**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: DD Lohaus handicaps the Kentucky Derby....

First Saturday in May; must be Kentucky Derby Day!

Snuck up on me this year which again proves that the older you get, the faster time flies.

As I write this analysis and give my picks, the weather for Saturday looks gorgeous and should allow for all runners to give their best efforts. It is with that assumption that I make my analysis and selections.

The conversation begins with Nyquist. He has done nothing wrong and has been on quite a run since last year. He has beaten another top contender in this race (Exaggerator) three times! This team has won the Derby (and Preakness) before and Nyquist will likely be favored for the race. He is a logical favorite and his versatile running style makes him very dangerous.

Mohaymen came up short in the much anticipated race with Nyquist in the Florida Derby. Trainer calls it 'a throw out' and this guy looked fantastic in his last workout (46.8). May be a bit too fast to have enough left to handle this group but also could be peaking at the right time; maybe he didn't like losing his last (and first) in Florida and will be extra motivated to turn the tables on Nyquist. A lot to like if you're willing to throw out the last.

Gun Runner, for Steve Asmussen, is a the prototypical 'sharp-looker' from a high octane outfit. Has a steady race tab and been winning quite nicely. He will have to be on his toes for this one but may be ready to step forward. Like the 6F workout; not necessarily the time but the distance; tells me he has some bottom... I would not be surprised if this one makes some noise.

Exaggerator, as mentioned earlier is a top contender but hasn't figured out how to be Nyquist. A prime post position should give him lots of choices. Not sure I like to pick a horse that's been beaten three times by the expected race favorite. He is a hard knocker who gives an honest effort and maybe he just needed to figure things out. I think he's more likely to get a minor award.

Destin has had eight weeks off since his last race; a win in the Tampa Derby. This one has the looks of a runner flying under the radar for Todd Pletcher (if that's possible). Not thrilled with his latest workout, but I wouldn't be shocked if this one shows well on Saturday. This one will offer some value and worth playing underneath top ones.

The Bets:

$20WP Mohaymen: I think this guys turns the table and runs BIG on Saturday.

$10Ex Mohaymen/Nyquist, Gun Runner, Exaggerator, Destin

$5Ex Nyquist, Gun Runner, Exaggerator, Destin/Mohaymen

$1ExBx Nyquist/Gun Runner/Exaggerator/Destin

$2Tri Mohaymen/Nyquist/Gun Runner, Exaggerator, Destin

Total Bets: $118.00

Underachieving NL Pitchers
May 6, 2016

Heading into the second month of the season there are several prominent pitchers off to disappointing starts. Here are a few National League starters that could be due for a turnaround in the coming weeks and may provide some value in some of their upcoming starts.

Jose Fernandez - Miami Marlins:
The Marlins have quietly been one of the hottest teams in baseball the past two weeks with a 10-1 run through May 5 including getting sweeps over the Dodgers and Diamondbacks. While the attention in the NL East is rightfully on the Mets and Nationals, Miami may have the tools to slide into the Wild Card picture this season. The solid record comes even with the disappointing news of Dee Gordon being suspended as well as a bit of a struggle through six starts for ace Jose Fernandez.

With a 4.28 ERA, Fernandez has battled in the early going without a scoreless start and without going further than six innings in any game. His 47 strikeouts in fewer than 34 innings will tell you that his stuff is still top shelf and he has been unlucky with a .360 BABIP so far this season. Pitching on an overlooked Marlins team, Fernandez won’t be overvalued like some of the big name pitchers on high profile squads and his conventional numbers figure to only improve the rest of the way.

Zack Greinke - Arizona Diamondbacks: Twice this season, Greinke has allowed seven runs in an outing to boost his ERA up to 5.50 on the season. Greinke’s strikeout rate has been down so far this season and he has allowed 47 hits in fewer than 38 innings of work. He still has very impressive command and he should find better results as through six starts his FIP is nearly two runs lower than his ERA and he has been burned by a very high batting average on balls in play as well as a very low rate of stranding runners as a third of his base runners have come around to score. Trading Dodger Stadium for Chase Field means Greinke likely won’t match his dominant 2015 season numbers, but any suggestion that Greinke is no longer an elite starter in the NL is foolish.

