LEADING OFF: Hudson follows no-hitter; AL Central showdown

June 10, 2015

A look at what's happening all around the major leagues today:

---

YOUR TURN

Tim Hudson takes a shot at joining the no-hit club in San Francisco. Hudson pitches at Citi Field one night after rookie teammate Chris Heston threw the first no-hitter in the majors this season, beating the New York Mets 5-0 in his 13th career start. The pitching-rich Giants have thrown a no-hitter in four straight seasons, with Heston following Matt Cain's perfect game against Houston in 2012 and hitless gems by Tim Lincecum in 2013 and `14. The only other team to accomplish that feat was the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1962-65, according to STATS. Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax pitched all four of those.

CENTRAL SHOWDOWN

In a matchup of the top two teams in the AL Central, Edinson Volquez (4-4) pitches for the Kansas City Royals in Minnesota against Kyle Gibson (4-3) and the Twins.

HELP WANTED

Orioles left-hander Wei-Yin Chen makes his 12th start, looking to double his season win total in a matchup against the Boston Red Sox. Chen has limited the opposition to three runs or fewer in all but one start, but all he's got to show for his respectable 3.18 ERA is a 1-4 record. His lone win came on May 9 against the Yankees. Chen and Boston starter Rick Porcello each have lost three decisions in a row.

ALMOST READY

One of the most pleasant surprises of the first two months for the Atlanta Braves this season was Kelly Johnson, who started in left field, right field and third base and provided much-needed power. Johnson has been missed since landing on the 15-day disabled list May 14 with a strained right oblique. He has sat out 23 games and still ranks second on the team with six homers. Johnson is expected to come off the DL as soon as Wednesday.

CALM AND COLLECTED

Houston Astros 23-year-old right-hander Vince Velasquez will make his big league debut the Chicago White Sox after being called up on Monday. Velasquez was 3-0 in five appearances with a 1.37 ERA in 26 1-3 innings at Double-A Corpus Christi, striking out 37 and walking nine. Velasquez said Tuesday he is ''100 percent confident'' and ''cool, calm and collected'' heading into his debut. He acknowledged, however, that on Monday his heart was racing after receiving the news he was being called up. ''They always say the goal is to make it to the big leagues, but (that) the hardest part is to maintain your spot and stay here,'' Velasquez said. ''That's my whole goal here is to stay healthy and help this team win.''

Cardinals place LF Holliday on DL

The St. Louis Cardinals placed left fielder Matt Holliday on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday.

Holliday, 35, suffered a strained right quadriceps Monday in the Cardinals' 11-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

Holliday was hitting .303 and ranked fourth in the National League with a .417 on-base percentage.

To fill his spot on the roster, the Cardinals recalled right-hander Miguel Socolovich from Triple-A Memphis.

Rays put RHP Odorizzi on DL

The Tampa Bay Rays put right-hander Jake Odorizzi on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a left oblique strain.

Odorizzi (4-5, 2.47 ERA) felt tightness in that side during his start Friday night in Seattle and left the game in the fifth inning.

Odorizzi is the third starting pitcher to hit the DL for the Rays. Alex Cobb is out for the season due to Tommy John surgery, and Matt Moore is working his way back from elbow surgery performed in 2014.

As the Rays played the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday, third baseman Evan Longoria remained out for the third straight game with a sore left wrist.

Meanwhile, center fielder Desmond Jennings will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Wednesday and will remain out indefinitely. He has not played since late April.

Tigers' Verlander will make season debut Saturday

Justin Verlander will make his 2015 debut for the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, manager Brad Ausmus said Tuesday.

The right-hander will start against the Cleveland Indians in Detroit.

Verlander, 32, has been on the disabled list since Opening Day due to a strained right triceps.

He had a strong outing at Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, striking out nine and allowing one unearned run on five hits in a 5 2/3-inning rehab start.

