13) Kansas 76, Miami 50:
— Most one-sided Elite 8 game since 1992, when Cincinnati beat Memphis 88-57.
— Miami actually led 35-29 at halftime.
— Kansas is only #1-seed to make the Final Four (or Elite 8)

12) North Carolina 69, Saint Peter’s 49:
— Clock struck midnight for Peacocks, but what a great run for them.
— Tar Heels led 9-0 early, were up 38-19 at halftime.
— North Carolina-Duke renew their rivalry in national semifinal.

11) There are already 800+ names in the college basketball transfer portal; there are 358 Division I teams, so that is 2.2 players per team that are bolting to greener pastures, and there will probably be a lot more to come.

10) Gonzaga/Oklahoma share an unenviable record; they’ve both been a #1-seed five times, but haven’t won a national title yet. DePaul/Illinois have been #1-seeds four times each, without winning it all.

9) Took a walk on the Strip today, which is unlike me; stopped in sportsbooks at Bellagio and Caeser’s Palace. It was freakin’ hot out, but walking on the Strip is always uniquely fun.

Lady in Bellagio wanted my autograph; she thought I was Larry David. It is possible that she had been drinking. Politely explained to her that I was neither funny, rich or famous, although I am old and bald; took her five minutes to believe me.

At Caeser’s, they were charging people to sit in the sportsbook, so I wasn’t there long.

— New Mexico State hired Greg Heiar, who won a national title in JC ball this year; he had previously been an assistant for Gregg Marshall/Will Wade.

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) Had an interesting experience Wednesday night, while watching the Golden State-Phoenix game in the Aria sportsbook. Sat next to two Asian guys and for two hours, I listened to them have a conversation in a foreign language, no idea which one.

I could tell they were rooting for the Suns, but they were mostly quiet, which is more than could be said for couple of other guys who appeared during the second half— they were right out of a Dumb and Dumber movie, screaming on every possession as if their life depended on it.

This was the first time in all my visits here that I saw guys acting like morons while sweating out a bet (maybe they weren’t acting). End of the game, the loud guys won, I think the quiet guys lost by a half-point.

12) Bruce Arians stepped down as coach of Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was replaced immediately by Todd Bowles, who used to coach the Jets. Arians will move on to the Tampa Bay front office.

It is unclear if Tom Brady’s un-retirement had a hand in all this; there had been rumors that Arians and Brady didn’t always get along so well.

11) The inevitable happened in New Jersey; Shaheen Holloway leaves Saint Peter’s to become the new coach at Seton Hall, his alma mater.

10) Fresno State-Coastal Carolina game, championship tilt of the Basketball Classic, was postponed until Friday afternoon; Fresno’s team had travel problems getting to the east coast Wednesday.

9) USFL kicks off in a couple weeks; they’re going to experiment with some rule changes:

— Three options for PAT’s:
a) traditional kick for one point
b) 2-point play from 2-yard line
c) 3-point play from 10-yard line
— Kickoffs will be from 25-yard line, not 35.
— Onside kicks:
a) traditional onside kick
b) run 4th-and-12 play from your 33-yard line
— In last 2:00 of half, clock stops after a first down.

The whole league is taking place in Birmingham; we’ll see how it goes.

8) New Jersey Generals’ coach is Mike Riley, who will be coaching in his fifth pro league; he also coached Oregon State in college. This guy could write quite a book:

5) Chicago Cubs used 69 different players last year, 15 of which made their MLB debut; they will be interesting to follow this summer, a big market team that openly went in the tank last season. Will they try harder to win this year?

4) Injured list for pitchers goes back to 15 days this season, to avoid roster manipulation; for position players, injured list stays at 10 days.

3) Dodgers dealt 1B/OF Matt Beaty to division rival San Diego for a minor leaguer; little unusual that division rivals make a deal like that.
