Friday’s 6-pack:

NBA scoring leaders:
29.5— Kevin Durant, Bkln
27.4— Steph Curry, GSt
26.7— Paul George, LAC
26.6— Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milw
26.5— Ja Morant, Mem
26.0— DeMar DeRozan, Chi

Quote of the Day
“I’m against it (pineapple on pizza). I’m staunchly opposed. It’s my mom’s favorite type of pizza — ham and pineapple — and I love pineapple, too.”
Mike Leach

Friday’s quiz
Who was coach of the Miami Dolphins last time they won a playoff game?

Thursday’s quiz
Before moving to Oakland in 1968, A’s played in Kansas City; before that, Philadelphia.

Wednesday’s quiz
Florida Gators won NCAA Tournament in 2006 and 2007, last time a college basketball team won consecutive national titles.

*****************************

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with weekend here, and NBA trends

13) Dolphins 22, Ravens 10:
— This was Ravens’ first road game since October 3rd.
— Baltimore punted eight times in this game.
— Ravens kicked FG on first drive, didn’t score again until 4:16 was left.
— Baltimore trailed at halftime in four of last five games.
— Last four games, opponents are 15-52 on third down

— Miami allowed 16-9-10 points in their wins.
— Dolphins scored defensive TD to make score 15-3.
— QB Brissett got hurt in 3rd quarter, Tagovailoa finished up.
— Last six years, Miami is 15-10-1 ATS as home underdogs.
— Dolphins held Baltimore to 94 rushing yards.

12) Aaron Rodgers got fined $14,650 by the NFL for mostly ignoring the COVID protocols when he wasn’t vaccinated; I’m not here to talk about that, I’m just wondering how they came up with that amount. Where does $14,650 come from? Why not just $15,000? $14,500?

11) I’ve said many times that as a Rams’ fan, I trust Sean McVay/Les Snead to do the right stuff, so I don’t stress out over decisions they make. I’ll stick with that today. I’ll just say this:

— Rams’ Super Bowl odds before signing Odell Beckham: 8-1
— Rams’ Super Bowl odds after signing Odell Beckham: 8-1

10) Carolina Panthers signed Cam Newton/Matt Barkley this week; unsure which of their three QB’s will start this week in Arizona.

Newton played nine years for Carolina, lead them to Super Bowl six years ago. He played for the Patriots last year, was released this summer.

9) Watched Heat-Lakers game Wednesday, good ballgame. Jeff Van Gundy is an excellent NBA analyst- so is his brother Stan.

Many moons ago, November 1980, I was student manager of our college team at Albany- the Great Danes. We were Division III and we had a strong team. The higher level of Division III was very good basketball. This was so long ago, ESPN had just signed on the airwaves.

We’re playing in a tournament at Brockport State in western NY, near Rochester. Coach for the host team was a short guy wearing a neck brace— he had been in a car accident. He had also been a junior college coach in California, now he was in Brockport, a decided downgrade in weather.

Coach’s name was Bill Van Gundy, father of Jeff/Stan. What are the odds that the two sons of a Division III coach in western NY would both wind up being NBA coaches, and TV stars?

8) Connecticut Huskies hired Jim Mora Jr to handle the big job of rebuilding their horrendous football program. UConn was underdog to an Ivy League team this year; they’re 0-7 vs I-A teams, 1-1 vs I-AA teams- they beat Yale. Jim Mora Jr has a lot of work to do.

Mora was 46-30 in six years at UCLA, 29-24 in Pac-12 games, 2-2 in bowls. He was 32-34 in four years as an NFL head coach, with Falcons/Seahawks.

7) Mike White will start at QB for the Jets this week against Buffalo. Joe Flacco will be his backup; Josh Johnson threw for 317 yards last week and gets demoted to 4th-string.

6) Underdogs are 78-56-1 ATS in the NFL so far this season; last year at this time, underdogs were…….. 77-56 ATS.

