around, however, Thomas won’t be around to help like he did when the C’s won four in a row over the Bulls after dropping the first two games of the best-of-seven set. Through 15 playoff games, Thomas averaged 23.3 points, 6.7 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game.

As of early Monday night, most betting shops had Cleveland (61-32 SU, 43-46-4 ATS) installed as a 15-point favorite with the total in the 215-216 range. Bettors could take the Celtics to win outright for a 14/1 return at The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas (risk $100 to win $1,400).

For first-quarter wagers, the Cavs were favored by seven points at most spots. The total was 53. They were 10.5-point home ‘chalk’ for first-half bets, while the total was 104.

VegasInsider.com NBA analyst Chris David offered his thoughts on the total for Tuesday: “Along with everybody else, I was stunned that Cleveland lost Sunday but I wasn’t surprised that its offense cooled off after great performances in Boston. The Cavaliers have been clicking on all cylinders in this year’s playoffs but for whatever reason, Boston’s defense has been better on the road in the postseason and it made the necessary stops in the comeback,” said David.

He continued, “I also believe Cleveland helped the cause with its poor shot selection. Everybody has been chucking more in the playoffs but Sunday’s stat line was ridiculous as 55 percent of their field goal attempts (70) were from 3-point land (39). Even though the Cavaliers have plenty of shooters, they learned the hard way in Game 3 and tried to play keep-up with the Celtics, who were on fire from distance in the win. To put things in perspective, Cleveland was 2-of-17 from 3-point land in the second half after hitting 14-of-22 (63%) from downtown in the first 24 minutes.”

“From a betting perspective, I leaned to Cleveland’s team total ‘under’ (115) in Game 3 and Tuesday’snumber is in the same neighborhood. I would press that wager one more time and I would lean to the game total ‘under’ as well. The Celtics aren’t going to hit 18 triples again and I also don’t believe Cleveland will be screwing around with a double-digit lead. Once the Cavaliers get up, they’ll bleed the clock and prepare for Game 5 in Boston and end this series before they lose more valuable days of rest.”

The ‘over’ is 2-1 in this series so far. All three totals have been at stake on the last possessions of the final minute.

The ‘over’ is 10-6 overall for Boston in the postseason, but the ‘under’ is 5-2 in its seven road assignments. The Celtics have won four of seven road playoff games outright, going 5-2 versus the number.

The ‘over’ has cashed at an 8-3 overall clip for the Cavs in the playoffs, hitting in all five of their home games. They are 4-1 SU and 2-3 ATS at home in the postseason.

As VI’s Kevin Rogers points out here, Cleveland was in this same scenario (up 2-1) against Toronto during last season Eastern Conference finals: “The Celtics have been the epitome of inconsistency in the playoffs by losing the first two games to Chicago in the opening round before winning four straight. Boston failed to win a road game in the second round against Washington, but still advanced. Now, the Celtics erased a 21-point deficit in Game 3 without their best player to extend the series back to TD Garden.

“Since 2010, LeBron James-led teams are 16-4 prior to the NBA Finals off a loss, but there is one nugget to focus on heading into Game 4. In this stretch, James’ squads are 1-2 SU/ATS in Game 4 of a playoff series after losing Game 3 when jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Last season, the Cavaliers lost to the Raptors in both Games 3 and 4 in Toronto after blowouts the first two games. The only win in this situation actually came in overtime at Boston in the 2011 semifinals with Miami as a slight one-point favorite.”

Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Eastern on TNT.

Warriors ready for third straight Finals
May 23, 2017

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Kevin Durant does not need to be told that Golden State should have a muted celebration after winning the Western Conference Finals.

Durant is fully aware a tough challenge waits for them. It's why Durant signed with the Warriors and why Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green embraced him at the expense of their own stats.

''We have a bigger goal in mind,'' Durant said.

Golden State has a chance to earn their second championship in three years after sweeping the San Antonio Spurs with a 129-115 victory Monday night.

The Warriors became the first team in league history to open the playoffs 12-0, which provides them with a week of rest prior to their third straight finals appearance.

Golden State will host Game 1 of the NBA Finals on June 1 against either Cleveland or Boston. The Cavaliers hold a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals, but Curry alluded the Warriors are expecting a rematch with LeBron James and company.

''We all know, obviously, who we're going to play,'' Curry said. ''We'll be watching the Eastern Conference Finals to see how that unfolds. But it will be easy to start this new chapter and really just lock in on what's in front of us.''

Facing Cleveland will resurrect chatter of Golden State's collapse in last season's finals, which saw the Cavaliers rally from a 3-1 deficit to win the franchise's first championship.

''This year is a totally different year, different group, different journey,'' Curry said.

