Howard lifts Storm to win over Mercury
May 25, 2019
By The Associated Press

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) Natasha Howard had 21 points and 16 rebounds, Jewell Loyd added 17 points and the Seattle Storm opened defensive of their WNBA title with a 77-68 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday.

Beginning a season where they will play without reigning league MVP Breanna Stewart for the entire season and 11-time All-Star Sue Bird for a significant portion, the Storm rallied from an 11-point first half deficit to make sure celebrating last year's title was capped with a victory.

With Bird sitting on the bench and Stewart a few feet away in a protective boot, Seattle's two biggest stars were forced to be spectators and watched their teammates outscore Phoenix 40-25 in the middle two quarters and hold off the best efforts of DeWanna Bonner to rally the Mercury. Bonner scored 15 straight points for Phoenix late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to pull the Mercury within 58-57. That's as close as they would get as Seattle outscored Phoenix 19-11 over the final seven minutes.

Bonner finished with 31 points, as the Mercury started a season where they will be without Diana Tarausi for a significant chunk after undergoing back surgery in late April.

SUN 84, MYSTICS 69

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) - Alyssa Thomas scored 23 points, Jonquel Jones had 10 points and 14 rebounds and the Sun beat the short-handed Mystics.

Washington was missing Elena Delle Donne, who sat out the opener with left knee soreness.

Even without their star, the Mystics kept it close until Connecticut went on a 13-2 run in the middle of the third quarter to take control. Jasmine Thomas hit a jumper to make it 48-45 at the 7:34 mark. That started the game-changing run.

The Suns led 67-53 after three quarters and by double figures throughout the fourth quarter.

Emma Meesseman, who has returned to the Mystics after playing in Belgium last season, scored 14 points.

LYNX 89, SKY 71

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Napheesa Collier scored 27 points, the second most in WNBA history by a rookie in her debut, and the new-look Lynx pulled away from the Sky in the second half.

Collier, who was the sixth pick in the draft this year, was short of Candace Parker's record 34-point effort in her first game with the Los Angeles Sparks in 2008. The Lynx hardly missed perennial MVP Maya Moore, who is sitting out this season, as Collier hit 8 of her 10 shots, including three 3-pointers. Minnesota is also adjusting to the retirement of long-time guard Lindsay Whalen, who will have her number retired later this season.

Collier overshadowed her former UConn teammates Katie Lou Samuelson, the fourth overall pick in the draft. Samuelson made her only shot and both her free throws to score four points off the bench for Chicago.

Gabby Williams and Kahleah Cooper had 11 points apiece for the Sky, who trailed 46-40 at the half but were outscored 24-10 in the third quarter.

*****************************

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…….

13) Was watching a ballgame the other day; Pittsburgh shifted against a lefty hitter, putting the 3B where the SS usually is, which confuses me.

Why not just leave the SS where he is supposed to be, and put the 3B behind 2B? Having the rangier fielder as the only guy on the left side seems smarter.

As it was, Colorado dunked a pop-up for a hit into short left-field, because 3B Colin Moran does not have great range, and Melky Cabrera was playing LF and he has virtually no range.

Different teams approach shifts differently, which makes it interesting.

12) Minnesota Twins hit 101 homers in their first 50 games, joining the ’99 Mariners as the only teams to homer 100+ times in their first 50 games of a season.

11) Major league baseball teams hit 59 homers in 14 games Friday, 2nd-most in a single day in baseball history, trailing only the 62 homers hit on July 2, 2002- there were 16 games played then, with a doubleheader in Boston that day.

10) Wrigley Field organist Gary Pressy worked his 2,633rd consecutive game Saturday; that means he hasn’t missed a home game since sometime in 1987- very impressive.

9) Went to an AAU tournament Saturday, first time I’ve done that in a couple years; the Gym Rat Challenge is a Memorial Day weekend tradition here in Albany– it is very well organized, spread out all over the Albany/Troy/Saratoga area.

They have three courts in the Times Union Center in downtown Albany, a 15,000-seat arena that is way too big for an event like this, but kids must enjoy playing there. Teams from all over the northeast come to the Gym Rat— good chance for kids to play against solid competition.

