Derek Fisher learned a lot from Knicks
June 5, 2019
By The Associated Press

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) Derek Fisher admitted he learned a lot from his failed stint as coach of the New York Knicks. He's taking those lessons over to his new role as the head of the Los Angeles Sparks.

So far, it has paid off. The rookie WNBA coach has guided the Sparks to wins in two of the team's first three games, including Tuesday afternoon's hard-fought victory over the New York Liberty. He said it was one of the first times he's been back to New York since he was fired in 2016.

''There are things that I experienced while coaching here in New York that worked, and that didn't' work,'' he said after the 78-73 victory over the Liberty on Tuesday. ''The way I want to coach the game, the way I want to do things offensively and defensively.''

Fisher, who played in the NBA for 18 years, also feels he learned a valuable lesson on how to talk to players.

''When I got to New York as coach of the Knicks leaving the playing court I tried to create some distance between being the player and the coach,'' he said. ''At times, I needed to be closer to the individual players in terms of building relationships and having conversations and not feeling like I'm overstepping by trying to be closer to my players. That was a mistake in a sense because players need the personal relationship and connection with their head coach so that they can trust him.

''Now understanding that, my communication level with my players is now really overly communicating and building one-on-one relationships. Those are key things I learned."

His new team has been impressed with what they've seen so far from Fisher.

''It's refreshing. He comes with open eyes and respects us as players and what we're fighting for,'' Chiney Ogwumike said. ''Every experience is a new experience for him. I like his perspective. Basketball is just basketball. He brings an NBA perspective that's unique and may help us win games. Lot of teams in this league have huge playbooks. For him in the NBA, it was just basketball. Matchups, isolations and defensive core principles. We're just playing the game, not overthinking. We're improving our skills.''

Nneka Ogwumike echoed her sister's comments.

''I feel like I'm finally in the evolution of the game. It's funny because with the NBA and WNBA, yeah it's the sister league, but it's very different from the NBA,'' she said. ''Coach provides that cross-sectionality of the two. Bringing together the true foundation similarities that both leagues have and should have and don't have. It's extremely apparent in how our organization is being run now. He pays attention to detail in everything we do.''

Fisher is also learning about the difficulties that WNBA teams and players face. The Sparks played Friday, had to practice early Saturday morning because they had to be off the court by 11 a.m. because they don't own the facility that they practice at. They had a season ticket holder event, then flew commercial across the country Sunday morning and didn't get to their hotel until 7 p.m. that night.

''It's not easy to be in the WNBA,'' he said.

Fisher also didn't know how tight a rookie's schedule is going from the Final Four to the draft to the city they are playing in soon after.

''They definitely have it a lot more difficult then NBA guys,'' he said.

Fisher was emotional after the win over New York on Tuesday. Even though the Liberty aren't owned by James Dolan anymore and the game wasn't played at Madison Square Garden, it still had a lot of meaning.

''He didn't want to talk about it till after the game, how much it meant to him'' Chiney Ogwumike said. ''He has a lot of memories here, good ones, bad ones. Where we are right now, in the present moment, is where we're supposed to be. ... This win is a testament to his journey, not only as a coach, but a man as well.''

Fisher said he told his story to the team so they could understand his journey.

''The New York part I shared with them about how life throws things at you sometimes. Don't plan for it. You can't expect to get embarrassed. You failed. It didn't work out,'' Fisher said. ''How you have to just keep pushing and learn from it. Try to get better so that you're better prepared for it. That's the best part about being back here, not sticking it to New York. I loved my time here in the city. The fans. I have nothing negative to say about being back here.''

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) Jonquel Jones scored 18 points, Alyssa Thomas had 11 points, 12 rebounds and six assists and the Connecticut Sun beat the Los Angeles Sparks 89-77 on Thursday night.

Jones gave Connecticut a 21-point lead with 3:22 left in the third quarter, but Los Angeles pulled within 81-77 after Nneka Ogwumike secured a loose ball under the basket and put it in. She stole it at the other end but after the Sparks threw it out of bounds, Thomas scored in the paint with 34.8 seconds left to give Connecticut a six-point lead.

