Headlines of the Day
“FLIPPED THE BIRD”
New York Post

“Giants grab their fumble, but Eagles DROP THE BALL”
New York Daily News

Tuesday’s quiz
Rams have played in four Super Bowls, under four different head coaches; who are they?

Monday’s quiz
Joe Gibbs won three Super Bowls coaching Washington, playing three different QB’s; Doug Williams, Joe Theismann, Mark Rypien.

Sunday’s quiz
John Calipari has led three schools to the Final Four; Kentucky, Memphis and UMass.

************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

13) If I’m making the 2021 NFL schedule, the Sunday night game in Week 1 has to be Eagles at Giants, after Philadelphia openly tanked their Week 17 game Sunday night, which put Washington into the postseason instead of the Giants. Lot of hostility over that game; take advantage of it!!!

12) Stat of the Day: Patriots/Giants tied for fewest TD passes (12) in league this season; only ten of New England’s TD passes were thrown by quarterbacks.

11) Three NFL coaches were told to take a hike after Week 17 games (Jets, Jaguars, Chargers); there are six head coach openings right now (Texans, Falcons, Lions).

10) Here is a difficult trivia question, too tough for the daily quiz:

NFL record for most field goals in a game is 8, set in 2007 by Tennessee’s Rob Bironas.

2-part question (answers tomorrow):
a) (the easy part) Who was Tennessee’s coach that day?
b) (the hard part) Who was Tennessee’s QB that day?
(Hint: He once started a Super Bowl, but not for the Titans)

9) Rams’ QB John Wolford threw for 231 yards, ran for 56 more in LA’s 18-7 win over the Cardinals Sunday, making him the first NFL quarterback EVER to throw for 200+ yards and run for 50+ yards in his first NFL start.

Red flags for the Rams, besides their starting QB having a broken thumb:
— Rams haven’t scored an offensive TD in their last two games, despite being on the 1-yard line on three different drives.
— Rams scored a defensive TD in each of their last three wins; can’t depend on that happening a lot.

8) Speaking of quarterbacks, Wisconsin’s basketball team has four kids who were QB of their high school football team. In this age of specialization, it has to be unusual for a D-I hoop team to have lot of kids who played football in high school.

7) My friend Phil gave a me an outstanding piece of trivia Monday; the great singer Kris Kristoffersson was once a helicopter pilot in the Army- he quit as an English Literature teacher at West Point, in order to pursue songwriting in Nashville.

Before he struck it rich in music/acting, he got a job sweeping floors at Columbia Recording Studios in Nashville. From there, things worked out pretty well for him.

6) There are 150 Canadians playing Division I college basketball this year; there are 17 Canadians playing in the NBA right now.

5) While I was watching football Sunday, Steph Curry scored 62 points for Warriors, in their 137-122 win over Portland. Curry made 8-16 on the arc, 10-15 inside the arc, 18-19 on the foul line. He also had four assists and five rebounds.

it was the most points scored by any Warrior since Rick Barry scored 64 in a game in 1974.

4) North Carolina QB Sam Howell does not eat any type of meat except for chicken; no hamburgers, no steak, nada. Howell said he frequents Chick-fil-a, and he eats a lot of chicken tenders and nuggets. Lot of times, he brings his own chicken fingers to team dinners.

3) ACC teams went 0-6 in bowl games this year, first time since 1983 that ACC teams went winless in bowls- they were only 0-2 that year.

2) Alabama opened as a 7-point favorite over Ohio State in Monday’s national title game, with a total of 76.

1) During baseball season, I watch a lot of baseball, a lot. Was happy to see Monday that the Cubs hired Jon Sciambi as their new TV voice- he is excellent. Watching day games from Wrigley Field during the week is always a highlight, now they’ll be a little bit better.

Quote of the Day
“People give me a hard time, but the only meat I eat is chicken. It’s been like that my whole life. I really don’t know why. I started that when I was younger, but it’s something I’ve kind of just kept up through my whole life. Chicken is the only meat I eat, so I only go to restaurants that serve something with chicken on the menu.”
North Carolina QB Sam Howell

Wednesday’s quiz

Wednesday’s Den: Some early college basketball knowledge

This is another unusual college basketball season, but hopefully this season will play out until the end, which obviously didn’t happen last year. Here is some early knowledge……..

13) Michigan (4-0) is the only unbeaten team left in the Big 14; there are fewer turnovers in this league than in any league in the country. Lot of half-court basketball.

While I’m typing this up, I’m watching re-runs of the old TV show The West Wing, and who shows up on one episode but Michigan coach Juwan Howard, who shows up playing pick-up ball with the President and his staff. This was 1999; Howard was still an active player.

