3 keys to victory for Calgary, Winnipeg in Week 7

WINNIPEG – The Calgary Stampeders will try to create some separation atop the West Division standings when they travel to Winnipeg to take on the Blue Bombers on Friday Night Football.

Calgary is off to a 4-1 start, which includes a 37-16 win over Winnipeg in Week 5. Last week, they took down Saskatchewan, 24-10, on the road.

Winnipeg was on a bye in Week 6.

Here’s three keys to victory for both teams ahead of Friday’s game, which can be watched on TSN and RDS2 in Canada, CFL+ internationally and on CBSSN in the U.S.

CALGARY STAMPEDERS

1. DAMIEN ALFORD

Calgary was hoping they had a star when they selected Damien Alford with the first overall pick in the 2025 Canadian Football League draft, and he’s beginning to show exactly what he’s capable of. After 156 receiving yards and two touchdowns against the Riders, quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. should feel good about turning his way.

2. DEFENCE

The Stampeders and Blue Bombers are the only two teams that have yet to allow 100 points this season. Keeping opposing offences out of the end zone has been a collective effort, with defensive linemen Clarence Hicks and Jaylon Hutchings standing out up front and Adrian Greene and Derrick Moncrief holding it down in the secondary. Their hands will be full this week going up against quarterback Zach Collaros and running back Brady Oliveira.

3. STAYING DISCIPLINED

Sometimes, it’s just as important not to beat yourself up. The Stampeders have taken the fewest penalties (5.4), resulting in the second-fewest free yards (49.6) per game heading into this week’s action. Facing a team with as much talent as the Bombers, discipline and not surrendering extra opportunities will be important.

WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS

1. CONTROLLING THE CLOCK

The Blue Bombers feel confident when the ball is in quarterback Zach Collaros’ hands, and he’s had it a lot as they lead the league in time of possession. Collaros has also helped them to a touchdown on 20 per cent of their drives, a mark that’s third best in the league.

2. SECONDARY SHUTTING IT DOWN

Adams Jr. is coming off a game in which he completed 28-of-36 passes for 428 yards, but he was held to 222 yards in his first meeting with the Bombers. It will be a game of adjustments for both sides, with defensive backs Marquise Bridges and Jamal Parker Jr. trying to keep the pivot’s options under tight coverage.

3. TOUCHES FOR OLIVEIRA

Brady Oliveira is going to get his fair share of looks this week as he continues to find his form after an early-season injury. Back in their Week 5 matchup, he amassed 61 yards on 13 carries.

NEED TO KNOW

  • Calgary can take over sole possession of first in the West Division with a win.
  • With a victory, Winnipeg can make it a three-way tie atop the division with Calgary and Saskatchewan.
  • Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET and can be watched on TSN and RDS2 in Canada, CFL+ internationally and on CBSSN in the U.S.

Calgary Stampeders @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The Calgary Stampeders have surged to the top of the CFL power ratings with a 4-1 record after beating the previously undefeated Saskatchewan Roughriders 24-10 as 6.5-point underdogs last week at Mosaic Stadium.

However, this could be a letdown spot for the Stamps, who are facing a Winnipeg Blue Bombers squad fresh off a bye. The Bombers are playing at home, where they've gone an incredible 43-6 straight up and 34-15 against the spread since 2019.

This is also a revenge spot for Winnipeg, which had a perfect 3-0 record before losing at McMahon Stadium in Week 5. Winnipeg outgained Calgary 408-334 in that contest and had a 29-16 edge in first downs with four more minutes of possession.

However, the Bombers lost the turnover battle and had a pair of interceptions returned for touchdowns, which turned the tide in Calgary's favor. This Winnipeg squad is simply too experienced and well-coached to put together another sloppy performance like that.

Expect a bounce-back performance from two-time CFL MOP Zach Collaros and back him to lead Winnipeg to a win and cover here.

The Bombers allowed 37 points to Calgary in Week 5, but that was largely due to uncharacteristic turnovers. Winnipeg has allowed the second-fewest offensive touchdowns in the CFL (8) while also ranking second in opponent pass efficiency (86.3).

