NBA roundup: Sixers snap 23-game road skid
December 9, 2016

NEW ORLEANS -- Dario Saric scored eight consecutive points in a decisive fourth-quarter surge and Ersan Ilyasova had a team-high 23 points as the Philadelphia 76ers snapped a 23-game road losing streak with a 99-88 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans Thursday night at the Smoothie King Center.

The Sixers (5-18) entered the game with the NBA's worst record, but they placed five players in double figures. Besides Ilyasova, guard Segio Rodriquez had 16, Joel Embiid and Nik Stauskas 14 each, and Saric 13.

The Pelicans (7-16) lost their fourth consecutive game despite Anthony Davis' 26 points and 11 rebounds. Only one other Pelican -- guard Langston Galloway -- scored in double figures with 19 points.

Bulls 95, Spurs 91

CHICAGO -- San Antonio didn't have an answer for why it started 13-0 on the road, and then had no answer for Chicago at the United Center.

The Bulls led start to finish to end a three-game losing streak and hand the Spurs their first road loss. San Antonio needed one more road win to tie the NBA record of 14 straight road victories to start a season, set by the Golden State Warriors last season.

Rajon Rondo led the way for Chicago by finishing an assist short of a triple-double (12 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists). Dwyane Wade finished with 19 points and Jimmy Butler added 13.

Wizards 92, Nuggets 85

WASHINGTON -- Bradley Beal scored 26 points and John Wall had 15 as Washington fended off Denver.

Wall wasn't close to the career-high 52 points he scored in Tuesday's 124-116 home loss to the Orlando Magic, but nine came in the fourth quarter. Denver only had 12 in the final period, including four over the last 10 minutes. Markieff Morris also scored 15 for the Wizards.

Nikola Jokic had 17 points and Danilo Gallinari scored 14 for the Nuggets, who have lost five of six. Denver led by 14 points in the first quarter, but faded over the final three periods. The Wizards outscored the Nuggets 45-33 in the second half one game after allowing the Magic to score their most points on the season.

Raptors 124, Timberwolves 110

TORONTO -- DeMar DeRozan scored 27 points, Kyle Lowry added 25 points and 11 assists and Toronto came back to defeat Minnesota.

Toronto's Jonas Valanciunas added 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Zach LaVine scored 29 points, Anthony Wiggins added 25 and Karl-Anthony Towns recorded 17 points and 11 rebounds for Minnesota.

Grizzlies 88, Trail Blazers 86

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Reserve guard Toney Douglas connected on two free throws with 0.5 seconds remaining to lift Memphis past Portland at FedExForum.

The Grizzlies rallied from a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit to win their fifth straight.

Center Marc Gasol led Memphis with a season-high 36 points and JaMychal Green added a career-high 18 rebounds.

Warriors 106, Jazz 99

SALT LAKE CITY -- Stephen Curry scored 26 points and Kevin Durant added 21, including 11 in fourth quarter, to help Golden State hold off a late rally and beat Utah.

Draymond Green added 13 points for the Warriors while Klay Thompson and Patrick McCaw chipped in 10 apiece. Golden State won its eighth consecutive road game -- the third-longest streak in franchise history.

Joe Ingles scored a career-high 21 points to lead Utah. Rudy Gobert finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds, for his 14th double-double of the season, and Shelvin Mack chipped in 19. It wasn't enough for the Jazz (14-10) to overcome a sluggish first-quarter start.

Friday’s six-pack

Six interesting NFL trends, with Week 14 upon us:

— Cleveland is 1-9 vs spread in its last ten divisional games.

— Rams are 1-5-1 vs spread in their last seven games.

— Falcons are 6-17 in their last 23 games as a favorite.

— Tennessee is 2-8 in its last ten games as a home favorite.

— New Orleans covered its last seven road games.

— Texans are 7-1-1 vs spread in their last nine divisional games.

Friday’s List of 13: Our bottom 5, top 8 in the NFL

32) Browns— 25 people in San Antonio voted for Gregg Popovich for President; when I heard that, i was actually surprised the number was only 25. Wish I had thought of it when I was in the voting booth; Popovich would’ve been a better choice than Gary Johnson.

31) Jaguars— Football coach Willie Taggart was making $1.8M at South Florida, left USF to go to Oregon, where he will make less than Purdue’s Jeff Brohm, who was making $800K at Western Kentucky. Brohm will make $3.3M, Taggart $3.2M.

