Nationals, Royals hook up
May 3, 2016

WASHINGTON NATIONALS (18-7) at KANSAS CITY ROYALS (13-12)

Sportsbook.ag Line: Washington +108, Kansas City -118, Total: 8.0

The World Series-champion Royals host the first-place Nationals in an interleague clash at Kauffman Stadium.

The first-place Nationals (18-7) shut out the Royals (13-12), 2-0, in the series opener on Monday night and will look to take the three-game set on Tuesday. After getting swept by the Phillies at home last week, Dusty Baker’s team has gotten back on track and rattled off four straight wins. The Royals, in third place in the American League Central and four-and-a-half games behind the first-place White Sox, have now dropped six of seven.

Pitching for the Nats will be RHP Tanner Roark (2-2, 2.03 ERA, 30 SO, 13 BB in 31 IP), who is coming off two consecutive seven-inning shutouts. He’ll be opposed by RHP Chris Young (1-4, 6.12 ERA, 26 SO, 10 BB, 6 HR in 25 IP). The 6’10” veteran has given up a home run in each of his five starts this season.

Both Baker and Royals manager Ned Yost have quality bullpens at their disposal. The Royals’ pen (2.33 ERA) has been slightly better than the Nats’ (2.48), but both units can protect leads. The Nationals have posted an impressive 10-3 record on the road, and the Royals have played solid baseball at Kauffman Stadium, going 8-4 in their home park.

2B Daniel Murphy (.382, 2 HR, 13 RBI, .439 OBP), in his first season with the Nationals after eight years with the rival Mets, is third in the National League in hitting. RF Bryce Harper (.271, 9 HR, 24 RBI, .385 OBP), widely believed to be the best player in the sport, has seen his average dip below .300, but is still tied for third in the NL in homers.

Catcher Wilson Ramos (.316, 2 HR, 8 RBI, .328 OBP) has provided punch from the catcher’s spot, though veterans Jayson Werth (.203, 4 HR, 13 RBI, .278 OBP) and Ryan Zimmerman (.234, 1 HR, 8 RBI, .310 OBP)—while still dangerous—are showing their age. Roark, who hasn’t allowed a run in three of his five starts this season, has never faced the Royals. Harper has crushed Young in his career, going 4-for-8 with a homer.

SS Danny Espinosa (.192, 2 HR, 9 RBI, .310 OBP) has also hit well against the 36-year-old, going 3-for-10 with a pair of walks. Ramos has homered both times in two career at-bats against Young—not bad—and Zimmerman is 5-for-20 against him with a blast and two doubles.

1B Eric Hosmer (.337, 4 HR, 9 RBI, .388 OBP) has been far and way the Royals’ best hitter in 2016. But aside from him, offensive production has been hard to come by, as evidenced by Kansas City’s 81 runs (T-13th in AL). Four regulars—Alcides Escobar (.234, 0 HR, 6 RBI, .265 OBP), Lorenzo Cain (.231, 2 HR, 9 RBI, .300 OBP), Kendrys Morales (.217, 2 HR, 8 RBI, .267 OBP) and Alex Gordon (.205, 2 HR, 5 RBI, .237 OBP)—are hitting below .240. The Royals are tied with the Indians and Red Sox for the least amount of home runs (21) in the American League.

The entire Royals roster has a combined seven career at-bats against Roark. Morales (1-for-3) has the most, with three. Young, who pitched in the NL from 2006-12, has faced Washington nine times. He has a 3-2 career record against the organization with a 2.75 ERA and a 1.024 WHIP. Young is 10-0 UNDER in home games after a loss over the last three seasons.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- MLB may move may 30-31 Pirates-Marlins series out of Puerto Rico due to the concerns over the Zika virus.

-- PG Spike Albrecht transfers from Michigan to Purdue, second year in row one of the Wolverines transferred to a Big 14 rival.

-- Texas led 1-0 in 9th inning at Toronto, but Justin Smoak homered in 9th inning, then won game with walk-off homer in 10th-- that doesn't happen very much.

-- Blue Jays were fifth bullpen in last 100 years to start a season 0-9; they got their first win last night.

-- Brooks Robinson holds MLB record, with 10 RBIs in games that ended 1-0. Ted Williams had nine.

-- NFL players are being warned about consuming meat produced in China, Mexico that potentially contains clenbuterol, which is banned under NFL's performance-enhancing substance policy.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) Three officials missed five calls in the last 0:13 of Thunder-Spurs game Monday in San Antonio- those refs need to be suspended. I mean, you can watch a winter of 5th grade CYO games and not see officiating that bad- NBA fans like to brag how he pro game is better than the college game, but the college game is better officiated.