John Lackey - Chicago Cubs:
Supporting Jake Arrieta or Jon Lester for the red-hot Cubs costs a severe premium, but veteran John Lackey can still be found for reasonable prices in many outings. Lackey owns an average 4.32 ERA but he has done a good job of keeping runners off the bases only to see almost 40 percent of those base runners come around to score. Lackey finished with a 2.77 ERA last season for the Cardinals with only about 17 percent of base runners scoring with him on the mound.

Expect his 2016 numbers to fall somewhere in the middle of those two figures and Lackey is a good candidate to have improved numbers in the coming weeks. With baseball’s best record, the Cubs are likely to be favored almost every night, but Lackey will likely be relatively discounted compared with the rest of the staff until his conventional numbers improve with a six-run 2016 debut still weighing on his season statistics.

Alex Wood - Los Angeles Dodgers:
With a great 2014 season and strong numbers in 20 starts for the Braves last season, Alex Wood was acquired for the stretch run with the Dodgers last season. He didn’t have the same success despite moving to a more favorable ballpark and playing with a better team behind him, eventually relegated to only mop-up duty in the playoffs. Wood looked like a promising candidate to help the Dodgers get through the early season injuries in the rotation, but he hasn’t gotten the job done so far with a 5.18 ERA in six starts and the Dodgers only going 2-4 behind him.

Wood had a rough opening start, but since that game he has not allowed more than seven hits in any start and over his last three outings he has 21 strikeouts against just four walks. A .324 BABIP has hurt his cause as well as a very low rate of stranding runners so far through six starts. He has had to make a start in Colorado already this season and he has only pitched twice at home, making his best two starts of the season at Dodger Stadium. As a left-hander with an unconventional delivery, Wood looks like a good bet to show improvement in the coming months and he may be worth a look in upcoming home starts with much more modest pricing compared with Clayton Kershaw or Kenta Maeda.

Jerad Eickhoff - Philadelphia Phillies:
Aaron Nola and Vincent Velasquez are rightfully getting some attention for the surprising Phillies, but Eickhoff also deserves to be looked at as a quality prospect with potential even if his ceiling is a bit lower. Eickhoff is having a lot of success with his curveball and while he is just 1-4 this season he has a nearly 5:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In five of his six starts, he has allowed six or fewer hits and he has a 2.25 ERA in his home starts.

Even with the strong start to the season, the Phillies seem likely to be dogged almost every game this season and the prices will be much more favorable with Eickhoff on the mound in comparison to Velasquez or Nola, especially with the early season numbers that have been generated. In 14 big league starts, Eickhoff has 83 strikeouts while walking just 20 batters and that type of command and swing-and-miss potential is likely to lead to success even if the first month of the season has not gone as well as would be expected.

LEADING OFF: Hammel tries to top Nats for 10th straight time
May 7, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

HAM IT UP

Cubs righty Jason Hammel is 9-0 in 11 career starts vs. Washington. He'll try to add to his streak when he faces the Nationals at Wrigley Field.

NICE PRICE

Red Sox newcomer David Price is 4-0 in six starts despite a 6.14 ERA. He beat the Yankees last weekend, and tries to do it again in a rematch with Nathan Eovaldi in the Bronx.

FEELING BETTER?

The Cardinals will check on Carlos Martinez, a day after he left his start vs. Pittsburgh in the fourth inning because of fatigue.

Martinez gave up a run in 3 1/3 innings and 29 of his 52 pitches were strikes.

MAYBE

The Royals will see whether third baseman Mike Moustakas is able to start at Cleveland. He was a late scratch from the lineup Friday night because of a sore left thumb. He missed two starts earlier this week against Washington because of the same problem.

TRY AGAIN

Toronto knuckleballer R.A. Dickey is 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA in his last five starts. He hopes to end the streak against the visiting Dodgers, who send ace Clayton Kershaw to the mound.

