Red Sox at Tigers: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers (N/A)

Series tied 2-2.

The pitchers who set the tone for this American League Championship Series oppose each other again Thursday night when Anibal Sanchez takes the mound for host Detroit against Jon Lester of Boston in Game 5. Sanchez struck out 12 in six no-hit innings in the opener and Lester also was strong as the Tigers squeaked out a 1-0 victory. Detroit center fielder Austin Jackson reached base four times as the Tigers evened the series with a 7-3 victory Wednesday.

Detroit’s Jhonny Peralta singled in the lone run against Lester in the opener, a contest in which Sanchez walked six and was pulled after 116 pitches. Jackson’s standout Game 4 performance in which he had two hits, two walks and two RBIs came after he was dropped to eighth in the lineup due to a deep postseason slump (3-for-33, 18 strikeouts). Boston slugger David Ortiz was hitless in five at-bats in Game 4 to drop to 1-for-15 in the series – his only hit being the game-tying grand slam in Game 2. The Red Sox had 12 hits to match their total over the first three games but went 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.

TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, Fox

WEATHER: Temperatures in the low 50s with an 82 percent chance of rain and winds blowing WSW at 11 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Jon Lester (0-1, 1.42 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (1-0, 0.00)

Lester allowed one run and six hits in 6 1/3 innings in Game 1 and has given up just three runs in 14 postseason innings this month. The opener marked his first loss since Aug. 29 as he finished the regular season by allowing two or fewer earned runs in seven of his last 10 starts and has added two such performances in the postseason. That stretch included a Sept. 3 start when Lester struck out nine and allowed one run in seven innings to beat the Tigers.

Sanchez joined Walter Johnson (12 innings in 1924 World Series) as the only pitchers to strike out 12 and walk six in the same playoff game. The stellar outing represented a sharp turnaround from his start against Oakland in the AL Division Series when he allowed six runs (five earned) and eight hits – including three homers – in 4 1/3 innings. Sanchez has struck out 10 or more batters six times this season.

TRENDS:

* Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Detroit.
* Over is 14-6 in the last 20 meetings.
* Red Sox are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings in Detroit.

UMP TRENDS - Dale Scott:

* Under is 4-0 in Scott's last four games behind home plate.
* Red Sox are 1-5 in their last six games with Scott behind home plate.
* Home team is 5-1 in Scott's last six games behind home plate vs. Detroit.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Red Sox CF Jacoby Ellsbury went 4-for-5 with an RBI in Game 4 after going 1-for-10 over the first three games.

2. Tigers RF Torii Hunter batted leadoff for the first time since 1999 and had a crucial two-run double in Detroit’s five-run, second-inning uprising.

3. Boston batters have fanned 10 times or more in all four games and 53 overall in the series.

Each of the Detroit Tigers' starting pitchers has contributed a solid performance through the first four games of the AL championship series, but Anibal Sanchez was unhittable - literally - in Game 1.
After manager Jim Leyland's lineup adjustment helped the Tigers even their series with the Boston Red Sox at two games apiece, Sanchez opposes Jon Lester in crucial Game 5 on Thursday night at Comerica Park.
Doug Fister was the latest Detroit starter to slow Boston's lineup, giving up one run and striking out seven in six innings of a 7-3 win in Game 4 on Wednesday.
The Tigers' starting pitching has allowed three runs while striking out 42 in 27 innings in the series. The Red Sox had 12 hits in Game 4 as Jacoby Ellsbury went 4 for 5 with an RBI triple, but they finished 2 for 16 with runners in scoring position.

