Saturday’s 6-pack

College hoop teams that force the most turnovers:
26.4%— Iowa State
25.6%— UNLV
25.0%— UCLA
24.8%— VCU
24.8%— Stephen F Austin
24.7%— Missouri

Quote of the Day
“If Tyree Appleby doesn’t have an NIL deal with @Applebees, what is the point of NIL?”
Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports, talking about the Wake Forest star

Saturday’s quiz
What player ran the opening kickoff of a Super Bowl back for a touchdown?
Hint: His team lost that game

Friday’s quiz
Cal-Santa Barbara’s basketball team is known as the Gauchos.

Thursday’s quiz
Ken Stabler played QB for the Raiders the first time they won a Super Bowl.

**************************

Saturday’s Den: 12 of my favorite Super Bowls………

13) Steelers 31, Rams 19:
— Even though they lost, it was first time Rams made it to a Super Bowl.
— Rams led 19-17 after third quarter; they were 10.5-point underdogs.
— This was Pittsburgh’s fourth Super Bowl title in six years.

12) Giants 17, Patriots 14:
— The thought of a New England team going 17-0 was nauseating.
— Subway sandwich chain has been sued by people who claim the “tuna” in Subway’s tuna subs is something other than tuna.
— I used to eat lot of Subway subs, until they hired Bill Belichick to do commercials, then I switched to Jersey Mike’s. Much better subs.

11) Chiefs 23, Vikings 7:
— NFL Films’ highlight film of this game made KC coach Hank Stram a household name.
— “Keep matriculating the ball down the field, boys” NFL Films struck gold miking the coach.
— This was the last game before AFL/NFL merged; Chiefs were a 12-point dog.

10) Raiders 32, Vikings 14:
— Minnesota made the Rams’ life miserable in 70’s playoff games, so this was a good result.
— This was my senior year in HS; I played in a CYO basketball league where the games were played in a Jewish Community Center. Go figure.
— We had a game scheduled at same time as the Super Bowl; our refs didn’t show up until after the football game. I sat in a lounge and ate chips/drank soda watching the football game. Needless to say, I was fairly useless during the basketball game.

9) In his ten Super Bowls, Tom Brady’s team scored one first quarter TD; this was the first Super Bowl where Brady’s team led after the first quarter (1-4-5). He won seven of the ten games SU.

8) Patriots 13, Rams 3
— Game was 3-3 in 4th quarter; the Rams being in this game made it great for me.
— This was Sean McVay’s second year as Rams’ coach; before that, Rams had 13 consecutive losing seasons. Winning is more fun than losing.

7) Only twice has the team that lost a Super Bowl won the big game the next season:
— Dallas lost Super Bowl V to the Colts, beat Miami the next year.
— New England lost Super Bowl LII to Philadelphia, won the Super Bowl the next year.

6) Saints 31, Colts 17:
— Saints were in the NFL 21 years before they played a playoff game.
— Someone made a commercial of Saints fans’ reactions at home parties when Tracy Porter ran back a pick-6 74 yards to clinch the game for New Orleans. It is a great commercial.

5) Chiefs 31, 49ers 20:
— Whenever the 49ers lose, I’m probably pretty happy.
— I’ve never heard anyone say they dislike Andy Reid, and I know someone who hates Ray Romano. Reid won his first world title in his 21st year as a head coach.
— 49ers led this game 20-10 after third quarter.

4) Eagles 41, Patriots 33:
— Nick Foles is 29-29 as a regular season starter, 4-2 in playoff games.
— He’s played for six teams in 11 years, but will always be a Philly legend.
— Foles caught a TD pass on a trick play to give Philly a 22-12 halftime lead.

3) Steelers 27, Cardinals 23:
— Arizona lost, but getting Cardinals here put Kurt Warner in the Hall of Fame.
— Warner threw a 64-yard TD pass to Larry Fitzgerald with 2:37 left to put Arizona ahead.
— Big Ben won it with a 6-yard TD pass to Santonio Holmes with 0:35 left.

2) Rams 23, Bengals 20:
— Stafford-to-Kupp with 1:25 left was the game-winning score.
— Bengals led 20-13 midway thru third quarter.
— Sean McVay is the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl.
— Second year in row the host team won Super Bowl; before that, it had never happened.

1) Rams 23, Titans 16:
— 73-yard TD pass from Warner to Bruce with 1:54 left put Rams ahead.
— Mike Jones tackles a Titans’ WR on 1-yard line as time ran out.
— Warner capped off a storybook season, throwing for 414 yards.
— 13 years later, then-Titans’ coach Jeff Fisher was hired as coach of the Rams.

