Preview: White Sox (40-68) at Tigers (63-45)
Game: 3
Venue: Comerica Park
Date: August 04, 2013 1:08 PM EDT

The long ball continues to produce wins for the Detroit Tigers.
The Tigers will seek their eighth straight win on Sunday when they host the struggling Chicago White Sox in their series finale.
The Tigers (63-45), who led the major leagues with 37 home runs in July, rode three solo home runs Saturday to a 3-0 victory over the White Sox, who have dropped nine in a row.
They continue to hit home runs despite the absence of Miguel Cabrera, who leads the team with 32.
"I've always said that we have so much talent in this clubhouse,' pitcher Max Scherzer said after notching his major league-high 16th win. "Miggy's a big part of it, but even without Miggy, there's plenty of guys in here that are very capable of dominating in the major leagues."
Detroit has homered in six straight games and received an unexpected boost Saturday from newly acquired Jose Iglesias. After going 166 at_bats without a home run, the third baseman hit his first homer since June 2.
He was joined by a few less surprising candidates in Torii Hunter, who has five home runs in his last nine games, and Jhonny Peralta, who has four since July 14.
Hunter is batting .369 since July 2, while Peralta - who may be facing a suspension for PED usage as part of MLB's investigation into Biogenesis, has bounced back after hitting only one homer in 38 games prior to his recent surge.
Pitching, however, remains at the heart of the Tigers' winning streak. Detroit has posted a 1.00 ERA over its last seven games and the bullpen has a 0.63 ERA in that span - conceding one run and seven hits in 14 1-3 innings.
Rick Porcello (8-6, 4.49 ERA) has been as hot as anyone in the Tigers' rotation, posting a 2.08 ERA during a four-start winning streak.
The right-hander won at home last Sunday, scattering three runs over six innings of Detroit's 12-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. He is trying to beat the White Sox (40-68) for the third time in less than four weeks and has gone 7-1 with a 2.47 ERA in his last nine starts against them.
Porcello has benefited from tremendous support during his winning streak, with the Tigers spotting him 32 runs.
Andre Rienzo (0-0, 0.00) could use such support. The right-hander did not get a decision in his major league debut Tuesday after giving up three runs - all unearned - in seven innings of Chicago's 7-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians.
While Rienzo surrendered two hits and three walks around Alexei Ramirez's error in the Indians' three-run fifth inning, he allowed just three baserunners his other six frames.
"It was fun seeing him pitch," manager Robin Ventura said. "The kid was good. For all the excitement he had of having his first start, he was great."
Rienzo is trying to become the first Brazilian-born pitcher to record a victory in the major leagues.
Rienzo, who got to pitch to fellow countryman Yan Gomes his last time out, has embraced the opportunity.
"I'm glad to be the second one," Rienzo said. "I hope more come.'
The White Sox, who have been held to 16 runs during their skid, are trying to avoid their first 10-game losing streak since June 11-20, 1976.
Paul Konerko - 0 for his last 10 with four strikeouts - is a lifetime .355 hitter (11 for 31) versus Porcello.

Preview: Indians (61-49) at Marlins (43-66)
Game: 3
Venue: Marlins Park
Date: August 04, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

The Cleveland Indians proved on Saturday they could quickly recover from the end of their lengthy winning streak.
They'll be looking for a similar bounce-back effort from Scott Kazmir.
After a brilliant seven-start stretch, Kazmir tries to put a rocky outing behind him and deliver a series victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday.
The Indians (61-49) entered Miami averaging 6.3 runs during an eight-game winning streak, including three straight games with double-digit hits.
Both of those streaks ended as Cleveland mustered only three hits in Friday's 4-0 loss, but the Indians' offense got back in gear Saturday. Jason Kipnis broke out of an 0-for-10 slump with three singles, including the go-ahead two-run hit in the seventh, and Cleveland stole six bases in its 4-3 win - its most since 2000.
The Indians had five steals in their previous 15 games, but Saturday's total gave them 84 for the season - tied for the second-most in the majors with Boston and Kansas City.
"The Indians are trying to be aggressive, and that's their game because they can really run," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.
Michael Bourn had three of those steals after going 16 games without one. He had two hits and three runs after coming into Saturday in an 8-for-41 (.195) slump.
"Michael's our spark plug," Kipnis said. "He gets us going and gets us moving in the right direction."
Kazmir (6-4, 4.11 ERA) has generally given the Indians outstanding starts over the past six weeks, going 3-0 with a 1.60 ERA in a seven-start stretch from June 21-July 24. But he wasn't nearly as sharp Tuesday, surrendering a season-high nine hits and four runs over five innings in Cleveland's 7-4 victory over Chicago.
"I don't think he felt real good about his stuff tonight," manager Terry Francona told the Indians' official website. "It was just one of those nights where he came out and he was having a little bit of trouble getting loose. But he kind of, to his credit, he hung in there."
Kazmir is 5-0 at home and 1-4 on the road, but he's pitched better outside of Progressive Field. He has a 4.25 ERA in Cleveland and a 3.99 ERA in 10 road starts.
Regardless of where he's pitched, Kazmir has received plenty of offensive help. The left-hander is getting 7.37 runs of support per nine innings, second in the majors among pitchers who have thrown at least 100 innings behind Detroit's Max Scherzer.
Kazmir hasn't faced the Marlins (43-66) since 2009, when he was a member of the Tampa Bay Rays.
Miami, which on Saturday failed for the sixth time to win a season-high fourth straight, has posted a 2.87 ERA since June 16 - the third-best mark in baseball. The starters have led the way lately, allowing three runs or fewer in 13 of their last 14.
Nathan Eovaldi (2-1, 3.47) will look to maintain the Marlins' success on the mound. He posted a quality start for the seventh time in eight 2013 outings Tuesday, allowing two runs and four hits in six innings of a 4-2 loss to the Mets.
Eovaldi's only real issue has been his control. He has walked 4.24 batters per nine innings, including a season-high five free passes against New York.
"It was rough tonight," Eovaldi said. "I have to work ahead. My fastball command wasn't there. I was off the plate, just a rough one."
The Indians had lost seven of nine on the road prior to Saturday's game, including five one-run defeats.