'The one thing when we've been in stretches like this, we continually do a very good job of creating opportunities,' Red Sox manager John Farrell said. 'We did that (Wednesday). We haven't done it so much in the first three games. But that's a tip of the hat to the pitching that we've been facing.'
After falling 1-0 in Game 3, Leyland dropped leadoff hitter Austin Jackson to eighth in the batting order for Game 4 and moved most everyone up one spot. Torii Hunter led off and had a two-run double, Miguel Cabrera went 2 for 4 with two RBIs batting second, and Jackson went 2 for 2, walked twice and drove in a pair of runs.
The center fielder entered the contest hitting .091 in the playoffs.
'I think it just helped me relax,' Jackson said. 'That was the goal. To get me to relax a little, be patient get a good pitch and let the rest take care of itself.'
Hunter believes the change sparked an offense that scored six run in the previous three games combined.
'That was pretty good. (Leyland) switched things up, kinda shake it up a little bit,' Hunter said. 'It gave us a different mindset. Miggy hitting second, me leading off. It gave us a different mindset to make things happen.'
Detroit will look to provide more support than it did for Sanchez in a 1-0 victory in Game 1. Sanchez (1-1, 4.35 ERA) pitched six innings of no-hit ball and struck out 12 while earning the win, and the Red Sox didn't get their first hit until one out in the bottom of the ninth.
David Ortiz, who hit a tying grand slam in Boston's Game 2 victory, was 3 for 3 with two homers in his career off Sanchez before going 0 for 3 against him in Game 1.
"My pitches were moving really good that day," Sanchez said. "I was ahead in some counts, that helped me striking them out. That was the key. That helped me that day."
The right-hander also was erratic at times and walked six, becoming the first starting pitcher to record 12 strikeouts and six walks in a playoff game since Walter Johnson did so in 12 innings for the Washington Senators against the New York Giants in Game 1 of the 1924 World Series.
"His stuff, at times, is probably some of the nastiest stuff we have on the team," catcher Alex Avila said. "He was erratic, but he was still able to make big pitches. That's what makes him so good - he's very unpredictable. He throws stuff in counts a hitter wouldn't normally see, just to keep them off balance."
Lester (1-1, 1.93) was pretty sharp himself in that contest, giving up one run and six hits in 6 1-3 innings. The only run he allowed came off a bloop single by Jhonny Peralta in the sixth.
"These guys are smart hitters, they know how I've gotten them out in the past and they know how they've gotten hits in the past," Lester said. "You have to take somewhere in the middle and adjust off that."
Cabrera is 11 for 21 with a homer, two doubles and six walks in his career off Lester, including the postseason.

Tigers at Red Sox: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox (-115, 7)

The host Boston Red Sox are one victory away from reaching the World Series for the first time since 2007 and will have to defeat either Max Scherzer or Justin Verlander to get there. Boston has a 3-2 lead over the Detroit Tigers in the American League Championship Series and Scherzer, the probable AL Cy Young Award winner, will attempt to even the series on Saturday. Verlander would start Game 7 on Sunday if the Red Sox don’t wrap up the series in six games.

Detroit third baseman Miguel Cabrera isn’t displaying his MVP-caliber form due to groin and abdominal injuries and first baseman Prince Fielder has played 17 consecutive postseason games without an RBI. “We have to go to Fenway and we have to fight hard to win a game,” Cabrera said after the Tigers' 4-3 loss in Game 5 on Thursday. “If we do that, we have to keep fighting and get the next one.” Boston’s Mike Napoli has been a force with a .375 average and two homers in the series, while designated hitter David Ortiz is 2-for-19 – with one of the hits being his memorable game-tying grand slam in Game 2 that saved the Red Sox from falling into an 0-2 hole.

TV: 4:37 p.m. ET, Fox

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the low-60s and wind will blow out to left field at 11 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Max Scherzer (0-0, 1.29 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Clay Buchholz (0-0, 7.94)

Scherzer dominated Boston hitters in Game 2, striking out 13 and allowing one run and two hits in seven innings. He departed with a 5-1 lead after 108 pitches before a bullpen meltdown helped the Red Sox rally for an improbable victory. One of Scherzer’s three regular-season losses came at Fenway Park when he allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings on Sept. 3.

Buchholz began strongly in Game 2 before wilting - giving up five runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Tigers torched him for four runs in the sixth with four extra-base hits, including homers by Cabrera and Alex Avila. Buchholz has a 6.17 ERA and has been touched for three homers in 11 2/3 innings this postseason.

TRENDS:

* Over is 7-1-1 in Scherzer's last nine starts vs. Red Sox.
* Red Sox are 8-1 in Buchholz's last nine starts with 5 days of rest.
* Red Sox are 6-1 in Buchholz's last seven starts vs. Tigers.

UMPIRE TRENDS - Dan Iassogna:

* Road team is 9-1 in Iassogna's last 10 games behind home plate.
* Under is 20-6-3 in Iassogna's last 29 games behind home plate.
* Red Sox are 1-5 in their last six games with Iassogna behind home plate.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Four of the five games have been decided by one run, which is one shy of the record for a league championship series - set by the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves in the 1999 NLCS.

2. Avila (knee) left Game 5 two innings after a collision at home plate and is questionable for Saturday’s contest.

3. Boston RHP Koji Uehara retired all five batters for his second save of the series. He has struck out seven in five scoreless innings in the ALCS.

