Rutgers at Louisville: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Louisville Cardinals (-19, 54)

Close victories over Rutgers in each of the last two seasons allowed Louisville to earn a share of the Big East title. As members of the American Athletic Conference, little is expected to change Thursday when the eighth-ranked Cardinals host the Scarlet Knights in the first and perhaps the only game between the schools as rivals in the newly formed league. While Rutgers is set to become a member of the Big Ten in 2014, Louisville will leave for the ACC.

A two-point win in 2011 over the Scarlet Knights sparked a 5-1 finish for the Cardinals and helped them secure a three-way tie for the conference title, while a three-point victory in 2012 forged a four-way tie and led to a Sugar Bowl triumph. Louisville is 5-0 for the second time in as many seasons in 2013 and has outscored its opponents 222-34. Rutgers has won four straight, but may find it difficult to recover on short rest after Saturday’s 55-52 triple-overtime win at Southern Methodist.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: Louisville opened at -16.5 and has been bet up as high as -19. The total opened at 55 and has come down to 54.

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid 70s with clear skies and winds blowing NE at 2 mph.

ABOUT RUTGERS (4-1, 1-0 AAC, 2-3 ATS): The Scarlet Knights have scored 28 points or more in each of the first five games for the first time in school history. One of the major reasons for the offensive output has been the play of quarterback Gary Nova, who ranks second in the conference with 13 touchdown passes and has thrown only four interceptions. Two of Nova’s 16 interceptions last season came in a 20-17 loss to Louisville, including one near midfield late in the fourth quarter as Rutgers was driving for a potential game-tying field goal.

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (5-0, 1-0, 3-2 ATS): While quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has looked every bit like the top NFL Draft pick he is expected to become (AAC-leading 16 touchdowns and 71.7 percent completion percentage), the Cardinals’ defense has been nearly as impressive. Louisville is allowing a Division I-best 6.8 points per game and has collected nine turnovers, which has helped lead to the nation’s sixth-best turnover margin (plus-1.4). Louisville coach Charlie Strong said wide receiver DeVante Parker is day-to-day after he injured his right shoulder in Saturday’s 30-7 victory at Temple.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings.
* Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
* Scarlet Knights are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games overall.
* Cardinals are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games overall.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Bridgewater has thrown a touchdown pass in 17 consecutive games, tied with Dave Ragone for the most in school history.

2. Rutgers ranks 22nd in the country in scoring offense (40 points per game) after finishing 98th a season ago.

3. The Cardinals have outscored their opponents 127-3 in the first half.

Arizona at USC: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona Wildcats at USC Trojans (-6, 47.5)

The Lane Kiffin era has ended and it will be interim coach Ed Orgeron running the team when USC hosts Arizona in Thursday’s crucial Pac-12 contest. Athletic director Pat Haden fired Kiffin after the Trojans suffered a 62-41 loss to Arizona State on Sept. 28 and Orgeron is looking to overcome a 0-2 start in conference play. Arizona is coming off a loss to Washington and needs a victory over USC to remain a factor in the Pac-12 South race.

Orgeron went 10-25 as head coach of Mississippi from 2005-07 and has made it a major priority to change the mood of the team. “I want our guys to believe and have a little fun,” Orgeron said. “One of the things we can do as a staff is get really close to our players, circle the wagons, have fun, and let the chips fall where they may.” Trojans receiver Marqise Lee (knee) could miss the game, which won’t sadden Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez too much due to Lee catching 16 passes for a Pac-12 record 345 yards against the Wildcats last season. “We didn’t have any answer for him last year,” Rodriguez said. “He got open, got involved, and we just couldn’t catch up with him.”

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1.

LINE: Southern Cal opened as a 5-point favorite and moved to -6. The total opened at 48.5 and was bet down to 47.5.

WEATHER: Temperatures in low 60s with clear skies and winds blowing west at 5 mph.

ABOUT ARIZONA (3-1, 0-1 Pac-12 South, 2-2 ATS): Junior running back Ka’Deem Carey is looking for his eighth consecutive 100-yard outing and has scored at least one touchdown in 17 of his last 18 games. Senior quarterback B.J. Denker is only a 50 percent passer and tossed his first two interceptions of the campaign in the loss to Washington but excels as a rusher (280 yards, team-high six touchdowns). An opportunistic defense has intercepted seven passes with junior safety Tra’Mayne Bondurant recording three – returning two for touchdowns – while freshman outside linebacker Scooby Wright has recorded a team-leading 28 tackles.