Preview: Royals (55-52) at Mets (49-59)
Game: 3
Venue: Citi Field
Date: August 04, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

The New York Mets nearly staged a come-from-behind victory over the Kansas City Royals in their first game without David Wright.
The second contest without their superstar could prove much more challenging as they try to produce runs against Ervin Santana, who has been dominant since the All-Star break.
New York will try to bounce back against Santana and Kansas City on Sunday as the club seeks just its second series victory at Citi Field since June.
The Mets (49-59) placed Wright on the disabled list prior to Saturday's game after the All-Star suffered a strained right hamstring running out an infield hit in a 4-2 win on Friday. New York gave no timetable for the return of Wright, who was hitting .309 with 16 homers and 54 RBIs while playing all but two of the team's first 107 games.
"It's disappointing," he said. "I kind of came to the realization that I wasn't going to be able to play today and probably not the next day. I will hopefully get this thing healthy as quickly as I can and get back on the field."
New York lost 4-3 in 12 innings Saturday, rallying from a 3-1 deficit on Josh Satin's two-run single in the eighth before Justin Maxwell led off the 12th with his fifth career pinch-hit home run to lift Kansas City (55-52) to its 10th victory in 11 games.
Maxwell is 3 for 5 in three games since being acquired from Houston on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Justin Turner was 1 for 4 filling in for Wright at third base, and Satin - occupying Wright's typical third spot in the order - went 2 for 5. Manager Terry Collins didn't necessarily specify a permanent plan without Wright moving forward, though.
"We may have to make some lineup adjustments if it's going to be a long-term thing," Collins said. ``If it's going to be two weeks, maybe we can just buy some time with some other guys.'
New York could certainly have used Wright's pop against Santana (7-6, 3.03 ERA). The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.21 ERA in three starts since the Midsummer Classic.
He limited the Twins to two runs and four hits over seven innings of a 7-2 road win on Tuesday, retiring the final 10 batters he faced, including five via strikeout.
"Any time he goes out on the mound, you know he's going to deal," third baseman Mike Moustakas said. "You know he's going to hold them under two runs and we just gotta go score a couple for him."
The Royals' offense could be in for a challenge as well against Mets rookie Zach Wheeler (4-1, 3.55), who is 3-0 with a 2.73 ERA over his last five outings.
Wheeler carried a no-hitter into the seventh of a 4-2 win at Miami on Tuesday and allowed two runs and three hits overall. He didn't allow a homer after giving up seven in his previous six starts.
"That might have been as dominant of a performance through six innings that I've seen all year from anybody," Collins said.
Miguel Tejada is 11 for 26 during a seven-game hitting streak after going 3 for 4 on Saturday.
Marlon Byrd and John Buck - the only Mets with more than one at-bat against Santana - are a combined 6 for 39 (.154) with 12 strikeouts against him.

Preview: Cardinals (64-45) at Reds (61-50)
Game: 3
Venue: Great American Ball Park
Date: August 04, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