30) 49ers— Niners are favored this week, for second week in a row. They’re 1-11.

29) Bears— At the Pearl Harbor basketball games this week (Seton Hall-Cal, Princeton-Hawai’i), a 97-year old World War II veteran played the National Anthem on a harmonica and it was tremendous.

28) Rams— If the Chargers move to the LA Coliseum next year, will they put FieldTurf down? Hosting three teams on the same field could be dicey for a natural grass field.

8) Giants— Big ballgame with the Cowboys in Swamp Stadium Sunday night. Giant defense is going to miss the injured Pierre-Paul.

7) Steelers— 13 years later, if you had to rank Eli-Big Ben-Rivers’ careers, who would be 1-2-3? They were all in the same draft.

6) Lions— Will OC Jim Bob Cooter be a head coaching candidate next month? He’s done a great job with Matthew Stafford.

5) Seahawks— Ever see Pawn Stars on the History Channel? I’ve been in that shop in Las Vegas; much smaller than it looks on TV, mostly jewelry there, but a cool place. It is worth a couple hours to look around and see if there is anything worth buying.

4) Chiefs— KC’s defense/special teams have accounted for NFL-high 49.5% of Chiefs’ points this season. By way of comparison:

2015 Broncos: 45.9%…..2000 Ravens: 46.5%…..1985 Bears: 42.1%

3) Raiders— A school district in Texas, the McKinney Independent School District, broke ground this week on a $69M football stadium. For a high school team. Oy.

2) Patriots— RIP John Glenn 95, an Astronaut/US Senator (for 25 years) who lived a great life. He was the first American to orbit the earth, and actually went up in space again in 1998, at age 77. RIP, sir.

1— Cowboys— Some team in the next couple years will draft a QB and throw him in the starting lineup right away in part because of the success Dak Prescott is having. They better have as good an offensive line as Dallas has, or else……..

Friday's Tip Sheet
December 9, 2016

Underdogs cashed in four of six games on Thursday night in the NBA, including outright victories by the Grizzlies, 76ers, and Bulls. Chicago handed San Antonio its first road loss of the season following a 13-0 start on the highway, while Philadelphia pulled off its first away victory in 24 tries at New Orleans. Both Washington and Toronto rallied for home victories, while Golden State held off Utah as 11-point favorites in a seven-point road triumph.

Game of the Night – Rockets (-1, 224) at Thunder – 8:00 PM EST – ESPN

Two of the most dynamic offensive talents in the league meet up in Oklahoma City for an expected shootout. Thunder guard Russell Westbrook has reeled off six consecutive triple-doubles, while leading Oklahoma City (14-8 SU, 12-10 ATS) to six straight wins. In Monday’s 102-99 victory at Atlanta, Westbrook scored 32 points, pulled down 13 rebounds, and dished out 12 assists to pick up his 12th triple-double of the season. The Thunder lost three straight at Chesapeake Energy Arena in mid-November, but have won five of their past six home games, while covering four times.

The second star to keep an eye in Westbrook’s former teammate James Harden, who has helped lead Houston (15-7 SU, 15-7 ATS) to four consecutive victories and second place in the Southwest division behind San Antonio. Harden ranks fourth in the NBA in points per game (28.5), while Westbrook sits in second behind Pelicans’ center Anthony Davis at 31.0 ppg. Both Harden and Westbrook are 1-2 in the NBA in assists per game at a shade over 11 dimes dished out, so it’s hard to call them both ball-hogs.

The Rockets avenged an opening night loss to the Lakers by blasting Los Angeles on Wednesday at Toyota Center, 134-95 to easily cash as 13 ½-point favorites. Seven Rockets scored in double-figures, led by Eric Gordon’s 26 points off the bench, including eight three-pointers. Houston has played nearly twice as many road games as home games (14 to 8), but the Rockets have responded with a 9-5 road mark, including victories at San Antonio and Golden State.

Westbrook and the Thunder held off the Rockets in their first meeting of the season on November 16 in OKC, 105-103. Gordon drilled a meaningless three-pointer at the buzzer to give Houston the cover as 2 ½-point ‘dogs, as the two teams combined for 33 points in the fourth quarter to keep the game UNDER the total of 218. The Rockets have covered seven consecutive matchups with the Thunder, but Houston has lost its last three trips to Oklahoma City.