The Stamps are the only team in the league to allow fewer offensive touchdowns than the Bombers (5). Their defense also leads the CFL in points per game allowed (18.2), yards allowed per pass attempt (6.88), and big plays allowed (7)

In addition, Calgary's WR corps is decimated by injuries, while Winnipeg will likely be missing stud wideout Dalton Schoen and All-Star LT Stanley Bryant.

And this is Coach Locks, the locker room king, telling you this landscape, I had to choose between paying young players who were coming in or reward the older players that have been through the fire, three bowl wins, and I tried to do both with limited resources. And that’s what you get: a locker room with the haves and have-nots.”

Prediction Time: CFL.ca writers’ Week 8 picks

TORONTO — Two members of the CFL.ca pick makers club had a perfect week in Week 7.

Kristina Costabile and Pat Steinberg went 4-0, as Kristina moved out of the basement of the group and Pat took over as the top dog.

Will anyone have the same fate in Week 8?

Find out below as the CFL.ca writers lock in the selections on CFL Pick ‘Em presented by Old Dutch.

MONTREAL AT CALGARY

MONTREAL AT CALGARY

Thursday, July 24
9:00 p.m. ET
TSN/RDS/CBSSN/CFL+

The Calgary Stampeders took down the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for the second time in three weeks in Week 7. There was a win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in between those two victories and with all three of those Ws, the Stamps have now firmly solidified themselves as the top team in the CFL. Vernon Adams Jr. and co. now host the Montreal Alouettes, who will be without their starting quarterback, Davis Alexander, once again. With that in mind, all of the pick makers are taking the red hot Red and White squad.
WRITERS’ PICK: 100% Calgary

EDMONTON AT SASKATCHEWAN

Friday, July 25
9:00 p.m. ET
TSN/CFL+

Edmonton returns from a bye looking to get their second win of the season and keep pace with the rest of the West Division. Remember, it’s still early in the season and the Elks are just two games behind BC and Winnipeg. As of this writing, there’s no clear answer as to who will start for the Elks under centre with both Tre Ford and Cody Fajardo splitting first team reps. Saskatchewan, on the other hand, won their fifth game of the season last week in BC, with Trevor Harris having one of the best outings of his season. Matt Cauz is the only one thinking that Edmonton’s week of rest will help them take down the Riders.
WRITERS’ PICK: 80% Saskatchewan

WINNIPEG AT TORONTO

Saturday, July 26
7:00 p.m. ET
TSN/CTV/CBSSN/CFL+

All eyes will be on the QBs in this matchup on Saturday night. Chad Kelly was practicing on Tuesday but Nick Arbuckle was the one who took first team reps for the Argos. Who starts for the Double Blue will be determined later on in the week. For Winnipeg, Zach Collaros left last week’s game with an injury, but was in full gear and was practicing on Tuesday morning. Regardless of the pivot starting for either club, all of the writers are still thinking the Bombers will win in the 111th Grey Cup rematch.
WRITERS’ PICK: 100% Winnipeg

HAMILTON AT BC

Sunday, July 27
7:00 p.m. ET
TSN/CFL+

Don’t look now but the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are streaking. Bo Levi Mitchell and co. won their fourth game in a row last week, all coming against East Division opponents. Now the Tabbies face their first Western foe since Week 2 with a long road trip to the west coast to meet the Lions. BC, on the other hand, is coming off a loss at home to the Riders and will want to show their fan base just what they’re capable of doing with a win. Pat Steinberg is the lone writer who thinks Nathan Rourke and co. will do just that.
WRITERS’ PICK: 80% Hamilton

Thursday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

— Green Bay Packers are a publicly-owned team, so they divulge their earnings every year; this past year, the Packers and their 539,529 stockholders (lot of stockholders) banked a check from the NFL worth $432.6M, which means since every team got one of those, the league’s total revenue was roughly $13B, that’s BILLION, with a B.
Which is how they can afford to pay Roger Goodell $30 or $40M a year; he is the captain that keeps the golden yacht afloat.