The biggest difference is the addition of Durant, who left Oklahoma City in the offseason to sign with Golden State.

His presence has given the Warriors a deep and talented roster headlined by four All-Stars in Durant, Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. But Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said to credit talent as the sole reason behind Golden State's current run is disrespectful.

''They're really talented, but that's not everything that describes them,'' Popovich said. ''This is maybe the best defensive team in the league on top of everything. So, they don't just play with talent. They execute at the defensive end of the floor. On offense, no team is more unselfish finding the open man and that sort of thing.''

The Warriors have shown their strength by blasting through the playoffs in the normally rugged West.

Golden State is shooting 50 percent from the field while averaging 118.3 points in 12 playoff games. As good as the offense has been, it's been the Warriors' defense that has been key to their playoff dominance. Golden State held San Antonio, Utah and Portland to 102 points and averaged 9.2 steals per game.

''I think our defensive intensity has been amazing,'' Green said. ''Overall, I think we've done a great job locking in on the defensive side, scrambling around, trying to take away team's No. 1 option. That doesn't necessarily mean the player, just trying to make them go to a second or third option in the set and also trying to cover that. I think we've been doing a great job of that.''

The addition of David West and Matt Barnes has given the Warriors two more defensive-minded players off the bench to go along with Andre Iguodala and JaVale McGee.

Still, Golden State coach Mike Brown knows better execution is critical in the finals.

''We feel like we can play better,'' said Brown, who is filling in on the sideline for an injured Steve Kerr. ''To get to our ultimate goal of winning the whole thing, we've got to be better on both ends of the floor.''

As a 23-year-old playing with the Thunder. Durant learned a heightened effort is needed in the Finals. Oklahoma City celebrated advancing to the 2012 Finals only to be steamrolled by Miami in five games.

Experience has taught Durant that winning the West is no reason to relax or celebrate.

''Yea, it's a little different, definitely. I can't lie,'' Durant said. ''I went when I was 23-years-old, and it felt like the Western Conference Finals was almost like the championship. Just getting to that point, you know how hard it is and how much work you put in to start the season. So, it's a little different now, obviously.

''I feel like we could definitely be better.''

Warriors coach Kerr uncertain for NBA Finals return
May 23, 2017

Steve Kerr's status for the NBA Finals remains an uncertainty.

The third-year Golden State Warriors coach has missed his team's last 10 playoff games as he deals with complications from back surgery two years ago entering the team's third straight Finals appearance.

"Just day-by-day," Kerr told ESPN website The Undefeated of his status on Monday night after the Warriors completed a four-game sweep of the San Antonio Spurs with a 129-115 win in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals.

Kerr, 51, traveled with the team for the final two games of the series in San Antonio for the first time since he took an indefinite leave on April 23. Sources told ESPN that Kerr continues to be in "a significant amount of pain and discomfort" and that he has not made significant progress.

Warriors owner Joe Lacob pledged his support to his friend and coach.

"He is a fantastic coach and a fantastic human being and a great friend," Lacob told ESPN. "I told him the other day, 'I don't even want to talk about or think about anything other than winning this championship. You can contribute in any way you can, and we'll worry about the future in the future.'"

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich called Kerr's health woes a "crap situation."

"He's done a phenomenal job and when you're going through that pain every day and that frustration of not being able to do what you want to do, it's hard to enjoy it at the fullest level," Popovich told reporters before Monday's game. "So I feel bad for him all the time. But I'm hopeful stuff will get figured out."

Golden State awaits the winner of the Eastern Conference Finals series between the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers. The NBA Finals begins June 1 at Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.

Irving, Cavaliers take care of Celtics
May 23, 2017

CLEVELAND (AP) Kyrie Irving gritted his teeth, tightened up his left sneaker and hopped to his feet.

The pain couldn't stop him. The Celtics couldn't either.

Irving took over in the second half and finished with 42 points despite playing on a tender ankle, LeBron James added 34 and the Cleveland Cavaliers moved within one win of an almost inevitable third date in the NBA Finals with Golden State by rallying to beat Boston 112-99 on Tuesday night in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals.

With James in foul trouble, Irving was forced to do more than ever and he delivered, scoring 19 in less than five minutes and 33 in a 19-minute stretch.

''The kid is special,'' James said. ''I was happy to sit back and watch him. He was born for these moments.''

The defending NBA champions, who shot 71 percent in the second half, opened a 3-1 lead in the series and can wrap up their third straight conference title - and a ''three-match'' against the Warriors - with a win in Game 5 on Thursday night in Boston.

But if Games 3 and 4 are any indication, it won't be easy.

Fighting to keep their season alive, the Celtics aren't giving an inch despite playing without All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas, who may need surgery on a hip injury.