ABOUT USC (3-2, 0-2 Pac-12 South, 1-4 ATS): Lee has modest season totals of 30 receptions for 385 yards and was termed questionable by Orgeron on Monday, as was senior outside linebacker Morgan Breslin (hip), who has a team-best 7.5 tackles for loss. Senior running back Silas Redd (knee) could see action for the first time but sophomore Tre Madden (583 yards) has a firm grip on the starting job after topping 100 yards in four of five games. The 62 points allowed against Arizona State matched for worst in school history and was a shocking development considering the presence of stars like Breslin, junior safety Dion Bailey (team-high 28 tackles, two interceptions), junior defensive end George Uko (four sacks) and sophomore defensive end Leonard Williams (seven tackles for loss).

TRENDS:

* Wildcats are 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings in Southern California.
* Wildcats are 7-1 ATS in their last eight meetings.
* Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
* Underdog is 8-0 ATS in their last eight meetings.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. USC leads the series 28-8, but Arizona posted a 39-36 home win in last season’s meeting.

2. The Wildcats are allowing 14.3 points per game, ninth-best nationally.

3. Trojans sophomore QB Cody Kessler is completing 63.5 percent of his passes with six touchdowns against four interceptions.

Tigers at Athletics: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Oakland Athletics (+109, 7)

The Detroit Tigers finally found their offensive form in Game 4 and used it to force a decisive Game 5 in the American League Division Series. The Tigers will head back on the road, where they managed a total of three runs in the first two games, and visit the Oakland Athletics for Game 5 on Thursday. Detroit still is not getting much from Miguel Cabrera but the supporting cast, led by Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta, is stepping up.

The Tigers had scored in only two innings in the first three games to fall behind 2-1 in the best-of-five series but overcame a pair of deficits in Tuesday’s 8-6 triumph. The Athletics finally showed some vulnerability in the bullpen, which had three relievers combine to allow five runs in the final two innings of Game 4. Detroit won a Game 5 in Oakland in last season’s ALDS behind a four-hit shutout from Justin Verlander, who is expected to get the nod on Thursday.

TV: 9:07 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Temperatures in the low 60s with clear skies and winds blowing WSW at 6 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Justin Verlander (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Bartolo Colon (0-1, 4.50)

Verlander struck out 11 and allowed four hits in Saturday’s Game 2 but did not factor in the decision when Oakland ended up claiming a 1-0 victory. The former Cy Young Award winner has now made three ALDS starts against the Athletics in the last two seasons and yielded a total of one run and 11 hits while striking out 33 in 23 innings. Verlander threw at least 117 pitches in each one of those starts.

Colon allowed three runs in the first inning of Game 1 but shut the Tigers down for the next five. The burly veteran still absorbed the loss while scattering 10 hits. Colon had not surrendered more than two earned runs in any of his last six regular-season starts, including a five-inning stint at Detroit on Aug. 29.

TRENDS:

* Over is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
* Under is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings in Oakland.
* Tigers are 6-2 in Verlanders last eight starts vs. Athletics.
* Under is 10-4 in Verlanders last 14 starts vs. Athletics.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Cabrera is 4-for-16 with four singles and one RBI in the ALDS while fighting through abdominal and groin injuries.

2. Oakland CF Coco Crisp is 7-for-9 with four runs scored in the last two games.

3. Detroit RHP Max Scherzer came out of the bullpen in Game 4 and earned the win in relief. He should be available again in Game 5.

American League Division Series Preview from The Sports Network

Thursday, October 10th (All times Eastern)

Detroit Tigers (2-2) at Oakland Athletics (2-2), 8:07 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Detroit - Justin Verlander (0-0, 0.00) Oakland - Sonny Gray (0-0, 0.00)

(SportsNetwork.com) - Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander endured one of the worst years of his career this past season. But on Thursday, Verlander can put a season's worth of frustration behind him, as he takes the ball for the Tigers in the decisive fifth game of the American League Division Series against the Oakland Athletics.

"It's not just another game," Verlander said. "The season is on the line. The whole season, the way we battled and played as a team, comes down to one game. May the best team win. You can't treat it like another game, you know. It's a little bit different. There is more to it. It's going to be fun. It's what you play the game for. It's exciting. This is what you dream of as a kid, to be on the mound in a clinching game."