8) Astros 4, Red Sox 3— Boston starter David Price left this game after three batters with flu-like symptoms. Correa walked it off with a single in bottom of 9th.

7) College basketball transfer portal:
— Middle Tennessee State poaches Jalen Jordan from St Francis NY.

6) Diamondbacks 10, Giants 1— Arizona outscored San Francisco the last two days by combined score of 28-6. Going to be a rough summer for the Giants.

5) Mets 5 Tigers 4 (13)— Both teams ran out of position players, used a starting pitcher as a pinch-runner, graphic evidence that baseball is more interesting without the DH.

4) Phillies sent OF Nick Williams down to AAA earlier this week; he took the maximum amount of time to report, then played one game (went 2-5) and was given the weekend off by the Phillies to attend his girlfriend’s college graduation. I wish I was making this up.

Two years ago, Williams hit .288 with 12 homers in 83 games for the Phillies, but when the new regime took over last year, Williams’ star dimmed noticeably, and with Harper/McCutchen now in the Phils’ outfield, Williams is the odd man out.

I’m assuming he wants to be traded, but taking a weekend off to attend your girlfriend’s college graduation raises red flags about how much you care about playing, which makes it more difficult for you to be traded.

3) Baseball stuff:
— Angels put P Matt Harvey (back) on the IL.
— White Sox put C Welington Castillo on the 7-day concussion list.
— Pirates put P Chris Stratton on the IL.
— Astros put OF George Springer (hamstring) on IL.

2) Raptors 100, Bucks 94— Toronto advances to NBA Finals for first time, by sweeping last four games of series after losing Games 1-2 in Milwaukee.

1) Thoughts/prayers to Wisconsin assistant basketball coach Howard Moore, whose family was involved in a deadly car accident Saturday morning; coach Moore lost his wife and his daughter- he and his son are fighting for their lives. We wish them well.

Defending champ Storm dump Mercury

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) After the rings were handed out, the banner unveiled, the Seattle Storm proved there can be optimism about what they can accomplish even without Breanna Stewart and Sue Bird on the floor.

''Don't doubt us. Just don't doubt us,'' Seattle's Natasha Howard said. ''Even though we're down two players with injury, don't doubt us. Anything can happen this season.''

Howard had 21 points and 16 rebounds, Jewell Loyd added 17 points and the Seattle Storm opened defensive of their WNBA title with a 77-68 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday.

Beginning a season where they will play without Stewart, the reigning league MVP, for the entire season and Bird, an 11-time All-Star for a significant portion, the Storm rallied from an 11-point first half deficit to make sure celebrating last year's title was capped with a victory.

Bonner finished with 31 points, as the Mercury started a season where they will be without Diana Taurasi for a significant chunk after undergoing back surgery in late April. Brittney Griner added 18 points

''They know who is going to score for us and we need other people to be aggressive on offense and be more involved,'' Phoenix coach Sandy Brondello said.

Jordin Canada, starting for Bird, had eight of her 16 points in the fourth quarter for Seattle. Canada struggled with six turnovers in the first half. She had just one in the second half.

''The first half I was overthinking it too much, wasn't playing with a lot of poise and patience,'' Canada said. ''The second half my coaches talk to me, my teammates talked to me about staying in the moment.''

Playing in one of two temporary home arenas, Seattle received its championship rings, unveiled a championship banner with the three years it has won the league title then got a sense of what it will take without Bird and Stewart on the floor.

Bird will soon undergo left knee surgery. She may be able to return at the end of the season depending on her recovery. Stewart is out the entire season after tearing her right Achilles tendon playing overseas. Stewart was placed on the suspended list by the Storm earlier this week to clear a roster spot, but the WNBA has made Stewart an ambassador and will pay her in excess of the roughly $65,000 base salary she would have made with the Storm.

RING CEREMONY

Seattle was presented with its championship rings before tipoff. Included in the celebration was coach Dan Hughes, who recently underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his digestive tract. Hughes is out for an undetermined period while he undergoes treatment, accepted the first championship ring of his career as a head coach.