Different forms of clutch hitting have determined the winner in each game between the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals.
With Mike Leake and Lance Lynn pitching, that will likely be the case again Sunday when the NL Central rivals conclude their series.
St. Louis (64-45) was the first to find its hitting stroke as the two squads chase Pittsburgh in the Central, going 5 for 8 with runners in scoring position Friday in a 13-3 romp. Despite going 1 for 11 in such situations Saturday, the Reds scored their first five runs with two out en route to an 8-3 win, breaking out of an offensive funk in which they scored 12 runs their previous seven games.
Jack Hannahan's two-run single in the first erased an early deficit before Devin Mesoraco added the first of his two home runs - a two-run shot in the fourth - to back Tony Cingrani's solid effort.
"The hit of the game was the two-out hit by Jack Hannahan,' manager Dusty Baker said. "It was nice to see some of the guys swinging that way tonight. It looked pretty good tonight.'
Lance Lynn (12-5, 3.87 ERA) will try to keep the Reds in check as he attempts to become the Cardinals' second 13-game winner alongside Adam Wainwright. The right-hander pitched well enough to end his three-game road losing streak on Tuesday at Pittsburgh, limiting the Pirates to one run and three hits in six innings of a 2-1, 11-inning defeat in the first game of a doubleheader.
"He was right on," manager Mike Matheny told the team's official website. "If we can keep him doing that the rest of the season, he's going to win a lot of games."
Both of Lynn's lifetime wins over Cincinnati have come this year, and he has a 2.84 ERA in three outings against the Reds in 2013. He surrendered four runs and five hits in six innings before St. Louis posted an 11-4, 10-inning road victory on June 9.
Jay Bruce, who is 0 for 7 with three strikeouts in this series, is 4 for 9 with a double and a triple lifetime versus Lynn.
Mike Leake (10-4, 2.59) will try again for his fourth consecutive winning decision while giving Cincinnati (61-50) its first series victory over St. Louis in four tries this year. The right-hander was in line for his 11th victory Monday after scattering four hits and two walks in seven shutout innings at San Diego, but closer Aroldis Chapman served up a two-run walkoff homer.
It was the best outing during a four-start stretch in which Leake is 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA. He was on the losing end of a 9-2 decision versus St. Louis on June 7, yielding three runs and six hits over five innings.
Leake, whose five starts and six lifetime appearances versus the Cardinals have all come at home, is 2-3 with a 4.76 ERA against them.
Matt Holliday is 7 for 17 with two doubles versus Leake, while David Freese is 5 for 10 with a homer. Carlos Beltran, though, is 2 for 18 with a solo homer.
Matheny likely will re-insert All-Star second baseman Matt Carpenter into the starting lineup after bringing him off the bench Saturday. Carpenter is mired in a 1-for-31 slump that has plummeted his average 22 points to .303.

Preview: Diamondbacks (56-54) at Red Sox (67-45)
Game: 3
Venue: Fenway Park
Date: August 04, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

Returning from injury used to be an exciting moment for Brandon McCarthy, but that feeling gradually wore off after having to do it so many times over his career.
McCarthy takes a major league mound for the first time in more than two months as the Arizona Diamondbacks conclude a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox on Sunday at Fenway Park.
Shoulder problems are nothing new for McCarthy (2-4, 5.00 ERA), who went on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation after giving up six runs in 2 2-3 innings of a 9-5 loss to Texas on May 30. After so many issues in recent years, he's simply relieved to be getting back on the mound.
"Now I feel like when I come back again, it's just a normal start," McCarthy told the team's official website.
The right-hander allowed three runs while throwing 85 pitches in six innings of his second rehab start July 26. Arizona's starters had a 3.63 ERA at the time of his injury, but they've posted a 4.29 mark during his DL stint.
"I felt comfortable and I was able to get back into mental game shape. Nothing bothered me," McCarthy said after his rehab outing. "I was able to get into the sixth and felt strong. I felt like I had more in the tank, too, so that was encouraging. In terms of pitching, I feel like I'm where I need to be."
McCarthy won both of his starts against the Red Sox in 2012 while with Oakland, giving up one run in 6 2-3 innings of a 1-0 win May 2 and two runs in 6 1-3 frames of a 20-2 victory Aug. 31.
He'll be opposed by Felix Doubront, who has been a pleasant surprise this season while putting his name into the club's record books.
Doubront (7-5, 3.77) has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 14 straight starts, the longest streak for a Boston left-hander since at least 1920 and the best by any Red Sox pitcher since Pedro Martinez in 2002.
He took the loss against Tampa Bay in each of his last two starts, though, as David Price tossed gems for the Rays. Doubront gave up three runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 5-1 defeat July 24 before allowing two runs over five in Monday's 2-1 loss.
Though the Red Sox (67-45) weren't able to provide Doubront with much run support in those outings, they've averaged 6.4 runs while winning four of their last five.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer and Shane Victorino added a solo shot in Saturday's 5-2 win over Arizona. Left fielder Jonny Gomes threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the eighth.
"Jonny Gomes might be my favorite player in the big leagues,' said a joking Jake Peavy, who won his first start since coming over from the White Sox at the trade deadline.
The Diamondbacks (56-54) have dropped five of seven and have scored three runs or fewer in each defeat. Paul Goldschmidt, who hit his 26th homer of the season Saturday, is 7 for 39 (.179) with 16 strikeouts over his last 10 games, with five of those hits leaving the ballpark.
Boston has won six of the last seven meetings with Arizona.