Last Stop

The Pacers (11-11 SU, 9-13 ATS) are finally healthy following numerous injuries, including forward Paul George missing seven games. George returned to the lineup for Indiana’s 111-102 victory over the Clippers as 11 ½-point underdogs this past Sunday, as the Pacers have won two of their last three contests. The most recent win came at Phoenix on Wednesday night, 109-94 as George scored 25 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. The Pacers have struggled off a win this season, going 2-8 SU/ATS in this situation.

Indiana heads to Dallas (4-17 SU, 8-13 ATS) to wrap up a five-game road swing as the Mavericks own the worst record in the Western Conference. Dallas has dropped two in a row since blowing out Chicago, as the Mavericks look to avenge an opening night overtime loss at Indiana, 130-121 as 5 ½-point road underdogs.

Atlantic Avenue

The top two teams in the Atlantic division meet in Boston as the Celtics host the Raptors. Boston (13-9 SU, 12-10 ATS) will likely be without leading scorer Isaiah Thomas for the second straight game due to a groin injury. The Celtics routed the Magic on Wednesday without Thomas, 117-87 to wrap up their three-game road trip at 2-1. Each of Boston’s last nine victories have come against teams that are currently at .500 or below, as the beat squad record-wise the Celtics have topped this season is the Hornets, who are 13-9.

The Raptors (15-7 SU, 15-6-1 ATS) have won seven of eight games after pulling away from the Timberwolves last night, 124-110 to cash as 9 ½-point favorites. Toronto has also cleaned up against subpar competition as its best win during this hot streak came at Houston on November 23. Out of the seven losses suffered by the Raptors this season, three defeats came to Cleveland, one to the Clippers, and one to Golden State. Toronto has cashed the OVER in all four opportunities with no rest, as the Raptors have scored at least 115 points in all four of those contests.

Something’s Gotta Give

The Suns and Lakers aren’t exactly competing for the Pacific division title as the two squads meet up at Staples Center for the second time this season. The first time around, Los Angeles pulled away from Phoenix on November 6 by a 119-108 count to cash as 3 ½-point home favorites. Both these teams are struggling at the moment as the Lakers have lost four straight, while the Suns have dropped five of six. Phoenix owns a solid 9-4 ATS mark as a single-digit underdog, while L.A. is 3-10-1 ATS in the past 13 games overall.

Head-to-head stats

-- The Hornets captured three of four meetings from the Magic last season as the two Southeast rivals hook up in Charlotte. Since January 2015, Charlotte owns a 5-1 SU record against Orlando, while covering four times.

-- The home team won all three matchups between the Cavaliers and Heat last season with Miami winning twice in South Florida. However, Friday’s contest is at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland as the Cavaliers have beaten the Heat the last three times at home by double-digits since 2015.

-- Milwaukee beat Atlanta two of three times last season, with both victories coming in overtime. The Hawks held off the Bucks in the first matchup this season, as Atlanta limited Milwaukee to nine points in the second quarter of a 107-100 victory.

-- Detroit swept Minnesota in the two-game season series in 2015-16, including a 96-86 triumph at Target Center last November. The Wolves are in a profitable rest spot as Minnesota is 3-1 SU and 4-0 ATS with no rest coming off last night’s loss at Toronto.

-- Sacramento grabbed four straight meetings with New York from 2014-16 before the Knicks beat the Kings at Madison Square Garden, 106-98 this past Sunday. Three of the last four meetings in Sacramento have been won by the Kings, but two of the victories came by two points or less with the other win coming in overtime.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) James Harden scored 21 points, and the Houston Rockets overcame Russell Westbrook's seventh consecutive triple-double to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 102-99 on Friday night.

Harden also had 12 assists and nine rebounds to help the Rockets win their fifth straight. Houston withstood Harden's 6-for-23 shooting effort.

Westbrook finished with 27 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. He has the longest triple-double streak since Michael Jordan had seven straight in 1989. The most in a row is nine by Philadelphia's Wilt Chamberlain in March 1968.

It was Westbrook's 12th triple-double this season and the 49th of his career. He is the NBA's active leader in the category and ranks sixth overall.

The Thunder had won the previous six games during Westbrook's triple-double binge.

CAVALIERS 114, HEAT 84

CLEVELAND (AP) - LeBron James scored 27 points to move into ninth place on the NBA scoring list, and Cleveland routed Miami.