12) Tampa Bay Bucs traded up to draft Florida State kicker Roberto Aguayo; one NFL exec called it, "the dumbest draft pick ever", but with touchbacks now being brought out to the 25-yard line, Aguayo's skill at pooching kickoffs could help Bucs trap opponents deep in their own territory. We'll see.

11) States with most players drafted last weekend: Texas 32, Florida 30, California 25, Georgia 16.

10) Dodgers are playing in St Pete against the Rays this week; LA has three players who were on the 2008 AL champ Rays-- Kazmir, Crawford, Howell. Tampa Bay has only one player left from that team, Evan Longoria.

9) Washington Nationals have scored in first inning in 15 of their 26 games, best %age of any big league team.

8) Last December 12, Astros traded Vincent Velasquez and four other players to the Phillies for reliever Ken Giles and a minor leaguer. Velasquez is 4-1, 1.44 for the Phils so far, while Giles is struggling (0-2, 8.18). Early returns favor the Phils by a lot.

7) I don't think felons should be allowed to vote; its a price you pay for getting caught committing a felony, which is a serious crime.

6) Prior to Tuesday's games, these players have come to the plate with the most men on base this season: Polanco (Pitt) 94, Rizzo (Cubs) 88, Heyward (Cubs) 86.

5) Players who knocked in the highest %age of baserunners this season:
Nick Markakis, 33.9%, Ben Paulsen/Bryce Harper 30%, Ryan Braun 27.8%.

4) Players who have had trouble knocking in baserunners this year:
Howie Kendrick 0-34, Logan Morrison, 0-26, Erick Aybar 1-61. Kendrick had four hits Tuesday, getting off the schneid with two RBI.

3) Former UNLV hoop coach Dave Rice is getting paid $300K a year over the next three years by his old team, which is why he signed on as an assistant coach at Nevada for only $75K. Coaches of Rice's stature generally make more than that.

2) Golfer Brian Stuard won his first PGA tournamnt in New Orleans Monday; for the week, he was 44-44 on putts of 10 feet or less. I couldn't make 44 of 44 putting into the clown's mouth at miniature golf, so good for him.

1) One of the growing debates in baseball is whether teams should shift and how much. I'm thinking it is generally helpful but it is being overdone because the numbers gurus have to justify their existence. With bases empty and a non-home run hitter up, you're giving up an easy base hit by shifting. Trey Calhoun did that against the Brewers in a game Monday, bunting for an easy hit because Milwaukee shifted. Shifting against home run hitters has very little downside.

Hottest team: Marlins (8-1 last nine)

In spite of losing last season’s NL batting champion Dee Gordon to an 80-game suspension, Miami has continued to roll by winning eight of its past nine games. The Marlins pulled off a four-game sweep of the Dodgers and grabbed two of three at Milwaukee on their recent road trip to improve to 12-12. Miami returned home and rallied past Arizona on Tuesday, 7-4 to grab only their third home victory of the season. Tonight, the Marlins turn to ace Jose Fernandez to keep their winning ways going as Miami owns a 24-4 record when the right-hander takes the mound at home.

Coldest team: Yankees (0-7 last seven)

The Bronx Bombers aren’t producing much from an offensive standpoint, as New York is tied for last in the American League in run scored. New York fell to 3-9 on the highway after scoring just one run in Tuesday’s loss at Baltimore. The Yankees have lost 14 of their past 18 games, including a 1-7 mark in their last eight attempts as an underdog. CC Sabathia looks to end New York’s woes tonight, but the southpaw has allowed three earned runs in each of his first four outings, while the Yankees have dropped five straight meetings with the Orioles.

Hottest pitcher: Colby Lewis, Rangers (2-0, 3.19 ERA)

Texas has won three of Lewis’ last four outings, as the veteran right-hander has given up three earned runs in his last two starts. The Rangers beat the Angels as a home underdog in Lewis’ previous outing, 4-2, as he tossed seven innings for the first time this season. Texas owns a 7-4 record in Lewis’ last 11 starts in the road underdog role since last June, including a victory as a +155 ‘dog last month at Seattle.

Coldest pitcher: Phil Hughes, Twins (1-4, 4.45 ERA)

Minnesota fell to 2-11 away from Target Field following Tuesday’s 6-4 defeat at Houston. Hughes tries to turn around the Twins’ road luck as the right-hander has picked up only one win in five starts this season. The offense hasn’t offered much support for Hughes by scoring two runs or less in all four of his losses, resulting in three ‘unders.’ Minnesota has lost each of Hughes’ last five road starts since last season, but the only positive note for the Twins tonight is they face an Astros’ squad that hasn’t won consecutive games this season.

