Quote of the Day
“I just wanted to be a professional umpire in my country. So I started to watch professional baseball games. I met a guy, he was a professional umpire in my hometown. So he was the one who saw me one day I was working with little kids and he said, ‘OK, you’re tall. I think you have the talent to do this. I’m going to bring you to my academy,’ which was an association in my hometown. And I started to work with him. He started to teach me stuff that he already knew for being a professional umpire. And that’s how it started.”
Major league umpire Carlos Torres

Friday’s quiz
Other than Don Larsen, Roy Halladay threw the only one-pitcher no-hitter in postseason history, in 2010 against the Reds.

Thursday’s quiz
Other than Don Larsen, Roy Halladay threw the only one-pitcher no-hitter in postseason history, in 2010 against the Reds.

Wednesday’s quiz
Of all the NFL teams, Green Bay Packers have been playing in their current stadium the longest.

*************************

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here……..

Astros 3, Phillies 2
Verlander got 15 outs on 94 pitches, allowing one run.
Pena had three hits, including a home run.
Phillies scored two runs the last two games.
Astros lead series, 3-2; Game 4 is in Houston Saturday.

— Home plate umpire Jordan Baker took a beating on ESPN Radio during this game; I’ll have to watch the replay, since I can’t watch the games live (thanks to Mission Broadcasting/DirecTV being greedy bastards) but Baker is 6-foot-8 and generally has trouble with lower pitches.

— When Alec Bohm homered for the Phillies in Game 3 Tuesday night, it was the 1,000th home run in World Series history.

Eagles 29, Texans 17
— Game was 14-14 at halftime.
— Eagles go-ahead TD drive was 17 yards after an INT.
— Philly won its first eight games (5-3 ATS), scoring 28.1 ppg.
— Eagles were 5-10 on 3rd down, Houston 2-9.
— Philly is 3-8 ATS last 11 games as a road favorite.

— Houston in first half: 25 plays, 177 yards, 14 points.
— Houston in second half: 33 plays, 129 yards, 3 points.
— Texans lost six of their last seven games SU (2-3 ATS last five).
— Texans have been outscored 97-63 in second half of games.
— 2nd-year QB Mills is 3-15-1 as an NFL starter.

— NFL favorites of 7+ points are 10-18 ATS this season.

— This was 7th time ever there was a World Series game/NFL game going on at same time, where the same two cities were involved in both games.

— The Amazon Prime halftime show has five people on their panel; halftime is 12-15 minutes long. Five people is too many; take two of those people, put them in the booth with Al Michaels, let Kirk Herbstreit do college games all the time, then the three people on the halftime set would each have more air time to talk about football.

Rice 37, UTEP 30
Rice threw 23-yard TD pass with 0:25 left for the win.
Owls outgained UTEP, 502-313.
Rice survived a minus-2 turnover ratio (0-2).
With Texans/Astros playing at same time, not lot of fans at this game in Houston.

Coastal Carolina 35, Appalachian State 28
Chanticleers led 35-14 with 12:00 left, held on for the win.
Both teams averaged over 10 yards/pass attempt
Coastal ran ball for 192 yards (4.3 yards/carry)

— 76ers’ star James Harden strained a tendon in his foot, is out for a month.

— Ravens’ WR Rashod Bateman, Saints’ WR Michael Thomas are both likely out for the year with foot injuries.

— NFC South standings:
Falcons 4-4, Bucs/Saints both 3-5, Carolina 2-6.
Whoever wins this division might be a home underdog in their first playoff game.

— Betting trend: Army plays Air Force Saturday; since 2005, when service academies play each other, the under is 42-9-1 in those games.

— 6 of the 14 SEC basketball teams changed coaches this season; when games start next week, going to be lot of new faces, both in uniform and on the sidelines.

— Brooklyn Nets suspended Kyrie Irving for at least five games; this is expensive. Irving is making $36,934,550 this season; that works out to $450,421.34 per game. Multiply that by five, and Irving is being docked at least $2,252,106.70 because he wouldn’t say “I’m sorry”

Think about THAT for a second.

This is me being a wise guy, but you can tell Irving isn’t married; if he was, his butt would’ve apologized a few days ago, and he’d have $2,252,106.70 more in his bank account going forward.

Orlando 130, Golden State 129— Warriors are 0-5 on road this season; they led this game by 16 in the third quarter.

— Underdogs are 23-9-1 ATS in MAC football games so far this season; 14-4-1 on road, 9-5 at home.

— Tough week off the field in the NFL:
RIP to Ray Guy, 72, one of the best punters in NFL history.
RIP to John McVay, 91; he coached the Giants in the 70’s, is Sean McVay’s grandfather.
RIP to Adam Zimmer, 38, son of former Vikings coach Mike Zimmer.

TCU 34, Texas Tech 24— Horned Frogs ran ball for 234 yards; they’re the quietest 9-0 team you’ve ever seen.