Preview: Rockies (52-60) at Pirates (66-44)
Game: 3
Venue: PNC Park
Date: August 04, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

In his first season in Pittsburgh, A.J. Burnett gave the Pirates something they'd rarely had over the past two decades - a legitimate front-of-the-rotation starter.
Though it's hardly evident in his record, he's been even better in 2013.
Burnett looks for just his second win in the past three months Sunday as the Pirates try to maintain their grip on baseball's best record in this finale against the visiting Colorado Rockies.
The right-hander gave Pittsburgh its first 16-game winner since 1991 last season while posting the ninth-best ERA (3.51), fifth-best opponent batting average (.246) and fourth-best strikeout rate (8.01 per nine innings) during the Pirates' 20-year stretch of losing seasons.
Burnett (4-7, 2.86 ERA) has better numbers across the board this season, again ranking among the NL's top 10 in ERA and opponent batting average (.221) while posting the league's second-best strikeout rate (9.93). He just hasn't gotten much help.
Tuesday was the seventh time in Burnett's past 12 starts where the Pirates (66-44) scored exactly one run for him, though manager Clint Hurdle wasn't complaining about his pitcher's contributions in a 2-1, 11-inning win over St. Louis. Burnett seemed to be getting close to an ejection after arguing a call in the sixth, but escaped a jam and made it through seven, allowing three hits and a run while striking out nine.
"A.J. can get fired up. He's not one to hide his emotions by any means," Hurdle told the team's official website. "That's one of the things you love about him. He's out there and lets people know how he feels, including his teammates."
Pittsburgh has given Burnett just seven runs over his last six home starts, a total it nearly provided Francisco Liriano in seven innings Saturday. Jose Tabata homered, tripled and doubled in a 5-2 victory over the Rockies that was Liriano's seventh win in eight outings and extended the Pirates' NL Central lead over St. Louis back to 1 1/2 games.
Tabata had hit .116 in 43 at_bats over his previous 18 games with no extra-base hits.
For whatever reason, visits from Colorado bring out the best in him. Tabata has hit safely in all 11 career home games against the Rockies, homering three times in 45 at_bats and posting a .711 slugging percentage.
Tabata has five homers at PNC in 561 at_bats against all other opponents.
"We've seen Jose swing the bat like this before and be productive over the last few years,' Hurdle said. "Hopefully, he will get hot.'
Burnett has faced Colorado (52-60) just once since 2004, though he's had the number of one Rockie from their time together in the AL. Michael Cuddyer is 3 for 24 with eight strikeouts against Burnett.
If Juan Nicasio (6-5, 4.92) pitches on Sunday anything like he did Tuesday in Atlanta, the Pirates should have little trouble supporting Burnett. The right-hander gave up a career-high eight runs over four innings in an 11-3 loss after posting a 0.47 ERA in three starts following a two-week stint in the minors.
"I'm feeling good, but it was a bad day,' Nicasio said. "It was a bad game. I'm working hard for next time. I need to win. I need to win. I love the game. It's hard.'
Struggling on the road is nothing new for Nicasio. Opponents have an .865 OPS when he pitches outside of Denver, the fourth-worst mark for an NL starter.
Nicasio fared well, however, in his lone previous appearance at PNC Park. He held the Pirates to a run over 6 2-3 innings April 25, 2012, as the Rockies went on to win 2-1.
Colorado All-Star Carlos Gonzalez could return after being held out of the lineup the past four days with a sprained right middle finger.

Preview: Giants (49-60) at Rays (65-45)
Game: 3
Venue: Tropicana Field
Date: August 04, 2013 1:40 PM EDT

Even when they're struggling at the plate, solid pitching continues to help the Tampa Bay Rays win games.
Roberto Hernandez looks to continue his success against the NL and help the Rays build on an extra-inning victory Sunday against the San Francisco Giants.
Tampa Bay (65-45) averaged 4.7 runs while winning five of six before totaling three runs in the last three games. However, the Rays managed enough to avoid a third straight loss with Saturday's 2-1, 10-inning victory over San Francisco.
Wil Myers had two hits, including the winning single with the bases loaded, and David Price threw nine strong innings in his duel with fellow Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum to help the Rays snap the Giants' three-game winning streak.
The Rays are 11-3 against NL opponents this season while San Francisco (49-60) is 3-7 against the AL.
Tampa Bay's starting pitchers are second in the AL with a 3.77 ERA, and have allowed one or no runs 39 times.
Hernandez (6-11, 4.71 ERA) gave up two Tuesday, but he also completed his first game since 2010 when he was pitching for Cleveland and known as Fausto Carmona. The right-hander surrendered a two-run homer in the ninth inning and four other hits in a 5-2 win over Arizona to improve to 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA against NL opponents this season.
Hernandez has allowed three or fewer runs in six straight starts.
"I controlled, threw strikes, kept the ball down, made a lot of ground balls,' Hernandez said. "Whenever I go to the mound, I never think about what happened (previously). I think about today.'
Hernandez's only appearance against the Giants came in 2011 when he yielded three runs in six innings of a 3-1 loss.
Myers, who had his 12-game hitting streak snapped in Friday's 4-1 loss, is batting .431 with 15 RBIs in his last 17 contests. He recorded his first walk-off hit in front of his parents Saturday.
"He does not lack for confidence,' manager Joe Maddon said. "He really wanted to be in that moment.'
Jeff Francoeur had three hits but the top four hitters in San Francisco's lineup went 0 for 16 on Saturday.
Third basemen Pablo Sandoval is 1 for 13 in August. Buster Posey is 1 for 7 in the series and 5 for 34 in his last 10 games.
Guillermo Moscoso makes his first start of the season Sunday after he allowed a two-run homer, another hit, two walks and struck out three in 2 2-3 innings of a 7-3 loss at Philadelphia on Tuesday in his Giants debut.
Acquired in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on July 26, the right-hander gets the chance to start now that Barry Zito has been relegated to the bullpen.
"How long this will be, I can't tell you," manager Bruce Bochy told the Giants' official website. "But it was time to mix it up, change it up."
Moscoso went 8-10 with a 4.10 ERA in 24 starts during 2011 and 2012 for Oakland and Colorado. He was 0-1 with an 8.38 ERA in two starts against Tampa while with Oakland in 2011.
Evan Longoria is hitless in his last 17 at_bats, but is 1 for 3 with a double and three walks versus Moscoso.