The Cavs, meanwhile, wouldn't be on the cusp of the Finals without Irving.

With Cleveland in jeopardy of dropping its second game in a row after James followed an 11-point Game 3 debacle by picking up four first-half fouls, Irving put on a breathtaking one-man show.

Freezing Boston defenders with his dribble and driving to the basket whenever he wanted, Irving made six layups, two 3-pointers and a free throw in a dizzying span of 4:48. He capped his blistering 19-point outburst with a 3 in the final second of the quarter and celebrated at mid-court by pretending to put two pistols back in his holster.

''He saw Bron went out and he wanted to put the team on his shoulders,'' Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said. ''He did that.''

Irving said he was driven by the thought of the Cavs seeing their series lead vanish.

''In the back of my mind, I thought, `They can't tie up the series,''' he said. ''We can't go back to Boston tied 2-2. We needed everything tonight.''

Irving put a scare into the Cavs and their fans when he stepped on Terry Rozier's foot and rolled his ankle. He stayed on the floor for a few moments before sitting up and re-tying his sneaker. Nothing was keeping him out.

''It was one of those games we had to fight through and we had to earn it,'' he said.

Celtics coach Brad Stevens was disappointed with his team's defense on Irving, who was able to spread the floor while surrounded by shooters.

''There's choices,'' Stevens said. ''I'm not sure there are good choices. When he gets going like that, he's tough to stop. The ones we gotta look at are the ones he got at the rim.''

Kevin Love added 17 points and 17 rebounds for the Cavs, now 11-1 in the postseason.

Avery Bradley scored 19 and Jae Crowder 18 for Boston.

ANKLE GRAB

Irving did not show any noticeable limp following the game as he walked down the hallway, stopping to hug and kiss friends and family following his performance.

Irving, who has had a history of injuries, said he's rolled his ankle enough times to know when it's serious.

''My adrenaline is still going,'' he said. ''I'm pretty sure I'll be sore when I get home.''

BOSTON BOUND

Crowder and the Celtics are looking forward to going home and redeeming themselves after the blowout losses in Games 1 and 2.

''I feel like we're humble enough to know we haven't played well at home,'' he said. ''We want to give our home crowd a better outing than we put out the past two games.''

FOUL TROUBLE

Lue paused for several seconds before responding to a question about the third and fourth fouls called on James, who was whistled for barely touching Marcus Smart on a jumper and then was called for a charge.

''They called them,'' he said of the officials. ''We had to do what we had to do.''

TIP-INS

Celtics: Thomas spoke to coach Brad Stevens and told him that he has visited one hip specialist and plans to see more before it's decided if he needs surgery. Thomas initially injured his hip in March and played the final two months of the regular season before aggravating it during the playoffs. ... Stevens started Kelly Olynyk, who had 15 points. ... Before the playoffs began, the Celtics were 22-5 at home since Jan. 1. They're 5-4 in the postseason so far.

Cavaliers: The 42 points were a career playoff-high for Irving, who scored 41 in Game 5 of last year's Finals. ... Cleveland improved to 35-5 against Eastern teams in the playoffs since 2015. ... J.R. Smith and his wife, Jewel, brought their daughter home after more than five months in the hospital following her premature birth. Smith posted photos on his Instagram account of the couple leaving Hillcrest Hospital with their baby in a stroller. ''We Walked In Together We Walked Out Together!!'' Smith wrote. ... Deron Williams played 18 minutes after sustaining a shoulder ''stinger'' in Game 3.

UP NEXT

The Celtics lost Game 2 at home by 44 and the first two games of the series by a combined 57.

Wednesday’s six-pack

Some over/under win totals for college football this coming fall:

— Miami, 8.5, under -$120

— Louisville 9, over -$120

— Kentucky 6, over -$130

— TCU 7, over -$125

— Tennessee 7.5, under -$130

— Texas 7.5, under -$120

*************************************

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

13) Washington Nationals are only current division leader in the major leagues who were in the playoffs last season. Lot of upheaval early this year.

12) Why would you catch a home run at a big league ballgame and throw it back on the field? That bothers me every time I see it; you catch a home run, keep the damn thing or give it to a little kid.

Speaking of home runs, Cincinnati’s Amir Garrett has allowed 10 homers in his last 25.1 IP, which is not good.

11) Nationals 10, Mariners 1— From Justin Havens on Twitter: Seattle’s Christian Bergman is the first big league pitcher since 1950 to allow 14+ hits, 10+ runs in a game, without striking anyone out. Much of the damage against Bergman came during a very steady rain, but still, hard to believe he isn’t on his way back to AAA as you read this.

10) Xavier got great news Tuesday; star guard Trevon Bluiett will be back with the Musketeers this winter; decisions like this turn teams from marginal contenders to top 25 teams, with an outside shot to make the Final Four.