Courtney Williams scored 12 points in the first half to help Connecticut (4-1) build a 43-32 lead and she finished with 15 points. Jasmine Thomas added 17 points and Shekinna Stricklen 10. Connecticut has won nine straight regular-season home games.

Nneka Ogwumike had 21 points and 10 rebounds and former Sun star Chiney Ogwumike added 19 for Los Angeles (2-2).

Chiney Ogwumike only missed two shots in her first game as an opponent at Mohegan Sun Arena after spending three seasons with the Sun. Chelsea Gray, coming off a career-best 29 points on Tuesday, scored four points with six assists.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Odyssey Sims scored 15 points and Lexie Brown added 12 to help the Minnesota Lynx hold off the Phoenix Mercury 58-56 on Thursday night.

Minnesota led by as many as 16 points, but did not score in the final four minutes to keep Phoenix in it. DeWanna Bonner's offensive rebound and free-throw line jumper pulled Phoenix within 58-56 with 1:34 remaining.

After several empty possessions, the Mercury called a timeout with 21.1 seconds left and Leilani Mitchell dribbled down the clock before Bonner was off on a contested 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Sylvia Fowles had 10 points and seven rebounds for Minnesota (4-1) to move past Tina Thompson for fourth on the WNBA's rebounding list.

Bonner was the only player in double figures for Phoenix (1-2) with 25 points - 12 coming in the fourth quarter. Phoenix was outscored 15-7 in the second quarter and shot 37% overall. Brittney Griner had four points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

Aces Notch Road Win in Atlanta
June 6, 2019

ATLANTA (AP) — Liz Cambage had 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists in her first start for Las Vegas and the Aces beat the Atlanta Dream 92-69 on Thursday night.

Las Vegas scored the first 10 points of the game, held a 19-2 lead, and it was 25-13 at the end of the first quarter after holding Atlanta to 5-of-15 shooting. The Aces led 49-25 at halftime, paced by A’ja Wilson’s 11 points, and Dearica Hamby’s steal and fast-break layup made it 81-51 early in the fourth quarter.

Hamby finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, Kayla McBride added 13 points, Wilson scored 11 and Kelsey Plum had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists for Las Vegas (2-2). Rookie Jackie Young had a game-high eight assists.

Brittney Sykes led Atlanta (1-3) with 15 points and Elizabeth Williams reached 800 career rebounds. Tiffany Hayes was held to seven points on 3-of-14 shooting. Atlanta, which swept the three-game series last season, has dropped three in a row for the first time since the 2017 season.

Friday’s 6-pack

College football spreads for games on Nov 29-30:

— Texas Tech @ Texas (-10)

— Washington State @ Washington (-9)

— Notre Dame (-5.5) @ Stanford

— Ohio State @ Michigan (-3.5)

— Florida State @ Florida (-14)

— Texas A&M @ LSU (-7.5)

Quotes of the Day
“You were not born a winner, and you were not born a loser. You are what you make yourself be.”
Lou Holtz

Friday’s quiz
In this century, how many horses have won the Triple Crown?

Thursday’s quiz
Klay Thompson played his college basketball at Washington State.

Wednesday’s quiz
Last time the NBA Finals ended in a 4-0 sweep was last year, when the Warriors swept Cleveland; last time before that was 2007, when San Antonio swept the Cavaliers.

*******************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here……

13) The person who shoved Toronto Raptors’ G Kyle Lowry, then cursed at him at Wednesday’s NBA Finals game in Oakland wasn’t just any fan; it was Mark Stevens, who is a minority owner of the Warriors. Stevens was tossed from the game Wednesday, and won’t be at any of the games the rest of the series.

Not only that, but Stevens got fined $500K and was banned from the NBA for a year.

12) Atlanta Braves signed P Dallas Keuchel to a one-year deal worth $13M, which probably leaves Bronx and the Phillies as main trade partners with the Giants for Madison Bumgarner.

11) Eagles signed QB Carson Wentz to a 4-year, $128M contract that could escalate to $144M; $107M of it is guaranteed. Funny thing is that Eagles won Super Bowl two years ago, without Wentz, but Nick Foles is in Jacksonville now, so Wentz has to stay healthy now.