A 2006 American League Rookie of the Year and 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner, Verlander was 15-12 with a 3.74 ERA in 32 starts last year. He has recorded double-digit victory totals in every season since 2006 and has made at least 30 starts in that span.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you're betting. Whether it's a team looking past this week's opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots. Covers Expert Ben Burns points out his favorites:

Lookahead spot

The San Diego Chargers always seem to find their way into the playoff mix late in the season, and if that holds true in 2015 football bettors could be treated to a tasty lookahead spot in Week 12 of the NFL season.

The Chargers have a potentially-huge matchup versus the Denver Broncos at home in Week 13 but sandwiched between that game and an equally-important stand against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 11 is a trip to Jacksonville in Week 12.

Not only could the Bolts get caught looking ahead to the big game with the Broncos but travel across the country for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff – which is 10 a.m. back in San Diego. Early odds have the Chargers as 4.5-point road favorites versus the Jags in Week 12.

Schedule spot

The defending World Series champs are currently on the East Coast, taking two of three versus the Phillies this past weekend and kicking off a three-game set with the New York Mets Tuesday in Flushing. The Giants face a tough challenge come Thursday when they toss out the first pitch for Game 3 in New York at 7:10 p.m. ET.

San Francisco then must hightail it back to the Bay Area for a 10:15 p.m. ET series opener with the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday. Usually, the MLB schedule makers will set an early game time for team’s making the cross-country hike to play the next day, giving them the evening to travel. However, the Giants will be on little down time for Game 1 versus the D-backs.

Letdown spot

The Colorado Rockies are currently hosting the MLB-leading St. Louis Cardinals in a three-game series, opening that set with an impressive 11-3 win at Coors Field Monday. The Rockies have traded wins and losses over their last nine and are trying to climb out of the National League West basement with a dominant showing against the Cards.

Following that intense matchup with the best team in baseball, Colorado heads to the coast – no, the other way – for a four-game road series against the Miami Marlins. The Rockies, who lost two of three at home to Miami this weekend, could come out flat after facing St. Louis and getting zero down time between that series and traveling to South Beach for Thursday’s opener with the Fish.

Game of the Day: Lightning at Blackhawks

Tampa Bay Lightning at Chicago Blackhawks (-155, 5.5)

Lightning leads series 2-1

With questions clouding his availability, Ben Bishop more than answered the bell to help the Tampa Bay Lightning claim a 2-1 series lead in the Stanley Cup final. Regardless of what ails him, the 6-7 goaltender looks to stand tall as he attempts to propel the Lightning to within one win of the franchise's second championship when they visit the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 4 on Wednesday.

"It's going to take a lot not to play in a Stanley Cup final game, personally," said Bishop, who turned aside 36 shots in Tampa Bay's 3-2 win on Monday despite visibly laboring to both stand and move laterally. Bishop improved to 8-3 with a 1.50 goals-against average and .947 save percentage on the road for the Lightning, who have won four straight away from home and a franchise-best eight this postseason. Although the Blackhawks have dropped consecutive games for the first time in the playoffs, they are no stranger to overcoming a 2-1 series deficit in the Stanley Cup final - having done so against Boston in 2013. "For whatever reason, we play our best games when our backs are against the wall," defenseman Brent Seabrook said.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports

LINE HISTORY: The Blackhawks opened at -150 favorites before being bet to -155. The total opened at 5.5 and has remained there.

INJURY REPORT: Lightning - D Mattias Ohlund (IR-Knee) Blackhawks - Michal Rozsival (Out-Ankle)

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "The Blackhawks out-shot the Lightning in game three by a 38-32 margin and those 38 shots were the most any team has had in the first three games of this series. Additionally, the Hawks converted on one of their two power play chances, while the Bolts went 0 for 2 on the night. Unfortunately, Chicago's best period was the first, when it outshot Tampa Bay, 19-7. It was actually outshot by a 25-19 count over the final two periods. Bishop was spectacular in goal, as he saved 36 shots -- many of them quite difficult saves. But whether he will be able to duplicate that performance on Wednesday is the $64,000 question." Covers Expert Al McMordie