TEMPORARY HOME

Seattle is playing in temporary venues for at least the next two seasons while the arena at Seattle Center - formerly KeyArena - undergoes a complete renovation that will be the home for the Storm and Seattle's future NHL franchise when it reopens in 2021. The Storm are playing five games in Everett, about 30 miles north of Seattle. The remaining home games will be played at Alaska Airlines Arena on the University of Washington campus.

UP NEXT

Mercury: Phoenix hosts Las Vegas in its home opener next Friday.

Storm: Seattle travels to Minnesota on Wednesday.

Las Vegas Aces put on show in opener even without Liz Cambage

LAS VEGAS -- Coach Bill Laimbeer refers to this desert oasis as a "big small town." As in, Las Vegas is a large enough metro area to support the WNBA's Aces well, but not so huge that they're lost in the landscape. This is a place, Laimbeer said, where someone like Liz Cambage can stand out -- and not just because she's 6-foot-8. But because she has star quality that extends beyond how good her game is.

Yet as excited as Las Vegas Aces fans are about getting the Australian center -- who came via trade with Dallas earlier this month -- their team showed them plenty in Sunday's season opener even without her. The Aces won 83-70 over the Los Angeles Sparks, getting 21 points and 11 rebounds from A'ja Wilson, last season's rookie of the year. Cambage, who is dealing with Achilles' tendinitis, did not play, sporting a black suit and a look of concentration during the game as she studied her new teammates and provided encouragement.

Wilson, one of three overall No. 1 draft picks on the roster along with Kelsey Plum (2017) and Jackie Young (2019), started Sunday where she left off as a rookie, as one of the most talented players on the floor. But guard Kayla McBride (20 points, seven rebounds) and forward Dearica Hamby (12 points, 14 rebounds) also shined for the Aces. Hamby, in her fifth season, came off the bench to give Las Vegas a lift, which is her specialty.

Las Vegas led throughout the game, and firmly took control by holding the Sparks to eight points in the second quarter. Los Angeles was without veteran forward Candace Parker, who has a hamstring injury. The Sparks have been known for their defense in recent years, but there were glitches in a different system under new coach Derek Fisher.

"It's going to take some time, but we have to be patient," Sparks guard Alana Beard said.

Sunday was the first time the Ogwumike sisters, Nneka and Chiney, have played together in the WNBA, with Chiney coming to Los Angeles in a trade from Connecticut. Nneka had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Chiney had a Sparks debut she'd probably like to forget, going 1-of-10 from the field and finishing with two points.

Maria Vadeeva, a Russian post player in her second season in the league, led Los Angeles with 24 points. It's uncertain how long they'll be without Parker, but they missed her despite the amount of talent they do have.

Young had a solid debut for the Aces, starting and going 4-for-4 from the field for eight points. Plum had 11 points and a team-high six assists. It was the kind of game that has to whet the appetite of Aces fans; if they played this well without Cambage, just wait until she's on the floor.

Laimbeer is frank -- and he's correct -- in saying that Tulsa was the worst place Cambage could have ended up when she was drafted into the WNBA at No. 2 in 2011. The franchise had just moved from Detroit, had someone in Nolan Richardson who'd never coached the women's game before, and too much was expected from the 19-year-old Cambage with a franchise that didn't have enough talent or strong direction.

Even though it has been a long road for her to get here, Laimbeer says he thinks it's the right fit. The anticipation will build for when she gets to take the court for the Aces. But Sunday's victory was a good indication that Vegas is good -- and will soon get even better.

11) Braves 4, Cardinals 3 (10)— St Louis led 3-0 in 9th inning, blew the lead and lost for the 16th time in their last 22 games. Atlanta scored the winning run on a bases loaded walk.

Coming into the game, major league teams were 423-2 this season when leading by 3+ runs after eight innings. Now they’re 423-3.

10) Bullpens have become so hit/miss lately; lot of bettors are leaning towards betting on first five inning results, rather than nine-inning results. Keeps the starting pitcher as the essential piece of the equation.

9) Mets 4, Tigers 3— Mets split their last dozen games; this was their only win by a starting pitcher in that span. Hechevarria homered to the opposite field for the winning homer.