Preview: Nationals (54-56) at Brewers (46-64)
Game: 3
Venue: Miller Park
Date: August 04, 2013 2:10 PM EDT

It took Kyle Lohse three months to get back to .500.
The Milwaukee Brewers right-hander will look to finish the weekend with a winning record for the first time this year with a victory over the Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon.
Lohse (7-7, 3.22 ERA) dug himself a deep hole early, going 1-6 with a 4.37 ERA over his first 10 starts.
The right-hander managed to even out his record, however, with a 6-1 record and a 2.29 ERA over his last 12 starts. His last three have been particularly good, as he has posted a 0.47 ERA with 17 strikeouts against three walks.
His success continued at Wrigley Field on Thursday, when he shut out the Chicago Cubs for six innings, but didn't get a decision as Milwaukee eventually won 5-0.
"He's done what we hoped he would do," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "It's too bad because the record with the way he's pitched should be better."
Lohse has had an uptick in his strikeouts the last three outings, striking out 8.05 batters per nine innings after averaging 5.54 over his first 19 starts.
Lohse's run to the break-even mark included a dazzling performance at Nationals Park on July 3, when he limited the Nationals to a solo home run and three other hits in eight innings of a 4-1 Brewers victory. Lohse threw 71 of his 103 pitches for strikes and held Denard Span, Jayson Werth and Bryce Harper hitless in 11 collective at_bats.
He'll be under pressure to help a struggling Brewers offense that has managed just two runs during its three-game losing streak. Milwaukee (46-64) is playing without suspended slugger Ryan Braun and injured regulars Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart.
"I don't want to keep making excuses, but we're without our 3-4-5 hitters so we're going to battle the best that we can," Roenicke said. "You take those guys out of any lineup and you're going to struggle at times."
Milwaukee managed four hits in Saturday night's 3-0 loss to Washington, including an 0-for-14 performance from the two through five hitters in its lineup.
Norichika Aoki is 4 for his last 30 (.133), while Carlos Gomez is hitless in his last 12.
The Nationals (54-56) haven't been much better offensively. They plated three runs or fewer for the 15th time in 22 games on Saturday but did get solo home runs from Wilson Ramos and Adam LaRoche.
Ramos is 5 for 16 with two homers in his last five games, but LaRoche is 2 for 30 in his last eight despite his solo shot Saturday.
Taylor Jordan (1-3, 3.31) is hoping for offensive backing similar to his last outing. After receiving just eight runs of support over his first five starts, the Nationals provided the right-hander 13 on Sunday in a 14-1 rout against the New York Mets for his first major league victory.
"I'm extremely happy," Jordan said. "For a little bit I was wondering. I go 0-4, 0-5 - am I helping the team? Then finally just to get that one win means that I am."
Jordan held the Mets to a run and five hits in six innings, striking out seven while walking just one. The rookie has established a strong sense of control, walking only five in 35 1-3 innings.
Jordan's second big-league start came one month ago against the Brewers, whom he held to two runs in 5 2-3 innings of an 8-5 Washington win.

Preview: Astros (36-73) at Twins (47-60)
Game: 3
Venue: Target Field
Date: August 04, 2013 2:10 PM EDT

Paced by one of the majors' top bullpens, the Minnesota Twins are in position to sweep the Houston Astros, whose relievers continue to cost them games.
After a pair of come-from-behind wins, the Twins try to finish off the visiting Astros on Sunday.
Minnesota starter Kyle Gibson allowed four runs and nine hits in three innings, but four relievers combined to yield one hit and strike out 10 in Saturday's 6-4 victory.
While Twins starters are last in the majors with a 5.19 ERA, their bullpen is second at 2.93. Their relievers have allowed one run and fanned 18 over 17 innings of the last three games.
Minnesota (47-60) might again need to rely on its relief corps if scheduled starter Mike Pelfrey (4-9, 5.31 ERA) is unable to bounce back from a rough performance.
The right-hander had a 2.28 ERA in his first four July starts, but closed the month by allowing four runs in four innings of a 7-2 loss to Kansas City on Tuesday.
"It looked like he was picking at the plate an awful lot rather than attacking the zone,' manager Ron Gardenhire said about Pelfrey, who yielded eight hits and threw 93 pitches. "One thing he's been doing is attacking the zone. Pace of the game means a lot. He kind of put everybody on their heels and he understands that."
Though he has not faced the Astros (36-73) since 2010 while with the New York Mets, Pelfrey has allowed three runs over 22 1-3 innings to win three straight starts against them.
While Minnesota's bullpen has shined, Houston relievers rank last in the majors with a 5.13 ERA. They've allowed six runs, nine hits and walked seven over 7 2-3 innings in the series.
Starter-turned-reliever Lucas Harrell gave up a go-ahead single to Ryan Doumit in Minnesota's three-run seventh Saturday.
Houston's bullpen has posted a 6.55 ERA and blown eight saves while the team has dropped 24 of 30.
"This is arguably the toughest stretch which I've witnessed, whether it's as a player, coach, manager, of bullpen woes,' first-year manager Bo Porter said.
The Astros will recall Brad Peacock (1-3, 8.07) to start Sunday in place of Dallas Keuchel, who pitched 1 2-3 innings of relief in Friday's 4-3, 13-inning loss.
Peacock, who last pitched in the majors June 8, is 6-2 with a 2.73 ERA in 14 games and 13 starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City.
"He's thrown the ball extremely well," Porter told the Astros' official website. "That's obviously factored into the decision-making."
The right-hander opened the season in Houston's rotation, but went 1-3 with an 8.44 ERA in five starts before he was moved to the bullpen and sent down to the minors twice.
Peacock has never faced Minnesota.
Twins leadoff hitter Brian Dozier is batting .304 during a 10-game hitting streak.
Houston rookie outfielder Robbie Grossman is 10 for 20 in his last six games.

Preview: Dodgers (60-49) at Cubs (49-61)
Game: 4
Venue: Wrigley Field
Date: August 04, 2013 2:20 PM EDT

The red-hot Los Angeles Dodgers are now the owners of their longest road win streak in franchise history, and they're hoping rookie phenom Yasiel Puig will get the chance to help add to that lengthy run.
A bruised thumb has left Puig's status uncertain for the Dodgers' attempt to finish off a four-game sweep against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.
Los Angeles (60-49) reached 13 consecutive road wins for the first time with a 3-0 victory Saturday, eclipsing a mark set in 1924 by the Brooklyn Robins. Carl Crawford helped give his team its 30th victory in 37 overall contests with a two-run single in the sixth inning, but Puig was pulled from the game after the seventh.
The right fielder hurt himself while making a diving catch on Starlin Castro's fly ball in the seventh. Puig had two hits for the third straight game and is batting .400 in his past 12.
"We'll see how I feel (Sunday) before the game," Puig said through a translator. "I'll take some swings and we'll decide then."
With or without Puig, the Dodgers will seek their 19th win in 21 road contests and their first sweep of four or more games at Wrigley Field in 25 years. Los Angeles registered five wins there July 14-17, 1988.
"It's a good feeling to be a part of history, to keep winning," Crawford said. "The team is jelling really well right now."
Pulling that off might be challenging if Zack Greinke (8-3, 3.43 ERA) starts Sunday. The right-hander is 0-2 with a 14.00 ERA in two games at Wrigley, but manager Don Mattingly said he may push him back to Monday.
Mattingly would like to get his starters some rest as the Dodgers don't have a day off until Aug. 15.
Greinke is 3-2 with a 4.45 ERA in five overall matchups with Chicago (49-61) and struck out 12 while giving up two runs over seven innings in the latest of those, an 8-0 win June 6, 2012. He's given up two runs or fewer in his last five starts, including his two most recent on the road, but is winless in his past three.
He gave up two runs over seven innings and struck out seven in Tuesday's 3-2 victory against the New York Yankees.
The Cubs, meanwhile, are hoping Carlos Villanueva (2-7, 4.33) can snap a three-game skid. The right-hander has a 6.04 ERA in five starts since rejoining the rotation July 7 and an 8.22 ERA in his last three.
He was charged with four runs and six hits - two homers - over 6 1-3 innings Tuesday against Milwaukee, failing to hold a three-run lead as the Brewers won 6-5.
"We all go out there and try to do our jobs, and sometimes it doesn't happen the way we want it to," Villanueva told the team's official website. "When it happens more than once, more than twice - obviously, it's difficult the day of. Maybe in five days we'll have a little better luck."
Villanueva won his only start against the Dodgers with Milwaukee in 2008.
Luis Valbuena is 7 for 18 with three doubles lifetime against Greinke.

Preview: Blue Jays (50-60) at Angels (51-58)
Game: 4
Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
Date: August 04, 2013 3:35 PM EDT

As C.J. Wilson looks to bounce back from his shortest outing of the season for the Los Angeles Angels, Mark Buehrle hopes to continue his current run of success and help the Toronto Blue Jays get back on track.
Riding a 20-inning scoreless stretch, Buehrle tries to prevent the visiting Blue Jays from being swept in their four-game set against Wilson and the Angels on Sunday.
Los Angeles (51-58) dropped the final six of a seven-game trip to Oakland and Texas to conclude July, but has totaled 22 runs while hitting .360 against Toronto (50-60) after Saturday's 7-3 win.
Looking to record their second home series sweep of at least three games, the Angels could be in for a serious challenge against Buehrle (7-7, 4.27 ERA). The veteran left-hander has not allowed a run since the third inning of a 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay on July 20.
"He does everything right,' Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "He's `old reliable.' He's been around for a while and has had a tremendous career.'
Buehrle has yielded seven hits and struck out 11 over 16 innings of his last two starts. He stifled Oakland for seven innings in Tuesday's 5-0 win, scattering five hits.
"You still have to make your pitches and hit location and it is still a lot of luck,' he said.
If anything, Gibbons needs Buehrle to show some stamina since Toronto starters have lasted 11 innings in the previous three games. The Blue Jays were already swept in a four-game set at Yankee Stadium April 25-28.
"Starting pitching is the name of the game, and it's really hurt us this year,' Gibbons said.
Including the postseason, Buehrle is 3-7 with a 4.11 ERA in 20 starts against the Angels, but he has not faced them since 2011.
Howie Kendrick is batting .353 (6 for 17) with four extra-base hits against Buehrle and had three hits with an RBI in Los Angeles' 7-3 victory Saturday. He's hitting .324 with six RBIs in the last eight contests.
Angels rookie outfielder Kole Calhoun went 2 for 9 in the first four games since making his season debut last Sunday, but is 7 for 13 in the series and has homered the last two contests. He delivered a two-run, go-ahead home run off All-Star reliever Steve Delabar in Friday's 7-5 victory.
"(Friday) night was definitely a lot of fun, and (Saturday) was just another good team win,' Calhoun said.
Wilson (11-6, 3.48) allowed five earned runs over 36 innings to win four of five starts before he gave up six runs and a season-high 11 hits while throwing 109 pitches in four innings of a wild 14-11, 10-inning loss at Texas on Tuesday.
The left-hander went 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in two starts against the Blue Jays last season.
Ex-Angel Maicer Izturis is batting .355 (11 for 31) with three doubles against Wilson, but is 1 for 10 in the series and 5 for 43 (.116) in his last 14 games.
Teammate Edwin Encarnacion went 2 for 3 with an RBI on Saturday, and is batting .409 (9 for 22) in his last seven against the Angels.

Preview: Rangers (61-50) at Athletics (64-46)
Game: 3
Venue: O.co Coliseum
Date: August 04, 2013 4:05 PM EDT

After slowing the Texas Rangers' momentum, the Oakland Athletics will seek to win their pivotal AL West series with help from A.J. Griffin.
The right-hander will try to produce another strong outing against Texas and help the A's push their lead over the Rangers to 4 1/2 games after Sunday's finale.
Trailing by six games after last weekend, Texas (61-50) had a chance to pull within 1 1/2 with a season-high sixth straight win Saturday. Instead, the Athletics snapped their three-game slide with a 4-2 victory.
Yoenis Cespedes' home run - only his second since June 21 - highlighted a three-run first inning for Oakland (64-46).
"You've got to do what you've got to do to win a game. We were fortunate enough to string together at_bats and come away with the win," catcher Stephen Vogt told the team's website. "I think any time you can go out and get a win against a team like that ... it's going to be a good boost for you as a team. Our goal is to have good at_bats, quality at_bats, and hopefully we can continue to do that."
Griffin (10-7, 3.90 ERA) will try to deliver another key victory for the A's while earning his sixth win in seven decisions. He picked up his second in as many starts Monday against Toronto despite having trouble keeping the ball in the park once more.
Griffin gave up three home runs, which accounted for all of the Blue Jays' four runs over his seven innings, in a 9-4 victory. The 26 homers he's allowed are the most in the majors, and he's given up eight in the past three games.
He has given up a home run in each of his two starts against Texas this season but little else. Griffin is 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA in those matchups, including a 5-1 home win May 13.
Derek Holland (8-6, 3.18) will try to avoid a third straight loss by continuing his success on the road. The left-hander is 5-0 with a 2.45 ERA in his last eight starts away from home but did not get a decision in a 6-5 win in Oakland on May 14.
Holland allowed four runs over 5 2-3 innings in that game after going 4-0 with a 2.13 ERA in his previous seven matchups.
"They are all big games from here on out," he told the team's website. "We're chasing Oakland. Obviously every game counts, but these are big games. It's a chance to gain ground, a turning point, and take off from there."
Holland has a 3.80 ERA in his last three overall outings and got a combined one run of support in his first two during that stretch.
He got six Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels but did not get a decision in a wild 14-11 victory in 10 innings. Holland gave up four runs over six innings with three of those coming on a pair of home runs.
He's given up 11 homers this season but five in the last six games.
The recently acquired Alberto Callaspo is 12 for 35 (.343) with five doubles and a home run lifetime against Holland. Josh Donaldson has five hits in his last six at_bats, including two doubles and a home run.
The Rangers' Elvis Andrus, riding a career-high 16-game hit streak, is 1 for 9 with three strikeouts against Griffin in his career.

Preview: Yankees (57-52) at Padres (51-60)
Game: 3
Venue: PETCO Park
Date: August 04, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

Ian Kennedy admitted being traded isn't a great feeling, but he's ready to help improve a San Diego Padres rotation that has one of the worst ERAs in the NL.
He'll make his first start for San Diego in Sunday's finale against the visiting New York Yankees, who were the first to trade the right-hander nearly four years ago.
Kennedy, the 21st overall pick of the Yankees in 2006, went 1-4 with a 6.03 ERA in 12 starts and two relief appearances for New York from 2007-09 before being traded to Arizona in December 2009 in the three-team deal that brought Curtis Granderson to the Bronx.
Kennedy had a career season in 2011 for the Diamondbacks by going 21-4 with a 2.88 ERA before winning 15 games in 2012, but he hasn't been able to find that form this year.
Arizona traded Kennedy (3-8, 5.23 ERA) to San Diego on Wednesday for left-handed reliever Joe Thatcher, a minor leaguer and a draft pick.
"You work so hard with the team you're with and then you get traded," Kennedy told the team's official website. "But I'm excited because I got to come to a team that I'm familiar with, a division that I'm familiar with -- kind of a little mixed emotions."
Kennedy also finds it a bit strange that he'll be making his first start with the Padres against the team he came up with.
"It's kind of ironic," Kennedy said. "Kind of (have) come a little full circle."
San Diego starters rank 14th in the NL with a 4.59 ERA, a mark Kennedy looks to help improve as he faces a New York team that won Saturday's contest 3-0.
Granderson, who came off the disabled list before Friday's 7-2 loss to the Padres, hit a two-run homer in the seventh.
"I've talked about how Curtis can change the complexion of the game really quickly, and that's what he did," manager Joe Girardi said. "That's why I put him in the four slot, because of how he can change a game. It's really nice to have him back.'
The Yankees (57-52) will again be without Derek Jeter, who has a sore right leg and also was held out of the lineup Saturday. Girardi said Jeter needs to rest for at least another day.
"It's a concern of ours and we've got to try to get him healthy,' Girardi said.
San Diego (51-60) had won five of six prior to Saturday's defeat. It has been held to two runs or fewer six times over its last 10 games.
The Padres will look to bounce back while facing Kennedy's former teammate of three years, Phil Hughes, on Sunday.
Hughes (4-9, 4.58), much like Kennedy, has been struggling this season. He's lasted fewer than five innings seven times, including last Sunday when he allowed five runs and nine hits in four frames of New York's 6-5 win over Tampa Bay.
"I wasn't able to hold a lead twice, something us starters take a lot of pride in," Hughes said. "To not be able to do that is disappointing."
The right-hander has never faced the Padres, who have lost 12 of 15 all-time meetings - beginning with the Yankees sweeping the 1998 World Series.

Game: 3
Venue: Citizens Bank Park
Date: August 04, 2013 8:05 PM EDT

The Atlanta Braves managed to extend their lengthy win streak despite one of their worst performances at the plate during that run.
They'll try to keep rolling by adding to Cliff Lee's recent issues.
The Braves will hope to take advantage of Lee's struggles to keep the ball in the park as they look to record their second 10-game win streak of the season Sunday night.
Atlanta (66-45) had just five hits Saturday and went 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position, but won 5-4 in 12 innings. Freddie Freeman hit a key two-run single in the fifth and Dan Uggla drove in the go-ahead run by beating out a potential double-play grounder.
"Uggla really busted it down the line," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "The winning run came on a double-play ball, but our two runners made a difference."
The Braves are batting .303 with 62 runs during their streak and had 10 or more hits in six consecutive games before Saturday's win. They'll try to recapture that prowess when they face Lee (10-4, 3.05 ERA) for the second time in less than a month.
He kept the Braves scoreless for six innings July 5 before giving up four runs in his final frame. Uggla hit a three-run homer, but Philadelphia's bullpen closed it out to give Lee a 5-4 victory.
He's 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in his two starts since that game with all nine of his runs allowed coming on seven homers. He gave up three longballs in a 5-0 loss to the New York Mets on July 21 and had to skip a scheduled start July 27 due to neck stiffness.
Lee was rumored to be on the trading block, but Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said there were few discussions about the left-hander.
"To be frank ... someone would have had to bowl us over to do something on Cliff," Amaro told the team's official website. "He's a top-of-the-rotation (guy) who would be very difficult to replace."
Prior to Lee's rough inning against the Braves last month, he was 4-1 with a 0.78 ERA in his previous six starts in the series. He gave up two hits over eight innings and struck out eight in a 2-0 win April 4.
Atlanta followed that loss with 10 consecutive wins from April 5-16.
The Braves' Alex Wood (1-2, 3.51) will try to build on his first major league win against the scuffling Phillies (50-60), losers in 12 of 13 and a season-high four in a row at home. In his third career start, Wood gave up three runs over seven innings and struck out seven in an 11-3 victory against Colorado on Tuesday.
The left-hander could have a prime chance to pick up another victory as Atlanta has won 10 of 14 in Philadelphia in the past two seasons. The Braves started that stretch with a three-game sweep July 6-8, 2012.
Darin Ruf, who has reached base in 31 consecutive games, is the only active Phillies player to get a hit off Wood. His streak is the longest in the majors this season and the longest by a Philadelphia hitter since Chase Utley's 33-game run Sept. 7, 2008-April 22, 2009.
Justin Upton, batting .353 with three homers during an eight-game hit streak, is 5 for 9 against Lee over the past two seasons.