5) Astros’ OF Jake Meyers had surgery for a torn labrum, isn’t expected to be ready for the start of next season. Meyers hit .260 in 49 games for Houston this season.

4) John Beilein has been a highly successful college basketball coach, winning 754 games; he tried his hand at the NBA, but that didn’t go too well in Cleveland. Now, at age 68, Beilein is an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons— first time in his life he’s been an assistant coach.

3) Good rule change in the NFL; the replay official can chime in and overrule an obviously wrong call, saving teams from using a challenge, while keeping the game going.

2) Cal-Riverside 66, Arizona State 65— Kid on Riverside drained a 65-footer at the buzzer to five the Highlanders (+8.5) one of the best wins in their program’s D-I history.

1) Pitt 30, North Carolina 23 OT:
— Pitt led 23-7 at halftime, didn’t score in second half.
— UNC kicked 20-yard FG with 0:57 left to force OT
— Carolina had 12 penalties for 104 yards; Pitt 6 for 55.
— Tar Heels (+6.5) were obviously a bad beat.

Saturday’s 6-pack:

Six highest-paid players in NBA:
$45,780,966— Steph Curry, Warriors
$44,310,840— John Wall, Rockets
$44,211,146— Russell Westbrook, Lakers
$43,848,000— James Harden, Nets
$43,750,000— Damian Lillard, Trailblazers
$41,180,544— Lebron James, Lakers

Quote of the Day
“We (Bulls) won because we played team basketball, which hadn’t been the case my first two seasons, when Doug Collins was our coach. That’s what was special about playing for the Bulls: the camaraderie we established with one another, not that we felt blessed to be on the same team with the immortal Michael Jordan.”
Scottie Pippen

Saturday’s quiz
In the movie The Hangover, Sid lets his son-in-law drive his favorite car to Las Vegas for his bachelor party. What kind of car was it?

Friday’s quiz
Dave Wannstedt was coach of the Miami Dolphins last time they won a playoff game- they beat the Colts 23-17 in the 2000 playoffs.

Thursday’s quiz
Before moving to Oakland in 1968, A’s played in Kansas City; before that, Philadelphia.

****************************

Saturday’s Den: Happy Felix Unger Day!!!

13) “On November 13, Felix Unger was asked to leave his place of residence. That request came from his wife……..”

When I was a kid, The Odd Couple was one of my favorite TV shows; that is how the show started every week, with Tony Randall’s character Felix sadly leaving his home, and showing up at the door of his friend, sportswriter Oscar Madison (Jack Klugman), needing a place to live.

It was a great TV show, very funny. If you find The Odd Couple on TV somewhere, it is well worth your time.

Today is November 13; happy Felix Unger Day!!!

12) West Virginia 74, Pitt 59:
— 902nd career win for Bob Huggins, tying Bob Knight for 5th on all-time list.
— How is Huggins not in the college basketball Hall of Fame?
— 24 NCAA tournaments, two Final Fours, four Elite 8’s, nine Sweet 16’s. All in all, 33-24 in NCAA Tournament games. He is a Hall of Famer, for sure.

11) Furman 80, Louisville 72 (OT):
— Furman (+9) made 12-28 on arc, Louisville 7-29.
— Paladins start four seniors; this is a great win for them.
— Louisville coach Mack is suspended for first few games, for off-court stuff.

10) Oakland (+16.5) 56, Oklahoma State 55
— Oakland lost by 27 to West Virginia Tuesday.
— Oakland played 8 guys, including five freshmen, one senior.
— Oklahoma State was only 6-12 on foul line.

9) North Carolina 94, Brown 87— Is this a red flag for the Tar Heels? Brown hadn’t played a Division I game in over 600 days;

8) UCLA 86, Villanova 77, OT
— Villanova’s 7th man played only 7:00- they’re not deep.
— Villanova led by 10 with 9:24 left.
— Wildcats lost despite making 11-24 on the arc.