8) Baltimore Ravens will be using a completely new offense in 2019, but no one told the team’s QB, Lamar Jackson. Odd way to do business.

7) College basketball transfer portal:
— Joel Ntambwe bolts from UNLV to Texas Tech.

Texas Tech is coached by Chris Beard, who was UNLV’s coach for three weeks in March 2016, before jumping to the Red Raiders. This should make him even more popular in Las Vegas.

6) NBA Finals start Thursday in Toronto:
— Home team has gone 19-3 SU in Game 1 of the last 22 NBA Finals.
— Last 22 years, under is 14-7-1 in Game 1 of the Finals.
— Raptors are 8-2 SU, 7-3 ATS at home in this year’s playoffs.
— Warriors are 6-2 SU, 4-4 ATS on the road in the playoffs.

Golden State is -$285 to win the series.

5) Since 2000, most games a major league team has won without making the playoffs is 93:
— 2002 Mariners
— 2002 Red Sox
— 2003 Mariners

— 2005 Indians

4) One thing you hear baseball people say a lot: You have to have good up-the-middle defense. Apparently, baseball people in Detroit don’t say that a lot.

Detroit Tigers are playing JaCoby Jones in CF; he’s not good. He went 6-13 this weekend to get his batting average over .200. He looks very shaky in the outfield; not really sure what Detroit sees in him.

Niko Goodrum started all three games of the Tigers’ series at Citi Field this weekend, but he started at three different positions. Detroit has sketchy defense in part because they jerk around their players around so much, and in part because their players just aren’t very good.

3) Baseball stuff:
— Pirates put D Francisco Cervelli on the 7-day concussion IL.
— Padres scratched Chris Paddack from his start Sunday (stiff neck)
— Astros’ 2B Aledmys Diaz (hamstring) left Sunday’s game early.
— Tampa Bay moved P Tyler Glasnow to the 60-day IL.
— Orioles put 1B Chris Davis (hip) on the IL.

2) Get well soon to Cleveland Cavaliers’ owner Dan Gilbert, who was hospitalized Sunday after experiencing stroke-like symptoms.

1) RIP Bart Starr, 85, who passed away this weekend; Starr led the Packers to five NFL titles, including wins in the first two Super Bowls.

Starr played college ball at Alabama; he was drafted by Green Bay in the 17th round of the 1956 draft. He also coached the Packers from 1975-83.

14-1- Rory McIlroy

16-1- Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth

Tweet of the Day
“It would be nice to have another starter that we can run out there. Not to say that [Steven] Brault and Rookie [Davis] — I heard [Mitch] Keller’s coming up — can’t do it. But if you look at the staffs around the league and the division we’re in, it’s tough. We have to be running out the best thing we have every night. That’s what we’re trying to do right now.”
Pirates pitcher Joe Musgrove

Tuesday’s quiz
Jacob deGrom is a really good pitcher; what is the Mets’ record in his last 40 starts?

Monday’s quiz
Steve Kerr played his college basketball at Arizona.

Sunday’s quiz
Michael Jordan was the 3rd pick in the 1984 NBA Draft; Hakeem Olajuwon was the first pick. Sam Bowie was the second pick.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

13) General observation from watching hours and hours of baseball; older umpires call more strikes than younger umps. No data to support this, but just get the feeling from watching so many games than older guys give more corners.

12) It still baffles me why major league baseball blacks out games; do they want the game to get more exposure, so younger people will like it the way we do?

Dodger games are blacked out in Las Vegas, which is three hours from Los Angeles. To paraphrase my high school chemistry teacher, “……this is nonsensical.”

You could have hundreds of people in casinos all over Las Vegas watching baseball, rooting for baseball players, talking/caring about baseball, but they black out the games. Why?!?!?!?!?

11) Baseball is hard; long season, 162 games in 182 days.
— Sunday, Trevor Story was 0-5 with five strikeouts.
— Monday, Javier Baez was 0-5 with five strikeouts.

Both these guys are really good players. Thats why you hear people say that you have to keep an even keel over the course of a long season. There will be bad days.