Of course, Verlander was in this exact same position last year and responded by striking out 11 in a four-hit shutout to propel the Tigers to the ALCS. He was equally as dominant against the A's in Game 2 of this series, but did not get a decision, despite tossing seven scoreless innings in his team's 1-0 loss.

Verlander, though, was 13-12 during the season and finished the year with his highest ERA (3.46), lowest strikeout rate (23.5 percent) and lowest innings total (218 1/3) since 2008 and battled through reduced velocity.

However, the 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner started to show signs of the pitcher he has been down the stretch and pitched to a 2.27 ERA in his final six starts of the regular season.

"I think it's just some of the adjustments I made, one of the maybe a thousand that I tried to make this year," he said. "It was definitely a grind all year. Then it reached a point where I realized it was going to take awhile, that it wasn't going to be one thing I had to fix."

Oakland, meanwhile, has relied on a lot of young arms this season. If they want to play another game they'll need to lean on another, as for the seventh time in their last 10 postseason games the A's will hand the ball to a rookie hurler.

Sonny Gray takes the ball as he did in Game 2 versus Verlander and the Tigers and will try to duplicate that performance which saw him strike out nine batters over eight scoreless innings.

A 23-year-old righty, Gray has just 11 big league starts under his belt. Yet, Oakland manager Bob Melvin chose him rather than 40-year-old Bartolo Colon, who won 18 games this season and was second in the AL with a 2.65 ERA.

"Obviously, we had two great options there with Bartolo," A's manager Bob Melvin said during a late-afternoon conference call Wednesday. "We looked at it at a bunch of different angles. We have a lot of smart people in our front office and in our baseball operations and the short of it is it came down to Sonny and the last game he pitched in similar conditions in our ballpark. So that's the route we're going to go."

Including the Game 2 assignment, Gray pitched to a 1.66 ERA in seven home starts. He's also struck out 47 batters over 48 2/3 innings of those outings.

"He's got a power arm and lot of talent, but it's hard to know -- like in Game 2 -- how a young guy is going to react," A's shortstop Jed Lowrie said about Gray. "But he went out there with all the confidence in the world and performed pretty well."

Detroit staved off elimination on Tuesday, as it rallied twice and held on to beat the Athletics, 8-6. Victor Martinez homered in the win, while Game 1 winner Max Scherzer, who relieved starter Doug Fister in the seventh, escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the eighth with two strikeouts and a line drive for the Tigers, who are trying to get back to the ALCS for the second straight year.

"To be able to get out of that jam, I mean, that's something I'll never forget," said Scherzer. "That's something I'm not really asked to do, and tonight I was."

Lowrie hit a two-run homer and knocked in Oakland's first three runs as the A's built a 3-0 lead through the first 4 1/2 innings.

Oakland will be trying to buck a trend of Game 5 failures on Thursday. The A's have lost all five Game 5s they have played in the ALDS and are a miserable 1-11 in potential clinching games since losing the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds back in 1990.

Detroit, which lost four of seven games against the A's during the season, has beaten Oakland the last two times these teams have met in the postseason. The A's only win against the Tigers in the playoffs came in the 1972 ALCS, which started a run of three consecutive world titles for Oakland.

All eyes on Verlander

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Verlander is no longer the pitcher he was. He's no longer dominant. Max Scherzer is now the ace of the Detroit Tigers.

Verlander has heard it all this season, and rightfully so.

The former American League Cy Young Award and MVP winner endured arguably the worst season of his career, as he was 13-12 and finished the year with his highest ERA (3.46), lowest strikeout rate (23.5 percent) and lowest innings total (218 1/3) since 2008 and battled through reduced velocity.

In fact, by his own admission, he struggled to find himself all year.

If it seems like we've been here before, well, we have. Verlander, of course, was in this exact same position last year and struck out 11 A's in a shutout to move the Tigers forward. He was equally as dominant against Oakland in Game 2 on Saturday, as he again fanned 11 and allowed just four hits over seven scoreless innings in his team's 1-0 loss.

But, as marvelous as Verlander was in that game and despite his remarkable resume, Tigers manager Jim Leyland had intended to go with Scherzer should there be a Game 5.