Cardinals at Red Sox: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Boston Red Sox (-119, 7)

The St. Louis Cardinals have won a pair of World Series since falling to the Boston Red Sox in 2004 and will make their fourth trip to the Fall Classic in 10 years looking for revenge. The Red Sox completed a remarkable turnaround from last place in 2012 and will try to take down the Cardinals again when they host Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday. David Ortiz is the only player left from Boston’s sweep in 2004 and is still piling up key postseason hits.

St. Louis’ lone holdovers from that 2004 showdown are Mike Matheny, who went from starting catcher to manager, and Yadier Molina, who went from Matheny’s backup to one of the best catchers in the game. One of Boston’s big advantages in the American League playoffs was on the base paths - an area Molina regularly controls. The Cardinals and Red Sox are stacked up and down the roster and tied for the most wins in the majors during the regular season with 97.

TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, FOX

WEATHER: Temperatures in the high 40s with partly cloudy skies and a 52 percent chance of rain early Wesnesday. Winds blowing west at 7 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (2-1, 1.57 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Jon Lester (2-1, 2.33)

Wainwright served as the closer on St. Louis’ 2006 World Champion squad and was forced to watch the 2011 team win from the bench while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 32-year-old led the National League with 19 wins during the regular season and was spectacular during the NL playoffs, striking out 20 batters while issuing one walk in 23 total innings. Wainwright’s lone road playoff start was his only loss, allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings at Los Angeles.

Lester allowed two or fewer runs in each of his three postseason starts and 10 of the last 13 going back to the regular season. The 29-year-old won the clinching game of the 2007 World Series in Colorado, allowing three hits in 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Lester is 4-4 with a 2.49 ERA in 11 career postseason games - nine starts.

TRENDS:

* Under is 6-2-1 in the last nine meetings.
* Over is 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings in Boston.
* Cardinals are 7-3 in their last 10 World Series games.
* Red Sox are 8-0 in their last eight World Series games.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Cardinals 1B Allen Craig (foot) missed the first two rounds of the playoffs but is expected to be activated for the World Series.

2. Boston rookie 3B Xander Bogaerts reached base in eight of his 11 postseason plate appearances and is likely to stay in the lineup.

3. St. Louis RF Carlos Beltran owns a .337 batting average and .449 on-base percentage with 16 homers and 37 RBIs in 45 career playoff games, but will be making his World Series debut.

Cardinals at Red Sox: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Boston Red Sox (-125, 7)

Boston leads series 1-0.

The St. Louis Cardinals displayed some nerves in the field during the first game of the World Series and were bitten by errors in a loss. The Cardinals will look to clean up those mistakes when they visit the Boston Red Sox for Game 2 on Thursday. The Red Sox are riding a nine-game World Series winning streak and showed no jitters while jumping on top early in Game 1.

Mike Napoli followed an error with a three-run double in the first inning Wednesday and Boston got the aid of another error in a two-run second to jump in front of St. Louis. One of the best plays the Cardinals did make in the early innings came from Carlos Beltran, who reached into the bullpen in right field to rob David Ortiz of a grand slam. Beltran suffered a right rib contusion on that catch and was forced to leave the game, though, leaving his status in doubt for Game 2.

TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, Fox

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid 40s with partly cloudy skies and winds blowing west at 9 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (3-0, 0.43 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH John Lackey (2-0, 3.00)

Wacha was the NLCS MVP after tossing 13 2/3 scoreless innings over two starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 22-year-old rookie allowed a total of one run on eight hits over 21 innings this postseason while striking out 22 and issuing four walks. Wacha made both NLCS starts at home and posted a 4.34 ERA in five games - three starts - on the road during the regular season while going 3-2.

Lackey was moved up to the No. 2 spot for the World Series after dominating the Detroit Tigers through 6 2/3 scoreless innings in the ALCS. The veteran struck out eight and did not walk a batter in that turn, outdueling Justin Verlander in a 1-0 triumph. Lackey last pitched in the World Series as a rookie for the Los Angeles Angels in 2002, when he went 1-0 with a 4.38 ERA in three games - two starts.

TRENDS:

* Over is 6-2-1 in the last nine meetings in Boston.
* Cardinals are 2-7 in their last nine playoff road games.
* Red Sox are 9-0 in their last 9 World Series games.
* Red Sox are 6-1 in Lackey's last seven home starts.
* Cardinals are 4-0 in Wacha's last four starts.

UMP TRENDS - Mark Wegner:

* Under is 4-0-1 in Wegner's last five games behind home plate.
* Under is 25-12 in Wegner's last 37 interleague games behind home plate.
* Road team is 5-2 in Wegner's last 7 games behind home plate.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Beltran was taken for X-rays after leaving Game 1. Jon Jay replaced him in the field.