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "We’ve done extremely well during the playoffs because bettors won’t back the Lightning, and I just don’t get it. If you watch these games, they outplay their opponent just about every night. It’s a great defensive team that can quickly capitalize on mistakes. Don’t be surprised if Tampa Bay steals another low-scoring affair on the road." John Lester, senior lines manager for Bookmaker.eu.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING: Coach Jon Cooper had no issue heaping praise toward Victor Hedman after the defenseman feathered a pair of highlight-reel passes en route to his second straight two-assist performance on Monday. "Victor Hedman, what he's doing, I mean, this is clearly his coming-out party," Cooper said of Hedman, whose 13 assists are just five shy of Chicago's Duncan Keith and Anaheim captain Ryan Getzlaf for the overall lead. "(Hedman) sets that (first goal) up and then makes a big-time play on the winner (by Cedric Paquette with 3:11 remaining in the third period). He was a monster out there." Hedman's involvement on the offensive end has been a boon for Tampa Bay, which boasts a 9-1 mark in the postseason when the blue-liner records at least one point.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: Speaking of Keith, the two-time Norris Trophy recipient continued to shoulder the load by setting up another goal in Game 3 while logging 31:37 of ice time. Keith's assist total trails only Edmonton's Paul Coffey (25, 1985), Calgary's Al MacInnis (24, 1989), New York Rangers' Brian Leetch (23, 1994) and Boston's Bobby Orr (19, 1972) among defensemen in one playoff year. Superstar Patrick Kane and captain Jonathan Toews are singing much different tunes after excelling in the first three rounds, with the former being held off the scoresheet in all three games of the Stanley Cup final while the latter has just one assist.

TRENDS:

*Lightning are 4-0 in their last 4 road games.
*Blackhawks are 6-1 in their last 7 after scoring 2 goals or less in their previous game.
*Under is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in Chicago.
*Under is 5-1 in Lightning last 6 road games

COVERS CONSENSUS: According to Covers Consensus, 76 percent of the action is on the Hawks.

Bolts' Bishop is a brick wall on the road

Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop proved to be a road warrior once again in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday, stopping 36 of 38 Chicago Blackhawks shots sent his way en route to a 3-2 victory.

Bishop improved to 8-3 on the road in the postseason. The hulking netminder owns a microscopic 1.50 GAA and .947 save percentage in games outside of Florida.

Tampa can take a 3-1 stranglehold on the series Wednesday in the Windy City. Sportsbooks are presently offering the Bolts as +140 pups for the tilt.

Just how good are the Hawks at bouncing back?

In games following a loss this postseason, the Chicago Blackhawks are a perfect 5-0.

The Blackhawks once again find themselves in a potential bounce back situation ahead of Monday's Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final after falling 4-3 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.

Jonathan Toews and company are also a red-hot 7-1 at the United Center this season - another trend that will appeal to Hawks backers with the series shifting to the Windy City.

Oddsmakers have tabbed Chicago with a price of -158. The Over/Under is currently sitting at 5.5.

Copeland to make spot start for Blue Jays Wednesday

The Toronto Blue Jays have recalled Scott Copeland from Buffalo to make a spot start against the Miami Marlins Wednesday afternoon.

The club decided to rest hurler Aaron Sanchez, who has thrown 100-plus pitches in six of his last eight starts.

Copeland will take the mound when the Jays go for a sweep of the Marlins at Rogers Centre Wednesday afternoon. Toronto is presently -158 and online shops have the total pegged at 9.

Bettors beware: strong wind in Cleveland Wednesday

According to weather forecasts, wind will blow out toward rightfield at around 17 miles per hour at Progressive Field in Cleveland when the Indians host the Seattle Mariners Wednesday evening.

According to our MLB Stadium info, the over has gone 4-2 when wind blows out to right field at Progressive Field.

Furthermore, there is 50 percent possibility of thunderstorms during game time.

Taijuan Walker is probable to start for the Mariners and Trevor Bauer is slated to get the ball for the Indians. The home side is -140 with the total at 8.