James passed Elvin Hayes on a driving layup with 6:58 remaining and has 27,315 career points. The four-time MVP was removed about a minute later and received a loud ovation from the Cleveland crowd.

Kevin Love, a game-time decision because of back spasms, scored a team-high 28 points and had 15 rebounds for the Cavaliers. He missed the morning shootaround but was in the lineup after warming up on the court about an hour before tip-off.

Kyrie Irving added 23 points for the Cavs. They have won three straight after losing three in a row.

Derrick Williams scored 17 points to lead the short-handed Heat. They have lost four straight.

RAPTORS 101, CELTICS 94

BOSTON (AP) - Kyle Lowry scored 21 of his season-high 34 points in the second half for Toronto.

Toronto erased an eight-point halftime deficit and led by as many as 11 in the fourth quarter. Boston pulled within four in the final minute, but Al Horford fouled Lowry on a 3-point attempt with 30 seconds to play. Lowry made all three free throws to help close out the victory.

DeMar DeRozan added 24 points, and Norman Powell had 20.

Horford and Avery Bradley each had 19 points to lead Boston. Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas sat out his second straight game with a strained right groin.

PISTONS 117, TIMBERWOLVES 90

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Andre Drummond had 22 points and 22 rebounds for his second straight 20-20 game and Detroit cruised past Minnesota.

Marcus Morris had 15 points and seven rebounds and the Pistons had their way with Minnesota's struggling defense, hitting 14 of 29 3-pointers.

Andrew Wiggins scored 16 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolves. They have lost seven of their last eight games.

MAVERICKS 111, PACERS 103

DALLAS (AP) - Wesley Matthews matched a season high with 26 points, Harrison Barnes had 25 and Dallas beat Indiana for just its third win in 15 games.

Two nights after a listless second half in a 31-point home loss to Sacramento prompted a team meeting, the Mavericks started the third quarter with a 10-2 run that gave them a double-digit lead.

Matthews outscored the Pacers by himself during a 32-11 spurt that turned a 50-42 deficit into a 74-61 lead. The shooting guard had 16 points during the run, capped by a 3-pointer.

Paul George had 22 points for the Pacers.

HAWKS 114, BUCKS 110

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Dennis Schroder scored a career-high 33 points and Atlanta rallied from 20 down in the second half to beat Milwaukee.

Paul Millsap added 23 points and 14 rebounds, and Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 18 points. The Hawks ended a seven-game losing streak Wednesday night with a win over Miami.

Jabari Parker scored 27 points for Milwaukee.

HORNETS 109, MAGIC 88

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Nic Batum and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist each had 16 points, and Charlotte routed Orlando for its third straight victory.

Kemba Walker had 15 points in limited action, and Ramon Sessions and Jeremy Lamb each scored 12 off the bench. Batum missed out on a chance at a triple-double because Charlotte's starters didn't play in the fourth quarter with the game out of hand. He had nine rebounds and seven assists.

Evan Fournier had 14 points for Orlando.

SUNS 119, LAKERS 115

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Eric Bledsoe had 30 points and nine assists, Leandro Barbosa added 21 points and Phoenix snapped its three-game losing streak with a victory over slumping Los Angeles.

Devin Booker had 15 points before fouling out for the Suns, who hit a season-high 13 3-pointers and withstood a late rally by the short-handed Lakers.

Lou Williams hit six 3-pointers and scored 35 points in another monster game off the bench for the Lakers, who have lost five straight after a promising start to their first season since Kobe Bryant retired.

Los Angeles has faltered during a busy portion of its December schedule while playing without four injured regulars: D'Angelo Russell, Nick Young, Tarik Black and Jose Calderon.

Alex Len had 14 points and 13 rebounds, but the Suns blew most of an 18-point lead in the second half. Phoenix hung on for just its seventh victory of the season after losing five of its previous six.

KNICKS 103, KINGS 100

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Carmelo Anthony scored 33 points, including two free throws with 14.8 seconds remaining, and New York held on to beat Sacramento for its fifth victory in six games.

Kristaps Porzingis added 17 points and 10 rebounds for New York. Brandon Jennings scored 13 in place of injured Derrick Rose, and the Knicks beat the Kings for the second time in six days.

The Kings missed multiple shots in the waning moments, including an uncontested driving layup by DeMarcus Cousins with 22 seconds left that would have given Sacramento the lead.