Sunday’s 6-pack

College hoop teams that score highest %age of their points on foul line:
25.7%— Tarleton State
25.4%— Texas A&M
24.8%— Rio Grande Valley
24.4%— NC-Wilmington
24.0%— Rhode Island
23.9%— Nevada

Quote of the Day
“It was extremely difficult because I was personally extremely close with Andy. Obviously we were very, very successful together. He represented everything that I believe in. … I just think the best thing for Andy at the time — and I think his family probably thought the best thing for Andy at the time — was to have a different environment for his family at that moment in time.”
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, talking about when he fired Andy Reid

Sunday’s quiz
In the TV show The West Wing, what actor played Vice President John Hoynes?

Saturday’s quiz

Friday’s quiz

***************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a full day of college basketball…….

— SEC
Alabama 77, Auburn 69— No one knows who is going to win the NCAA Tournament, but right now, I’m pretty sure Alabama is the best team. They outscored Auburn 25-12 over final 9:35 of this game, improving to 12-0 in SEC games.

In the first half of this game, Auburn got most of the loose balls; they were quicker, they were playing with urgency and it looked like they would pull an upset. Didn’t happen.

My biggest red flag on Alabama is their youth; they’re #259 in experience, #283 in continuity, but they play the fastest pace in the country and they contest shots (#2 eFG% defense).

Missouri 86, Tennessee 85— I’m surprised, not shocked that Mizzou won this game, but I was totally shocked that the Tigers scored 86 points in Knoxville.

Kid on Missouri hit a 30-foot runner at the buzzer for the win; they blew a 17-point second half lead— Tennessee led by 6 with 4:32 left to play. Mizzou was 14-26 on the arc, Tennessee was 12-28. Vols outscored Missouri 25-12 on foul line.

The last eight years, Missouri was 43-99 in SEC games; this year, they’re 7-5. Dennis Gates has to be in the running for National lCoach of the Year.

Georgia 75, Kentucky 68— Kentucky is 16-9, 7-5; right now, they wouldn’t make the NCAA Tournament, but there are still three weeks left in regular season, plus the SEC tourney for them to make some noise.

Vanderbilt 88, Florida 80— Underdogs were 5-2 SU in SEC Saturday; Gators were upset after this game, when they shot 2-20 on the arc, 14-23 on foul line. Florida has now lost four of its last five games, is 13-12 overall, 6-6 in SEC.

— ACC
Virginia 69, Duke 62 OT— if you took Duke +6 in this game, skip to the next conference.

Duke big man Filipowski played 30:00, didn’t score a point. Duke led by 5 with 9:01 left; ref called a foul at the buzzer with the score tied that would’ve given Duke two free throws, but after they reviewed the play, they said no foul, and they played overtime.

Virginia was 3-12 on the foul line in regulation; they start four seniors. Duke had 22 turnovers, Virginia 9. Cavaliers have won nine of their last ten games.

Duke is 17-8, 8-6, starting four freshmen with a first-year coach.

Wake Forest 71, Georgia Tech 70— Huge sigh of relief from Winston-Salem; Bracketology has Deacons in the “next 4 out” category. A loss to Georgia Tech would’ve been a dagger. Tech led this game by 5 with 2:07 left; it was a narrow escape for Wake Forest.

— Big Sky
Portland State 88, Northern Arizona 87— Check out SportsCenter for the highlight; Portland State threw a 90-foot baseball pass (lefty) to a guy who caught the ball falling backwards, maybe 10-12 from the hoop. As he fell down, he just threw the ball up towards the hoop, and the damn thing went in at the buzzer, giving the Vikings a very unlikely win.

Portland State led by 13 with 9:36 left, blew the lead; they swept Northern Arizona this year, with both wins by a point.

— Big X
Oklahoma State 64, Iowa State 56— Cowboys have won seven of last eight games; they’ve got the #5 eFG% defense in country and are making their case to be in the Field of 68. Iowa State has lost six of its last nine games, after a 13-2 start.

Texas Tech 71, Kansas State 63— Tech is 3-2 in its last five games, after an 0-8 skid; they’re the best 13-12 team in the country. After a blistering start, K-State has lost four of its last six games and is in a 3-way tie for 4th in the Big X.

I’m going to have a hard time evaluating K-State for the NCAA’s; Nevada is the only top 100 team they played out of conference, and they beat the Wolf Pack in overtime. Wildcats are #326 in country in bench minutes; are they getting tired?