We hope you were backing the under in the bigs Tuesday

In a night highlighted by four shutouts, including a no-hitter by Giants rookie Chris Heston, it's no surprise it was a huge night for those backing the under in Major League Baseball action, with the under going 12-3 Tuesday.

That is a huge cash rate of 80.00 percent and the big night almost has the under even with the over for the season at 419-412 over/under.

Phillies just keep cashing overs

The Philadelphia Phillies got thumped 11-2 by the Cincinnati Tuesday night, but extended their over streak to eight consecutive games in the process.

The Phillies are scoring 4.36 runs per game, while allowing 5.86 runs per game over the streak and now sit at 30-24-6 over/under for the season.

Philadelphia sends right-hander Jerome Williams (7-4 O/U, 5.68 ERA) to the mound as they close out their three-game series with the Reds Wednesday afternoon. The Reds counter with righty Jon Moscot (1-0 O/U, 7.20 ERA).

Red Sox, O's meet at Camden

June 10, 2015

Check out more MLB Props and Odds at Sportsbook.ag!

BOSTON RED SOX (27-32) at BALTIMORE ORIOLES (27-30)

First pitch: Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Baltimore -115, Boston +105, Total: 8

The bottom two teams in the AL East, the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles, do battle at Camden Yards on Wednesday night.

The Red Sox have been one of the more inconsistent teams in baseball and despite having some of the best offensive players in the league; have dropped to the bottom of the East. They have been looking pretty good of late, though, and after splitting four games with the AL Central leading Twins, they were able to sweep the Athletics at home while outscoring them 15-8. In the first game of this set, they were unable to keep up their momentum in a close 1-0 loss as the offense went a putrid 0-for-8 with RISP and failed to back the nice outing (6 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 7 K) by Eduardo Rodriguez. One of the five hits came from OF Brock Holt (.298) who is riding a four-game hitting streak in which he is 6-for-13 (.462) with two doubles and two runs scored.

The Orioles are another group which boasts a ton of talent and are struggling with losses in six of their past nine contests coming into this series. They were able to win three of the last four games in a recent seven-game road trip and continued the solid play with a 1-0 victory on Tuesday night. The offense really wasn’t impressive with a mere five hits and 1-for-9 mark with RISP, but it was good to see C Matt Wieters (.375) get a hit in his fourth game since returning from elbow surgery and he now has six hits, three going for extra-bases, with three RBI and three runs since rejoining the club.

The starter getting the call for the visiting Sox will be RHP Rick Porcello (4-5, 5.01 ERA) as he looks to outduel LHP Wei-Yin Chen (1-4, 3.18 ERA) of the host team.

Boston has been horrible when playing on the road with a record of 12-18 as they take on this Orioles group which is a solid 18-13 in front of their fans. It has been Baltimore’s series in this matchup since the start of the 2013 season as they are 27-19 overall and 13-10 when at home.

This will be their ninth meeting of the year and the Orioles are 6-3 so far; outscoring the Red Sox 44-32. Trends show that Baltimore is a poor 13-21 (.382) in night games this year while also going 108-81 (.571) when the total is seven to 8.5 since the start of last year.

Both OFs Daniel Nava (Thumb) and Shane Victorino (Calf) along with Cs Ryan Hanigan (Wrist) and Christian Vazquez (Elbow) remain on the DL for Boston as the Orioles are only without 2B Jonathan Schoop (Knee).

Porcello was one of the key pieces added to the Red Sox this offseason, but after seeing his ERA improve in each of the previous five seasons with Detroit, he’s allowed 39 earned runs in his first 70 innings pitched (5.01 ERA). He has seen a jump in strikeouts (7.1 K/9) and has continued to show tremendous control (2.3 BB/9), but has really struggled with homers and has given up 11 already on the year (1.41 HR/9); including five in his last four starts.