Tim Lincecum sharp in showcase for big league scouts
May 6, 2016

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) Tim Lincecum strode to the mound inside a nearly empty Scottsdale Stadium, the only sounds coming from the birds and the cars on the streets outside.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner picked up a ball, started his motion and let it fly as radar guns rose behind the plate. A series of camera clicks followed, then a pop of the glove.

The radar guns went down, pencils furiously scribbled and Lincecum started all over again.

''It's different, a lot like high school, trying to show your stuff off again,'' Lincecum said.

A free agent on the mend from hip surgery, Lincecum threw 41 pitches Friday for about three dozen scouts representing nearly every major league club at the spring training home of the only team he's ever played for, the San Francisco Giants.

The 31-year-old right-hander mixed up his pitches and hit most of his spots during his showcase, consistently reaching 88 mph to 91 mph on the scouts' radar guns. He felt good after and now hopes to catch on with a big league team soon, preferably as a starter.

''I'm happy,'' Lincecum said. ''I was able to throw strikes with my pitches, stay within myself, commanded all of my pitches. I only had a couple of misses and they weren't out over the plate, so that's encouraging for me.''

One of baseball's best pitchers in his prime, Lincecum won the NL Cy Young Award in 2008 and 2009 and made four All-Star Game appearances. He helped the Giants win three World Series titles in five years and had a pair of no-hitters against San Diego in an 11-month span between the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Lincecum earned his nickname ''The Freak'' by defying the stereotype of what a big-league pitcher is supposed to be, generating massive amounts of torque with his 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame.

Needing a long stride to generate the leverage, Lincecum started having trouble with his hips due to the pounding, seeing his velocity dip and his ERA rise as he was forced to throw mostly with his arm.

The right-hander went 7-4 with a 4.13 ERA in 15 starts last season and did not pitch after June 27 due to degenerative issues with his hips.

Lincecum had surgery on Sept. 3 and did not sign with a team after finishing up a $35 million, two-year contract last season.

He worked through the offseason to rehabilitate his hip and has spent the past few weeks pitching on back fields at the Giants' spring training complex.

Lincecum arrived at Scottsdale Stadium about an hour before his session, slipping into the clubhouse as about a dozen fans gathered in the parking lot.

Lincecum emerged from the clubhouse about 15 minutes before he was schedule to throw, walking down a few steps and hopping a short fence down the first base side instead of going through the dugout.

Wearing green shorts with leggings underneath and a black shirt with blue stripes down the sleeves, Lincecum stretched, did some light running and played catch before walking back to the dugout.

Lincecum grabbed a box of balls before walking out to the mound as fans stood atop a parking garage beyond the left field wall to catch a glimpse.

He threw a few warmup pitches then went through two sessions with a five-minute break in between.

Most of the scouts seemed impressed with his outing, though the big questions are about his health and whether he could do it with live hitters at the plate.

''This whole process has taken a lot of time,'' Lincecum said. ''It's been a little rigorous, a little Groundhog Day-ish, but making it to today and all the work that's been put in to this point today has definitely showed today and I feel good about that.''

Lincecum's outing was short, but he has been working toward lengthening his bullpen sessions so he could jump in as a starter. Numerous teams have shown interest in one of baseball's most unique players, including his former team, which has struggled with its starting rotation recently.

''If it leads toward being a starter, that would be good,'' Lincecum said. ''I've been working my butt off with pitch counts, working off that five-day rotation to elongate myself as a pitcher and a starter. It just continues today.''

Column: Braves go from model franchise to laughingstock
May 7, 2016

ATLANTA (AP) A slew of pennants line the left-field facade at Turner Field, a sobering reminder of the team that used to play here.

They won't be putting up another one, not in this ballpark.

The Atlanta Braves are heading for a new stadium in 2017, and this season is already lost.

Really, the only real suspense is how long manager Fredi Gonzalez will last (probably not much longer) and how many games this dumpster of a team will lose by the time it's done.

It's going to be a lot, for sure.

Will it be a season of historically bad proportions? It very well could be.