— Big East
Creighton 56, UConn 53— Bluejays basically used 7 guys in a slow-paced (60 possessions) game; an 8th guy played only 4:00. Creighton doesn’t foul much; their opponents score only 12% of their points on foul line, 2nd-fewest in country. Bluejays have won eight games in a row; they’re 11-2 in last 13, after a 6-6 start.

— Conference USA
Florida Atlantic 90, Louisiana Tech 85 OT— Owls blew a 15-point lead with 8:58 left; they’re 24-2, 14-1 in conference. Bracketology has them as a 9-seed, which means they can probably afford one more loss, before they’ll be sweating on Selection Sunday.

FAU is #13 in country in bench minutes, so playing in conference tournament should be good for them. Winning the conference tournament would obviously eliminate a lot of stress.

— Ivy League
Brown 80, Cornell 66— This win puts Bears in the top 4, which would qualify them for the Ivy League tournament, but they have four games left, three of which are against the other three teams in the top four.

Yale and Princeton are tied for first place, at 7-3, with Penn/Brown at 6-4, Cornell/Dartmouth at 5-5.

— Mountain West
San Jose State 69, Utah State 64— Tim Miles is your Mountain West Coach of the Year; San Jose is 15-10, 6-6 in conference, which doesn’t sound like much, but consider this:

San Jose State has finished over .500 once in this century (17-16 in 2011) and they were 5-11 in conference games that year, Since 1997, the Spartans are 93-355 in conference games.

93 wins. 355 losses. This year they’re 6-6; they just signed 6’8 F Diogo Seixas from Portugal, who scored 18.5 ppg, shooting 44% on the arc, while grabbing 6.5 rebounds per game at the 2022 FIBA U18 European Championship.

Things are looking up for San Jose State.

— Pac-12
Stanford 88, Arizona 79— Cardinal made 10-18 on arc, scored 1.31 points/possession and pulled a big upset. Arizona was 14-35 on the arc, 14-26 inside the arc; they only played seven guys.

Oregon State 61, USC 58— Bad loss for the Trojans, who got swept in Oregon and are headed towards the bubble. Trojans are shooting 29.2% on the arc in Pac-12 games; no bueno.

— Sun Belt
Troy 80, Louisiana 65— Ragin’ Cajuns got outscored 50-30 in second half; loss gives Southern Miss a 2-game lead atop the Sun Belt standings.

Southern Miss is 12-2 in Sun Belt; the last three years, they were 10-43 in conference games. Jay Ladner is your Sun Belt Coach of the Year.

— WAC
New Mexico State suspended its basketball program and put the coaching staff on paid administrative leave; they cancelled Saturday’s game with Cal Baptist.

The school’s chancellor pulled the plug on this season, after receiving reports of alleged hazing incidents within the team. This follows a deadly November shooting involving forward Mike Peake.

New Mexico State has been in eight of the last ten NCAA Tournaments, under three different head coaches. This year’s coach in his first year; sounds like he may not get a second year.

Quote of the Day
“He looks like he could be conference Player of the Year. I thought he would be a very good freshman, but [Tommy] Kuhse was also so good last year. He was so good at the end of games. Now, though, they have a real dude. He’s answered those questions. The shots he was hitting against Gonzaga. Patty Mills and [Matthew] Dellavedova are the only two guys they’ve had who were this good as freshmen. He has unbelievable confidence.”
Unnamed WCC basketball coach, talking about Saint Mary’s freshman Aidan Mahaney

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up Super Sunday…….

— Patrick Mahomes is on a path to be the best quarterback in NFL history. If you were choosing sides to start a team with every NFL player ever, which QB are you taking before Mahomes? He’s already played in three Super Bowls, won two of them and he’s only 27.

Chiefs 38, Eagles 35
— Chiefs in first half: 21 plays, 128 yards, 7 points.
— They doinked a 42-yard FG off the left upright.
— Chiefs in 2nd half: 34 plays, 221 yards, 24 points.
— Only 8 of Kansas City’s 53 plays were on third down.

— Eagles in first half: 45 plays, 265 yards, 24 points,
— Chiefs also scored a defensive TD in the first half.
— Eagles in 2nd half: 29 plays, 142 yards, 10 points.
— Philly had two scoring drives that each took 7:00+ off clock.

— Eagles converted 11-17 on third down, 2-2 on fourth down.
— Philly ran 72 plays for 417 yards, Kansas City 53 for 340.
— Eagles had 17 first downs in first half; Chiefs ran 20 plays in first half.

