I really appreciate all the information you post every day and the effort it takes to do this, THANK YOU! If you have time could you please explain the Tempo rating numbers and what they mean, I know it has to do with the amount of possession in regulation time but I don’t know what the numbers mean, is higher or lower better, thank you for your time. Mikey
Hope this is OK to answer…lots of posts so easy to miss things is answered or missed. But this may help. Via KenPom

Tempo/Pace – The number of possessions per 40 minutes. Possessions is not an official NCAA statistic, so it must be estimated. The formula I am using is:

Possessions = FGA-OR+TO+.42*FTA (I use .475 for the free throw mulitplier now.)

This is a pretty standard computation that accounts for when possession is lost by a team. The only bit of uncertainty is the free throw portion, because we don’t always know how a team got to the line. If they are shooting two, then the two FTAs account for one possession. But if they go to the line for one after making a shot, then the one FTA has no possession attached to it, because the previous FGA accounts for it.

The .42 multiplier estimates how many FTAs equal one possession. It has to be slightly less than one half. John Hollinger in Pro Basketball Prospectus uses .44. Dean Oliver in Basketball on Paper and other work uses .40. I’m splitting the difference. The difference between .4 and .44 means about a 1% change in the efficiency/tempo calculations.

I do a tempo calculation for each team in a game, average those two numbers and apply it to each team for the game, since each team’s total possessions should be nearly equal. Then I average the tempo for every team’s games-to-date to come up with the figures shown.

+2800— TCU
+3300— Iowa State
+5000— Kansas State

Justin Su’a

Saturday’s quiz

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday

13) OVC tournament:
Murray State 71, Morehead State 67:
— First ticket to March Madness was punched here.
— Murray State has won 20 in a row; last loss was 71-58 at Auburn December 22.
— Morehead had an 18-2 run early in game; they were only 8-18 on foul line.

12) ACC:
— North Carolina 94, Duke 81— All five UNC starters played the whole second half, where the Tar Heels outscored Duke 55-40.
— Virginia 71, Louisville 61— Lot of good job openings this spring; is Louisville the best one?
— With Roy Williams/Coach K retired, the NC State job is a lot more attractive now.

ESPN should be embarrassed by the preferential treatment they give Duke basketball. It is understood that Mike Krzyzewski is the 2nd-best college coach ever (see Wooden, John), but not lot was said when Roy Williams retired and he was a great coach, too.

This past week, ESPN was basically a week-long infomercial for Duke; few years ago, they hired Coach K’s son-in-law as a game analyst. Enough already.

11) SEC:
— LSU 80, Alabama 77 OT— LSU actually fouled on purpose while up 2 with 0:08 left in regulation; their game management skills are not strong.
— Tennessee 78, Arkansas 74— Vols led by 24 in first half, Razorbacks get back-door cover.
— Auburn is top-seed in SEC tourney; semi-finals should be excellent.
— Teams 5-9 in SEC standings were all 9-9 in league play.

Tennessee big man John Fulkerson has played for the Vols for six years; during that time, he’s had 45 different teammates. Forty-five.

10) Sun Belt tournament:
— Louisiana 79, Texas State 72— Top-seed Bobcats get sent home.
— Underdogs are 7-1 ATS so far in this tournament.

9) Big X:
— Kansas 70, Texas 63, OT— If you had Texas +6.5, better days are ahead.
— Oklahoma State 52, Texas Tech 51— OSU is on probation; this was their last game.
— Texas-TCU will be a terrific 4-5 game in Kansas City next week.

8) Pac-12:
— UCLA 75, USC 68— Bruins won six of their last seven games.
— Arizona State 65, Stanford 56— Sun Devils won seven of last eight games.
— Arizona won Pac-12 by three games; will they be a #1-seed in NCAA’s?

7) Missouri Valley tournament:
— Loyola 66, Northern Iowa 43— Ramblers allowed 50-43 points last two days.
— Drake 79, Missouri State 78 OT— Drake was down 5 with 2:09 left in regulation.

6) Big East:
— Seton Hall 65, Creighton 60— Pirates won eight of last ten games.
— Xavier 97, Georgetown 75— Hoyas finish 0-18 in Big East play.
— Providence is #1 seed in Big East tournament next week.

5) MAAC
— Rick Pitino’s Iona squad wins the league by three games, but now they have to win the MAAC tournament to go dancing. No pressure.
— Weird league; two 7-13 teams tied for last place, which is lot of wins for a last-place team.
— Only four 11 teams had winning records in conference play.

4) Conference USA:
— UTEP 70, North Texas 68— UNT’s 15-game win streak comes to an end.
— Mean Green is still top seed for the conference tournament.

3) Big South tournament:
— Longwood 79, SC Upstate 70— Top-seed Longwood is the #1 seed; they were down 16 in this game, after winning in overtime Friday.
— Longwood-Winthrop is the conference final Sunday.

When I was in college a long time ago, 40+ years ago, I was student manager of our basketball team, a very good Division III team. We were often in the top 25 nationally; at the same time. Longwood made the D-III Final Four one year, shortly after starting their program.