10) 1,200 kids just got taken in the baseball draft; 172 from California, 129 from Florida, 113 from Texas, so 34.5% of players taken were from those three states.

9) Kenyon Martin Jr., son of the former NBA player, is skipping playing basketball at Vanderbilt to try professional ball overseas. Martin is a 6-6 forward; he is the second prospect in two weeks to pass up college ball to play overseas for money.

8) College basketball is moving the 3-point line distance from 20 feet, 9 inches to the international basketball distance of 22-1 3/4; they did this in the NIT the last two years- under went 64-60 in those games.

Last year, 38.7% of shots taken were 3’s; will this result in less 3’s being tried?

This season, they will also reset the shot clock to 20 seconds (instead of a full 30) after an offensive rebound, which will result in more possessions, which helps the over.

7) Blues 2, Bruins 1— Back in January, a guy named Scott Berry bet $400 on the Blues to win the Stanley Cup, when they were 250-1 to win the championship. Now St Louis is one win away from winning its first Stanley Cup title. Berry would bank $100,000 if that happens.

6) Former Steelers’ backup QB Landry Jones may surface next in XFL tryouts; one thing the AAF didn’t have was high-quality QB’s.

5) For what it is worth, ESPN’s new gambling show Daily Wager is not allowed to use NFL team names or logos, but they use names/logos for all the other sports.

4) Brooklyn Nets traded Allen Crabbe, the #17 pick and a protected first in 2020 to the Atlanta Hawks for Taurean Prince and a 2021 second-round pick.

Nets clear $18M in additional salary cap space for July, which gives Brooklyn $46M in salary cap space to sign a max free agent.

Hawks now have three picks (#’s 8, 10 and 17) in this month’s draft.

3) Rockies, Dodgers, Pirates are tied for major league lead, with 13 home-grown players each on their 25-man rosters. Houston leads MLB with 22 players on their 40-man roster.

2) News item: Two female acquaintances vanished with more than half a million dollars in jewelry from Jets’ RB Le’Veon Bell’s Florida home.

Lot of ways to go with this one; not every day someone has two “girlfriends” over to the house. Fact that Bell left to go to the gym and left the ladies in the house seem to indicate that they aren’t escorts; if they are escorts, then Bell is a nominee for immediate induction into the Imbecile Hall of Fame.

1) When MLB puts in the 3-batter minimum rule for relief pitchers in the near future, I’ll be glad that I’ll never have to watch some of these cruddy lefty relievers who are in the majors for one reason only— supposedly they can get lefties out.

Dallas Wings at Indiana Fever (-4.5, 155.5)

The Fever have been the best Over plays in the WNBA to start the season, topping the total in all three of their games so far in 2019. Granted, playing the New York Liberty and their dismal defense twice has helped that cause.

Indiana runs into another league bottom feeder when it hosts the winless Dallas Wings Friday. The Wings are 0-2 out of the gate and while their offense ranks among the worst in the WNBA, they’ve hung their hat on defense, allowing just 73 points against in those contests – on par with their defensive efforts in the preseason.

The Fever, which are scoring 83.3 points per game to start the schedule (second in the league), are more focused on defense to start the season. Indiana allowed only 63 points against per contest through three exhibition games and have held opponents to just 40 percent shooting in their first three regular season outings.

"Top of mind is to continue on the defensive end of the floor," head coach Pokey Chatman told the IndyStar.com. "Early in the season, everyone is trying to figure things out offensively. ... It's really about us and sticking to that defensive message of being a dirt-work, blue collar team."

On top of that defensive focus for both teams, neither squad is much of a threat from beyond the arc. The Fever and Wings rank 11th and 12th (the WNBA only has a dozen teams) in 3-pointers made and are also at the bottom of the league in 3-pointers attempted.

PREDICTION:
Under 155.5

Washington Mystics at New York Liberty (+9.5, 164.5)

The Mystics have enjoyed the friendly confines of the brand-new Entertainment and Sports Arena, putting up scores of 96 and 103 points in their last two home stands, but take that high-scoring show on the road to White Plains, New York Friday.