— UCLA outrebounded Villanova 46-32.
— Bruins shot 52.5% inside arc; Villanova, 38.6%.
— High-level game for November 12.

7) When Cal-Riverside upset Arizona State Thursday night, they also banked an $85,000 check from the Sun Devils, what they call “a guarantee game”. If you’re paying a team $85,000 to show up and play, they’re not supposed to beat you.

6) NC-Greensboro 70, Northern Kentucky 69 OT
— UNCG led by 10 points at halftime.
— UNCG trailed by 7 with 7:54 left.
— Northern Kentucky was 10-33 on arc, 13-32 inside arc.

5) Eastern Michigan 103, Illinois State 98, 2OT:
— Illinois State led by 16 late in first half.
— EMU was 32-43 on foul line, ISU 23-28.
— Illinois State turned ball over 22 times (-7).

4) Denver Broncos’ offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur tested positive for COVID, won’t be calling plays Sunday, when Denver hosts the Eagles. Former Alabama coach Mike Shula is expected to be the Broncos’ play caller.

3) Brent Strom quit as pitching coach of the Astros couple weeks ago, signed on with the Diamondbacks Friday; lot of people thought Strom was retiring. Back in the 60’s, Strom was the second person to have Tommy John Surgery on his elbow- he pitched five years in the majors, for three different teams.

2) Lefty hurler Andrew Heaney signed a one-year, $8.5M deal with the Dodgers. Heaney was 8-9, 5.83 in 23 starts this past year, but the Dodgers signed him up.

1) Cincinnati 45, South Florida 28— Bearcats are now 0-4 ATS in last four games; unsure if it matters to pollsters, but it can’t help much. Cincinnati led 31-7 early in second half- they outgained USF 506-346, but turned ball over three times. USF had four turnovers.

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Baylor 27, Oklahoma 14:

Good news for Baylor: They don’t beat Oklahoma very often. Bears are 8-2 this season.

Bad news for Baylor: LSU, USC and (probably) Florida have head coach openings; all three will come after Baylor coach Aranda with their checkbooks wide open.

12) Kansas (+31) 57, Texas 56 OT:
— Texas coach Steve Sarkisian makes $5,450,000 a year; this won’t go over well.
— Longhorns are 4-6, losing their last five games.
— Kansas ran for 218 yards, converted 11-17 on third down.
— Kansas coach Leipold won six national titles in D-III; he has to be a helluva coach, to win that much at any level.

11) Wake Forest 45, NC State 42:
— Wake Forest improves to 9-1, 6-0 in ACC games.
— When Wake lost to North Carolina last week, it wasn’t a conference game.
— Demon Deacons allowed 42+ points in three of last four games.
— Wolfpack had 13 penalties for 119 yards, Wake 5 for 50.

10) Texas Tech 41, Iowa State 38— Jonathan Garibay walked it off with a 62-yard FG; Red Raiders were 12-point home underdogs. Hell of a kick.

Iowa State called timeout before the kick to put a kid back under the goalposts, to return the kick when it was short, but Garibay drilled it and that was that.

9) Florida 70, Samford 52:
— I-AA Samford led this game 42-35 at halftime.
— Most points a I-AA team ever scored against a I-A team.
— penalties: Florida 12-94 yards; Samford 3-30

— At one point, Old Dominion led this game 4-3.
— Monarchs scored two first half safeties (sack/intentional grounding).

3) Arkansas 16, LSU 13:
— Both teams scored only one TD.
— Arkansas gained only 281 yards, converted 3-16 on third down.
— Razorbacks are 7-3, LSU 4-6. Go figure.

2) NFL news:
— Ben Roethlisberger (COVID protocols) is out for Pittsburgh.
— Rams WR Robert Woods tore his ACL, is out for the year.

1) Bad Beat of the Week? Late Friday night, Wyoming (+13.5) threw a 74-yard TD pass with 0:04 left. If you had Wyoming, you went to bed smiling; if not, the gambling gods owe you one.