Boston has lost in each of his last three outings as he has gone 19.1 frames with 15 runs allowed on 19 hits with 11 strikeouts (5 walks). He’s had a lot of trouble when facing the Orioles in his career, going 3-6 (5-6 team record) with a 5.21 ERA (1.46 WHIP) and has given up 12 runs on 18 hits in his last two starts against them.

Plenty of Baltimore players have done well when going against Porcello and 1B Chris Davis, 3B Manny Machado, DH Jimmy Paredes, OF Delmon Young and SS J.J. Hardy are a combined 32-for-94 (.340) with five homers and 15 RBI. On the other side of things, OF Travis Snider (2-for-13, 3 K) has done very poorly against the righty.

The Red Sox bullpen has pitched to an 8-8 record with a 3.55 ERA (1.34 WHIP) and has been successful in 14-of-21 (67%) save chances. Koji Uehara (2.37 ERA, 13 saves) has not been quite as dominant as last year and in his last five outings he has taken two losses with a blown save while being 13-for-15 (87%) on save opportunities over the course of the season.

Baltimore has watched Chen’s numbers improve in each of his last three seasons and he is mowing down a career-high 7.5 batters per nine innings thus far in his first 11 starts. His control (2.3 BB/9) remains a big part of his repertoire, but as a fly-ball pitcher he has struggled mightily with homers, posting a career mark of 1.23 HR/9 allowed and is on pace to have a career-worst season in the category with 11 balls leaving the park over his 68 frames (1.46 HR/9).

He has gone at least six innings in seven of his last eight times on the mound, with his team being 5-3 during that stretch. He’s done well in his time against the Red Sox, going 5-4 (9-4 team record) with a 3.79 ERA (1.36 WHIP) and has given up a mere four earned runs in his last four starts. He cannot be looking forward to facing 2B Dustin Pedroia as the gritty superstar is 15-for-32 (.469) with five doubles, a triple and five RBI in his career against the lefty. Meanwhile, 1B Mike Napoli is a mere 5-for-21 with five strikeouts in the matchup, but does have three homers and five RBI.

The relievers for Baltimore have gone 11-6 with a 3.20 ERA (1.23 WHIP) and have earned a save in 18-of-22 (82%) attempts. Zach Britton (1.82 ERA, 16 saves) has not allowed a run in his last 10.2 frames and has tallied an impressive 32:4 K/BB ration in his 24.2 innings of work.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet

June 10, 2015

St. Louis Cardinals at Colorado Rockies | 3:10 p.m. ET

Entering 2015, both Carlos Martinez (6-2, 2.94 ERA) and Chad Bettis (2-0, 2.70 ERA) had a combined 16 starts, but their performance this year would seem to indicate they’re seasoned veterans. Martinez, of course, has slotted in nicely for the Cardinals, with all but two of his 11 assignments registering as quality starts. He’s certainly been at his best lately, with only one total run allowed over his past four outings, spanning 27.1 innings. In the process, he’s racked up 32 strikeouts, versus 11 walks, making him one of the hottest starting pitchers in all of baseball right now. He’ll be tasked with trying to slow down the offense that leads all clubs in team batting average with a .276 mark.

Bettis has also been a pleasant surprise for the Rockies, making five starts and churning out quality performances in four of them. In fact, in one of his most recent starts, Bettis flirted with a no-hitter in Philadelphia at the very end of May. He’s gone at least six innings in each of his past four assignments, although despite his stellar pitching, he’s seen the over hit in four of his five games overall. He’s also maintained a solid 27/9 K/BB ratio but like his counterpart this evening, will be facing an upper echelon lineup. Despite both starters’ tremendous pitching as of late, the over/under is currently residing at 10.5.

Chicago Cubs at Detroit Tigers | 7:08 p.m. ET

If you actively do over/under bets, then you know Cubs' right-hander Jake Arrieta (5-4, 3.04 ERA) is one of the best pitchers for unders since his meteoric-like emergence of a year ago. Arrieta not only enjoyed a breakout season for himself but also established his standing as a reliable unders pitcher, going 13-9-3 towards under bets in 2014. This year, he's hitting them at an even better clip, going 8-2-1. Arrieta's continued success as Chicago's most trustable starter in their rotation shouldn't be much of a surprise either, especially when evaluating his marvelous 75/14 K/BB ratio.