7-2 Rutgers looks like they’ll make the NCAA’s for first time since 1991.

12) Oklahoma State starts out 1-3 in Big X, after going 6-0 out of conference; Cowboys are #312 in experience, #280 in continuity. Their best player is freshman Cade Cunningham, who won’t be in college three months from now— he’ll be getting ready for the NBA Draft, but he’ll likely stay engaged here, since his brother is an assistant coach at Oklahoma State.

11) North Carolina is 6-4, 1-2 in the ACC; they’re experience team #325. Duke is off to a 3-2 start, 1-0 in ACC; they haven’t played since December 16, and are experience team #338. Seems like a bad year to have an inexperienced team.

10) Teams from the bigger conferences with the most experience:
AAC: Tulsa, SMU, East Carolina
ACC: Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Florida State
A-14: Richmond, Dayton, Saint Louis
Big East: Seton Hall, Georgetown, Creighton
Big 14: Wisconsin, Penn State, Michigan
Big X: Oklahoma, Iowa State, Texas
Pac-12: Oregon, Colorado, California
SEC: Missouri, Georgia, Ole Miss

9) Teams from the bigger conferences with the least experience:
AAC: Tulane, Memphis, Central Florida
ACC: Duke, Louisville, North Carolina
A-14: UMass, St Joe’s, LaSalle
Big East: Butler, St John’s, Marquette
Big 14: Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern
Big X: Kansas State, TCU, Oklahoma State
Pac-12: Washington State, Arizona, Utah
SEC: Auburn, Kentucky, LSU

8) Maybe this category is more important than experience; continuity. How long have teams been together. Teams that cobble together transfers may have more experience, but they’re still getting to know each other.

Teams from the bigger conferences with the most
AAC: East Carolina, Memphis, South Florida
ACC: Georgia Tech, Clemson, Florida State
A-14: Richmond, Duquesne, Saint Louis
Big East: Villanova, Creighton, UConn
Big 14: Wisconsin, Rutgers, Illinois
Big X: Texas, West Virginia, Oklahoma
Pac-12: UCLA, Utah, Stanford
SEC: Missouri, South Carolina, Texas A&M

7) Montana Grizzlies started out Big Sky play 1-3; the four games were decided by a total of six points. Montana hasn’t finished under .500 in Big Sky play since 2004.

6) Seton Hall split its six non-conference games, but is off to a 5-1 start in Big East play; their only conference loss was to Providence, in overtime. Overall, Pirates have played schedule #33 so far this season.

5) Two years ago, Washington was 27-9, 15-3 in Pac-12, a 9-seed in the NCAA’s, but since then, Huskies are 16-24, 5-16 in league games. Washington is 1-7 this season; their only win is over #280 Seattle.

Oregon/UCLA are tied for first place at 3-0; Arizona is 9-1, 3-1 in conference, but they’re not going to the NCAA’s this year, and they’re experience team #281, so some regression is expected. Stanford won five of its last six games; they’re 6-3, vs schedule #40.

4) Kentucky is 2-6; one win was in double OT, the other over #275 Morehead State. Wildcats are #339 in experience, turning ball over 22.8% of time (#288)- lack of a true point guard seems to be an issue.

Tennessee is 7-1, with wins over Colorado, Cincinnati, Missouri; they defend very well, have overcome some COVID issues already.

3) Teams who take highest %age of their shots behind the arc:
58.6%- Wofford
53.9%- Evansville
52.4%- UNLV
52.3%- Akron
51.9%- Florida International, Auburn

2) San Diego State is off to a 7-2 start, but they led 33-7 in one of the games they lost. You wouldn’t think the #8 team in experience would blow a lead like that. Utah State/Boise State would appear to be San Diego State’s biggest challengers in the Mountain West.

UNLV hasn’t played since December 5th; they were off to a 1-4 start anyway- no depth.

1) Tulsa won its last five games after a 1-3 start; their last three D-I wins are over Houston, Memphis, Cincinnati, all quality wins. Golden Hurricane is #34 experience team that has played schedule #57- they force turnovers 22.3% of the time.

8-1 Houston is favored in the AAC; 6-4 Memphis has been a bit of a disappointment.

Thursday’s 6-pack
Order for the 2021 NFL Draft:

1) Jacksonville
2) NJ Jets
3) Miami (from Houston)
4) Atlanta
5) Cincinnati
6) Philadelphia

Americans who have died from COVID-19: 354,106
PLEASE wear a mask (over your nose/mouth) when you go out.