Washington is the WNBA’s top offense, even after a shaky season opener in Connecticut in which the team shot just 37 percent from the field and went 3 for 21 from 3-point range. However, the Mystics were missing All-Star Elena Delle Donne, Aerial Powers and rookie Kiara Leslie in that debut.

Delle Donne and Powers are both back in the lineup and fueling Washington’s scoring attack, which had five players in double figures in an 18-point win over Chicago. The Mystics will be without reserves Emma Meesseman and Kim Mestdagh for Friday’s game (playing in Women’s EuroBasket 2019) but that depth and New York’s poor defense will keep the scorekeepers busy.

The Liberty are 10th in points allowed in the WNBA to start the season and are coming off a bad loss to the L.A. Sparks Tuesday – a game in which everything was lining up for a N.Y. victory. The Sparks were on the road, down to 10 active players, missing key scorers, and playing an 11 a.m. ET tipoff (8 a.m. PT back in California). However, the Liberty leaked 42 points in the second half and lost by five, dropping them to 0-3 and 0-2-1 ATS. They’ll struggle against the deep offensive attack of Washington tonight.

PREDICTION:
Washington -9.5

Thursday’s picks: 2-0
Season to date: 9-4

Cloud has career night in Mystics' 94-85 win over Liberty
June 7, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) After losing in the WNBA Finals last year, Washington coach Mike Thibault tried to get a more balanced offense to complement Elena Delle Donne.

It's worked so far.

Natasha Cloud scored a career-high 26 points and the Mystics had five players in double figures to beat the New York Liberty 94-85 on Friday night.

''That's the biggest thing we've tried to accomplish this offseason,'' Thibault said of developing other scorers. ''Not allow teams to help off people. I felt some times last year we were playing four against five offensively because we didn't have consistency on the floor.''

Washington (3-1) held a 74-70 lead before scoring five straight points - the first three coming on a 3-point play by Tianna Hawkins. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough followed with a basket to make it a nine-point game. She finished with 15 points. Delle Donne had a relatively quiet night with 13.

''For our two top shooters, me and Kristi (Toliver), not to hit that many shots and have everyone else step up shows how dangerous we are,'' Delle Donne said. ''If we can get stops we know we can score no matter who's having an off night.''

The Liberty (0-4) have now lost 17 straight games dating to last season. The longest losing streak in WNBA history is 20 in a row by Tulsa in 2011.

''We're not focused on last year, we're looking at this year,'' said Rebecca Allen, who had all 13 of her points for New York in the second quarter.

New York could only get within five the rest of the way.

Tina Charles scored 27 points to lead New York.

The teams traded the lead five times in a high-scoring first half that saw Washington lead 50-49 at the break.

TIP-INS: Las Vegas coach Bill Laimbeer had his staff at the game Friday night scouting his former club. The Aces play at New York on Sunday. ... The Mystics have won four straight in the series. ... Cloud's previous best was 18 against Phoenix in 2016. ... Rookie Asia Durr had 11 points for New York.

Achonwa leads Fever to 79-64 win over Wings
June 7, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Natalie Achonwa had 17 points, 11 rebounds and five assists to help the Indiana Fever beat the Dallas Wings 79-64 on Friday night.

Kelsey Mitchell, Tiffany Mitchell and Candice Dupree each scored 14 points for the Fever. Dupree added 11 rebounds, giving Indiana two players with a double-double in the same game for the first time since an 82-75 loss to the Mystics on May 20, 2018.

The Fever (3-1) are off to their best start since 2012, when they started 4-0 and went on to win the WNBA title.

Dallas (0-3) made just three of its first 14 field-goal attempts and finished the first quarter shooting 31.6% (6 of 19).

The Fever opened a 56-34 lead when Tiffany Mitchell made two free throws with 3:43 left in the third quarter. The Wings scored 16 of the next 17 points, including seven by Isabelle Harrison, but Indiana answered with a 9-2 spurt, capped by Kelsey Mitchell's 3-pointer that made it 66-52 with 6:32 left.