On the other end of the spectrum, Shane Greene (4-5, 5.40 ERA) has been pitching like a guy who wants to assist over backers, with four runs or more surrendered in each of his past three starts. Greene's once-promising season has come off the tracks, with his ERA rising more than two full runs over the past month-and-a-half. Despite this, the remarkably consistent Arrieta is essentially a -110 pick 'em along with his struggling counterpart this evening.

San Francisco Giants at New York Mets | 7:10 p.m. ET

Happy Harvey Day, as the dominant Matt Harvey (6-3, 3.05 ERA) makes the 12th start of his return campaign following Tommy John surgery. Harvey has not disappointed one bit, seemingly picking up where he left off in 2013, and will look to steer his Metsies back in the right direction after getting no-hit last night by rookie Chris Heston. Based on his mindset and track record in these situations, there's probably no pitcher who enjoys rescuing his club more than Harvey, who always wants to take on such challenges. His 2.83 ERA and 0.94 WHIP at home this year point to a successful outing for The Dark Knight.

A victory won't be easy, however, as he matches up with veteran Tim Hudson (3-5, 4.41 ERA), who has been much better as of late after a sluggish beginning. The 39-year-old right-hander has went seven innings in each of his past two starts, allowing a total of three runs over that stretch to bring his ERA below 5.00. Hudson hasn’t nearly been as successful on the road this season, though, with a 5.64 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in four starts away from AT&T Park compared to a 3.66 ERA and 1,30 WHIP in six starts at home. Harvey is a -155 favorite, and somewhat surprisingly, the over/under is 7 rather than 6.5, like it usually is for one of his home assignments.

Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins | 8:10 p.m. ET

The Twins have cashed five straight under bets. So have the Royals, who beat Minnesota last night to retain at least a share of first place in the AL Central. With two solid hurlers on the hill this evening, does the streak of unders continue for both sides?

Edinson Volquez (4-4, 3.26 ERA) is having a good first season in Kansas City, and the Royals have certainly reaped the benefits of his success thus far, being 7-4 as a team in his starts. A main reason for that has much to do with the consistency exhibited by the right-hander, who has yielded more than three runs only twice in his 11 starts, and has never given up more than four. Meanwhile, one of my main sleeper picks for the year, Kyle Gibson (4-3, 3.00 ERA), has been outstanding in putting it all together this year, and has a run similar to that of Volquez in surrendering more than three runs just twice in his 11 outings. He’s also lasted at least five innings in all of his starts since his first one of the year. These two pitchers have to be familiar with each other by now, as this is their third meeting of the still-young 2015 season. The under has gone 1-0-1 (although that push was a bad break for under backers in that affair) in those games, and tonight’s line is currently set at 8.

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics | 10:05 p.m. ET

When Marcus Stroman went down for the season in spring training, I went from him to Jesse Hahn (3-5, 3.51 ERA) as my No. 1 sleeper heading into the 2015 campaign. For the most part, Hahn has performed like the pitcher Oakland thought they were getting from the Padres in the Derek Norris deal, and has been especially excellent as of late, with three runs or less allowed in each of his past five starts, including an impressive complete game shutout. He'll try to defeat Yovani Gallardo (5-6, 3.54 ERA) and the surging Rangers to get the A's back in the win column. They're 2-0 opposing the former Brewer this year, with eight runs scored (seven earned) in just over ten innings (5.91 ERA). As a result, despite being in last place in the division, Oakland is a curious -150 favorite.

Oakland A's 3B Brett Lawrie sends flowers to injured fan

June 10, 2015

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Athletics third baseman Brett Lawrie has sent flowers to the woman who was seriously injured when she was hit in the head by Lawrie's broken bat at Fenway Park last week.