It was almost a win-win for Leyland. On the one hand you have Verlander and the other you have Scherzer, who is the front-runner for the AL Cy Young Award this season after winning an MLB-best 21 games and pitching to a league-low 0.970 WHIP.

But Leyland had to call on Scherzer out of the bullpen in Game 4, leaving Verlander as the go-to-guy in the winner-take-all showdown on Thursday.

"We used a 21-game winner out of the bullpen and now we can pitch a Cy Young winner in his place," marveled Tigers center fielder Austin Jackson. "How many teams could do that?"

You can probably make the argument that the Tigers are better off to be in the position they are. As good as Scherzer was this year, Verlander is still Verlander, especially with the way he's pitched of late.

Verlander was, of course, magnificent in Game 2, but he had shown signs leading up to that start of being the shutdown pitcher he has been throughout his career, as he pitched to a 2.27 ERA over his final six starts of the regular season.

"I think it's just some of the adjustments I made, one of the maybe a thousand that I tried to make this year," he said. "It was definitely a grind all year. Then it reached a point where I realized it was going to take awhile, that it wasn't going to be one thing I had to fix."

Verlander, though, doesn't even get a chance at this game had it not been for Scherzer. The hard-throwing righty came on in relief of Doug Fister in the seventh inning on Tuesday and promptly allowed the A's to take a one-run lead.

The Tigers responded with two runs in their half of the seventh, but Scherzer appeared ready to give it right back, as he loaded the bases in the eighth before recording an out.

"I've seen him fired up," catcher Alex Avila said. "That's why I gave him that nickname, 'Mad Max.' It's when he goes to an enthusiasm level when he needs it -- and the situation called for it."

Scherzer then showed why he was the best pitcher in the AL this season, as he bore down and struck out both Josh Reddick and Stephen Vogt, then ran a full count against Alberto Callaspo before getting the pinch-hitter on a line drive to center field to end the threat.

"To be able to get out of that jam, I mean, that's something I'll never forget," Scherzer said. "That's something I'm not really asked to do, and tonight I was."

The Tigers tacked on three runs after that and escaped with an 8-6 win to force the fifth game.

And with that, fate turned to Verlander.

Not all that bad of a scenario if you root for the Tigers.

Red Sox at Tigers: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers

Series is tied 1-1.

David Ortiz added to his playoff lore in Game 2 with the big blow of a memorable comeback and the Boston Red Sox seek to take a 2-1 lead in the American League Championship Series when the scene moves to Detroit for Game 3 on Tuesday. Boston recovered from a five-run deficit with Ortiz hitting a game-tying grand slam in the eighth and Jarrod Saltalamacchia driving in the winning run an inning later. The Tigers attempt to recover behind red-hot Justin Verlander.

Verlander hasn’t allowed a run in 15 postseason innings this October and Boston hitters have struggled against Detroit starters in the series, totaling one run and two hits while striking out 25 times in 13 innings against Anibal Sanchez and Max Scherzer. The Tigers appeared headed to a 2-0 series lead prior to the bullpen meltdown that saw Ortiz belt the 15th postseason homer of his career, a blast off Joaquin Benoit that Detroit right fielder Torii Hunter was unable to grab and flipped over the low wall and into the Boston bullpen. “Postseason is something that can work both ways for you,” Ortiz said of his playoff success. “It can go well if you stay calm. Or it can go bad if you try to overdo things.”

TV: 4:07 p.m. ET, Fox

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the mid-60s with wind blowing in from CF at 11 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH John Lackey (10-13, 3.52 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Justin Verlander (13-12, 3.46)

Lackey defeated Tampa Bay in the AL Division Series when he gave up four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He went 0-1 with a 3.14 ERA in two starts against Detroit this season and his career mark is 6-3 with a 3.89 ERA in 12 outings. Lackey went 3-7 with a 4.35 ERA after the All-Star break, a huge drop from a 2.78 mark beforehand.

Verlander struck out 21 while allowing six hits and two walks against Oakland in the ALDS. He allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings in a no-decision against Boston on June 23 and his career record is 3-4 with a 3.65 ERA in 11 starts. Verlander was 6-7 with a 3.73 ERA in 17 regular-season home starts.

Cardinals at Dodgers: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers (N/A)

St. Louis leads series 3-1.