10) Rays 8, Blue Jays 3— Tampa Bay starter Yonny Chirinos didn’t allow a hit for five innings, but was taken out after throwing 69 pitches, with a 4-0 lead. Interesting decision.

9) Brewers 5, Twins 4— Twins scored first in 36 of their 53 games; they’re 30-6 in the games where they scored first. Minnesota still leads the AL Central by 10.5 games.

8) WHIP is a pitcher’s stat; walks and hits allowed divided by innings pitched- it measures how many baserunners a pitcher allows. Seems strange to me that if a pitcher hits a batter with a pitch, it doesn’t count against his WHIP. Shouldn’t it count the same as a walk?

7) Baseball stuff:
— Colorado put OF Charlie Blackmon (calf) on IL.
— Astros put 2B Aledmys Diaz (hamstring) on IL.
— Arizona put P Luke Weaver (forearm) on IL.

6) David Price will start Tuesday’s game vs Cleveland; he left his last start in Houston after 15 pitches because of flu-like symptoms.

5) World Series of Poker starts this week in Las Vegas; this is the 50th WSOP. Would be nice if they made online poker legal again, so ESPN would show more of the WSOP replays and less of their hideous talkshows that pollute the airways on weekdays.

I enjoyed watching poker re-runs; seeing the hole card cam and watching how people reacted to bad beats. Was unscripted and fun to watch, unless the horrendous talk TV they have on now.

4) College basketball transfer portal:
— TCU poaches George Mason grad transfer Jaire Grayer
— Arkansas poaches SMU grad transfer Jimmy Whitt.

3) A’s 8, Angels 5— Oakland won its 10th game in a row, their longest win streak in 13 years.

2) Monday’s game between the White Sox and Royals was suspended with two outs in the bottom of the 5th inning, tied 1-1. The game will be resumed before tomorrow’s regularly-scheduled game.

1) RIP to Bill Buckner, who passed away at age 69; he hit .289 over a 22-year career that saw him get 2,715 hits. Twice led the league in doubles; won NL batting title in 1980.

Klay Thompson adds meditation to his mental preparation
May 28, 2019
By The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Klay Thompson craved a little calm.

The Golden State guard needed something more to balance out his basketball routine, so he added meditation to help him get centered before games and better deal with the pressures of NBA life. Flip on some classical music or nature sounds and he's ready to relax his mind.

It takes consistent practice, just like that pretty jumper.

''I try to go 30 minutes,'' said Thompson, who is joined for some sessions by bulldog bestie, Rocco. ''It's hard. It's very hard. An hour would be nice, but you've got to work up to that.''

Thompson is in a good place right now, going to a fifth straight NBA Finals and chasing a three-peat with the Golden State Warriors.

Two-time reigning Finals MVP Kevin Durant sat out injured for the entire Western Conference finals, leaving Thompson and Splash Brother Stephen Curry to take on an even greater load on both ends.

Thompson heads into Game 1 at Toronto on Thursday night averaging 19.1 points these playoffs, having scored 22.6 points per game in the five contests without Durant.

Mental preparation off the court is a major reason Thompson no longer lets things fester or bring him down, such as a tough loss or bad outing. He has said that earlier in his career it was hard to let go after games.

Now, he instead shrugs off a poor shooting performance with the simple notion of, ''That's the way the basketball gods can be.'' Then, it's back to work.

Left off the All-NBA team? ''Oh, I didn't?'' he replied when told he hadn't made the cut.

Thompson did allow himself a little eye roll in disbelief, before adding: ''It is what it is. I can't control it. Do I think there's that many guards better than me in the league? No, but that's the reason why we're still playing. So, I don't even want to get into it, honestly.''

The more media shy, under-the-radar of Golden State's sensational backcourt - Curry is a two-time MVP - a slumping Thompson once held his hand up near his face and uttered ''I missed you'' when he finally got on a roll again at Portland on Dec. 29.

He credits meditation in part for how far he has come in handling everything as he wraps up his eighth NBA season.

Thompson added meditation and visualization into his routine the last couple of years. This is the typically stoic guard who plunged into the Pacific Ocean in Southern California before Game 4 of the first round against the Clippers following a performance that wasn't up to his ''standards.'' He went out and scored 32 after that with six 3-pointers, hitting his first seven shots.