Harrison finished with 18 points. She came into the game with five points on 2-of-10 shooting this season.

Saturday’s 6-pack

College football spreads for games on Nov 2:

— Miami @ Florida State (-1.5)

— Houston @ Central Florida (-14)

— Georgia (-3.5) vs Florida (@ Jacksonville)

— Virginia Tech @ Notre Dame (-16)

— Oregon (-1) @ USC

— Utah @ Washington (-8)

Quotes of the Day
“When you get used to coming up in the minor leagues, sometimes you don’t know who’s playing until an hour before the game, or sometimes 10 minutes.”
Toronto Raptors’ coach Nick Nurse

Saturday’s quiz
How many current NBA head coaches have a won a championship as a head coach?

Friday’s quiz
In this century, two horses have won the Triple Crown:
American Pharoah (2015)
Justify (2018)

Thursday’s quiz
Klay Thompson played his college basketball at Washington State.

*****************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

13) Raptors 105, Warriors 92— Golden State led this game 46-42 at the half, lowest scoring first half in a finals game in four years, but Toronto outscored them 63-46 in second half, and is now one win away from its first NBA title.

From sound of things, Kevin Durant won’t be playing in this series. Game 5 is Monday night in Toronto, where there could be a very big celebration.

12) McDonald’s locations in Eastern Canada give away free medium orders of french fries whenever the Toronto Raptors hit at least 12 3-pointers in a game.

According to The Financial Post, McDonald’s estimated 700,000 orders, but with the team playing so well, that number has ballooned to nearly three times the original estimate, resulting in approximately $5.4M (just over $4M US$) worth of fries.

11) Must admit, I don’t get the whole “opener” trend in baseball, unless you have one guy who could be a closer who you prefer to start a game with (Ryan Stanek in Tampa Bay).

Putting a minor leaguer in to pitch the first inning of a game just seems bleeping stupid, like you want to start off at a disadvantage. First inning is the only inning where you’re guaranteed to face the top of the other team’s order- you need a good pitcher there, not some stiff.

10) Batting the pitcher 8th is kind of the same thing, though at least I can see some logic there, but fewer teams are doing that now. Pretty soon this will be a moot point, because everyone will have the DH in the next couple years.

9) Houston Texans fired GM Brian Gaine, only 18 months after hiring him, meaning that coach Bill O’Brien is 42-38 in regular season games, 1-3 in playoffs, but has already seen two Texans GM’s fired.

From Ian Rappaport:
“My understanding is there was no one incident that created the opening. Houston did an evaluation of its football operations and believes — right or wrong — GM Brian Gaine was not good enough. Good, but not good enough.”

In other NFL GM news, the Jets hired Joe Douglas as their GM; he interviewed for the GM job in Houston when they hired Gaine.

8) ESPN’s Doug Kezirian pointed out that there is a gambler in Las Vegas who is having a very bad week; he lost $49,500 on Golden State’s money line in Game 3, then lost $75,000 on the Boston Bruins Thursday.

This person is chasing losses……..Friday he bet $182,000 on the Warriors $-190 to win $95,789 in Game 4.

Another tough night for that gambler. Minus $306,000 in three nights; hope he got free drink tickets, at least.

7) Baseball stuff:
— Mariners put OF Mitch Haniger (ruptured testicle) on the IL. Ouch
— In 2012 there were 2,020 pitchouts in major leagues; last year, there were 350.
— Relief pitchers have thrown 40.5% of innings this year, with a 4.42 ERA; five years ago, relief pitchers threw 33.5% of IP. with a 3.57 ERA.

Next analytics wave in baseball will find starting pitchers being stretched out longer in starts.

6) Boston Celtics are in favor of having free agency happen before the draft, which would be interesting. Right now, there are only roughly 10-14 days between the end of the Finals and the draft, so the draft would get pushed back, which would push back the summer league.

5) Kentucky and UCLA have assistant coaches in Brazil at the FIBA u16 Americas tourney. The quarter-finals of the event started Friday.