Lawrie did not want to discuss his gesture Tuesday night following Oakland's 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers but said he was ''glad that she's doing well and I'm glad that she got my flowers.''

Tonya Carpenter, 44, suffered what police initially said were life-threatening injuries when she was struck by Lawrie's broken bat Friday night when it flew into the stands during a game against the Boston Red Sox.

Her family released a statement Monday saying Carpenter is responsive, and her condition at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston was upgraded from serious to fair.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Phil Steele college football magazine's top six 6 college football QBs this season:

6) Dak Prescott, Mississippi State-- 6-2 senior

5) Cody Kessler, USC-- 6-1 senior

4) Cardale Jones, Ohio State-- 6-5 junior

3) Jared Goff, California-- 6-4 junior

2) Connor Cook, Michigan State-- 6-4 senior

1) Christian Hackenberg, Penn State-- 6-4 junior

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week thoughts.......

13) Cavaliers 96, Warriors 91-- If you want a one-word summary of how this series has gone thus far, with Cleveland controlling things, pick from this list of words:

defense-toughness-determination-grit-spunk-will-intensity-loose balls-pride.

If you take a measure of any of those words, Cleveland has the edge so far and it also has the best player, obviously.

12) I've only had HBO a couple of years, never had it before; I'm enjoying catching up with the various Hard Knocks shows they've had on over the years. Always fun for me to see how coaches interact with owners/players as well as each other, get a feel for people's personalities. Makes watching games on Sundays even more fun.

11) Pedro Martinez was telling an interesting story on MLB Network Tuesday about when he first broke into pro ball, he lived in a family's house, in the basement and the people spoke very little Spanish. All he did away from the field was play video games. We underestimate how difficult it is for guys to come to this cointry and play ball when there could be a tremendous language barrier involved.

I think teams are a little better now at providing help for these players, but it still cannot be easy. No way would I want to live somewhere if I didn't know the language.

10) Detroit's Rajai Davis made a tremendous leaping catch over the fence in LC field to end the top of the second inning Tuesday. Eight-foot fences make for exciting catches now and then. Davis was at least a foot above the fence when he caught it.

9) Tampa Bay pitching ace Chris Archer didn't start pitching until he was 15.

8) Justin Verlander had a good rehab start this week, will make his 2015 MLB debut Saturday against the Indians.

7) This is how much the NFL has changed; in Super Bowl VIII, in 1974, Miami won 24-7 with Bob Greise, a Hall of Fame QB, completing 6-7 passes for 73 yards.

In the whole game.

Teams do that on one drive now. Football is way more fun to watch now than it used to be-- a lot of that is because they've rigged the rules to favor the offenses.

6) Cleveland took a pitcher named Brady Aiken with the 17th pick Monday, which is only newsworthy because Aiken was the #1 pick LY, but went unsigned when it was discovered he had an arm problem. He had Tommy John surgery and is recovering from that now-- Indians get good value if he recovers fully.

5) A's need to draft older players who get to the major leagues faster, since they will not be with the A's that long anyway once they get to the majors, so no use spending so much time developing them. This is how the A's first ten picks were distributed:

-- Five pitchers (three RHP, two lefties).
-- a catcher, lefty hitter
-- two middle infielders, both from the SEC
-- two centerfielders-- meaning they took four fast position players.

The lone high school kid they took so far is a pitcher from Georgia.

4) 62-year old Rick Pitino signed a contract extention with Louisville thru the 2026 college basketball season; now there's an optimist. I just hope I'm still alive then.

3) White Sox hurler Chris Sale is first MLB pitcher since 2001 to strike out 12+ guys three starts in a row. Pedro Martinez had been the last pitcher to do that.

2) Red Sox drafted the son of Cardinal manager Mike Matheny Tuesday; he plays centerfield for Missouri State, a top ten team in the country.

1) In the first MLB Draft, in 1965, seven catchers got taken ahead of the catcher the Reds took. Someone you may have heard of: Johnny Bench.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities
