Payoff Pitch: Today's Best Mound Matchup
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (+154) vs. Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies (-164)

Tim Lincecum (16-10, 3.43 ERA)

Pitching matchups don’t get much better than this. After all, when Tim Lincecum is going into a game as a considerable underdog, you know it’s serious.

Of course, Lincecum’s status as an underdog on Saturday has a lot more to do with the other guy (Roy Halladay) than it does with Lincecum, himself. The 26-year-old was not quite as dominant this season as he was in his previous two Cy Young-winning campaigns, but he still went 16-10 with a 3.43 ERA.

And if Lincecum’s Game 1 performance against Atlanta in the Divisional Series was any indication, it’s only getting better for him in the playoffs. He tossed a complete game two-hitter, allowing no runs and one walk while striking out 14 in San Francisco’s 1-0 victory. The Giants went on to win the series 3-1, thus not needing Lincecum for a Game 5 and allowing him to rest for the opener against Philadelphia.

Speaking of the Phillies, Lincecum was baffling in his lone start against them this season. On April 28 in San Francisco, he pitched 8 1/3 innings and gave up just three hits and two runs while striking out 11 batters. However, Brian Wilson blew the save in the ninth and Philadelphia went on to win 7-6 in 11 innings.

The only real question mark surrounding Lincecum is another blister issue on his throwing hand. However, he told the San Jose Mercury news that it should not be a factor in the wake of extensive treatment. “It's not a big deal, and we're taking care of it,” Lincecum assured.

Roy Halladay (21-10, 2.44 ERA)

If Lincecum was lights-out against the Braves, Halladay was even better in his Game 1 performance against the Reds. In fact, he was unhittable. Literally.

Halladay hurled the second no-hitter in postseason history, the first since Don Larsen’s famous perfect game with the New York Yankees in the 1956 World Series. He walked only one and struck out eight in a 4-0 shutout to set the tone for what proved to be a sweep of Cincinnati.

It had already been an incredible season for Halladay, one that was already highlighted by a perfect game. As a whole, the doctor compiled a 21-10 record with a 2.44 ERA to go along with a ridiculous strikeout-to-walk ratio of 219 to 30.

However, one of his worst starts of the year came in his only outing against the Giants; on April 26 in San Francisco, Halladay took the loss in a 5-1 game after surrendering 10 hits and five runs in seven innings.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Philadelphia Phillies (-164, 6)

San Francisco has two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum taking the mound for Game 1 of the NLCS against Philadelphia on Saturday, but that’s just about where the good news ends for the Giants.

Toeing the rubber for the other side, of course, is none other than Roy Halladay. After throwing a perfect game during the regular season, the doctor added a playoff no-hitter to his resume by befuddling the Reds in Game 1 of the previous series.

As owners of the best record in the National League, the Phillies also have home-field advantage. They have more home wins this season (54) than any of the four remaining teams, as the Braves (56) were eliminated by San Francisco in the first round.

Furthermore, Philadelphia is a playoff-proven team going up against a San Francisco squad that is in uncharted waters. The Giants have not been to the NLCS since 2002. The Phillies, on the other hand, have appeared in the last two World Series.

“It helps players feel like they don't need to do more than what they can do,” closer Brad Lidge told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “They know they can rely on other players to do their jobs. In the postseason, everyone has had a good measure of success. So we can fall back on that. ‘You get your job done, I'll get my job done.’”

Pick: Phillies

New York Yankees at Texas Rangers

The Phillies and Yankees appear to have a lot in common right now, and not just because they faced each other in last year’s World Series and are favored to do the same in 2010. Like Philadelphia, New York is battle-tested in the playoffs, is dangerous with both its arms and its bats, and is coming off a three-game game sweep—thus free to do what it wants with the pitching rotation.

Manager Joe Girardi has decided to save all-time postseason wins leader Andy Pettitte for Game 3 in the Bronx, opting to go with 24-year-old Phil Hughes for Game 2 on Saturday. The method behind any perceived madness? Pettitte is 2-4 with an 8.22 ERA in his career at Texas, while Hughes is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA lifetime in Arlington.

“He's very laid back,” Pettitte told the New York Post, speaking of Hughes. “He’s very confident in what he can do. As long as he didn’t try to overthrow too much, I felt he was going to have a good start against Minnesota.”

Hughes did just that in Game 3 against the Twins (the first playoff start of his career), pitching seven innings and allowing just four hits and one walk in New York’s 6-1 series-clinching win. For his career in the postseason, Hughes is 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 19 innings.

Pick: Yankees

Young winner Tim Lincecum going for them on Sunday, but they might not lose too much in the way of their starting pitching. If anything at all.

Sanchez had a breakout season for San Francisco. In two previous years as a starter, he recorded ERAs of 5.01 and 4.24. That number plunged to 3.07 in 2010 and he also reached a double-digit win total (13) for the first time. Sanchez struck out 205 batters against 96 walks.

It was full steam ahead for the southpaw in his first career playoff appearance earlier this week against the Braves. In a critical Game 3 in Atlanta with the series tied 1-1, Sanchez went 7 1/3 innings and allowed just two hits and one run while striking out 11. He did not get the win due to a bullpen collapse, but the Giants still bounced back to win the game and—one day later—the series.

Another encouraging sign for San Francisco? Sanchez was absolutely awesome against the Phillies during the regular season. He won both of his starts and allowed only five hits and two runs while striking out 13 in 13 innings of work.

Roy Oswalt (21-10, 2.44 ERA)

This is why the Phillies went out and got Oswalt before the trade deadline; to step up in the postseason and to help them win another World Series title following their 2008 triumph.

Oswalt was unspectacular in last week’s Game 2 victory over the Reds, going five innings and allowing five hits, including two homers, and four runs (three earned). However, Oswalt still has outstanding numbers for his postseason career. In eight starts and nine total appearances he is 4-0 with a 3.83 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 51 2/3 innings.

In compiling a 21-10 record and 2.44 ERA this season, Oswalt made four starts against the Giants, more than he made against any other team except the Nationals. The righty went 1-3 and gave up 25 hits and 10 runs in 27 innings (3.33. ERA).

Going with Roy Halladay in Game 1 was a no-brainer, as it would have been for any team in the league. Choosing between Oswalt and Cole Hamels for Games 2 and 3, however, had to be a tough call. But perhaps manager Charlie Manuel considered this: in his career at Citizens Bank Park, Oswalt is 9-0 with a 2.10 ERA.

On October 17 in Baseball History...

1911 - The Philadelphia Athletics scored twice in the 11th inning to beat the New York Giants, 3-2, in Game 3 of the World Series. Frank Baker hit a home run in the ninth inning off Christy Mathewson to tie the score, 1-1. Baker was tagged with the nickname "Home Run" for his exploits.

1960 - The National League formally awarded franchises to the New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc., headed by Joan Payson, and a Houston group headed by Judge Roy Hofheinz, Craig Cullinan, and R.E. Smith.

1976 - On a cold Sunday night, the Reds gang up on Catfish Hunter for three runs, but the Yankees battle back to tie it up. With two outs in the ninth inning, Yanks shortstop Fred Stanley throws Griffey's easy grounder into the dugout. A walk and a Tony Perez single follow and the Yanks lose the second World Series game 4-3.

1978 - The Yanks win their fourth straight game, 7-2, to clinch their second consecutive World Championship over the Dodgers. Brian Doyle and Series MVP Bucky Dent have three hits apiece.

1979 - Willie Stargell's two-run homer gave the Pirates a 4-1 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles and the World Series in seven games.

1982 - Robin Yount records his second four-hit game of the World Series to lead the Brewers to a 6-4 win in Game Five and give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead overall. Yount is the first player ever to have multiple four-hit games in one World Series.

1987 - The Minnesota Twins overpowered St. Louis, 10-1, in the opening game of the first indoor World Series. Dan Gladden's grand slam capped a seven-run fourth inning.

1989 - Minutes before Game 3 of the World Series between Oakland and San Francisco, an earthquake hit the Bay area. The game was postponed and the Series resumed 11 days later.

1990 - In the first extra-inning World Series game since 1986, the underdog Reds beat the A's 5-4 in ten innings to take a surprising 2-0 lead in the Series. Reds outfielder Billy Hatcher goes 4-for-4 to run his consecutive hit streak to seven, tying Thurman Munson's World Series record.

1991 - Brian Hunter's two-run home run in the first inning of Game Seven is all John Smoltz needs as he tosses a 4-0 shutout over Pittsburgh.

1992 - Tom Glavine goes the distance to give the Braves a 3-1 win over the Blue Jays in Game One of the World Series.

1993 - A five-run uprising in the third pushes the Phillies to a 6-4 win over Toronto in Game Two. Mitch Williams earns his only save of the Series.

1995 - The Cleveland Indians beat the Seattle Mariners, 4-0, in Game 6 of the American League championship series, winning their first pennant since 1954.

1996 - The Atlanta Braves had the biggest blowout in postseason history, beating St. Louis, 15-0, in Game 7 of the NL championship series to complete a comeback from a 3-1 deficit. The Cardinals became the only club to blow a 3-1 edge three times in the postseason.

The Saints are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall and 3-13 ATS in their last 16 against the NFC.

Key stat

6.5 – Yards per carry averaged this season by Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles, No. 1 in the NFL among running backs (with at least 50 carries). Charles is going up against a Houston defense that is just one of two units in the NFL giving up more than 400 yards per game.

Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez did not travel with the Colts to Washington, nor did running back Donald Brown. Gonzalez’s absence could be overcome since Pierre Garcon has returned, but Brown would have been relied upon if Joseph Addai (questionable with a shoulder injury) can’t go. While this is good news for the Washington defense, the Redskins may miss safety LaRon Landry (wrist) in their effort to stop Peyton Manning and the air attack.

Biggest games on the slate

San Francisco Giants at Philadelphia Phillies (-164, 6)

Baltimore Ravens at New England Patriots (-2.5, 44.5)

Notable quotable

“We got manhandled by a damn good team. And everything we said we wanted to do, we didn’t do. Penalties, turnovers, we couldn’t convert on third down, couldn’t control the tempo of the game.” – New England quarterback Tom Brady on last year’s blowout loss at home to Baltimore in the playoffs. The Patriots get another shot at the Ravens on Sunday.

“I have a lot of respect for them. They play really hard. They’re very well coached. They have a very physical front, a very emotional team. They play with energy and enthusiasm for what they’re doing. Once they get fired up, it’s tough to calm them down. We haven’t played a full 60-minute game yet. That’s what it’s going to take against these guys this week. If it’s dink and dunk and score touchdowns, I’m fine with dinking and dunking. I don’t care, whatever it takes to get the ball in the endzone. If we hand it off every play, I’m fine with that. We have to be able to score points.” – Brady on this week’s game against Baltimore.

Tips and notes

At 2-3, the Broncos need something to get them going, especially with an unfavorable matchup on Sunday. Denver’s 25th-ranked run defense is going up against a Jets rushing offense that is No. 1 in the NFL at 165.2 yards per game. Head coach Josh McDaniels issued a challenge of sorts heading into the AFC showdown. “I'm not calling our team a team that went in there and laid down or anything like that, but when you give up a certain number or rushing yards and don't rush the football very well, there's reason to say they were the tougher team. That was the case last Sunday, and we'll see if that's the case this Sunday or not.”

Michael Vick has not been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, but Philadelphia head coach Any Reid updated his quarterback’s status on Saturday and the news wasn’t good. Vick will be the emergency QB on Sunday, not only behind starter Kevin Kolb on the depth chart, but also behind rookie Mike Kafka. So much for Vick getting a shot at his former team.

Carolina left wing Sergei Samsonov missed the first two games of this season due to a neck injury but he returned to the lineup on Thursday. Samsonov made an immediate impact with a goal against Ottowa, only to see the Hurricanes go down 3-2. The 31-year-old tallied 14 goals and 15 assists in 29 games last season.

Bronx is home dog in a playoff game for first time since '04; Lee is 4-1, 1.95 in his last five starts. Pettitte is 1-1, 6.20 in his last five starts- six of his last nine starts went over the total. Have to respect Pettitte's postseason record (19-9, 3.87 in 41 career postseason starts), but Lee's might be even more impressive (6-0, 1.44 in seven postseason starts). Home team is 1-6 in Texas games this postseason (Rangers 3-0 on road).

Texas Rangers at New York Yankees [TBS | 8:07 PM ET]

RANGERS: (-115, O/U 7.5) Texas is playing with plenty of confidence after winning their first postseason game in franchise history. The Rangers are the improbable ALCS entrant, and they are tied with the powerful Yankees at 1-1 in their ALCS matchup. Texas will send all world ace P Cliff Lee to the mound tonight. Lee is 6-0 with a 1.44 ERA in 7 postseason starts, including 3 complete games. With a win tonight, Lee will become only the 3rd pitcher in history to win his first 7 postseason starts. Making Texas even more confident is the fact that Lee is 5-0 with two complete games in his past 5 games pitching in New York. The Rangers are 6-0 in their last 6 road games. The Rangers are 4-0 in their last 4 road games against a left-handed starter. Texas is 11-4 in their last 15 games against a team with a winning record. The Rangers are 5-1 in Lee's last 6 starts overall. The Rangers are 2-5 in Lee's last 7 starts as a road favorite.

Rangers are 9-3 last 12 games against the American League East.
Under is 5-0 last 5 playoff road games.

Key Injuries - None Reported.

Projected Score: 4 (UNDER-Total of the Day)

YANKEES: New York is hoping to celebrate P Andy Pettitte's 20th career postseason win tonight. Beating Cliff Lee will be a tall order, as evident by the simple fact that New York is the listed home underdog tonight. New York is currently tied 1-1 in their best of 7 ALCS with Texas. Pettitte has been money in the postseason over his career, most recently going 5-0 with a 2.88 ERA over his past 9 playoff starts. New York has the most potent offense in baseball this year, but that doesn't change the fact they only scored 1 run in Game 2 of this series. The Yankees are 5-0 in their last 5 games following an off day. New York is 6-2 in their last 8 League Championship home games. The Yankees are 3-9 in their last 12 games against a left-handed starter. The Yankees are 5-0 in Pettitte's last 5 starts against the American League West. New York is 7-2 in Pettitte's last 9 starts as an underdog. The Yankees are 19-7 in Pettitte's last 26 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance.

Yankees are 8-1 last 9 playoff home games.
Over is 4-0 last 4 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - None Reported.

Projected Score: 2

Texas Rangers at New York Yankees (+105, 7.5)

The Texas Rangers were only 42-42 on the road during the regular season, but have to feel pretty good heading into New York as they’re unbeaten as visitors in the postseason – especially with Cliff Lee taking the hill. Texas took all three first-round road games at Tampa Bay.

Rangers manager Ron Washington is still trying to decide who will play first base on Monday. You’d think Jorge Cantu, who bats right, would be the guy (even though he is hitless in seven playoff at bats) with the Yanks sending out lefty Andy Pettitte, but rookie Mitch Moreland is making a case to get the call.

Moreland bats left but is hitting .316 with two doubles and two RBIs in six playoff games. He was 2-for-3 with a walk in Game 2 and also picked up a ninth-inning single against Mariano Rivera in Game 1.

“We have a blue collar approach to the game, and we have welcomed him with open arms because he's just like that,” Texas’ Michael Young said of Moreland. “He's not scared of anything. No situation is going to mess with him. He had the usual rookie hiccups during the season, but it was because he was a rookie, not because he was scared."

Texas has put up 17 runs over its last three games.

Pick: Texas

Payoff Pitch: Today's Best Mound Matchup
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cliff Lee, Texas Rangers vs. Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees

Cliff Lee (14-9, 3.09 ERA)

Cliff Lee takes the mound in New York for Game 3 looking to add another chapter to his playoff mystique. The 32-year-old lefty is 6-0 in seven playoff starts with a 1.44 ERA.

He has made two postseason starts this year, beating the Rays by identical 5-1 scores in the first and last games of the series demonstrating the dominant control he has had all year. Lee hasn’t walked a batter in the playoffs after issuing just 18 free passes to first in 212 1/3 innings pitched in the regular season.

"I don't think there's an exact science how you approach Cliff Lee," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters. "But to me, he's a lot like Roy Halladay. If you try to take a couple of pitches and get deep in the count, you might be 0-2. So for me with Cliff Lee, I think you have to be ready to hit from pitch one. And if he makes a mistake, don't miss it."

Lee has two wins in three starts against the Yankees this season with a 3.09 ERA. He will be in line to face the Yanks again if the series goes to seven games.

Andy Pettitte (12-3, 3.24 ERA)

Andy Pettitte has been overshadowed in this matchup by Lee, but don’t forget New York’s 38-year-old veteran has the most playoff wins in MLB history.
He picked up his 19th career postseason wins when he went seven innings allowing two runs in a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins in the ALDS, but you have to wonder how he’ll react to an 11-day layoff with just four starts under his belt after July 18.

The Yanks need a lift, too. Phil Hughes and CC Sabathia both allowed five runs in their starts to begin this series.

“Obviously, it’s going to be 11 days for me making this start on Monday, which is an awful long time," Pettitte told reporters after the Yankees’ 7-2 Game 2 loss Saturday. "You’d rather pitch on three days’ rest than (10) days’ rest, I can promise you that much.

"I think literally, it’s if you can get through those first couple of innings. If you can control your emotions and get going early. Sometimes it’s tough to get going."

Pettitte is 5-0 over his last nine playoff starts, posting a 2.88 ERA.