With another loss Friday night to Arizona, the Braves slid to 7-21 for the season, a hideous .250 winning percentage. It's still early, but only three teams in baseball's modern era (1900-present) have finished at those depths.

Atlanta's plunge over the last two seasons has been especially jarring in light of this team's longtime place as one of baseball's flagship franchises, a team that won an unprecedented 14 straight division titles and captured its most recent NL East championship just three years ago.

Now, the Braves are a team that can't hit (last in the majors in runs, homers and average), can't pitch (a 4.81 team ERA) and can't field (only one team has committed more errors than Atlanta's 24).

More troubling is the absentee ownership, a callous front office that has left Gonzalez unfairly flapping in the breeze, and the impending move to the suburbs for a stadium that wasn't needed (Turner Field is only 20 years old) and will be paid for with a huge chunk of taxpayer dollars.

A team that once did everything right - at least until it got to the World Series - is stirring up all sorts of ill will that might take years to overcome, even if the massive rebuilding job pans out in the end.

In the meantime, this season is a lame duck in every sense of the word.

Outfielder Jeff Francoeur took note of that while remembering how he played on a 99-loss Phillies team a year ago.

''This year is a little different,'' he said before Friday's 7-2 loss. ''Last year, there were a lot of, lot of, lot of young guys. Here, it's kind of stuck in the middle.''

Much of the vitriol in Atlanta has rightly been directed at Liberty Media, the team's out-of-state and out-of-touch owners, who have sliced payroll and seem to view the Braves as a real estate entity more than a baseball team. Indeed, that's a big reason the team is heading to suburban Cobb County.

Liberty Media was able to find a sucker of a local government that was willing to fork over upward of $400 million to build a stadium and an adjacent shopping mall that the team's ownership is apparently more excited about than the product it's putting on the field.

In fact, when season tickets for 2017 go on sale next week, the slogan should be: ''Don't miss a chance to see all the exciting action at Braves, Bath & Beyond.''

''It's tough,'' said Gonzalez, who admitted to doing some ''soul searching'' during an off day Thursday, with speculation swirling about his future. ''But that's a challenge I'm going to take. We're not going to 90-10 the rest of the way. But we're going to play better.''

To be fair, the Braves are attempting to follow a path that worked in Kansas City and Houston, where scorched-earth overhauls resulted in short-term pain but gratifying results in the end. The Royals have played in the last two World Series and are the reigning champions. The Astros went from 111 losses in 2013 to a playoff spot last season (though they've taken a step back this year).

But to make it work, a team must make a LOT of right decisions on players who are often several years away from playing in the big leagues. The Braves deserve points for fleecing Arizona of former No. 1 pick Dansby Swanson and top pitching prospect Aaron Blair, but a couple of moves have been real puzzlers.

Andrelton Simmons, perhaps the best defensive shortstop in the game and only 26, was dealt to the Angels. The bigger head-scratcher came at last year's trade deadline, when the Braves traded a young left-handed starter (Alex Wood) and a top infield prospect (Jose Peraza) to the Dodgers for Cuban defector Hector Olivera.

Olivera is already 31, didn't show much late last season or early this year, and now his future is in limbo after an arrest last month on misdemeanor assault and battery charges. He's on leave while his court case plays out, and the Braves still owe him nearly $30 million for the next four years under the deal he signed with Los Angeles, even with the Dodgers picking up part of the hefty contract.

For those in the midst of this rebuilding job - even those who are supposed to be a big part of the future - are having trouble seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

''When you're the middle of a hurricane,'' said rookie outfielder Mallex Smith, ''you're in the middle of a hurricane.''

The rebuilding job is being led by 67-year-old John Hart, who came out of semi-retirement when former general manager Frank Wren was fired, and unproven, first-year GM John Coppolella, who is only 36 years old. So far, their plan for turning things seems to have as many misses as hits.

But Coppolella isn't going anywhere.

The same can't be said for Gonzalez, who appears poised to take the fall for something that is largely beyond his control.

This isn't the Atlanta Braves we once knew.

Not even close.