4) Alex, I’d like bad baseball for $400 please:
— Top of 6th inning, Cardinals down 3-0 at Wrigley, man on first with one out, and Dexter Fowler gets picked off. Why? How? He wasn’t going to steal. Terrible.

3) Jurors in the Kellen Winslow Jr rape trial sent this message to the judge:

“The jurors could benefit from an explanation as to what being under oath means.

Additionally, how we should follow the law and not what we think the law should mean.”

Sounds like those 12 people aren’t getting along too well.

2) RB Frank Gore Jr signed with Florida Atlantic and Lane Kiffin.

RB Frank Gore Sr is still playing in the NFL, with Buffalo.

1) Phillies 4, Reds 2— Jay Bruce is the first player ever to homer in each of his first three starts with the Phillies.

Sparks spoil Lynx ceremony for Whalen
June 8, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Riquna Williams scored 25 points, Chelsea Gray added 21 and the Los Angeles Sparks edged the Lynx 89-85 on Saturday, spoiling a special day for their rivals who retired the jersey of Minnesota native and star Lindsay Whalen.

Gray capped her string of eight-straight points in the fourth quarter with a shot-clock beating 5-footer off an inbounds play with 8.5 seconds remaining to give the Sparks an 87-83 lead. Gray put up a tough 10-foot shot with clock winding down and missed the rim but the ball went off a Minnesota player. On the inbounds, Gray set a screen on the wing then rolled toward inbounder Tierra Ruffin-Pratt. Gray took the pass, dribbled once to get inside the lane then stepped back and knocked down the short shot.

Sylvia Fowles, who had 20 points to surpass 5,000 for her career, scored with 2.1 seconds left and the Lynx fouled Gray in the backcourt with 1.2 to play. After Gray made a free throw, officials were told it was only a fourth team foul for Minnesota, so Los Angeles inbounded the ball again.

Williams, who is being investigated for domestic assault and burglary, had her first double-figure game of the season and clinched the win with two free throws with .1 second to go.

It was a typical intense game between the teams that split when facing off for WNBA titles in 2016 and 2017.

Los Angeles led most of the way but every time the Lynx surged back. It was tied at 17 after one quarter and the Sparks led 44-39 at the half. Minnesota cut it to one entering the fourth quarter. Ruffin-Pratt opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and Marina Mabrey had a layup for a 72-66 lead. Gray pushed the lead to 81-71 just past the midway point of the fourth quarter but rookie Napheesa Collier scored five quick points and Danielle Robinson followed with a layup to cut the deficit to three.

Lexie Brown's 3-pointer at 1:11 made it 83-82 but Gray answered with a step-back jumper. Collier made a free throw with 33.4 to go to cut LA's lead to 85-83.

Ruffin-Pratt had 17 points and Chiney Ogwumike had 14 and split 18 rebounds with her sister Nneka.

Brown led Minnesota with 21 points and Collier had 18. Fowles also had 13 rebounds and is the fifth WNBA player with 5,000 points and 3,000 rebounds.

THEY CALL HER WEEZY

Whalen, who took the University of Minnesota to the NCAA Final Four, was named the Gophers' coach for the 2018-19 seasons and retired after the 2018 WNBA season. In her 15-year career, the first six with the Connecticut Sun, Whalen set a record for career games and is third in career assists while making the All-Star team six times. The Hutchinson, Minnesota, native helped the Lynx win four WNBA championships.

The only player with 5,000 points, 2,000 assists and 1,500 rebounds, Whalen's No. 13 jersey is the first retired by the Lynx.

''Getting to know people on and off the court is just special,'' Whalen said in a television interview during the game. ''It's relationships and the people along the way.''

She said winning never got old.

''Up until I decided to retire we just kept saying, `Let's do it again ... it's fun,''' she said. ''We were having a lot of fun on the court and everybody had something to prove at different times.''