The St. Louis Cardinals are one win away from their 19th trip to the World Series. The Cardinals will attempt to lock up the National League pennant behind Joe Kelly when they visit the Los Angeles Dodgers for Game 5 of the NL Championship Series on Wednesday. St. Louis is riding its excellent pitching in the series and finally got something out of Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday in the 4-2 triumph in Game 4.

Carpenter and Holliday were a combined 2-for-23 in the first three games but totaled three hits and combined for three RBIs to help the Cardinals take a commanding 3-1 lead. The Dodgers are getting their own solid pitching but are lacking something on offense, where Andre Ethier and Hanley Ramirez are playing through pain. Ramirez (fractured rib) went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts and was in noticeable pain before being removed on Tuesday.

TV: 4:07 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Temperatures in the high 70s with clear skies and winds blow SW at 5 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Joe Kelly (10-5, 2.69 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Zack Greinke (15-4, 2.63)

Kelly went up against Greinke in Game 1 and held his own, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five in six innings. The 25-year-old owns a power sinker that helped him generate 11 ground balls in Game 1 and 19 in two postseason outings. Kelly was a better pitcher on the road during the regular season, going 5-1 with a 2.07 ERA in 19 games - seven starts.

Greinke surrendered a total of eight hits in 14 innings during his two postseason starts and was at his best against the Cardinals in Game 1, striking out 10 while allowing two runs on four hits in eight innings. The Dodgers’ struggling offense is the only thing keeping the former Cy Young Award winner from a win in the playoffs. Greinke went 8-2 with a 2.11 ERA in 14 starts at home during the regular season.

TRENDS:

* Under is 5-0 in the last five meetings.
* Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Los Angeles.
* Dodgers are 12-2 in Greinke's last 14 home starts.
* Over is 5-1-1 in Kelly's last 7 starts overall.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Ramirez did not take a pain-killing injection before Game 4 and will be a game-time decision Wednesday.

2. St. Louis held a 3-1 lead in the NLCS over the San Francisco Giants last season before dropping three straight.

3. Los Angeles suffered 4-1 losses in each of its last two trips to the NLCS (2008 and 2009) and is looking for its first trip to the World Series since 1988.

Game 5 Pitching Matchups
St. Louis - Joe Kelly (10-5, 2.73 ERA)
-- The Cardinals are 6-3 in his last nine starts, including an extra-innings victory in Game 1. Kelly tossed six innings and allowed six hits and two earned runs, while leaving the game tied at 2-2. St. Louis scored the game-winning run in the 12th inning as the Cards won for the third time in the home 'dog role with Kelly starting.
-- St. Louis won five of Kelly's eight road starts this season, but went 1-2 in the underdog role. Kelly is originally from Anaheim, so this will be his first start in his native Southern California.

Series recap:
The underdog has profited in this series by winning twice, including in Tuesday's 1-0 victory by Boston as +130 'dogs. The only favorite win came in Game 2, as the Red Sox had to rally from a 5-0 deficit to stun the Tigers, 6-5. The 'under' is 2-1 in this series, with obviously the only 'over' cashing in Game 2.
Game 4 Pitching Matchups
Boston - Jake Peavy (12-5, 4.17 ERA)
-- The Red Sox are 6-5 in his 11 starts since coming over from the White Sox in a trade. Boston has won four of Peavy's last five starts away from Fenway Park, including the series-clincher in the ALDS at Tampa Bay.
-- In Peavy's lone start against the Tigers this season (as a member of the White Sox), the righty gave up four earned runs in seven innings as Chicago held off Detroit, 7-4 as a +135 home 'dog.
-- The 'under' is 6-4-1 in Peavy's 11 starts with Boston, while going 4-4 to the 'under' on the road.
Detroit - Doug Fister (14-9, 3.67 ERA)
-- The Tigers have won 10 of Fister's 16 home starts this season, including an 8-6 comeback triumph in Game 4 of the ALDS against Oakland.
-- Detroit owns a 5-1 record in Fister's six career playoff starts, while going 3-0 at Comerica Park.
-- Fister split a pair of starts against the Sox this season. The Tigers lost as a home favorite to Boston in late June as Fister was racked by allowing 11 hits and six earned runs in less than four innings of work. Fister rebounded with a win as a +130 road underdog at Fenway Park in early September by tossing seven scoreless innings in a 3-0 triumph.