2. Ortiz hit a two-run homer Wednesday, giving him four in 11 playoff games this season.

3. St. Louis SS Pete Kozma went 0-for-3 and committed two errors in Game 1.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (104-70) at BOSTON RED SOX (105-68)

Sportsbook.ag Line: Boston -120 & 7 over -120
Coming off a dominating 8-1 victory on Wednesday night, the Red Sox will look to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series against the Cardinals in Thursday's Game 2.

The Boston bats came alive early and often against St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright, but he wasn’t helped by uncharacteristically poor defense. Only three of the five runs charged to him were earned, as the Cardinals finished the game with three errors. This was the same team that finished the regular season with the fourth-fewest errors in the majors. And when the defense made good plays, there were bad results like when RF Carlos Beltran robbed a home run, but injured his ribs in the process, making him questionable for Thursday’s action.
Rookie sensation Michael Wacha (6-1, 2.16 ERA) takes the mound for St. Louis in this one, amid a torrid playoff stretch during which he is 3-0 with an 0.43 ERA and 0.57 WHIP. He’ll face veteran John Lackey (12-13, 3.49 ERA), who doesn’t have Wacha’s stuff, but has some savvy as he showed in his last start, when he shut out the Tigers over 6.2 innings en route to a 1-0 Red Sox victory. And Boston always enjoys playing at home where it now has a 58-29 record (.667) this season, as compared to the Cardinals who are just barely above .500 on the road at 45-4

Wacha (0.97 WHIP) has been incredible since he was called up and only continues to get better with this stretch during the playoffs, during which he has averaged 7.0 innings per start. He has given up only one run the entire postseason while striking out 22 batters and only walking four in his 21 innings. He hasn’t been quite as good on the road this year, but still has fantastic numbers away from home, going 2-0 with a 2.62 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in four starts.
Though he has never faced the Red Sox in his short career, the key for him will be getting through the core of the Boston lineup in 3-4-5 hitters Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and Mike Napoli who combined to go 5-for-11 with 7 RBI and four runs in Game 1. It would be helpful for the Cardinals if Wacha can last deep into this game, with five relievers pitching for St. Louis on Wednesday. But the unit has a respectable 3.36 ERA and 1.21 WHIP this season, including a 2.18 ERA and 0.82 WHIP in the playoffs, and should be dependable if called upon by manager Mike Matheny.

Lackey (1.16 WHIP) is always happy to pitch at Fenway Park where he has a 2.71 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 2013, garnering a 7-3 record (team 10-4). At home he has 83 strikeouts and 18 walks over 96.1 innings, and all season he has fanned 175 batters and walked 43 in 201.1 frames. His penchant to give up long balls is also improved at home, giving up only eight at Fenway versus 18 on the road. Lackey has also historically been a quality postseason pitcher, with a 5-4 record, 3.10 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 16 career outings, 14 of which were starts. This includes a 2.58 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in seven starts since 2008.
He has never faced St. Louis in his career, though the two current Cardinals who he has been exposed to—OFs Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday—are a combined 0-for-16 with four strikeouts against him in their careers. Especially given that starter Jon Lester went 7.2 innings on Wednesday, Boston manager John Farrell should have no qualms looking to his relievers early in Game 2. Red Sox relievers have a 3.54 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 2013, and have been even better during the postseason, going 3-1 with a 1.08 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and five saves.

Red Sox at Cardinals: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at St. Louis Cardinals (-115, 7)

Series tied 2-2.

The first four games of the World Series have been won by the team that makes the fewest mistakes. Both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox will attempt to take control of the series when the former hosts Game 5 on Monday. The big mistake of Game 4 was a high sinker to Jonny Gomes, who deposited it beyond the left-field wall to give the Red Sox a 4-2 win.

St. Louis became the first team in history to end a World Series game on a pickoff when its other big mistake came back to bite it on Sunday. Rookie Kolten Wong was nabbed at first base to end the game with Carlos Beltran at the plate representing the tying run. That marks two straight series games ending in historic fashion after Boston made the big mistake of Game 3 on an obstruction call at third base.

TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, FOX

WEATHER: Temperatures in high 50s with partly cloudy skies and winds blowing ESE at 4 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Jon Lester (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (0-1, 5.40)

Lester dominated in Game 1, striking out eight and scattering five hits in 7 2/3 scoreless innings. The 29-year-old has not allowed a run in 13 1/3 career innings in the World Series and is dominant in the 2013 postseason with five runs allowed in 27 total innings. Lester’s worst start of the playoffs was his lone road turn, when he surrendered two runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings at Detroit.