Whalen said the key ingredient was a toughness instill by coach Cheryl Reeves.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

College football spreads for games on Nov 2:

— Miami @ Florida State (-1.5)

— Houston @ Central Florida (-14)

— Georgia (-3.5) vs Florida (@ Jacksonville)

— Virginia Tech @ Notre Dame (-16)

— Oregon (-1) @ USC

— Utah @ Washington (-8)

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a summer Saturday

13) I’m probably a little late with this, but if you like music, A Star Is Born is an outstanding movie and I highly recommend it. Saw it this weekend; I’ve never seen the Kris Kristofferson version from 1976 or the much older version, but Bradley Cooper/Lady Gaga had great chemistry. Not that pleasant a movie, but really well done and great acting.

12) Indiana-Kentucky high school All-Stars have a game every year; Indiana won this year’s game 120-74- a kid named Jake LaRavia of Lawrence Central apparently dominated the game.

Writer Gregg Doyle did nothing but rave about the 6-8 LaRavia, who will attend Indiana State in the fall. He made 42% of his 3’s last year in high school, but Doyle says his game is well-rounded and that the Sycamores should be very excited to have him on their side next year.

11) Texas Rangers retired Adrian Beltre’s number 29 Saturday night; little unusual for a team to retire a guy’s number so soon after he retires. Quite an honor.

10) Angels 12, Mariners 3—Seattle’s Yusei Kikuchi had a 3.43 ERA through his first 11 starts; in his last 9.2 IP, he’s allowed 29 hits and 17 runs. No bueno.

9) Raptors’ G Fred VanVleet needed seven stitches and lost part of a tooth in Friday night’s win in Oakland; he collided with Golden State’s Shaun Livingston.

8) Baseball can be weird; Minnesota’s Max Kepler was in an 0-21 slump, but then Thursday, he went 4-4 wth three homers against Trevor Bauer. Go figure.

7) Baseball stuff:
— Red Sox put 1B Mitch Moreland (quad) on IL.
— Pirates activated OF Corey Dickerson from the 60-day IL.
— Cardinals placed 3B Jedd Gyorko on the 10-day (back)
— Padres placed RHP Adam Warren on the 10-day IL (forearm)
— Angels put Trevor Cahill (elbow) on the IL.

6) Not only is the Giants’ Brandon Crawford the oldest starting shortstop in the majors, he is the one of only two starting SS’s (Elvis Andrus) who is 30+ years of age.

5) NBA will have two regular season games in Mexico next season; Mavericks-Pistons will play on December 12, with Suns-Spurs meeting two days later.

4) Brothers CJ and Kevin Cron both hit their first major league homer in Toronto; their father Chris Cron his two major league hits, both in Toronto.

3) Vanderbilt 3, Duke 0— Kid named Kumar Rocker threw a no-hitter, struck out 19 for Vandy; it is funny how Vanderbilt is lousy at football, mediocre at basketball but great at baseball. Young Mr Rocker is a freshman, has quite a future ahead of him.

2) Oregon State C Adley Rutschman is said to be the best draft prospect since Bryce Harper in 2010 and he is the best catching prospect since Buster Posey in 2008. He’s a switch-hitter with power, and he’s a very advanced receiver, but here’s the thing:

When you’re a really good hitter and a team invests a ton of money in you, they might want you to change positions, to maximize your career— catchers tend to fade out earlier, but to wear and tear. Rutschman may be learning other positions as he climbs the Orioles’ minor league ladder.

1) Quote of the Day, part 2:
“He’s not the biggest guy, but he definitely walks with a presence, walks with a purpose. He’s taken on a good role in knowing all the plays and being able to call some plays for us. He’s quicker than snot. He’s been flying around and making a lot of good plays.”

Hawkins, Powers help Mystics beat winless Wings 86-62
June 9, 2019
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Tianna Hawkins and Aerial Powers combined for 39 points off the bench and the Washington Mystics cruised to an 86-62 win over the winless Dallas Wings on Sunday.

Dallas (0-4) had an 11-0 run in the first quarter and led 20-15. Washington, which has won four straight, went on a 12-2 run in the second quarter, taking a 25-24 lead on a Hawkins 3. A 7-2 surge in the last 70 seconds put the Mystics on top 40-34 at the break. The margin was 10 after three quarters and Washington dominated the fourth.

Glory Johnson led Dallas with 15 points but only had 11 in the second half. Imani McGee-Stafford added 11 points.