— Thursday’s game in Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season will be played in Kansas City.

— The NFL’s dream game; close, high-scoring Super Bowl with a dramatic ending.

— I had forgotten that the opening kickoff of the Super Bowl seems like an afterthought with all the pre-game hoopla, the coin toss, a million commercials. Last year when the Rams were playing, it was so annoying. “Just start the damn game!!!” was heard in my living room…….lol

— People bet on the coin toss of the Super Bowl; I remember a friend telling me he bet on the coin toss of a Super Bowl and I rolled my eyes. He immediately called up and doubled down on that bet, which he won.

— Indianapolis Colts are apparently hiring Eagles’ OC Shane Steichen as their new coach this week.

Arizona Cardinals are going to interview Eagles’ DC Jonathan Gannon for their head coaching opening; if they hire Gannon, Eagles will be the first team since the 2013 Bengals to lose both their coordinators to NFL head coaching jobs in the same offseason.

— 49ers’ QB Brock Purdy has his elbow surgery on February 22; they said the surgery has a six-month recovery time, so Purdy will miss most, if not all of training camp.

— Kind of ironic that in a year where all the Hall of Fame inductees except one are defensive players, coach Don Coryell is being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Coryell was a great, great offensive coach; he was 42-27-1 coaching the Cardinals, 69-56 coaching the Chargers, after he went 36-8 coaching San Diego State.

Coaches like Joe Gibbs, Jim Mora Sr, Jim Hanifan, Al Saunders, Ray Perkins all worked under Coryell. This honor is long overdue.

— Carolina Panthers hired former NFL QB Josh McCown as an assistant coach; there were rumors that Houston had wanted to hire the inexperienced McCown as head coach, but that obviously never happened.

Marquette 89, Georgetown 75— Hoyas are now 1-34 in their last 35 conference games; their streak of covering the spread also ended here, at 7 straight covers.

Southern Miss 76, UL-Monroe 67— Golden Eagles have won nine games in a row; they’re 12-2 in their first year in Sun Belt, after going 10-43 the last three years in Conference USA.

— Dayton Flyers have a player from Mongolia, Mike Sharavjamts, whose father was the first Asian Harlem Globetrotter. Dayton has a Mongolian fans’ Facebook page with 15,000 followers, as basketball becomes more popular in that country.

— Not only was Nevada basketball coach Steve Alford a great shooter in his playing days, he’s become a very good coach and he also has a single-digit golf handicap. Nevada is 20-6, 10-3 in the Mountain West— they’re shooting 80.1% on the foul line, #3 in the country.

— San Antonio Spurs have lost 12 games in a row; they’re 14-43, an awful team, but hey, they traded for seven 2nd round draft picks last week. Their G-League team could be really good next season.

— Toronto Blue Jays signed SS Bo Bichette to a 3-year deal worth $33.6M, which eliminates his arbitration years.

— Houston Astros signed P Cristian Javier to a 5-year, $64M deal. He can block trades to 10 teams in 2026-27.

— Arizona Diamondbacks gave lefty reliever Andrew Chafin a one-year, $5.5M deal, with a team option for 2024.

— Good news: There is more fun coming this week. Spring training starts, more college basketball with the conference tournaments only 2-3 weeks away, NBA’s All-Star Game, the XFL starts up and the Daytona 500 is next week. Lot of stuff going on.

Tuesday’s 6-pack

Here is an NFL Mock Draft that I saw on the Interweb Monday:
6) Lions— Christian Gonzalez, CB, Oregon
5) Seahawks— Will Anderson, EDGE, Alabama
4) Cardinals— Jalen Carter, T, Georgia
3) Colts— Will Levis, QB, Kentucky
2) Texans— CJ Stroud, QB, Ohio State
1) Bears— Bryce Young, QB, Alabama

Quote of the Day
“Be decisive. Right or wrong, make a decision. The road is paved with flat squirrels who couldn’t make a decision.”
Anonymous

Tuesday’s quiz
The NBA absorbed four teams from the ABA when the ABA folded after the 1975-76 season; which four teams?

Monday’s quiz
Donovan McNabb was the Eagles’ QB the first time Andy Reid coached in a Super Bowl.

Sunday’s quiz
In the TV show The West Wing, Tim Matheson played Vice President John Hoynes.

**************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

Miami 80, North Carolina 72— Miami won its last five games, scoring 84.8 ppg. Hurricanes are 21-5; if their uniforms said “DUKE” on them, people would be touting them as a national title contender.