Rudy Gay missed a potential tying 3-pointer with 3.9 seconds remaining, and Cousins also missed a desperation heave from beyond midcourt that hit the rim at the buzzer.

Cousins finished with 28 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.

Saturday’s six-pack

— Titans covered twice in last 10 games as a home favorite.

— Seahawks are 13-6 vs spread in their last 19 games.

— Carolina is 4-10-1 vs spread in their last 15 games.

— Lions are 6-1-1 in last 8 games as an NFC North home favorite.

— Surprising fact: the Prime Minister of Japan went to college at USC.

— Hartford 65, Boston College 63— BC is in same league as Duke, UNC, Louisville and they’ve already lost to Nicholls St and Hartford. Yikes.

Saturday’s List of 13: Random thoughts on a cold day

Catching up on some stuff from during the week…….

13) First of all, a football-related weather forecast; supposed to snow heavily in Green Bay all day Sunday; 6-8 inches in all. Could be Packers’ snowiest home game since 1985, so if you’re wagering or have fantasy players in that game, act accordingly.

12) Houston Rockets’ Sam Dekker is a good example of a guy working his butt off to improve his body and therefore his game, making himself a serviceable NBA player. Dekker played in only three games LY, hurt his back; he is averaging 16+ minutes a game this year.

11) College football coaching moves: Willie Taggart goes from South Florida to Oregon, Purdue hires Western Kentucky coach Jeff Brohm and Houston promotes OC Major Applewhite to replace the departed Tom Herman.

10) Taggart was making $1.8M at South Florida, will make $3.2M now. Brohm was making $800K at WKU, will make $3.3M now- interesting. Good luck competing against Harbaugh and Urban Meyer, by the way.

Brohm’s first game at Purdue will be against his old boss Bobby Petrino and Louisville.

9) Gonzaga 98, Washington 71— If you’re coaching in the Pac-12 and one of your better players transfers to Gonzaga, what does it say about your program? Spokane is way out of the way, dangerously close to Idaho, but they win a lot and kids like to win.

What Gonzaga did to Washington in this game was flat embarrassing— Lorenzo Romar’s team has fallen into the trap of recruiting one-and-done kids, meaning his team is always very young but with very little chance to develop team chemistry, since their better guys have at least one eye on the NBA already.

8) Tex-Arlington 66, Saint Mary’s 51— We like Arlington, but were still surprised that this game wasn’t close at all. UTA was quicker all over the court and dominated the game. In no way did the Gaels look like a top 15 team.

7) Iowa 78, Iowa State 64— People get impatient with me for not picking games in pre-conference play anymore, and I point to games like this, scores that make zero sense. Iowa isn’t a good team; Cyclones are one of the most experienced teams in America and they got waxed in this game, against an in-state rival. Go figure.

6) If Chiefs’ speedster Tyreek Hill played for the Giants, Showtime would’ve already done one (or more) movies about him and he’d have 6-7 commercials on TV every day. He’s very good and still underrated.

5) Louisiana Tech’s football team is 8-5; in only two of their 13 games was the Las Vegas pointspread single digits- Tech was favored by 10+ points eight times, an underdog of 10+ three times. That is very unusual.

4) ESPN’s Jeff Van Gundy is a great basketball analyst; he was explaining Friday night how Houston’s Clint Capela is actually an upgrade over Dwight Howard for the Rockets, because it allows Houston to easily define what they want to do on offense (pick/roll). As soon as he explained it, Rockets scored an easy basket, with Capela getting the layup.

3) CF Dexter Fowler signed with St Louis, the Cubs’ arch-rival; move allows Matt Carpenter to drop down into the middle of the Cardinals’ lineup.

2) I really like Florida State’s Darvin Cook as a running back; think he’ll be an excellent NFL player. Not sure why he’s not getting more of a push for postseason awards but he’ll get paid next year and for years to come.

1— Long time ago, I put myself thru college as a student manager of the school’s basketball team; it was mostly great fun, learned a lot plus our team was really good so that helped too.

For a year, our JV basketball coach shared an office with the school’s swimming coach. One day, a kid on the JV hoop team calls in to say he can’t come to practice that day- the swimming coach takes the call, and asks the kid for his number, so the JV coach can call him back.

“Coach already knows my number; I’m number 45.” And he hangs up.