9) Mets 9, Padres 3— For the third time in their last four games, San Diego’s starting pitcher allowed 5+ runs in the first inning. Hell of a job GM AJ Preller is doing— he went to Cornell, so of course he is qualified to run a major league baseball team.

Meanwhile the manager Preller fired in San Diego two years ago, Bud Black, has the Colorado Rockies in first place. Black went to San Diego State.

8) Baseball oddity last night: Michael Conforto is the first Met leadoff hitter EVER to drive in three runs in the first inning of a game.

Conforto homered to lead off the game, then when the Mets batted around, he knocked in two more runs in his next AB.

7) SLS Hotel/Casino was sold this week to the owners of the Grand Sierra in Reno. SLS has the smallest hotel room I’ve ever seen— I was laughing when I first checked in at how small it was, but SLS is a cool place with lot of good food choices. Not much of a sportsbook, though.

6) If you see the Progressive Insurance commercial where the guys are in a man cave watching football, the game on that TV is from the USFL around 30 years ago— Jm Kelly playing for the Houston Gamblers, against the Memphis Showboats (I think it is Memphis).

If companies use NFL highlights for commercials, they have to pay for them. Old USFL footage is apparently free, even though Donald Trump owned one of the teams (NJ Generals).

5) Over the last seven years, Oregon’s basketball team is 33-15 against the spread when getting points in a conference game— Vanderbilt is 27-13-1 over the last four years as an SEC underdog.

4) Since joining the WCC, BYU is 2-11 against the spread in WCC tournament games; 2-6 when a favorite, 0-5 when an underdog.

3) Odd fact of the day: 18% of the world’s milk comes from India, making India the largest supplier of milk/butter in the world. They said it on Pawn Stars; it must be true.

2) Cavaliers 112, Celtics 99— Cleveland leads this series 3-1.

1) Bad news for my right thumb; Odell Beckham Jr got a huge deal with Nike this week, meaning there will be a flood of commercials with the Giants’ WR this season and in coming years, which means increased use of the mute button on my remote and/or simply changing channels.

The Orlando Magic revamped their organization by hiring Jeff Weltman as president of basketball operations and John Hammond as general manager, the club announced Tuesday.

Weltman spent the past four seasons as the right-hand man to Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri. Hammond spent the past nine seasons as general manager of the Milwaukee Bucks.

Weltman served as Milwaukee's assistant general manager under Hammond from 2008-13. The two also previously worked together in the Los Angeles Clippers and Detroit Pistons' organizations.

Orlando's interim general manager Matt Lloyd is expected to remain in the organization. He filled the role after Rob Hennigan was fired in April.

Spurs' Ginobili mulls retirement
May 23, 2017

Manu Ginobili's storied NBA career hangs in limbo after the San Antonio Spurs were swept by the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals on Monday night.

Ginobili, 39, left Monday night's Game 4 with 2:25 remaining in the fourth quarter to a standing ovation from the San Antonio crowd and chants of "Manu! Manu!" and "One more year!"

The four-time NBA champion and two-time All-Star thanked fans for the gesture on his Twitter account Tuesday morning.

"Very hard to find the words to describe my feelings after yesterday's game. Still overwhelmed. Thank you SO very much!," Ginobili tweeted.

Ginobili said he has not yet made up his mind about retirement.

"I'm getting closer and closer (to the end of my playing career)," Ginobili told reporters after the game. "There is no secret, for sure. It's getting harder and harder. But I always said that I wanted to let it sink in for three weeks, four weeks, whatever, and then I will sit with my wife and see how it feels.

The Argentinean has spent his entire 15-year career with the Spurs, averaging 13.6 points on 44.7 percent shooting along with 3.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals in 992 career regular-season games.

This season, Ginobili averaged a career-low 7.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 69 games.

"Whatever I decide to do, I'll be a happy camper," Ginobili said. "I have to choose between two wonderful and truly wonderful options. One is to keep playing in this league at this age, enjoying every day, playing the sport I still love. The other one is to stay at home, be a dad, travel more, enjoy my whole family."

Ginobili, who did not start a game during the regular season and has started only three times over the past five seasons, was in the starting lineup for Game 4 against the Warriors.

He finished with 15 points, seven assists and three steals in San Antonio's 129-115 loss.

"We started him tonight out of respect," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

That was the whole reason for starting him. Before the game you think it may or may not be his last game that he ever plays in, and I did not want to miss the opportunity to honor him in front of our home fans for his selflessness over the years.

Ginobili averaged 13.8 points and 2.8 assists during the four-game series with Golden State, but just 6.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 16 games this postseason.

Kerr uncertain for NBA Finals return