Wainwright did not get a lot of help from the defense behind him in Game 1 and ended up being charged with five runs (three earned) on six hits in five innings. That made two straight losses in the postseason for Wainwright, who came out on the bad end of a 3-0 shutout at Los Angeles in the National League Championship Series. Wainwright got the win in each of his two postseason starts at home, yielding two runs on 11 hits in 16 combined innings.

TRENDS:

* Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in St. Louis.
* Red Sox are 5-2 in their last seven during Game 5 of a series.
* Cardinals are 7-1 in their last eight during Game 5 of a series.

UMP TRENDS - Bill Miller:

* Under is 36-17 in Miller's last 53 interleague games behind home plate.
* Under is 42-20 in Miller's last 62 games behind home plate.
* Home team is 6-2 in Miller's last eight interleague games behind home plate.

WALK-OFFS:

1. The Red Sox have committed errors in five straight games.

2. St. Louis 3B David Freese, who is the 2011 World Series MVP, is 1-for-12 with four strikeouts in the set.

3. Boston DH David Ortiz is playing 1B in the NL park and has reached base safely in each of his last seven trips to the plate.

World Series - Game 6

October 30, 2013

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (106-72) at BOSTON RED SOX (107-70)

Sportsbook.ag Line: Boston -115, St. Louis +105, Total: 7

The Red Sox return home Wednesday looking to knock off the Cardinals and clinch a World Series title in front of their home fans at Fenway Park for the first time since 1918.

Given the unusual endings to Game 3 and Game 4, Game 5 was quite normal as two Red Sox runs in the seventh proved decisive in a 3-1 victory. The Cardinals will be thrilled to have Michael Wacha (7-1, 2.22 ERA) on the mound for this all-important game, as the rookie right-hander has been brilliant this postseason with a 4-0 record in four starts to go along with a 1.00 ERA and 0.70 WHIP. In Game 2 at Boston, he gave up two runs in six innings to beat John Lackey for the win. Lackey (12-14, 3.51 ERA) will take the mound again in this one looking to avenge the last start, when he allowed three earned runs in 6.1 innings in the loss. He also got in some extra work in Game 4, throwing a hitless inning of relief.

Overall, the Red Sox have dominated at Fenway Park in 2013 with a 58-30 record (.659) while the Cardinals were strong on the road at 46-42 (.523). Returning to the AL will have big implications for both teams. For the Red Sox, it means David Ortiz, who could be on his way to the World Series MVP title with a ridiculous .733 BA, can return to DH while Mike Napoli slots in at first base. For the Cardinals, it should allow the ailing Allen Craig to DH while Matt Adams continues to play first.

Wacha (0.99 WHIP) seemingly gets better every start and now has 74 strikeouts, 25 walks and only six homers allowed in 81 innings. In his past three starts he has a 0.92 ERA and 0.81 WHIP. Although he has been slightly worse on the road this year (2.70 ERA, 1.17 WHIP), don’t expect that to be a problem with how he handled Fenway Park in his first try.

The one guy he has to watch out for is none other than Ortiz, who smacked a two-run shot in the sixth inning to give Boston its only runs of the game. In that contest, like many others, the St. Louis bullpen was tremendous, going three innings and giving up just one hit and no runs while striking out six. Cardinals relievers have a 2.20 ERA this postseason while keeping batters to a pithy .184 BA, fanning 43 batters in 45 innings.

Lackey (1.16 WHIP) is now pitching in his sixth postseason, placing a true veteran against a rookie. In 18 career postseason appearances (15 starts) he has a 3.14 ERA and 1.28 WHIP, going 5-5 with 73 strikeouts and 34 walks. Overall this season he struck out 181 and walked 45 in 207.2 innings, with the only scary part about his stat line being the 26 home runs he allowed. Lackey also pitched far better at home in 2013 with a 2.81 ERA and 1.08 WHIP at Fenway Park, going 7-4 (team 10-5) in those 15 starts.

Lackey was given a 2-1 lead by Ortiz’s home run in Game 2 but couldn’t hold on, with a sac-fly and error giving the Cardinals the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning. In his career, Lackey has done well against some of St. Louis’ key hitters including OFs Carlos Beltran (1-for-12) and Matt Holliday (1-for-10). And while the Cardinals bullpen has been good this postseason, the Boston bullpen has been even better, with a 1.34 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, .216 opponents' BA and seven saves in 47 innings.