Tar Heels were 5-31 on the arc; they’ve lost four of last five games, are shooting 29.5% on the arc in ACC play, last in league. Carolina is 1-5 against teams in the top 50. No one is touting them to win the national title.

Texas Tech 74, Texas 67— Tech has won four of its last six games, after an 0-8 skid; you watch them play, and you don’t see a 9th-place team, but that is where they are right now.

— Wednesday’s Minnesota-Michigan State basketball game was postponed because the campus in East Lansing has been shut down for a couple days, after an on-campus shooting Monday.

— Thinking back on the Super Bowl, it seems like having a coach who has been there before is a big deal; think about McVay vs Taylor last year, Reid vs Siranni Sunday. How to deal with the two weeks in between games, the unique halftime situation, all the pre-game hoopla; having experience helps.

— Nevada sportsbooks turned an $11.3M profit on the Super Bowl; they took $153M in bets.

— Advice to Chief fans: wait 4-6 weeks before buying your Super Bowl Champs paraphernalia. You can save a lot of $$$ that way; the prices go down as time goes on. They won’t stop sending you e-mails asking you to buy stuff, trust me on that.

— Patrick Mahomes’ team has trailed by 10+ points in 24 NFL games; Chiefs went 14-10 in those games.

— Looks like the Las Vegas Raiders will dump QB Derek Carr this week, which will help them save $25M towards next year’s salary cap.

— ESPN quotes Joe Lunardi’s Bracketology like it is gospel, which it isn’t; Lunardi does a good job with his brackets, but no one knows for sure what the Selection Committee will come up with 26 days from now.

This is a weird year; Florida Atlantic is in the Top 25, Kentucky, Duke and North Carolina are not in the Top 25.

— Last time the Pac-12 won a national title in basketball: 1997, when Arizona won. Last time the Big 14 won one was in 2000, when Michigan State won.

Since Michigan State’s title in 2000, here are the conferences that won national titles:
ACC— 8
Big East— 6
SEC— 3
Big X— 3 (the last two)
AAC— 1

— Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said Monday that he isn’t retiring, that he still plans to coach, but he won’t be back in South Bend next season. In other words, they fired him.

— In 1996, the Lerner family bought the Washington Nationals for $450M; Ted Lerner passed away this week at age 97, after a bout with pneumonia. Forbes estimates that the Nationals are worth around $2B, that’s billion, with a B.

— Major League Baseball made the “runner-on-2nd” extra inning rule a permanent thing in the regular season. I haven’t hated the rule as much as I first thought I would, but playing regular baseball in extra innings would be better.

— San Diego Padres/Philadelphia Phillies both have 15 players on rosters in next month’s World Baseball Classic. Will that disrupt their spring training? I’m thinking not.

— New Jersey Jets hired former Tennessee Titans OC Todd Downing as their new passing game coordinator. Downing spent three seasons in Oakland with Derek Carr, who is going to a new team next season, but then again, new Jets’ OC Nathaniel Hackett used to work with Aaron Rodgers, so who knows?

— New Orleans Pelicans’ F Zion Williamson is hurt again; in his four NBA seasons, he’s played in 114 of a possible 283 regular season games, that’s 40.3%. The best abilities are availability and dependability.

Williamson has scored 25.8 ppg in those 114 games, grabbed 7 rebounds a game. Pelicans could use him on the floor……..all the time.

— New Mexico State ended its basketball season, for off-court reasons; the WAC is going to treat the rest of their games this season as forfeits. Seems likely that they’ll be looking for a new coach in April; this is a program that has been in the NCAA Tournament eight times the last 11 years.

— Our update on college basketball referee John Higgins:
January 24— Penn State @ Rutgers
January 25— Utah State @ San Diego State— Long plane ride for a back/back
January 26— Utah @ Oregon State
January 28— California @ Stanford
January 29— Michigan State @ Purdue— Day game after long plane ride.
January 30— Baylor @ Texas
January 31— Kansas State @ Kansas

February 1— Northern Iowa @ Drake- A double overtime game!!! Eight games in nine nights, and a double overtime game on the 9th night.
February 2— Wisconsin @ Ohio State
February 4— Oklahoma @ West Virginia
February 5— Penn State @ Nebraska
February 7— Nevada @ New Mexico
February 8— San Diego State @ Utah State
February 9— USC at Oregon

February 11— Wyoming @ Boise State
February 13— Texas @ Texas Tech

He’s worked 16 games in 21 days, 71 games since November 7, which is 71 games in 100 days. He is 54-years old; why don’t NBA players play on back/back nights?