Quote of the Day
“I started today thinking about how we’re going to guard Lou Williams without fouling him. Suddenly, that didn’t seem very important when I turned on the TV. … It’s just a clear reminder that the truth matters in our country.”
Steve Kerr

Thursday’s quiz
What year did the designated hitter come into the major leagues?

Wednesday’s quiz
Michael Jordan was the 3rd pick in the 1984 NBA Draft; Hakeem Olajuwon was taken #1 and Sam Bowie was taken #2

Tuesday’s quiz
Rams have played in four Super Bowls, under four different head coaches; Ray Malavasi, Dick Vermeil, Mike Martz, Sean McVay

****************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

I feel kind of stupid posting this article about sports on such a depressing day for our country, but this is what I do, and maybe it can provide some distraction for a couple of minutes.

Prayers go out to police and military who are trying to keep the peace. We appreciate you.

13) I mention this every now and then because I’m fascinated by how nomadic some football coaches are. This is the career path of Jedd Fisch, new coach of the Pac-12’s Arizona Wildcats.

1997: PK Yonge HS (Florida)— Defensive coordinator
1998: New Jersey Red Dogs, Arena League— WR coach
1999-2000: U of Florida— Graduate assistant
2002-03: Houston Texans— Defensive quality control
2004-07: Baltimore Ravens— Offensive assistant
2008: Denver Broncos— WR coach
2009-10: U of Minnesota— Offensive coordinator/QBs coach

2010: Seattle Seahawks— QBs coach
2011-12: Miami, FL— Offensive coordinator/QBs coach
2013-14: Jacksonville Jaguars— Offensive coordinator
2015-16: U of Michigan— Passing game coordinator/QB-WR coach
2017: UCLA— Offensive coordinator/QBs coach, then interim head coach
2018-19: Los Angeles Rams— Assistant offensive coordinator
2020: New England Patriots— QBs coach

The guy must be great at packing. Now he makes $2.2M a year.

12) Quite a stat about the Green Bay Packers this year:
— Aaron Rodgers threw 48 TD passes.
— Green Bay’s punter punted 46 times.

11) Stephen Curry missed a foul shot the other night, ending a streak of 80 consecutive makes; last time an NBA player had made 80+ free throws in a row was Dirk Nowitzki, in 2010.

10) Washington QB Alex Smith is just the 5th quarterback in NFL history to lead three different teams to the playoffs; Chiefs, 49ers were the others.

9) Random fact of the day: More people live in DeKalb County (Georgia) than in the whole state of Wyoming.

8) QB JT Daniels will come back to play for the Georgia Bulldogs next fall.

7) OF Robbie Grossman banks $10M for two years from Detroit. The 8-year veteran has a .350 career on-base percentage. Detroit will be his fourth MLB team.

6) Miami Dolphins’ offensive coordinator Chan Gailey resigned/got fired Wednesday, meaning Miami will have its third OC in three years next season. Continuity helps NFL teams, especially where young QB’s are concerned.

5) NFL teams who played rookies the most snaps on offense this season:
1,130— Chargers, Cowboys
1,077— Broncos

4) PGA Tour starts Thursday, with the Sentry Tournament of Champions, so daytime TV gets a little bit better on Thursdays/Fridays.

3) Wednesday would’ve been Ralph Branca’s 94th birthday; Branca pitched in the major leagues for 12 years, going 88-68, mostly for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He made three All-Star teams, but is best known for giving up a walk-off homer to Bobby Thomson in a 1951 NL playoff game.

2) My dad grew up in New York City, was a huge Brooklyn Dodger fan; when I was a young person, I knew way too much about the Brooklyn Dodgers, seeing how they moved to LA three years before I was born. There is a still a ceramic dish on my kitchen wall, painted with the field at Ebbets Field on it.

1) One of the coolest things I ever did was in 1990 or so, on a weekday afternoon. Ralph Branca was doing an appearance at Mohawk Mall in Niskayuna, a mall that no longer exists. So I call my dad and tell him to get ready, I was taking him somewhere, but didn’t tell him where.

It was eight miles from my dad’s house to Mohawk Mall; on the way, I tell him we’re going to meet Ralph Branca, and confirm if all the stories he told me over the years were true.

We get to the mall, and Mr Branca is sitting at a card table, not many people around, which was perfect. I introduce my dad to Mr Branca, and then stepped back and watched them talk for the next 15-20 minutes, about Ebbets Field, the Dodgers, Ernie Lombardi, old baseball stuff. It was tremendously tremendous.

He confirmed all of my dad’s stories, and then when some other people showed up, we said our goodbyes and went home. It couldn’t have gone any better. Happy birthday, Mr Branca.