Their coach was a guy named Ron Bash, who later left coaching and became a basketball tipster. I am told he was quite a character; he was a good coach, too. Longwood inducted him into their Hall of Fame a few years ago.

2) Mountain West:
— Wyoming 68, Fresno State 64, OT— Cowboys blew 10-point lead with 7:04 left.
— San Diego State 79, Nevada 78— Aztecs led by 18 with 12:03 left.
— Boise State is #1 seed for next week’s Mountain West tourney.

1) Houston Baptist 149, McNeese State 144, 4OTs:
— HBU was 50-65 on foul line, McNeese 31-45.
— McNeese led by six in second OT.
— Darius Lee scored 57 points for HBU; he was 20-27 on foul line
— McNeese had eight players score in double figures.

+190— Purdue
+320— Illinois
+460— Iowa
+700— Wisconsin
+1200— Ohio State
+1700— Michigan
+2500— Indiana, Michigan State

Quote of the Day
“A little song, a little dance…….a little seltzer down your pants.”
Chuckles the Clown

What was the butler’s name in the old TV show, The Addams Family?

Sunday’s quiz
NC State ended UCLA’s streak of seven consecutive national titles in 1974.

Saturday’s quiz
Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr was born in Lebanon; his father was president of the American University in Beirut, before he was assassinated in 1984.

************************************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend

13) Welcome to my favorite two weeks of the year, Champ Week and then the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Ton of basketball going to be played; this will be our first normal March Madness in three years. Let’s enjoy it.

There is also supposed to be baseball going on, exhibition games that make us feel warmer up here in the northeast, but that ain’t happening yet. Too bad.

12) Loyola 64, Drake 58:
— Ramblers are in NCAA’s for third time in last four tournaments.
— Coach Drew Valentine is youngest (30) D-I coach in America.
— This was Loyola’s last game in the MVC; they move on to the A-14 next year.

11) Longwood 79, Winthrop 58:
— This is Longwood’s 18th year in D-I, only their second winning season,
— Lancers made the D-III Final Four back in 1980.
— This year, Longwood lost by 33 to Iowa, by 8 to Georgetown; they went 18-1 in their league.

10) NBA commish Adam Silver is a Duke alum; he was at the Duke-UNC game Saturday night. They show him on TV and I’m like, “Guy next to him looks a lot like Jerry Seinfeld”

Turns out it actually was Jerry Seinfeld; stands at Duke looked like a freakin’ Laker game, lot of celebrities. Turns out Seinfeld’s son is a freshman at Duke.

9) With rumors that Troy Aikman is jumping from FOX to ESPN’s Monday Night Football, Brian Griese will leave the TV booth and be the 49ers’ QB coach next season.

8) Florida Gulf Coast went 21-11 this season, but they fired their coach after four seasons of not making the NCAA Tournament. The guy went 30-27 in conference play, gets told to take a hike. Florida Gulf Coast cares about their basketball.

Then there is Georgetown, which just went 0-19 in the Big East; sounds like Patrick Ewing will be back on the Hoyas’ sideline next year. Hmmmm…..

In five years under Ewing, Georgetown is 26-60 in Big East play; they did win the conference tournament last year, making the NCAA’s for first time in six years- they lost to Colorado in the first round, 96-73. Ewing was a great player, might not be that good a coach, but he is the best player in Georgetown history.

7) Jacksonville 54, Jacksonville State 51:
— Second round game in the Atlantic Sun tournament.
— Jacksonville is in Florida, Jacksonville State is in Alabama.

Go figure.

6) Nebraska 74, Wisconsin 73:
— Ten days ago, Nebraska was 1-16 in conference play; since then, they’ve won three games in a row, all as double-digit underdogs.
— Wisconsin star Davis played only 12:00, injured by a flagrant foul.

5) Sun Belt tournament:
— Louisiana 66, Troy State 57— Cajuns never trailed, win for third day in a row.
— Georgia State 71, Appalachian State 66— Panthers have won nine games in a row; they’ll be playing for third straight day Monday night.

4) Arizona State QB Jayden Daniels has committed to LSU, as Brian Kelly bolsters his roster via the transfer portal. Daniels played three years at ASU; Sun Devils lost both coordinators this winter, and the NCAA is lurking around the ASU program.

3) When San Diego State-Fresno State play basketball, things get awkward for Fresno coach Justin Hutson; his wife Stacie is the women’s basketball coach at San Diego State. Maybe it is more awkward for her than him.

2) Was stunned to see that when the baseball owners made their proposal to the players’ union last Monday, four owners voted against that offer, but the owners passed it anyway. What got me was that one of the four owners who voted against it was Arte Moreno, the Angels’ owner.

Angels are a big market team: Trout, Ohtani, Rendon; they’re shouting distance from LA and draw very well. If a big market owner like Moreno is a hard liner, we might not see baseball for a while, maybe May at the earliest.

1) In 1985, Phillies’ 3B Mike Schmidt made $2,130,000; he was the highest-paid player in the big leagues that year. Last fall, Juan Soto turned down a 13-year, $360M deal.

Someone is going to have to compromise in baseball’s labor dispute; I’m thinking it should be the players. If you turn down $360M for 13 years, something is screwed up.