''The mind's so powerful. Just try to train the mind to deal with adversity in situations that are unpleasant but make you better in the long run, that's what I try to do,'' Thompson said when asked how he got involved meditation. ''Just a lot of reading on the internet and learning from coach (Steve) Kerr. Learned from Tony Robbins, too. It was cool talking to him last year. He had a great outlook on things. Just from veteran players. David West taught me a lot about that side of the game, the mental part.''

Teammate Shaun Livingston can picture Thompson in a moment of complete serenity and peace - ''100 percent, nothing would surprise me.''

Dr. Michael Gervais, a high-performance psychologist who has worked closely with the Seattle Seahawks, NBA players, USA Volleyball and other Olympic athletes, applauds Thompson taking up meditation on his own.

''So often we hold up world-leading athletes on a pedestal for their physical abilities, missing the deeper and extraordinary commitment they make toward pursuing their potential,'' Gervais said. ''There are only three things we can train as humans: our craft, our bodies, and our mind. World-class athletes don't leave any of those up to chance - why should the rest of us?''

When he had a couple of days off after the Warriors wrapped up the Western Conference finals, Thompson noted, ''I wish it was sunny'' before adding, ''A little overcast, but it's all good.''

Sure is.

Thompson found out in April he will have his college jersey retired by Washington State, too.

''Klay is always someone who everybody sort of marvels at his life, the simplicity of his life. He just needs a basketball and his dog, and that's it. And we all laugh about it,'' Kerr said. ''But Klay is a lot deeper than people realize, so it doesn't surprise me that he's meditating and he's found ways to calm himself before games and keep himself going during the season.''

The 29-year-old Thompson takes time the night before a game to think ahead. It doesn't matter if he's in the driveway or hanging out in his backyard with beloved Rocco - ''just random,'' he said.

Sometimes he envisions each shot from a given spot on the floor that could present itself over the course of a game.

''Andre Iguodala told me that Tiger Woods visualizes every single shot he shoots on 18 holes on the golf course, so if he can do that, that's incredible,'' Thompson said. ''That's so many golf swings. I try to do the same approach to basketball. I just try to visualize, get in my spots, what my opponent is going to do. Yeah, so when you come to the game, you've kind of seen it before.''

He might go with some Mozart or Beethoven.

''Try to put on classical Pandora or some nature sounds. Can't listen to rap or hip-hop when I do it because then I just get distracted. Something pleasant in the background, it's nice,'' Thompson explained. ''It's a challenge. It's much harder than working out. Especially for me, I've got like my mind racing. So it's a good practice for me.''

Kerr considers Thompson one of the most down-to-earth NBA superstars.

''He's a dream to coach. He's zero maintenance,'' Kerr said. ''But he'll surprise you with his depth. You may not think there's a whole lot there, but there's plenty there, he just sort of doesn't let you in on it very often.''

Thompson knows it's not a perfect science to get his shot back on track after a poor outing. The meditation provides a focus.

''I still will have bad days once in a while, but that's just being human,'' Thompson said. ''It's something I've incorporated in my routine for at least the past season, especially when I was going through that shooting slump. That really helped me. It's just nice to manifest things. Kind of like speak into existence, just kind of think it into existence.''

May 28, 2019

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) Jonquel Jones scored 25 points and Jasmine Thomas added 16 to help the Connecticut Sun beat the Indiana Fever 88-77 on Tuesday night.

Jones scored 14 first-half points to help the Sun build a 40-37 lead at the break. Connecticut opened the third on a 19-9 spurt to take the first double-digit advantage and led 62-52 at the end of the quarter.

Courtney Williams added 13 points and Alyssa Thomas grabbed 10 rebounds for Connecticut (2-0), which has won nine straight home games dating to last season. Jones made four of the Sun's 10 3-pointers.

Erica Wheeler had 26 points and nine assists and Candice Dupree added 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Indiana (1-1), which hasn't won back-to-back games to start a season since 2012. In the Fever's season opener, rookie Teaira McCowan hit her first game-winning shot at any level against New York.