Biggest UNDER run: Blue Jays (6-0 last six)

Even though Toronto won on a walk-off homer to stun Texas on Tuesday, the Blue Jays produced their 18th ‘under’ in 26 games this season. One of the biggest mysteries with this Toronto club is the lack of production at home, as the Blue Jays have plated a total of five runs in the past four contests at Rogers Center. The Jays have knocked out 33 home runs, which ranks fourth in the American League, led by reigning MVP Josh Donaldson, who has hit nine, tied with Seattle’s Robinson Cano for the most in the AL.

Biggest OVER run: Brewers (6-0 last six)

Milwaukee owns the best ‘over’ record at home this season, by posting an 11-4 mark at Miller Park following Tuesday’s comeback victory over the Angels, 5-4. The Brewers have eclipsed the ‘over’ in seven of the last eight home contests, while scoring at least five runs six times in this span. Milwaukee has drawn a heavy interleague schedule so far, going 7-1-1 to the ‘over’ in nine games against American League foes, as the Brewers wrap up their series with the Angels this afternoon.

Matchup to watch: Tigers vs. Indians

Cleveland has owned Detroit this season by winning each of the first four meetings, including Tuesday’s 7-3 home victory as a -125 favorite. The Indians snapped a three-game losing streak, while ending Detroit’s five-game winning streak as the Tigers have scored just eight runs in the four losses to the Tribe. The Cy Young season that Corey Kluber put together in 2014 seems like a memory as the right-hander owns a 10-19 record in his last 29 decisions, including a 1-3 mark in 2016. However, Kluber’s only victory this season came against Detroit in his best outing, allowing two hits and one earned run in eight innings of work in a 10-1 victory on April 23.

Betcha didn’t know:
The Phillies own an 8-8 record in Adam Morgan’s 16 career starts since June 2015. However, the southpaw beat the Cardinals in his Major League debut, 9-2 as a +170 home underdog, while seven of Philadelphia’s eight victories with Morgan on the mound have come as a ‘dog of +160 or higher.

Biggest public favorite: Mets (-215) vs. Braves

Biggest public underdog: Dodgers (+145) at Rays

Biggest line move: Astros (-130 to -150) vs. Twins

LEADING OFF: Trout shatters slump; King Felix aims for top
May 4, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

HEAVENLY HITTING

Remember when Mike Trout opened the season with a 5-for-27 slump, hitting an un-MVP like .185? Well, the Los Angeles Angels slugger has been on a tear ever since, hitting .386 over his next 18 games. The Angels wrap up a three-game interleague series on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

KING FELIX

RHP Felix Hernandez (2-2, 1.38) starts against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday looking for career win No. 146, which would make him the winningest pitcher in Mariners history. He's 11-3 with a 2.67 ERA in 22 starts at the Coliseum. LHP Sean Manaea is the opposing pitcher. He's making his second career start.

HOME COOKING

Marlins RHP Jose Fernandez (2-2, 4.08) is scheduled to start Wednesday against Arizona Diamondbacks righty Rubby De La Rosa (3-3, 4.18), who has won his past three starts. Fernandez has an 18-1 record at Marlins Park.

ROLLING MATZ

Mets rookie Steven Matz (3-1, 3.86 ERA) tries to win his fourth straight start in a matinee against Atlanta. After a dreadful performance during his first outing of the season, the left-hander has a 0.93 ERA and 21 strikeouts over 19 1/3 innings in his past three. Matz has seven major league wins, most by any Mets pitcher through his first 10 regular-season games. Two of those victories have come against the Braves. Jhoulys Chacin (1-1, 3.27) starts the series finale for Atlanta.

PERFECT PEAVY

San Francisco's Jake Peavy tries to stay perfect against the Reds in the final game of their series. Peavy is 7-0 career against Cincinnati in 12 starts with a 2.38 ERA. His team has won 11 of his 12 starts against the Reds.

CC SEES ORANGE

CC Sabathia hopes history will be on his side in a start at Baltimore. Not recent history, though. The big left-hander is 18-7 lifetime against the Orioles, and his 115 strikeouts are most ever by a visiting pitcher at Camden Yards. But Sabathia is winless in his last eight starts in Baltimore, allowing exactly four runs in seven of those games - including each of the last five.

3B Sandoval has season-ending surgery
May 3, 2016

CHICAGO (AP) Pablo Sandoval will miss the rest of the season.

The Boston Red Sox third baseman had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder on Tuesday. The Red Sox called the surgery a success but said he will miss the rest of the season.

They said he is expected to make a full recovery in time for the 2017 season.

Sandoval is in his second season of a $95 million, five-year contract. In his first season with Boston, he posted career-lows with a .245 average, 10 homers and 47 RBIs. He reported to spring training visibly overweight, then lost his starting job to Travis Shaw.
